We consider the local bifurcation and global dynamics of a predator-prey model with cooperative hunting and Allee effect. For the model with weak cooperation, we prove the existence of limit cycle, heteroclinic cycle at a threshold of conversion rate $p=p^{\#}$. When $p>p^{\#}$, both species go extinct, and when $p<p^{\#}$, there is a separatrix. The species with initial population above the separatrix finally become extinct; otherwise, they coexist or oscillate sustainably. In the case with strong cooperation, we exhibit the complex dynamics of system in three different cases, including limit cycle, loop of heteroclinic orbits among three equilibria, and homoclinic cycle. Moreover, we find diffusion may induce Turing instability and Turing-Hopf bifurcation, leaving the system with spatially inhomogeneous distribution of the species, coexistence of two different spatial-temporal oscillations. Finally, we investigate Hopf and double Hopf bifurcations of the diffusive system induced by two delays.
A generalized seasonally-varying predator-prey model with Allee effect in the prey growth is investigated. The analysis is performed only on the basis of some properties determining the shape of the prey growth rate and the trophic interaction functions. General conditions for coexistence are determined, both in the case of weak and strong Allee effect. Finally, a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with Allee effect is investigated. Numerical results illustrate the qualitative behaviors of the system, in particular the presence of periodic orbits.
The transition between strong and weak Allee effects in prey provides a simple regime shift in ecology. A deteriorating environment changes weak Allee effects into strong ones. In this paper, we study the interplay between the functional response of Holling type IV and both strong and weak Allee effects. The model investigated here presents complex dynamics and high codimension bifurcations. In particular, nilpotent cusp bifurcation, nilpotent saddle bifurcation and degenerate Hopf bifurcation of codimension 3 are completely analyzed, and the existence of homoclinic and heteroclinic loops are …
In this manuscript, we study a Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with a hyperbolic functional response and weak Allee effect. The results reveal that the model supports coexistence and oscillation of both predator and prey populations. We also identify regions in the parameter space in which different kinds of bifurcations, such as saddle-node bifurcations, Hopf bifurcations and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations.
A predator-prey model with functional response Holling type II, Allee effect in the prey and a generalist predator is considered. It is shown that the model with strong Allee effect has at most two positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other exhibits multi-stability phenomenon since the equilibrium point can be stable or unstable. While the model with weak Allee effect has at most three positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other two can be stable or unstable node. In addition, when the parameters…
In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of a Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with Allee effect and fear effect are studied. First, we use Blow-Up method to explore the stability of the original point. Analyze the local stability of the non-negative equilibriums of the system. Taking the growth rate of predators as the Hopf bifurcation parameters. And give the condition of the model Hopf bifurcation. Using the method of calculating the first Lyapunov coefficient to discuss the direction of the Hopf bifurcation near the weak center.
In the present study, we have modified the traditional May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey model used to represent the interaction between least weasel and field-vole population by adding an Allee effect (strong and weak) on the field-vole population and alternative food source for the weasel population. It is shown that the dynamic is different from the original May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey interaction since new equilibrium points have appeared in the first quadrant. Moreover, the modified model allows the extinction of both species when the Allee effect (strong and weak) on the prey is incl…
We study a predator-prey model with Holling type I functional response, an alternative food source for the predator, and multiple Allee effects on the prey. We show that the model has at most two equilibrium points in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point while the other can be a repeller or an attractor. Moreover, there is always a stable equilibrium point that corresponds to the persistence of the predator population and the extinction of the prey population. Additionally, we show that when the parameters are varied the model displays a wide range of different bifurcations, such a…
The population dynamics of predator-prey systems in the presence of patch-specific predators are explored in a setting where the prey population has access to both habitats. The emphasis is in situations where patch-prey abundance drives prey-dispersal between patches, with the fragile prey populations, that is, populations subject to the Allee effect. The resulting four-dimensional model's mathematical analysis is carried out via sub-models that focus in lower dimensional settings. The outcomes depend on, and in fact they are quite sensitive to, the structure of the system, the range of param…
A delayed, discrete-time, prey-predator model with Allee effects imposed on prey and predator populations is defined, and dynamics of the system is characterized computationally. The parametric conditions for local asymptotic stability of equilibria are investigated with several illustrating examples. In addition, several periodic solutions were achieved. Furthermore, high degree of fractality of the prey-predator population trajectories is observed when the system is sufficiently delayed. This system has turned out to be a cooperative system, which is depicted using fractal dimension.
We analyse a modified May-Holling-Tanner predator-prey model considering an Allee effect in the prey and alternative food sources for predator. Additionally, the predation functional response or predation consumption rate is linear. The extended model exhibits rich dynamics and we prove the existence of separatrices in the phase plane separating basins of attraction related to oscillation, co-existence and extinction of the predator-prey population. We also show the existence of a homoclinic curve that degenerates to form a limit cycle and discuss numerous potential bifurcations such as saddle…
This paper investigates a dynamical predator-prey interaction model that incorporates: (a) hunting cooperation among predators; (b) Allee effect in prey. We show all possible boundary and interior solutions. In order to analyze the stability of the solution, we make use of the Jacobian matrix and the resultant characteristic polynomial. Particularly, the sign of the eigenvalue is used to determine the stability of a solution. We then provide proof for stability of the interior solution. Finally, we verify our results numerically in MATLAB by plotting: (1) predator-prey intersection graphs; (2)…
We analyse a modified Holling-Tanner predator-prey model where the predation functional response is of Holling type II and we incorporate a strong Allee effect associated with the prey species production. The analysis complements results of previous articles by Saez and Gonzalez-Olivares (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 59 1867-1878, 1999) and Arancibia-Ibarra and Gonzalez-Olivares (Proc. CMMSE 2015 130-141, 2015)discussing Holling-Tanner models which incorporate a weak Allee effect. The extended model exhibits rich dynamics and we prove the existence of separatrices in the phase plane separating basins o…
We propose and investigate a discrete-time predator-prey system with cooperative hunting in the predator population. The model is constructed from the classical Nicholson-Bailey host-parasitoid system with density dependent growth rate. A sufficient condition based on the model parameters for which both populations can coexist is derived, namely that the predator's maximal reproductive number exceeds one. We study existence of interior steady states and their stability in certain parameter regimes. It is shown that the system behaves asymptotically similar to the model with no cooperative hunt…
We study a discrete host-parasitoid system where the host population follows the classical Ricker functional form and is also subject to Allee effects. We determine basins of attraction of the local attractors of the single population model when the host intrinsic growth rate is not large. In this situation, existence and local stability of the interior steady states for the host-parasitoid interaction are completely analyzed. If the host's intrinsic growth rate is large, then the interaction may support multiple interior steady states. Linear stability of these steady states is provided.
