We continue the study of a class of topological $\mathcal{L}$-fields endowed with a generic derivation $δ$, focussing on describing definable groups. We show that one can associate to an $\mathcal{L}_δ$ definable group a type $\mathcal{L}$-definable topological group. We use the group configuration tool in o-minimal structures as developed by K. Peterzil.
We study finite-dimensional groups definable in models of the theory of real closed fields with a generic derivation (also known as CODF). We prove that any such group definably embeds in a semialgebraic group. We extend the results to several more general contexts; strongly model complete theories of large geometric fields with a generic derivation, model complete o-minimal expansions of RCF with a generic derivation, open theories of topological fields with a generic derivation. We also give a general theorem on recovering a definable group from generic data in the context of geometric struc…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional regular and Hausdorff topological space definable in a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal structure of the second kind having definable bounded multiplication being affine.
For certain theories of existentially closed topological differential fields, we show that there is a strong relationship between $\mathcal L\cup\{D\}$-definable sets and their $\mathcal L$-reducts, where $\mathcal L$ is a relational expansion of the field language and $D$ a symbol for a derivation. This enables us to associate with an $\mathcal L\cup\{D\}$-definable group in models of such theories, a local $\mathcal L$-definable group. As a byproduct, we show that in closed ordered differential fields, one has the descending chain condition on centralisers.
Dense pairs of geometric topological fields have tame open core, that is, every definable open subset in the pair is already definable in the reduct. We fix a minor gap in the published version of van den Dries's seminal work on dense pairs of o-minimal groups, and show that every definable unary function in a dense pair of geometric topological fields agrees with a definable function in the reduct, off a small definable subset, that is, a definable set internal to the predicate. For certain dense pairs of geometric topological fields without the independence property, whenever the underlying …
In this paper we study analogues of amenability for topological groups in the context of definable structures. We prove fixed point theorems for such groups. More importantly, we propose definitions for definable actions and continuous functions from definable groups to topological spaces which might prove useful in other contexts.
We initiate a study of definable topological dynamics for groups definable in metastable theories. Specifically, we consider the special linear group $G = SL_2$ with entries from $M = \mathbb{C}((t))$; the field of formal Laurent series with complex coefficients. We prove such a group is not definably amenable, find a suitable group decomposition, and describe the minimal flows of the additive and multiplicative groups of $\mathbb{C}((t))$. The main result is an explicit description of the minimal flow and Ellis Group of $(G(M),S_G(M))$ and we observe that this is not isomorphic to $G/G^{00}$,…
We obtain some new results on the topology of unary definable sets in densely ordered Abelian groups of burden groups of burden 2. In the special case in which the structure has dp-rank 2, we show that the existence of an infinite definable discrete set precludes the definability of a set which is dense and codense in an interval, or of a set which is topologically like the Cantor middle-third set. If the structure has burden 2 and both an infinite discrete set D and a dense-codense set X are definable, then translates of X must witness the Independence Property. In the last section, an explic…
We consider definable topological spaces of dimension one in o-minimal structures, and state several equivalent conditions for when such a topological space $\left(X,τ\right)$ is definably homeomorphic to an affine definable space (namely, a definable subset of $M^{n}$ with the induced subspace topology). One of the main results says that it is sufficient for $X$ to be regular and decompose into finitely many definably connected components.
A visceral structure on M is given by a definable base for a uniform topology on its universe in which all basic open sets are infinite and any infinite definable subset X of M has non-empty interior. This context includes o-minimal ordered groups, p-adic fields, and other examples. Assuming only viscerality, we show that the definable sets in M satisfy some desirable topological tameness conditions. For example, any definable unary function on M has a finite set of discontinuities; any definable function on a Cartesian power of M is continuous on a nonempty open set; and assuming definable fi…
Let K be an expansion of either an ordered field or a valued field. Given a definable set X $\subseteq$ Km let C(X) be the ring of continuous definable functions from X to K. Under very mild assumptions on the geometry of X and on the structure K, in particular when K is o-minimal or P-minimal, or an expansion of a local field, we prove that the ring of integers Z is interpretable in C(X). If K is o-minimal and X is definably connected of pure dimension 2, then C(X) defines the subring Z. If K is P-minimal and X has no isolated points, then there is a discrete ring Z contained in K …
We study definable topological dynamics of some algebraic group actions over an arbitrary NIP field $K$. We show that the Ellis group of the universal definable flow of $\mathrm{SL}_2(K)$ is non-trivial if the multiplicative group of $K$ is not type-definably connected, providing a way to find multiple counterexamples to the Ellis group conjecture, particularly in the case of dp-minimal fields. We also study some structure theory of algebraic groups over $K$ with definable f-generics.
