MnBi2Te4(MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator that combines a topologically non-trivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. We perform inelastic neutron scattering (INS) on co-aligned single crystals to study the magnetic interactions in MBT. Consistent with previous work, we find that the AF interlayer exchange coupling and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have comparable strength, which supports metamagnetic transitions that allow access to different magnetic symmetries in applied fields. Modelling of the two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires the introduction of long-range and competing Heisenberg FM and AF interactions, up to at least the seventh nearest-neighbor, and possess anomalous damping, especially near the Brillouin zone boundary. First-principles calculations of insulating MBT find that both interlayer and intralayer magnetic interactions are long-ranged. We discuss the potential roles that bulk $n$-type charger carriers and chemical disorder play in the magnetism of MBT.
A thermodynamic and transport study of Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field are presented. The central results include a growing specific heat C with increasing field B, a divergent magnetic contribution to C/T at low temperatures, an abrupt jump and a peak in C/T at 2.90 T and 7 T for B||ab-plane and B||c-axis, respectively, and corresponding changes in the low T power laws of the resistivity. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that the quantum fluctuations occur in a system that shows both intralayer metamagnetism and interlayer spontaneous ferromagnetism, a featu…
Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis, respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.
The theory of impurities in excitonic insulator is investigated in the light of the recent experiments on hexaborides. First, we study the bound state around the impurity and find that the bound state emerges when ${Re}Δ$ is positive. Second, we study the continuum state using Abrikosov-Gor'kov's approach. We find that the energy gap is reduced strongly when ${Im}Δ=0$. Finally, we solve Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for excitonic insulator numerically. We get the results consistent with the analytic ones. We also find that incomplete ferromagnetism appears in doped triplet excitonic insulator…
The effect of binary alloy disorder on the ferromagnetic phases of f-electron materials is studied within the periodic Anderson model. We find that disorder in the conduction band can drastically enhance the Curie temperature due to an increase of the local f-moment. The effect may be explained qualitatively and even quantitatively by a simple theoretical ansatz. The emergence of an alloy Kondo insulator at non-integer filling is also pointed out.
We propose the notion of spin-selective Kondo insulator, which provides a fundamental mechanism to describe the ferromagnetic phase of the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling. This unveils a remarkable feature of the ferromagnetic metallic phase: the majority-spin conduction electrons show metallic- while the minority-spin electrons show insulating-behavior. The resulting Kondo gap in the minority spin sector, which is due to the cooperation of ferromagnetism and partial Kondo screening, evidences a dynamically-induced commensurability for a combination of minority-spin electro…
We study the effects of electron doping in Mott insulators containing d^4 ions such as Ru4+, Os4+, Rh5+, and Ir5+ with J=0 singlet ground state. Depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, the undoped systems are either nonmagnetic or host an unusual, excitonic magnetism arising from a condensation of the excited J=1 triplet states of t_2g^4. We find that the interaction between J-excitons and doped carriers strongly supports ferromagnetism, converting both the nonmagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the parent insulator into a ferromagnetic metal, and further to a nonmagnetic me…
We analyse the low-energy physics of nearly ferromagnetic metals in two spatial dimensions using the functional renormalization group technique. We find a new low-energy fixed point, at which the fermionic (electron-like) excitations are non-Fermi-liquid ($z_f = 13/10$) and the magnetic fluctuations exhibit an anomalous Landau damping whose rate vanishes as $Γ_{\bf q} \sim \vert {\bf q} \vert^{3/5}$ in the low-$\vert {\bf q} \vert$ limit. We discuss this renormalization of the Landau-damping exponent, which is the major novel prediction of our work, and highlight the possible link between that…