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a predator-prey system of Gause type with cooperative hunting among predators and Holling III functional response. The known work numerically shows that the system exhibits saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations except homoclinic bifurcation for some special parameter values. Our results show that there are a weak focus of multiplicity three and a degenerate equilibrium with double zero eigenvalues (i.e., a cusp of codimension two) for general parameter conditions and the system can exhibit various bifurcations as perturbing the bifurcation parameters appr…
We consider the properties of a slow-fast prey-predator system in time and space. We first argue that the simplicity of prey-predator system is apparent rather than real and there are still many of its hidden properties that have been poorly studied or overlooked altogether. We further focus on the case where, in the slow-fast system, the prey growth is affected by a weak Allee effect. We first consider this system in the non-spatial case and make its comprehensive study using a variety of mathematical techniques. In particular, we show that the interplay between the Allee effect and the exist…
A cubic discrete coupled logistic equation is proposed to model the predator-prey problem. The coupling depends on the population size of both species and on a positive constant $λ$, which could depend on the prey reproduction rate and on the predator hunting strategy. Different dynamical regimes are obtained when $λ$ is modified. For small $λ$, the species become extinct. For a bigger $λ$, the preys survive but the predators extinguish. Only when the prey population reaches a critical value then predators can coexist with preys. For increasing $λ$, a bistable regime appears where the populati…
We proposed a three-species food chain model with hunting co-operation among the middle predator. In this model, third species prey on the middle species and the middle prey on the first species. The hunting cooperation among the middle predator affects interestingly on the numbers of both the predators and the prey. We examined the linear stability of the model theoretically and numerically. We conducted the two-parameter numerical analysis to check the long-term behavior and the change in the number of species with respect to hunting co-operation. Our findings supported the postulates from t…
In this paper, we suggest two ways of modifications, which seem natural: a) we will introduce sponsors/hunters of predators or/and preys with "license" for constant rate of sponsoring/hunting (regular external fluxes); b) we will introduce noise of kinetic coefficients.
In this paper, we discuss a hierarchical model, based on a Ricker competition model. The species considered are competing for resources and may be subject to an Allee effect due to mate limitation, anti-predator vigilance or aggression, cooperative predation or resource defense, or social thermoregulation. The species may be classified into a more dominant species and less dominant or ``wimpy" species or just as a predator and prey. The model under consideration also has components taking into account immigration in both species and a more structured Holling type II functional response. Local …
We identify the phase of a cycle as a new critical factor for tipping points (critical transitions) in cyclic systems subject to time-varying external conditions. As an example, we consider how contemporary climate variability induces tipping from a predator-prey cycle to extinction in two paradigmatic predator-prey models with an Allee effect. Our analysis of these examples uncovers a counter-intuitive behaviour, which we call phase tipping or P-tipping, where tipping to extinction occurs only from certain phases of the cycle. To explain this behaviour, we combine global dynamics with set the…
This paper presents a system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) as mathematical model to describe the spatial-temporal dynamics of predator-prey system in an artificial aquatic environment with schooling behavior imposed upon the associated prey. The proposed model follows the particle-like approach where interactions among the associated units are manifested through combination of attractive and repulsive forces analogous to the ones occurred in molecular physics. Two hunting tactics of the predator are proposed and integrated into the general model, namely the center-attacking and t…
In this investigation we study the effects of climate change on predator-prey population dynamics. The interaction of predator and prey is described by the Variable Territory (VT) model with Allee effects in an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) framework. Climate influence is modeled in this ODE framework as an exogenous driver which affects the prey growth rate. Mathematically, this exogenous driver is a function of time, the climate function, that describes how favorable is the climate, on a scale from $-1$ to $+1$. Climate change has a number of effects; in this work, we focus on changes…
Combined with all density-dependent factors, the per capita growth rate of a species may be non-monotonic. One important consequence is that species may suffer from weak Allee effects or strong Allee effects. In this paper, we study the permanence of a discrete-time two-species-interaction model with non-monotonic per capita growth rates for the first time. By using the average Lyapunov functions and extending the ecological concept of the relative nonlinearity, we find a simple sufficient condition for guaranteeing the permanence of systems that can model complicated two-species interactions.…
This paper presents a study of the two-predators-two-preys discrete-time Lotka-Volterra model with self- inhibition terms for preys with direct applications to ecological problems. Parameters in the model are modified so that each of them has its own biological meaning, enabling more intuitive interpretation of biological conditions to the model . Moreover, the modified version is applicable to simulate a part of a large ecosystem, not only a closed predator-prey system with four species. An easy graphical method of analysis of the conditions on parameters ensuring long persistence under coexi…
