Motivated by the classical Eulerian number, descent and excedance numbers in the hyperoctahedral groups, an triangular array from staircase tableaux and so on, we study a triangular array $[\mathcal {T}_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} \mathcal {T}_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{cd}λ(n-k+1)\mathcal {T}_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $\mathcal {T}_{0,0}=1$ and $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We derive a functional transformation for its row-generating function $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ from the row-generating function $A_n(x)$ of another array $[A_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ satisfying a two-term recurrence relation. Based on this transformation, we can get properties of $\mathcal {T}_{n,k}$ and $\mathcal{T}_n(x)$ including nonnegativity, log-concavity, real rootedness, explicit formula and so on. Then we extend the famous Frobenius formula, the $γ$ positivity decomposition and the David-Barton formula for the classical Eulerian polynomial to those of a generalized Eulerian polynomial. We also get an identity for the generalized Eulerian polynomial with the general derivative polynomial.
Finally, we apply our results to an array from the Lambert function, a triangular array from staircase tableaux and the alternating-runs triangle of type $B$ in a unified approach.
We show how some special production matrices may be used to define families of generalized Eulerian triangles. We furthermore show that these generalized Eulerian triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomials which are the moments of families of orthogonal polynomials. Using the previously defined $\mathcal{T}$ transform, we associate these generalized Eulerian triangles to triangles defined by Catalan generating functions. Again, these new triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomial moment sequences. The main tools used are the Sumudu transform, Jacobi continued fractions and Rio…
The classical Eulerian polynomials can be expanded in the basis $t^{k-1}(1+t)^{n+1-2k}$ ($1\leq k\leq\lfloor (n+1)/2\rfloor$) with positive integral coefficients. This formula implies both the symmetry and the unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. In this paper, we prove a $q$-analogue of this expansion for Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials as well as a similar formula for Chow-Gessel's $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $B$. We shall give some applications of these two formulae, which involve two new sequences of polynomials in the variable $q$ with positive integral coefficients. An open p…
Since 1950s, mathematicians have successfully interpreted the traditional Eulerian numbers and $q-$Eulerian numbers combinatorially. In this paper, the authors give a combinatorial interpretation to the general Eulerian numbers defined on general arithmetic progressions { a, a+d, a+2d,...}.
The Eulerian triangle is a classical array of combinatorial numbers defined by a linear recursion. The associated boundary problem asks one to find all extreme nonnegative solutions to a dual recursion. Exploiting connections with random permutations and Markov chains we show that the boundary is discrete and explicitly identify its elements.
A symmetry of $(t,q)$-Eulerian numbers of type $B$ is combinatorially proved by defining an involution preserving many important statistics on the set of permutation tableaux of type $B$. This involution also proves a symmetry of the generating polynomial $\hat{D}_{n, k}(p,q,r)$ of number of crossings and alignments, and hence $q$-Eulerian numbers of type $A$ defined by L. Williams. By considering a restriction of our bijection, we were led to define a new statistic on the permutations of type $D$ and $(t,q)$-Eulerian numbers of type $D$, which is proved to have a nice symmetry as well. We con…
The purpose of this paper is to show that some combinatorial sequences, such as second-order Eulerian numbers and Eulerian numbers of type $B$, can be generated by context-free grammars.