In this paper, based on the mean field approach and random-phase-approximation, we study the magnetic properties of the spinful Haldane model on honeycomb lattice of topological flat band with on-site repulsive Coulomb interaction. We find that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is more stable than ferromagnetic (FM) order at (or near) half-filling; while away from half-filling the phase diagram becomes complex: At large doping, FM order is more stable than AF order due to the flatness of band structure. In particular, we find that at quarter filling case, the system becomes a Q=1$ topological i…
Based on recent experimental evidence for a spin polarized ground state in the insulating phase of the two-dimensional electron system, we propose that ferromagnetic spin fluctuations lead to an attractive interaction in the triplet channel and cause p-wave pairing in the conducting phase. We use the Landau Fermi liquid phenomenology to explain how the enhanced spin susceptibility near the critical density yields an attractive potential, in a similar mechanism to superfluidity in $^3$He. As the density is decreased, the p-wave order parameter undergoes a transition from a unitary to a nonunita…
To investigate ferromagnetic semiconductors and insulators, such as the famous EuO, EuS, or CrBr$_3$, we propose a hybridized Kondo-lattice model, where, in addition to the conduction electrons, localized moments (e.g., the $4f$-electrons) are modeled as a strongly correlated band system. The quasi-empty conduction band is weakly filled due to the hybridization term. This activates the intraatomic exchange coupling between conduction and localized electrons. Temperature-dependent phase diagrams and quasiparticle densities of states are presented for various coupling and hybridization strengths…
A detailed study of the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in the one-band Hubbard model in the presence of binary alloy disorder is presented. The influence of the disorder (with concentration $x$ and $1-x$ of the two alloy ions) on the Curie temperature $T_{c}$ is found to depend strongly on electron density $n$. While at high densities, $n>x$, the disorder always reduces $T_c$, at low densities, $n<x$, the disorder can even \emph{enhance} $T_c$ if the interaction is strong enough. At the particular density $n=x$ (i. e. not necessarily at half filling) the interplay between disor…
We study the effects of opening of the band gap on the double exchange ferromagnetism. Applying the density-matrix renormalization group method and an analytical expansion from the dimer limit to the one-dimensional double exchange model, we demonstrate for a relevant region of the exchange coupling that, in the weak dimerization regime, the Peierls gap opens in the fully spin-polarized conduction band without affecting its ferromagnetism, whereas in the strong dimerization regime, the ferromagnetism is destroyed and the Mott gap opens instead, leading the system to the antiferromagnetic quasi…
We present a theory of competing ferromagnetic and superconducting orders in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). In our theory, ferromagnetism is induced by Coulomb repulsion, while superconductivity with intervalley equal-spin pairing can be mediated by electron-acoustic phonon interactions. We calculate the transition temperatures for ferromagnetism and superconductivity as a function of moiré band filling factor, and find that superconducting domes can appear on both the electron and hole sides of the ferromagnetic insulator at half filling. We show that the ferromagnetic insulating gap…
Using the constrained-path Monte Carlo method, we studied the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model for electron fillings between 1/4 and 1/2. We also derived two effective low energy theories to assist in interpreting the numerical results. For 1/4 filling we found that the system can be a Mott or a charge transfer insulator, depending on the relative values of the Coulomb interaction and the charge transfer gap between the two non-interacting bands. The insulator may be a paramagnet or antiferromagnet. We concentrated on the effect of electron doping on these ins…
Motivated by the recent observation of evidences of ferromagnetism in correlated insulating states in systems with Moiré superlattices, we study a two-orbital quantum antiferromagnetic model on the triangular lattice, where the two orbitals physically correspond to the two valleys of the original graphene sheet. For simplicity this model has a SU(2)$^s$$\otimes$SU(2)$^v$ symmetry, where the two SU(2) symmetries correspond to the rotation within the spin and valley space respectively. Through analytical argument, Schwinger boson analysis and also DMRG simulation, we find that even though all th…
The electronic and magnetic properties of cobalt-based layered oxypnictides, LaCoOX (X = P, As), are investigated. LaCoOP and LaCoOAs show metallic type conduction, and the Fermi edge is observed by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ferromagnetic transitions occur at 43 K for LaCoOP and 66 K for LaCoOAs. Above the transition temperatures, temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is observed at the Co L2,3-edge, but not at the other edges. The calculated electronic structure shows a spin polarized ground sta…
