Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a rigid obstacle embedded in a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium in two dimensions. In this paper, a novel boundary integral formulation is proposed and its highly accurate numerical method is developed for the elastic obstacle scattering problem. More specifically, based on the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary integral equation with singular kernels. A regularized system is constructed in order to handle the degenerated integral operators. The semi-discrete and full-discrete schemes are studied for the boundary integral system by using the trigonometric collocation method. Convergence is established for the numerical schemes in some appropriate Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments are presented for both smooth and nonsmooth obstacles to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.
In this paper, we consider the scattering of a plane wave by a rigid obstacle embedded in a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium in three dimensions. Based on the Helmholtz decomposition, the elastic scattering problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. A novel system of boundary integral equations is formulated and a spectral boundary integral method is developed for the coupled boundary value problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.
This paper concerns an inverse elastic scattering problem which is to determine a rigid obstacle from time domain scattered field data for a single incident plane wave. By using Helmholtz decomposition, we reduce the initial-boundary value problem of the time domain Navier equation to a coupled initial-boundary value problem of wave equations, and prove the uniqueness of the solution for the coupled problem by employing energy method. The retarded single layer potential is introduced to establish the coupled boundary integral equations, and the uniqueness is discussed for the solution of the c…

We obtain regularity results in weighted Sobolev spaces for the solution of the obstacle problem for the integral fractional Laplacian. The weight is a power of the distance to the boundary. These bounds then serve us as a guide in the design and analysis of an optimal finite element scheme over graded meshes.
In this paper, we consider the scattering of a time-dependent electromagnetic wave by an elastic body immersed in the lower half-space of a two-layered background medium which is separated by an unbounded rough surface. By proposing two exact transparent boundary conditions (TBCs) on the artificial planes, we reformulate the unbounded scattering problem into an equivalent initial-boundary value problem in a strip domain with the well-posedness and stability proved using the Laplace transform, variational method and energy method. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is then introduced to truncate t…

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic plane wave by a bounded elastic obstacle which is immersed in a homogeneous acoustic medium. This paper concerns an inverse acoustic-elastic interaction problem, which is to determine the location and shape of the elastic obstacle by using either the phased or phaseless far-field data. By introducing the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equations. The jump relations are studied for the second derivatives of the single-layer potential in order to establish the correspond…
Fast and high-order accurate algorithms for three dimensional elastic scattering are of great importance when modeling physical phenomena in mechanics, seismic imaging, and many other fields of applied science. In this paper, we develop a novel boundary integral formulation for the three dimensional elastic scattering based on the Helmholtz decomposition of elastic fields, which converts the Navier equation to a coupled system consisted of Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. An FFT-accelerated separation of variables solver is proposed to efficiently invert boundary integral formulations of the c…
We analyze the inverse problem to reconstruct the shape of a three dimensional homogeneous dielectric obstacle from the knowledge of noisy far field data. The forward problem is solved by a system of second kind boundary integral equations. For the numerical solution of these coupled integral equations we propose a fast spectral algorithm by transporting these equations onto the unit sphere. We review the differentiability properties of the boundary to far field operator and give a characterization of the adjoint operator of the first Fréchet derivative. Using these results we discuss the impl…
This articles first investigates boundary integral operators for the three-dimensional isotropic linear elasticity of a biphasic model with piecewise constant Lamé coefficients in the form of a bounded domain of arbitrary shape surrounded by a background material. In the simple case of a spherical inclusion, the vector spherical harmonics consist of eigenfunctions of the single and double layer boundary operators and we provide their spectra. Further, in the case of many spherical inclusions with isotropic materials, each with its own set of Lamé parameters, we propose an integral equation and…
An incoming elastodynamic wave impinges on an elastic obstacle is embedded in an infinite elastic medium. The objective of the paper is to examine the subsequent elastic fields scattered by and transmitted into the elastic obstacle. By applying a boundary-field equation method, we are able to formulate a nonlocal boundary problem (NBP) in the Laplace transformed domain, using the field equations inside the obstacle and boundary integral equations in the exterior elastic medium. Existence, uniqueness and stability of the solutions to the NBP are established in Sobolev spaces for two different i…

Inverse problems are more challenging when only partial data are available in general. In this paper, we propose a two-step approach combining the extended sampling method and the ensemble Kalman filter to reconstruct an elastic rigid obstacle using partial data. In the first step, the approximate location of the unknown obstacle is obtained by the extended sampling method. In the second step, the ensemble Kalman filter is employed to reconstruct the shape. The location obtained in the first step guides the construction of the initial particles of the ensemble Kalman filter, which is critical …
We present three high-order Nystrom discretization strategies of various boundary integral equation formulations of the impenetrable time-harmonic Navier equations in two dimensions. One class of such formulations is based on the four classical Boundary Integral Operators (BIOs) associated with the Green's function of the Navier operator. We consider two types of Nystrom discretizations of these operators, one that relies on Kussmaul-Martensen logarithmic splittings and the other on Alpert quadratures. In addition, we consider an alternative formulation of Navier scattering problems based on H…
This paper presents novel methodologies for the numerical simulation of scattering of elastic waves by both closed and open surfaces in three-dimensional space. The proposed approach utilizes new integral formulations as well as an extension to the elastic context of the efficient high-order singular-integration methods~\cite{BG18} introduced recently for the acoustic case. In order to obtain formulations leading to iterative solvers (GMRES) which converge in small numbers of iterations we investigate, theoretically and computationally, the character of the spectra of various operators associa…
This paper introduces a novel boundary integral equation (BIE) method for the numerical solution of problems of planewave scattering by periodic line arrays of two-dimensional penetrable obstacles. Our approach is built upon a direct BIE formulation that leverages the simplicity of the free-space Green function but in turn entails evaluation of integrals over the unit-cell boundaries. Such integrals are here treated via the window Green function method. The windowing approximation together with a finite-rank operator correction -- used to properly impose the Rayleigh radiation condition -- yie…
We study a commonly-used second-kind boundary-integral equation for solving the Helmholtz exterior Neumann problem at high frequency, where, writing $Γ$ for the boundary of the obstacle, the relevant integral operators map $L^2(Γ)$ to itself. We prove new frequency-explicit bounds on the norms of both the integral operator and its inverse. The bounds on the norm are valid for piecewise-smooth $Γ$ and are sharp up to factors of $\log k$ (where $k$ is the wavenumber), and the bounds on the norm of the inverse are valid for smooth $Γ$ and are observed to be sharp at least when $Γ$ is smooth with …
The Calderón formulas (i.e., the combination of single-layer and hyper-singular boundary integral operators) have been widely utilized in the process of constructing valid boundary integral equation systems which could possess highly favorable spectral properties. This work is devoted to studying the theoretical properties of elastodynamic Calderón formulas which provide us with a solid basis for the design of fast boundary integral equation methods solving elastic wave problems defined on a close-surface or an open-surface in two dimensions. For the closed-surface case, it is proved that the …
We consider the numerical algorithm for the two-dimensional time-harmonic elastic wave scattering by unbounded rough surfaces with Dirichlet boundary condition. A Nyström method is proposed for the scattering problem based on the integral equation method. Convergence of the Nyström method is established with convergence rate depending on the smoothness of the rough surfaces. In doing so, a crucial role is played by analyzing the singularities of the kernels of the relevant boundary integral operators. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