In this paper we consider mixed volumes of combinations of hypersimplices. These numbers, called "mixed Eulerian numbers", were first considered by A. Postnikov and were shown to satisfy many properties related to Eulerian numbers, Catalan numbers, binomial coefficients, etc. We give a general combinatorial interpretation for mixed Eulerian numbers and prove the above properties combinatorially. In particular, we show that each mixed Eulerian number enumerates a certain set of permutations in $S_n$. We also prove several new properties of mixed Eulerian numbers using our methods. Finally, we c…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a properly face 2-coloured (say black and white) \break piecewise-linear triangulation of the sphere with vertex set $V$. Consider the abelian group $\mathcal{A}_W$ generated by the set $V$, with relations $r+c+s=0$ for all white triangles with vertices $r$, $c$ and $s$. The group $\mathcal{A}_B$ can be defined similarly, using black triangles. These groups are related in the following manner $\mathcal{A}_W\cong\mathcal{A}_B\cong\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathcal{C}$ where $\mathcal{C}$ is a finite abelian group. The finite torsion subgroup $\mathcal{C}$ is referred …
Remixed Eulerian numbers are a polynomial $q$-deformation of Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers. They arose naturally in previous work by the authors concerning the permutahedral variety and subsume well-known families of polynomials such as $q$-binomial coefficients and Garsia--Remmel's $q$-hit numbers. We study their combinatorics in more depth. As polynomials in $q$, they are shown to be symmetric and unimodal. By interpreting them as computing success probabilities in a simple probabilistic process we arrive at a combinatorial interpretation involving weighted trees. By decomposing the per…
We introduce new recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials, and interpret them combinatorially. These recurrences are analogous to a well-known recurrence for the type A Eulerian polynomials. We also discuss their relationship to polynomials introduced by Savage and Visontai in connection to the real-rootedness of the corresponding Eulerian polynomials.
This paper introduces a colored generalization of the Eulerian polynomials, denoted the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials. We first compute these polynomials by taking the $h$-vector of the $α$-colored permutohedron, a colored analog of the permutohedron which we develop. We also arrive at the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials combinatorially by defining a new notion of descent for colored permutations.
In this work we propose a combinatorial model that generalizes the standard definition of permutation. Our model generalizes the degenerate Eulerian polynomials and numbers of Carlitz from 1979 and provides missing combinatorial proofs for some relations on the degenerate Eulerian numbers.
We show how the combinatorial interpretation of the normalized median Genocchi numbers in terms of multiset tuples, defined by Hetyei in his study of the alternation acyclic tournaments, is bijectively equivalent to previous models like the normalized Dumont permutations or the Dellac configurations, and we extend the interpretation to the Kreweras triangle.
We give several families of polynomials which are related by Eulerian summation operators. They satisfy interesting combinatorial properties like being integer-valued at integral points. This involves nearby-symmetries and a recursion for the values at half-integral points. We also obtain identities for super Catalan numbers.
Binomial-Eulerian polynomials were introduced by Postnikov, Reiner and Williams. In this paper, properties of the binomial-Eulerian polynomials, including recurrence relations and generating functions are studied. We present three constructive proofs of the recurrence relations for binomial-Eulerian polynomials. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the Betti number of the complement of the k-equal real hyperplane arrangement.
We investigate the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials and a notion of descents introduced in a recent paper of Hedmark and show that such polynomials can be computed as a polynomial encoding descents computed over a quotient of the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_α\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$. Moreover, we consider the flag descent statistic computed over this same quotient and find that the flag Eulerian polynomial remains palindromic. We prove that the flag descent polynomial is palindromic over this same quotient by giving a combinatorial proof that the flag descent statistic is symmetrically distributed ov…
In a recent work, the combinatorial interpretation of the polynomial alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) counting the number of Monotone Triangles with bottom row k1 < k2 < ... < kn was extended to weakly decreasing sequences k1 >= k2 >= ... >= kn. In this case the evaluation of the polynomial is equal to a signed enumeration of objects called Decreasing Monotone Triangles. In this paper we define Generalized Monotone Triangles - a joint generalization of both ordinary Monotone Triangles and Decreasing Monotone Triangles. As main result of the paper we prove that the evaluation of alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) at a…
In this paper we present grammatical interpretations of the alternating Eulerian polynomials of types A and B. As applications, we derive several properties of the type B alternating Eulerian polynomials, including combinatorial expansions, recurrence relations and generating functions. We establish an interesting connection between alternating Eulerian polynomials of type B and left peak polynomials of permutations in the symmetric group, which implies that the type B alternating Eulerian polynomials have gamma-vectors alternate in sign.