Using a slave boson representation of multi-band Hubbard models, we investigate a two-band model relevant to layered perovskites in the vicinity of half-filling. Beside the strong influence of the Hund's rule coupling, we obtain that the phase diagram separates into two regions: a weak to moderate coupling region where the effective mass is weakly renormalized, and a strong coupling regime where it is strongly renormalized. The transition between these two regimes is very sharp. It takes place in a (vanishingly) small domain. A ferromagnetic instability in only found in the strongly correlated…
In this paper we present the microscopic origin of the ferromagnetism of Fe0.25TaS2 and its finite-temperature magnetic properties. We first obtain the band structures of Fe0.25TaS2 by the first-principles calculations and find that both conventional and Dirac carriers coexist in metallic Fe0.25TaS2. Accordingly, considering the spin-orbit coupling of Fe 3d ion, we derive an effective RKKY-type Hamiltonian between Fe spins in the presence of both the conventional parabolic-dispersion and the Dirac linear-dispersion carriers, which contains a Heisenberg-like, an Ising-like and an XY-like term. …
Bulk samples of La2.3-xYxCa0.7Mn2O7, x=0,0.3,0.5, with layered perovskite structure have been synthesized and investigated with respect to their electrical, electronic and magnetic properties. It is found that La1.8Y0.5Ca0.7Mn2O7 has tetragonal structure and is a metallic ferromagnet with a magnetic transition temperature of 170 K. The compound shows metallic behavior below 140 K and has a large magnetoresistance (MR) Delta-rho/rho(0)~94% at 100 K at 34 kOe. For x=0 and 0.3 the structure is monoclinic with a suppression of metallicity. For x=0 the material is an ferromagnetic insulator. We obs…
We propose a new mechanism for quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in the AB stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ system. Based on the observation that the inter-layer tunneling is suppressed in the AB stacking, we consider a model with two layers coupled through the Coulomb interaction. The moiré lattices of the two layers are shifted to form a honeycomb lattice together. Initially, the system is in a layer-polarized Mott insulator at $ν_T=1$. But with a displacement field, an equal number of holes and electrons are doped into the two layers respectively and they form inter-layer exciton condensation. Th…
Results are presented of single crystal structural, thermodynamic, and reflectivity measurements of the double-perovskite Ba2NaOsO6. These characterize the material as a 5d^1 ferromagnetic Mott insulator with an ordered moment of ~0.2 Bohr magnetons per formula unit and TC = 6.8(3) K. The magnetic entropy associated with this phase transition is close to Rln2, indicating that the quartet groundstate anticipated from consideration of the crystal structure is split, consistent with a scenario in which the ferromagnetism is associated with orbital ordering.
Understanding the coexistence of ferromagnetism and insulating behavior in manganites is an unsolved problem. We propose a localized-band model involving effective intermediate-range electron-electron (electron-hole) repulsion (attraction) generated by cooperative electron-phonon interaction. Double exchange mechanism, involving holes virtually hopping to nearest neighbors and back, produces magnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic environment; when these magnetic polarons coalesce and percolate the system, we get a ferromagnetic insulator. Ferromagnetism gets more pronounced when the holes (…
Doped divalent hexaborides such as $Sr_{1-x}La_xB_6$ exhibit high \tc ferromagnetism. We isolate a degenerate pair of $2p$-orbitals of boron with two valence electrons, invoke electron correlation and Hund coupling, to suggest that the undoped state is better viewed as a spin-1 Mott insulator; it is predicted to be a type of 3d Haldane gap phase with a spin gap $\sim 0.1 eV$, much smaller than the charge gap of $ > 1.0 eV$ seen in ARPES. The experimentally seen high \tc `ferromagnetism' is argued to be a complex magnetic order in disguise - either a canted 6-sublattice AFM ($\approx 120^0$) or…
A slave boson representation for the degenerate Hubbard model is introduced. The location of the metal to insulator transition that occurs at commensurate densities is shown to depend weakly on the band degeneracy M. The relative weights of the Hubbard sub-bands depend strongly on M, as well as the magnetic properties. It is also shown that a sizable Hund's rule coupling is required in order to have a ferromagnetic instability appearing. The metal to insulator transition driven by an increase in temperature is a strong function of it.
