Fast and high-order accurate algorithms for three dimensional elastic scattering are of great importance when modeling physical phenomena in mechanics, seismic imaging, and many other fields of applied science. In this paper, we develop a novel boundary integral formulation for the three dimensional elastic scattering based on the Helmholtz decomposition of elastic fields, which converts the Navier equation to a coupled system consisted of Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. An FFT-accelerated separation of variables solver is proposed to efficiently invert boundary integral formulations of the coupled system for elastic scattering from axisymmetric rigid bodies. In particular, by combining the regularization properties of the singular boundary integral operators and the FFT-based fast evaluation of modal Green's functions, our numerical solver can rapidly solve the resulting integral equations with a high-order accuracy. Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm, including geometries with corners at different wave number.
In this article we consider the linear elasticity problem in an axisymmetric three dimensional domain, with data which are axisymmetric and have zero angular component. The weak formulation of the the three dimensional problem reduces to a two dimensional problem on the meridian domain, involving weighted integrals. The problem is formulated in a mixed method framework with both the stress and displacement treated as unknowns. The symmetry condition for the stress tensor is weakly imposed. Well posedness of the continuous weak formulation and its discretization are shown. Two approximation spa…
We consider the application of the WaveHoltz iteration to time-harmonic elastic wave equations with energy conserving boundary conditions. The original WaveHoltz iteration for acoustic Helmholtz problems is a fixed-point iteration that filters the solution of the wave equation with time-harmonic forcing and boundary data. As in the original WaveHoltz method, we reformulate the fixed point iteration as a positive definite linear system of equations that is iteratively solved by a Krylov method. We present two time-stepping schemes, one explicit and one (novel) implicit, which completely remove …

The form and evolution of multi-phase biomembranes is of fundamental importance in order to understand living systems. In order to describe these membranes, we consider a mathematical model based on a Canham--Helfrich--Evans two-phase elastic energy, which will lead to fourth order geometric evolution problems involving highly nonlinear boundary conditions. We develop a parametric finite element method in an axisymmetric setting. Using a variational approach, it is possible to derive weak formulations for the highly nonlinear boundary value problems such that energy decay laws, as well as cons…
We present three high-order Nystrom discretization strategies of various boundary integral equation formulations of the impenetrable time-harmonic Navier equations in two dimensions. One class of such formulations is based on the four classical Boundary Integral Operators (BIOs) associated with the Green's function of the Navier operator. We consider two types of Nystrom discretizations of these operators, one that relies on Kussmaul-Martensen logarithmic splittings and the other on Alpert quadratures. In addition, we consider an alternative formulation of Navier scattering problems based on H…
The goal of this work is to present a fast and viable approach for the numerical solution of the high-contrast state problems arising in topology optimization. The optimization process is iterative, and the gradients are obtained by an adjoint analysis, which requires the numerical solution of large high-contrast linear elastic problems with features spanning several length scales. The size of the discretized problems forces the utilization of iterative linear solvers with solution time dependant on the quality of the preconditioner. The lack of clear separation between the scales, as well as …
Current multi-physics Finite Element Method (FEM) solvers are complex systems in terms of both their mathematical complexity and lines of code. This paper proposes a skeleton generic FEM solver, named MetaFEM, in total about 5,000 lines of Julia code, which translates generic input Partial Differential Equation (PDE) weak forms into corresponding GPU-accelerated simulations with a grammar similar to FEniCS or FreeFEM. Two novel approaches differentiate MetaFEM from the common solvers: (1) the FEM kernel is based on an original theory/algorithm which explicitly processes meta-expressions, as th…