In recent years, Alexandersson and others proved combinatorial formulas for the Schur function expansion of the horizontal-strip LLT polynomial $G_λ(x;q)$ in some special cases. We associate a weighted graph $Π$ to $λ$ and we use it to express a linear relation among LLT polynomials. We apply this relation to prove an explicit combinatorial Schur-positive expansion of $G_λ(x;q)$ whenever $Π$ is triangle-free. We also prove that the largest power of $q$ in the LLT polynomial is the total edge weight of our graph.
In this paper, we first present combinatorial proofs of a kind of expansions of the Eulerian polynomials of types A and B, and then we introduce Stirling permutations of the second kind. In particular, we count Stirling permutations of the second kind by their cycle ascent plateaus, fixed points and cycles.
Weights of permutations were originally introduced by Dugan, Glennon, Gunnells, and Steingrímsson (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 164:24-49, 2019) in their study of the combinatorics of tiered trees. Given a permutation $σ$ viewed as a sequence of integers, computing the weight of $σ$ involves recursively counting descents of certain subpermutations of $σ$. Using this weight function, one can define a $q$-analog $E_n(x,q)$ of the Eulerian polynomials. We prove two main results regarding weights of permutations and the polynomials $E_n(x,q)$. First, we show that the coefficients of $…
The number of Monotone Triangles with bottom row k1 < k2 < ... < kn is given by a polynomial alpha(n; k1,...,kn) in n variables. The evaluation of this polynomial at weakly decreasing sequences k1 >= k2 >= ... >= kn turns out to be interpretable as signed enumeration of new combinatorial objects called Decreasing Monotone Triangles. There exist surprising connections between the two classes of objects -- in particular it is shown that alpha(n; 1,2,...,n) = alpha(2n; n,n,n-1,n-1,...,1,1). In perfect analogy to the correspondence between Monotone Triangles and Alternating Sign Matrices, the set …
The $(q,r)$-Eulerian polynomials are the $(\maj-$$\exc,\fix,\exc)$ enumerative polynomials of permutations. Using Shareshian and Wachs' exponential generating function of these Eulerian polynomials, Chung and Graham proved two symmetrical $q$-Eulerian identities and asked for bijective proofs. We provide such proofs using Foata and Han's three-variable statistic $(\inv-$$\lec,\pix,\lec)$. We also prove a new recurrence formula for the $(q,r)$-Eulerian polynomials and study a $q$-analogue of Chung and Graham's restricted descent polynomials. In particular, we obtain a generalized symmetrical id…
Maxmin trees are labeled trees with the property that each vertex is either a local maximum or a local minimum. Such trees were originally introduced by Postnikov, who gave a formula to count them and different combinatorial interpretations for their number. In this paper we generalize this construction and define tiered trees by allowing more than two classes of vertices. Tiered trees arise naturally when counting the absolutely indecomposable representations of certain quivers, and also when one enumerates torus orbits on certain homogeneous varieties. We define a notion of weight for tiered…
Article presents a short investigation into some properties of the Moser polynomials which appear in various problems from algebraic combinatorics. For instance, these polynomials can be used to solve the Generalized Moser's Problem on multiset recovery: Can a collection (multiset) of $n$ numbers can be uniquely restored given the collection of its $s$-sums? We prove some explicit formulas showing relationships between Moser polynomials and such popular algebraic combinatorial sequences as Eulerian and Stirling numbers.
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combina…
We give two combinatorial proofs of the fact that the number of loopless digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$ with no isolated vertices and with exactly one Eulerian tour up to a cyclic shift is $\frac{1}{2}(n-1)!C_{n}$, where $C_{n}$ denotes the $n$-th Catalan number. We construct a bijection with a set of labeled rooted plane trees and with a set of valid parenthesis arrangements.