We consider interpretable topological spaces and topological groups in a $p$-adically closed field $K$. We identify a special class of "admissible topologies" with topological tameness properties like generic continuity, similar to the topology on definable subsets of $K^n$. We show every interpretable set has at least one admissible topology, and every interpretable group has a unique admissible group topology. We then consider definable compactness (in the sense of Fornasiero) on interpretable groups. We show that an interpretable group is definably compact if and only if it has finitely sat…
We study directed sets definable in o-minimal structures, showing that in expansions of ordered fields these admit cofinal definable curves, as well as a suitable analogue in expansions of ordered groups, and furthermore that no analogue holds in full generality. We use the theory of tame pairs to extend the results in the field case to definable families of sets with the finite intersection property. We then apply our results to the study of definable topologies. We prove that all definable topological spaces display properties akin to first countability, and give several characterizations of…
We study groups and rings definable in d-minimal expansions of ordered fields. We generalize to such objects some known results from o-minimality. In particular, we prove that we can endow a definable group with a definable topology making it a topological group, and that a definable ring of dimension at least 1 and without zero divisors is a skew field.
For a group $G$ definable in a first order structure $M$ we develop basic topological dynamics in the category of definable $G$-flows. In particular, we give a description of the universal definable $G$-ambit and of the semigroup operation on it. We find a natural epimorphism from the Ellis group of this flow to the definable Bohr compactification of $G$, that is to the quotient $G^*/{G^*}^{00}_M$ (where $G^*$ is the interpretation of $G$ in a monster model). More generally, we obtain these results locally, i.e. in the category of $Δ$-definable $G$-flows for any fixed set $Δ$ of formulas of an…
This paper addresses some questions about dimension theory for P-minimal structures. We show that, for any definable set A, the dimension of the frontier of A is strictly smaller than the dimension of A itself, and that A has a decomposition into definable, pure-dimensional components. This is then used to show that the intersection of finitely many definable dense subsets of A is still dense in A. As an application, we obtain that any m-ary definable function is continuous on a dense, relatively open subset of its domain, thereby answering a question that was originally posed by Haskell and M…
We consider an arbitrary topological group $G$ definable in a structure $\mathcal M$, such that some basis for the topology of $G$ consists of sets definable in $\mathcal M$. To each such group $G$ we associate a compact $G$-space of partial types $S^μ_G(M)=\{p_μ:p\in S_G(M)\}$ which is the quotient of the usual type space $S_G(M)$ by the relation of two types being "infinitesimally close to each other". In the o-minimal setting, if $p$ is a definable type then it has a corresponding definable subgroup $Stab_μ(p)$, which is the stabilizer of $p_μ$. This group is nontrivial when $p$ is unbounde…
We discuss definable compactifications and topological dynamics. For G a group definable in some structure M, we define notions of "definable" compactification of G and "definable" action of G on a compact space X (definable G-flow), where the latter is under a definability of types assumption on M. We describe the universal definable compactification of G as G*/G*00_M and the universal definable G-ambit as the type space S_{G}(M). We also prove existence and uniqueness of "universal minimal definable G-flows", and discuss issues of amenability and extreme amenability in this definable categor…
We construct a topology on a given algebraically closed field with a distinguished subfield which is also algebraically closed. This topology is finer than Zariski topology and it captures the sets definable in the pair of algebraically closed fields as above; in the sense that definable sets are exactly the constructible sets in this topology.
We study the definable topological dynamics $(G,S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is a structure and $G$ is a group definable in $M$. In \cite{Newelski-I}, Newelski raised a question of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types in definable topological dynamics. In \cite{YZ-Sta}, we introduced the notion of stationarity, showing the answer is positive when $G$ is a stationary definably amenable group definable over the field of $p$-adic numbers or an $o$-minimal expansion of real closed field. In this paper, we continue with the work of \c…
Let $R$ be an o-minimal expansion of the real field. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of an $R$-definable metric space is an $R$-definable function of the parameters defining the metric space. We also show that the Hausdorff dimension of an $R$-definable metric space is an element of the field of powers of $R$. The proof uses a basic topological dichotomy for definable metric spaces due to the second author, and the work of the first author and Shiota on measure theory over nonarchimedean o-minimal structures.
We prove that unstable dp-finite fields admit definable V-topologies. As a consequence, the henselianity conjecture for dp-finite fields implies the Shelah conjecture for dp-finite fields. This gives a conceptually simpler proof of the classification of dp-finite fields of positive characteristic. For $n \ge 1$, we define a local class of "$W_n$-topological fields", generalizing V-topological fields. A $W_1$-topology is the same thing as a V-topology, and a $W_n$-topology is some higher-rank analogue. If $K$ is an unstable dp-finite field, then the canonical topology is a definable $W_n$-topol…
Following the works of Newelski we continue the study of the relations between abstract topological dynamics and generalized stable group theory. We show that the Ellis theory, applied to the action of G(M) on its type space, for G an fsg group in a NIP theory, and M any model, yields the quotient G/G^00.