The ferromagnetic semiconductor Ba2NiOsO6 (Tmag ~100 K) was synthesized at 6 GPa and 1500 °C. It crystallizes into a double perovskite structure [Fm-3m; a = 8.0428(1) Å], where the Ni2+ and Os6+ ions are perfectly ordered at the perovskite B-site. We show that the spin-orbit coupling of Os6+ plays an essential role in opening the charge gap. The magnetic state was investigated by density functional theory calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The latter revealed a collinear ferromagnetic order in a >21 kOe magnetic field at 5 K. The ferromagnetic gapped state is fundamentally different …
We perform ab-initio calculations on Bi$_\mathrm{Se}$ antisite defects in the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, finding strong low-energy defect resonances with a spontaneous ferromagnetism, fixed to an out-of-plane orientation due to an exceptional large magnetic anisotropy energy. For antisite defects in the surface layer, we find semi-itinerant ferromagnetism and strong hybridization with the Dirac surface state, generating a finite energy gap. For deeper lying defects, such hybridization is largely absent, the magnetic moments becomes more localized, and no energy gap is present.
A complex interplay of different energy scales involving Coulomb repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling energy in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) material produces novel emerging physical state. For instance, ferromagnetism in vdW charge transfer insulator CrGeTe$_3$, that provides a promising platform to simultaneously manipulate the magnetic and electrical properties for potential device implementation using few layers thick materials. Here, we show a continuous tuning of magnetic and electrical properties of CrGeTe$_3$ single crystal using pressure. With application of …
Detailed measurements of the magnetic and transport properties of the two La1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.18, x = 0.20) single crystals straddling the compositional metal-insulator transition boundary (0.18 < xc < 0.22) are summarized. The analysis of magnetization/susceptibility data reveals the occurrence of a second order/continuous ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition described not only by nearest neighbour, 3-D Heisenberg model exponents (gamma = 1.387, beta = 0.365, delta = 4.783), but also with comparable values of the critical amplitudes in both the insulating and the metallic samples. Thes…
Strained Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO $_3$ trilayers were grown on (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The coupling at the interfaces of several trilayers has been investigated from magnetization and electronic transport experiments. An increase of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ layer thickness induces a magnetic ordering in the strain layers and at the interfaces leading to ferromagnetic behavior and enhanced coercivity, while resistivity shows metal-like behaviors. These effects are not observed in the parent…
We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the layered Ruddelsden Popper series of strontium iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1. Tight-binding models of t2g orbitals for n = 1, 2, and infinity are constructed, and changes in band dispersion due to dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling are presented. Identifying the states near the Fermi level to be predominantly Jeff = 1/2, we use an effective Hubbard model to study the effect of correlations. Transitions from a metallic state to various magnetically ordered states at different critical interactions are obtained. A canted antiferromagnetic insulato…

Electrons in moiré flat band systems can spontaneously break time reversal symmetry, giving rise to a quantized anomalous Hall effect. Here we use a superconducting quantum interference device to image stray magnetic fields in one such system composed of twisted bilayer graphene aligned to hexagonal boron nitride. We find a magnetization of several Bohr magnetons per charge carrier, demonstrating that the magnetism is primarily orbital in nature. Our measurements reveal a large change in the magnetization as the chemical potential is swept across the quantum anomalous Hall gap consistent with …
The recently investigated $1T$-polymorph of monolayer NbSe$_2$ revealed an insulating behaviour suggesting a star-of-David phase with $\sqrt{13}\,\times\sqrt{13}$ periodicity associated with a Mott insulator, reminiscent of $1T$-TaS$_2$. In this work, we examine this novel two-dimensional material from first principles. We find an instability towards the formation of an incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) and establish the star-of-David phase as the most stable commensurate CDW. The mottness in the star-of-David phase is confirmed and studied at various levels of theory: the spin-polarize…