The generalized Lucas numbers are polynomials in two variables with nonnegative integer coefficients. Lucas versions of some combinatorial numbers with known formulas in terms of quotient and products of nonnegative integers have been recently given by replacing the integers in those formulas with their corresponding Lucas analogues. We instead use a recursive approach. In this sense, we give a recursive formula for Lucas-Narayana numbers derived from a recent formula in terms of Lucasnomials (the explicit Lucas version of binomial numbers). We propose a recursive definition for a Lucas analog…
We provide combinatorial interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the basic Eulerian polynomials that enumerate permutations by the excedance statistic and the major index as well as the corresponding $γ$-coefficients for derangements. Our results refine the classical $γ$-positivity results for the Eulerian polynomials and the derangement polynomials. The main tools are Brändén's modified Foata--Strehl action on permutations and the recent triple statistic (des, rix, aid) equidistibuted with (exc, fix, maj).
We observe that three context-free grammars of Dumont can be brought to a common ground, via the idea of transformations of grammars, proposed by Ma-Ma-Yeh. Then we develop a unified perspective to investigate several combinatorial objects in connection with the bivariate Eulerian polynomials. We call this approach the Dumont ansatz. As applications, we provide grammatical treatments, in the spirit of the symbolic method, of relations on the Springer numbers, the Euler numbers, the three kinds of peak polynomials, an identity of Petersen, and the two kinds of derivative polynomials, introduced…
Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.
Eulerian polynomials are fundamental in combinatorics and algebra. In this paper we study the linear transformation $\mathcal{A} : \mathbb{R}[t] \to \mathbb{R}[t]$ defined by $\mathcal{A}(t^n) = A_n(t)$, where $A_n(t)$ denotes the $n$-th Eulerian polynomial. We give combinatorial, topological and Ehrhart theoretic interpretations of the operator $\mathcal{A}$, and investigate questions of unimodality and real-rootedness. In particular, we disprove a conjecture by Brenti (1989) concerning the preservation of real zeros, and generalize and strengthen recent results of Haglund and Zhang (2019) on…
We study two generalizations of the gamma-expansion of Eulerian polynomials from the viewpoint of the decompositions of statistics. We first present an expansion formula of the trivariate Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions of permutations. And then, inspired by the work of Chen and Fu on the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, we show the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of ascents, descents and j-plateaux of k-Stirling…
In this paper we first present summation formulas for $k$-order Eulerian polynomials and $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials. We then present combinatorial expansions of $(c(x)D)^n$ in terms of inversion sequences as well as $k$-Young tableaux, where $c(x)$ is a differentiable function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. We define the $g$-indexes of $k$-Young tableaux and Young tableaux, which have important applications in combinatorics. By establishing some relations between $k$-Young tableaux and standard Young tableaux, we express Eulerian polynomials, second-ord…
We find a combinatorial interpretation of Shareshian and Wachs' $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials, which leads to an alternative proof of their $q$-$γ$-positivity using group actions. Motivated by the sign-balance identity of Désarménien--Foata--Loday for the $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{inv})$-Eulerian polynomials, we further investigate the sign-balance of the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We show the unimodality of the resulting signed binomial-Eulerian polynomials by exploiting their continued fraction expansion and making use of a new quadratic recursion for the $q$-binomial-Eulerian poly…
We develop a unified theory of Eulerian spaces by combining the combinatorial theory of infinite, locally finite Eulerian graphs as introduced by Diestel and Kühn with the topological theory of Eulerian continua defined as irreducible images of the circle, as proposed by Bula, Nikiel and Tymchatyn. First, we clarify the notion of an Eulerian space and establish that all competing definitions in the literature are in fact equivalent. Next, responding to an unsolved problem of Treybig and Ward from 1981, we formulate a combinatorial conjecture for characterising the Eulerian spaces, in a manner …