We consider locally o-minimal structures possessing tame topological properties shared by models of DCTC and uniformly locally o-minimal expansions of the second kind of densely linearly ordered abelian groups. We derive basic properties of dimension of a set definable in the structures including the addition property, which is the dimension equality for definable maps whose fibers are equi-dimensional. A decomposition theorem into quasi-special submanifolds is also demonstrated.
We study the definable topological dynamics $(G(M), S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is either an $o$-minimal structure or a $p$-adically closed field, and $G$ a definable amenable group. We focus on the problem raised by Neweslki of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types, showing that the answer is positive when $G$ has boundedly many global weakly generic types. We also give two "minimal counterexamples" where $G$ has unboundedly many global weakly generic types, extending the main results of "On minimal flows, definably amenable gro…
We study the flow (G(Qp); SG(Qp)) of trigonalizable algebraic group acting on its type space, focusing on the problem raised in [17] of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types if the group has global definable f-generic types, equivalently whether the union of minimal subflows of a suitable type space is closed. We will give a description of of f-generic types of trigonalizable algebraic groups, and prove that every f-generic type is almost periodic.
We define a discrete closure operation for definably complete locally o-minimal structures $\mathcal M$. The pair of the underlying set of $\mathcal M$ and the discrete closure operation forms a pregeometry. We define the rank of a definable set over a set of parameters using this fact. A definable set $X$ is of dimension equal to the rank of $X$ over the set of parameters of a formula defining the set $X$. The structure $\mathcal M$ is simultaneously a first-order topological structure. The dimension rank of a set definable in the first-order topological structure $\mathcal M$ also coincides …
This work can be thought as a contribution to the model theory of group extensions. We study the groups G which are interpretable in the disjoint union of two structures (seen as a two-sorted structure). We show that if one of the two structures is superstable of finite Lascar rank and the Lascar rank is definable, then G is an extension of a group internal to the (possibly) unstable sort by a definable subgroup internal to the stable sort. In the final part of the paper we show that if the unstable sort is an o-minimal expansion of the reals, then G has a natural Lie structure and the extensi…
We present a diagram surveying equivalence or strict implication for properties of different nature (algebraic, model theoretic, topological, etc.) about groups definable in o-minimal structures. All results are well-known and an extensive bibliography is provided.
This is a largely expository paper about how groups arise or are of interest in model theory. Included are the following topics: classifying groups definable in specific structures or theories and the relation to algebraic groups, groups definable in stable, simple and NIP theories, definable compactifications of groups, definable Galois theory (including differential Galois theory), connections with topological dynamics, model theory of the free group.
We study strong types and Galois groups in model theory from a topological and descriptive-set-theoretical point of view, leaning heavily on topological dynamical tools. More precisely, we give an abstract (not model theoretic) treatment of problems related to cardinality and Borel cardinality of strong types, quotients of definable groups and related objecets, generalising (and often improving) essentially all hitherto known results in this area. In particular, we show that under reasonable assumptions, strong type spaces are "locally" quotients of compact Polish groups. It follows that they …
We prove several theorems relating amenability of groups in various categories (discrete, definable, topological, automorphism group) to model-theoretic invariants (quotients by connected components, Lascar Galois group, G-compactness, ...). For example, if $M$ is a countable, $ω$-categorical structure and $Aut(M)$ is amenable, as a topological group, then the Lascar Galois group $Gal_{L}(T)$ of the theory $T$ of $M$ is compact, Hausdorff (also over any finite set of parameters), that is $T$ is G-compact. An essentially special case is that if $Aut(M)$ is extremely amenable, then $Gal_{L}(T)$ …
We study a class of tame $\mathcal{L}$-theories $T$ of topological fields and their $\mathcal{L}_δ$-extension $T_δ^*$ by a generic derivation $δ$. The topological fields under consideration include henselian valued fields of characteristic 0 and real closed fields. We show that the associated expansion by a generic derivation has $\mathcal{L}$-open core (i.e., every $\mathcal{L}_δ$-definable open set is $\mathcal{L}$-definable) and derive both a cell decomposition theorem and a transfer result of elimination of imaginaries. Other tame properties of $T$ such as relative elimination of field sor…
In this paper a systematic study of the category GTS of generalized topological spaces (in the sense of H. Delfs and M. Knebusch) and their strictly continuous mappings begins. Some completeness and cocompleteness results are achieved. Generalized topological spaces help to reconstruct the important elements of the theory of locally definable and weakly definable spaces in the wide context of weakly topological structures.
We consider definable topological dynamics for $NIP$ groups admitting certain decompositions in terms of specific classes of definably amenable groups. For such a group, we find a description of the Ellis group of its universal definable flow. This description shows that the Ellis group is of bounded size. Under additional assumptions, it is shown to be independent of the model, proving a conjecture proposed by Newelski. Finally we apply the results to new classes of groups definable in o-minimal structures, generalizing all of the previous results for this setting.