We observe interfacial ferromagnetism in superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO3. LaNiO3 exhibits a thickness dependent metal-insulator transition and we find the emergence of ferromagnetism to be coincident with the conducting state of LaNiO3. That is, only superlattices in which the LaNiO3 layers are metallic exhibit ferromagnetism. Using several magnetic probes, we have determined that the ferromagnetism arises in a single unit cell of CaMnO3 at the interface. Together these results suggest that ferromagnetism can be attributed to a double e…
Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is a well known 3D-topological insulators(TI) with a non-trivial Berry phase of $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ attributed to the topology of the band structure. The Berry phase shows non-topological deviations from $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ in presence of a perturbation that destroys time reversal symmetry and gives rise to a quantum system with massive Dirac fermions and finite band gap. Such a band gap opening is achieved on account of the exchange field of a ferromagnet or the intrinsic energy gap of a superconductor that influences the topological insulator surface states by virtue of …
Although the precise mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in the layered cuprates remains unknown, it is generally thought that strong 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnetism combined with disruptive hole doping is an essential aspect of the phenomenon. Intensive studies of other layered 3d transition metal systems have greatly extended our understanding of strongly correlated electron states, but to date have failed to show strong 2D antiferromagnetism or high-Tc superconductivity. For this reason the largely unexplored 4d^9 Ag^II fluorides, which are structurally and perhaps magnetically similar …
The possibility of the strong electron-electron interaction driven insulating phase from the metallic phase in two-dimensions has been suggested for clean systems without intentional disorder, but its rigorous demonstration is still lacking. Here, we examine the finite-temperature transport behavior of a few layered-MoS$_2$ material in the vicinity of the density-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT), revealing previously overlooked universal features characteristic of strongly correlated electron systems. Our scaling analysis, based on the Wigner-Mott theoretical viewpoint, conclusively dem…
Magnetic insulators are often antiferromagnetic (AFM) and layered AFM compounds usually show low ordering temperature. On the other hand, layered ferromagnetic (FM) insulators with high-TC are very rare although they could be quite useful for spintronic applications. Here, using crystal field level analysis in combination with density functional theory calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we predict that the layered insulator Sr2NiRuO4 would have a strong FM coupling with TC as high as 240 K. The tetragonal crystal field in the Ni-O-Ru square plane stabilizes the S=1/2 Ni+ and S=3/…
We report the discovery of weak topological insulators by ab initio calculations in a honeycomb lattice. We propose a structure with an odd number of layers in the primitive unit-cell as a prerequisite for forming weak topological insulators. Here, the single-layered KHgSb is the most suitable candidate for its large bulk energy gap of 0.24 eV. Its side surface hosts metallic surface states, forming two anisotropic Dirac cones. Though the stacking of even-layered structures leads to trivial insulators, the structures can host a quantum spin Hall layer with a large bulk gap, if an additional si…
The quasistatic approximation and equation-of-motion decoupling for the electron Green's functions are applied to trace the effect of electronic dispersion and electron correlations on the ferromagnetism of two-dimensional itinerant-electron systems. It is found that next-nearest-neighbor hopping t' is of crucial importance for ferromagnetism formation yielding the magnetic phase diagram which is strongly asymmetric with respect to half-filling. At small t' in the vicinity of half-filling the ferromagnetic phase region is restricted by the spin-density wave instability, and far from half-filli…
The development of ferromagnetism in Mn-doped Bi2Te3 is characterized through measurements on a series of single crystals with different Mn content. Scanning tunneling microscopy analysis shows that the Mn substitutes on the Bi sites, forming compounds of the type Bi2-xMnxTe3, and that the Mn substitutions are randomly distributed, not clustered. Mn doping first gives rise to local magnetic moments with Curie-like behavior, but by the compositions Bi1.96Mn0.04Te3 and Bi1.91Mn0.09Te3 a second order ferromagnetic transition is observed, with Tc ~ 9-12 K. The easy axis of magnetization in the fer…
We critically investigate the model of a doped excitonic insulator, which recently has been invoked to explain some experimental properties of the ferromagnetic state in Ca_{1-x}La_xB_6. We demonstrate that the ground state of this model is intrinsically unstable towards the appearance of a superstructure. In addition, the model would lead to a phase separation regime and the domain structure which may be prevented by the Coulomb forces only. Recent experiments indicate that a superstructure may indeed show up in this material.