A formula of Stembridge states that the permutation peak polynomials and descent polynomials are connected via a quadratique transformation. The aim of this paper is to establish the cycle analogue of Stembridge's formula by using cycle peaks and excedances of permutations. We prove a series of new general formulae expressing polynomials counting permutations by various excedance statistics in terms of refined Eulerian polynomials. Our formulae are comparable with Zhuang's generalizations [Adv. in Appl. Math. 90 (2017) 86-144] using descent statistics of permutations. Our methods include permu…
We define some generalizations of the classical descent and inversion statistics on signed permutations that arise from the work of Sack and Ulfarsson [20] and called after width-k descents and width-k inversionsof type A in Davis's work [8]. Using the aforementioned new statistics, we derive some new generalizations of Eulerian polynomials of type A, B and D. It should also be noticed that we establish the Gamma-positivity of the "width-k" Eulerian polynomials and we give a combinatorial interpretation of finite sequences associated to these new polynomials using quasisymmetric functions and …
Erman, Smith, and Várilly-Alvarado showed that the expected number of doubly monic Laurent polynomials $f(z) = z^{-m} + a_{-m+1}z^{-m+1} + \cdots + a_{n-1}z^{n-1} + z^n$ whose first $m+n-1$ powers have vanishing constant term is the Eulerian number $\brac{m+n-1}{m-1}$, as well as a more refined result about sparse Laurent polynomials. We give an alternate proof of these results using Bernstein's theorem that clarifies the connection between these objects. In the process, we show that a refinement of Eulerian numbers gives a combinatorial interpretation for volumes of certain rational hyperplan…
In this paper, we give a type B analogue of the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials. Properties of this kind of polynomials, including combinatorial interpretations, recurrence relations and gamma-positivity are studied. In particular, we show that the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials of type B are gamma-positive when $k>0$. Moreover, we obtain the corresponding results for derangements of type B. We show that a type B 1/k-derangement polynomials $d_n^B(x;k)$ are bi-gamma-positive when $k\geq 1/2$. In particular, we get a symmetric decomposition of $d_n^B(x;1/2)$ in terms of the classical derangement polynomials…
We generalize a parity result of Fleishner and Stiebitz that being combined with Alon--Tarsi polynomial method allowed them to prove that a 4-regular graph formed by a Hamiltonian cycle and several disjoint triangles is always 3-choosable. Also we present a modification of polynomial method and show how it gives slightly more combinatorial information about colourings than direct application of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.
Pondering upon the grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees, we come to the realization that the grammatical labels play a role as records of chopped off leaves of the original increasing binary trees. While such an understanding is purely psychological, it does give rise to an efficient apparatus to tackle the partial $γ$-positivity of the Eulearian polynomials on multiset Stirling permutations, as long as we bear in mind the combinatorial meanings of the labels $x$ and $y$ in the Gessel representation of a $k$-Stirling permutation by means of an increasing $(k+1)$-ary tree. More …
For any northeast path $ν$, we define two bivariate polynomials associated with the $ν$-associahedron: the $F$- and the $H$-triangle. We prove combinatorially that we can obtain one from the other by an invertible transformation of variables. These polynomials generalize the classical $F$- and $H$-triangles of F.~Chapoton in type $A$. Our proof is completely new and has the advantage of providing a combinatorial explanation of the relation between the $F$- and $H$-triangle.
In 2008 Brändén proved a $(p,q)$-analogue of the $γ$-expansion formula for Eulerian polynomials and conjectured the divisibility of the $γ$-coefficient $γ_{n,k}(p,q)$ by $(p+q)^k$. As a follow-up, in 2012 Shin and Zeng showed that the fraction $γ_{n,k}(p, q)/(p + q)^k$ is a polynomial in $\N[p,q]$. The aim of this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of the latter polynomial in terms of André permutations, a class of objects first defined and studied by Foata, Schützenberger and Strehl in the 1970s. It turns out that our result provides an answer to a recent open problem of Han, whi…