We establish the first global results for groups definable in tame expansions of o-minimal structures. Let $\mathcal N$ be an expansion of an o-minimal structure $\mathcal M$ that admits a good dimension theory. The setting includes dense pairs of o-minimal structures, expansions of $\mathcal M$ by a Mann group, or by a subgroup of an elliptic curve, or a dense independent set. We prove: (1) a Weil's group chunk theorem that guarantees a definable group with an o-minimal group chunk is o-minimal, (2) a full characterization of those definable groups that are o-minimal as those groups that have…
Let $\mathcal{F}=(F;+,\cdot,0,1,D)$ be a differentially closed field. We consider the question of definability of the derivation $D$ in reducts of $\mathcal{F}$ of the form $\mathcal{F}_{R}=(F;+,\cdot,0,1,P)_{P \in R}$ where $R$ is a collection of definable sets in $\mathcal{F}$. We give examples and non-examples and establish some criteria for definability of $D$. Finally, using the tools developed in the paper we prove that under the assumption of inductiveness of $Th(\mathcal{F}_{R})$ model completeness is a necessary condition for definability of $D$. This can be seen as part of a broader …
For a group $G$ first order definable in a structure $M$, we continue the study of the "definable topological dynamics" of $G$. The special case when all subsets of $G$ are definable in the given structure $M$ is simply the usual topological dynamics of the discrete group $G$; in particular, in this case, the words "externally definable" and "definable" can be removed in the results described below. Here we consider the mutual interactions of three notions or objects: a certain model-theoretic invariant $G^{*}/(G^{*})^{000}_{M}$ of $G$, which appears to be "new" in the classical discrete case …
We study amenability of definable and topological groups. Among our main technical tools is an elaboration on and strengthening of the Massicot-Wagner version of the stabilizer theorem, and some results around measures. As an application we show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the Bohr compactification of $G$ coincides with a certain "weak Bohr compactification" introduced in [24]. Formally, $G^{00}_{topo} = G^{000}_{topo}$. We also prove wide generalizations of this result, implying in particular its extension to a "definable-topological" context, confirming the main conjec…
Decomposable ordered structures were introduced in \cite{OnSt} to develop a general framework to study `finite-dimensional' totally ordered structures. This paper continues this work to include decomposable structures on which a ordered group operation is defined on the structure. The main result at this level of generality asserts that any such group is supersolvable, and that topologically it is homeomorphic to the product of o-minimal groups. Then, working in an o-minimal ordered field $\mathcal R$ satisfying some additional assumptions, in Sections 3-7 definable ordered groups of dimension…
We study the $p$-adic algebraic groups $G$ from the definable topological-dynamical point of view. We consider the case that $M$ is an arbitrary $p$-adic closed field and $G$ an algebraic group over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admitting an Iwasawa decompostion $G=KB$, where $K$ is open and definably compact over ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and $B$ is a borel subgroup of $G$ over ${\mathbb Q}_p$. Our main result is an explicit description of the minimal subflow and Ellis Group of the universal definable $G(M)$-flow $S_G(M^{\text{ext}})$. We prove that the Ellis group of $S_G(M^{\text{ext}})$ is isomorphic to the Elli…
For first-order expansions of the field of real numbers, nondefinability of the set of natural numbers is equivalent to equality of topological and Assouad dimension on images of closed definable sets under definable continuous maps.
Let $K$ be a field. The étale open topology on the $K$-points $V(K)$ of a $K$-variety $V$ was introduced in our previous work. The étale open topology is non-discrete if and only if $K$ is large. If $K$ is separably, real, $p$-adically closed then the étale open topology agrees with the Zariski, order, valuation topology, respectively. We show that existentially definable sets in perfect large fields behave well with respect to this topology: such sets are finite unions of étale open subsets of Zariski closed sets. This implies that existentially definable sets in arbitrary perfect large field…
We consider the question of when an expansion of a topological structure has the property that every open set definable in the expansion is definable in the original structure. This question is related to and inspired by recent work of Dolich, Miller and Steinhorn on the property of having o-minimal open core. We answer the question in a fairly general setting and provide conditions which in practice are often easy to check. We give a further characterisation in the special case of an expansion by a generic predicate.
We present the (Lascar) Galois group of any countable theory as a quotient of a compact Polish group by an $F_σ$ normal subgroup: in general, as a topological group, and under NIP, also in terms of Borel cardinality. This allows us to obtain similar results for arbitrary strong types defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$. As an easy conclusion of our main theorem, we get the main result from our recent paper joint with Andand Pillay, which says that for any strong type defined on a single complete type over $\emptyset$, smoothness is equivalent to type-definability. We also explai…
