In this text we review various relations between building blocks of closed and open string amplitudes at tree-level and genus one. We explain that KLT relations between tree-level closed and open string amplitudes follow from the holomorphic factorisation of conformal correlation functions on conformal blocks. We give a simple hands-on evaluation of the $α'$-expansion of tree-level closed string amplitudes displaying the special single-valued nature of the coefficients. We show that the same techniques can be used also at genus-one, where we give a new proof of the single-valued nature of the coefficients of 2-point closed string amplitudes. We conclude by giving an overview of some open problems.
The compactness of the closed string in the classical Type II string theory reveals the duality, whereas the compactness of the open string reveals that the end of the string is on the hypersurface which satisfies the Dirichlet boundary condition.
We calculate the simultaneous double-soft limit of two massless closed strings scattering with any number of closed string tachyons to the subleading order at the tree level. The limit factorizes the scattering amplitude into a double-soft factor multiplying the pure tachyon subamplitude, suggesting a universal double-soft theorem for the massless closed string. We confirm an existing result for the double-soft graviton in an on-shell equivalent, but different form, while also establishing the double-soft factorization behavior of the string dilaton and of the Kalb-Ramond state, as well as the…
This is the first of a series of three papers on open string field theories based on Witten star product deformed with a gauge invariant open/closed coupling. This deformation is a tree-level tadpole which destabilizes the initial perturbative vacuum. We discuss the existence of vacuum-shift solutions which cancel the tadpole and represent a new configuration where the initial D-brane system has adapted to the change in the closed string background. As an example we consider the bulk deformation which changes the compactification radius and, to first order in the deformation, we reproduce the …
We revisit the spectrum of closed strings in the Lorentzian signature 2D black hole in string theory. Using the description of the black hole as a gauged WZNW model, we argue that the spectrum of the closed strings contain states from the spectrally flowed versions of the principal continuous and also the principal discrete series of $SL_2({\mathbb R})$. We identify the string configurations that correspond to these states. Using vector-axial duality, we also find new localized states that are essentially stringy in origin.
The main geometric ingredient of the closed string field theory are the string vertices, the collections of string diagrams describing the elementary closed string interactions, satisfying the quantum Batalian-Vilkovisky master equation. They can be characterized using the Riemann surfaces endowed with the metric solving the generalized minimal area problem. However, an adequately developed theory of such Riemann surfaces is not available yet, and consequently description of the string vertices via Riemann surfaces with the minimal area metric fails to provide practical tools for performing ca…
We construct a family of hyperbolic string vertices in the oriented open-closed string field theory, generalizing the recent result on hyperbolic closed string vertices by Costello and Zwiebach. The vertices are described by certain bordered hyperbolic surfaces and we explain relevant collar theorems which provide restrictions on the systolic conditions for the hyperbolic vertices. We also give explicit descriptions of the vertices for all zero and one-dimensional moduli spaces.
In formulating covariant closed string field theories, we have always used closed string fields with the level-matching condition. Recently, open superstring field theories including the Ramond sector were constructed, and one approach was to use open superstring fields with a constraint analogous to the level-matching condition for closed string fields. There is another approach developed by Sen, where no constraints are imposed on open superstring fields but additional free string fields are introduced so that covariant kinetic terms for the Ramond sector were constructed. Motivated by this …
We consider deformations of D-brane systems induced by a change in the closed string background in the framework of bosonic open-closed string field theory, where it is possible to unambiguously tame infrared divergences originating from both open and closed string degenerations. A closed string classical solution induces a tadpole for the open strings which shifts the open string vacuum and generates a cosmological constant composed of two terms: one which is directly related to the closed string solution and the other which depends on the open string vacuum shift. We show that only the sum o…