Three low-valence layered nickelates with general formula La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ ($δ$=0.0, 0.5, 1) are studied by ab initio techniques. Both the insulating and metallic limits are analyzed, together with the compound at the Mott transition ($δ$= 0.5; Ni$^{2+}$), that shows insulating behavior, with all Ni atoms in a S=1 high-spin state. The compound in the $δ$= 1 limit (La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$), with mean formal valence Ni$^{1.5+}$ and hence nominally metallic, nevertheless shows a correlated {\it molecular} insulating state, produced by the quantum confinement of the NiO$_2$ bilayers and the presenc…
We report here a discovery of electrically driven insulator to metal transition (IMT) and concomitant isostructural volume expansion in the layered cobaltates which otherwise do not exhibit temperature dependent IMT. These findings are demonstrated at macroscopic, microscopic and atomic scales. With application of voltage growth of metallic regions have been observed in the 2D layered La2-xSrxCoO4. Growth of metallic regions is associated with volume increase (strain as high as 0.3%). Non thermal IMT and electro-strain are proposed to be caused by electro-proliferation of the Co3+ high spin st…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a topological Hubbard model within a bosonization formalism and, in particular, determine the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider a square lattice Hubbard model at 1/4-filling whose free-electron term is the π-flux model with topologically nontrivial and nearly flat energy bands. The electron spin is introduced such that the model either explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band Chern insulator) or is invariant under time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band $Z_2$ topological insulator). We generalize for flat-band Ch…
Spin-based electronics in topological insulators (TIs) is favored by the long spin coherence1,2 and consequently fault-tolerant information storage. Magnetically doped TIs are ferromagnetic up to 13 K,3 well below any practical operating condition. Here we demonstrate that the long range ferromagnetism at ambient temperature can be induced in Bi2-xMnxTe3 by the magnetic proximity effect through deposited Fe overlayer. This result opens a new path to interface-controlled ferromagnetism in TI-based spintronic devices.
Understanding, creating, and manipulating spin polarization of two-dimensional electron gases at complex oxide interfaces presents an experimental challenge. For example, despite almost a decade long research effort, the microscopic origin of ferromagnetism in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterojunction is still an open question. Here, by using a prototypical two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) which emerges at the interface between band insulator SrTiO3 and antiferromagnetic Mott insulator LaTiO3 , the experiment reveals the evidence for magnetic phase separation in hole-doped Ti d1 t2g system resulting in …
The ferromagnetic topological insulator V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ has been recently reported as a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) system. Yet the microscopic origins of the QAH effect and the ferromagnetism remain unclear. One key aspect is the contribution of the V atoms to the electronic structure. Here the valence band of V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films was probed in an element-specific way by resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The signature of the V $3d$ impurity band was extracted, and exhibits a high density of states near Fermi level. First-principles calculations support the experimental resul…
We study the effect of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by employing the density-matrix renormalization group method. A ferromagnetic long-range order emerges in both Mott insulator and superfluid phases resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry, when the spin-orbit coupling term becomes comparable to the hopping kinetic energy and the inter-component interaction is smaller than the intra-one as well. This novel effect is expected to be detectable with the present realization of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in exp…
Sr2IrO4 exhibits a novel insulating state driven by spin-orbit interactions. We report two novel phenomena, namely a large magnetoresistivity in Sr2IrO4 that is extremely sensitive to the orientation of magnetic field but exhibits no apparent correlation with the magnetization, and a robust metallic state that is induced by dilute electron (La3+) or hole (K+) doping for Sr2+ ions in Sr2IrO4. Our structural, transport and magnetic data reveal that a strong spin-orbit interaction alters the balance between the competing energies so profoundly that (1) the spin degree of freedom alone is no longe…
The layered perovskite Ca2RuO4 is a spin-one Mott insulator at ambient pressure and exhibits metallic ferromagnetism at least up to ~ 80 kbar with a maximum Curie temperature of 28 K. Above ~ 90 kbar and up to 140 kbar, the highest pressure reached, the resistivity and ac susceptibility show pronounced downturns below ~ 0.4 K in applied magnetic fields of up to ~10 mT. This indicates that our specimens of Ca2RuO4 are weakly superconducting on the border of a quasi-2D ferromagnetic state.
