The effect of binary alloy disorder on the ferromagnetic phases of f-electron materials is studied within the periodic Anderson model. We find that disorder in the conduction band can drastically enhance the Curie temperature due to an increase of the local f-moment. The effect may be explained qualitatively and even quantitatively by a simple theoretical ansatz. The emergence of an alloy Kondo insulator at non-integer filling is also pointed out.
We carefully consider the interplay between ferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect in the conventional Kondo lattice systems at finite temperatures. Within an effective mean-field theory for small conduction electron densities, a complete phase diagram has been determined. In the ferromagnetic ordered phase, there is a characteristic temperature scale to indicate the presence of the Kondo screening effect. We further find two distinct ferromagnetic long-range ordered phases coexisting with the Kondo screening effect: spin fully polarized and partially polarized states. A continuous phas…
We propose the notion of spin-selective Kondo insulator, which provides a fundamental mechanism to describe the ferromagnetic phase of the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling. This unveils a remarkable feature of the ferromagnetic metallic phase: the majority-spin conduction electrons show metallic- while the minority-spin electrons show insulating-behavior. The resulting Kondo gap in the minority spin sector, which is due to the cooperation of ferromagnetism and partial Kondo screening, evidences a dynamically-induced commensurability for a combination of minority-spin electro…
Ground state ferromagnetism of the Kondo lattices is investigated within slave fermion approach by Coleman and Andrei within a mean-field approximation in the effective hybridization model. Conditions for formation of both saturated (half-metallic) and non-saturated magnetic state are obtained for various lattices. A description in terms of universal functions which depend only on bare electron density of states (DOS) is presented. A crucial role of the energy dependence of the bare DOS (especially, of DOS peaks) for the small-moment ferromagnetism formation is demonstrated.
We report on a comprehensive optical, transport and thermodynamic study of the Zintl compound Yb$_{14}$MnSb$_{11}$, demonstrating that it is the first ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound in the underscreened limit. We propose a scenerio whereby the combination of Kondo and Jahn-Teller effects provides a consistent explanation of both transport and optical data.
It is becoming widely recognized that, contrary to earlier expectations, the usual one-band Hubbard model does not give an explanation for itinerant ferromagnetism. After reviewing the status of magnetic ordering in the one-band model, we discuss the possibility of ferromagnetism in some recently introduced two-band Hubbard models, and in generalized Anderson lattices. It is argued that these two classes of models are closely related and that it is their common feature that the ferromagnetic phase has to compete with a collective Kondo state.
Coexistence between ferromagnetic order and Kondo behavior has been observed in some uranium compounds. The underscreened Kondo lattice model can provide a possible description of this coexistence. Here we present a model of a lattice of S=1 spins coupled to the conduction electrons through an intra-site exchange interaction $J_{K}$ and an inter-site ferromagnetic exchange $f-f$ interaction $J_{H}$. Finite temperature results show that the Kondo temperature is larger than the Curie ordering temperature, $T_{C}$, providing a possible scenario for the coexistence of Kondo effect and magnetic ord…
We propose a modified RKKY-technique to evaluate the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model. Together with a previously developed selfenergy approach to the conduction electron part of the model we get a closed system of equations which can be solved self-consistently. Ferromagnetism appears for relatively low electron (hole) densities, while it is excluded around half-filling ($n=1$). For small $J$ conventional RKKY ($\sim J^2$) is reproduced; however, with strong deviations already for very moderate exchange couplings. For not too small $n$ a critical $J_c$ is needed to…
It is shown that the Kondo lattice model, for any finite coupling constant J, can be obtained exactly from the periodic Anderson model in an appropriate limit. The mapping allows a direct proof of the 'large' Fermi volume for a nonmagnetic Fermi-liquid state of the Kondo lattice model.
We argue that the Anderson and Kondo models turn out to be irrelevant for the description of some strongly correlated electron systems and we suggest the mechanism for the formation of many-body states (heavy fermions) being an alternative to the Kondo one. This mechanism involves the quantum tunneling of a heavy particle between the states in the double-well potential.
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, we study metallic ferromagnetism in a one-dimensional copper-oxide model which contains one oxygen p-orbital and one copper d-orbital. The parameters for the d-p model can be chosen so that it is similar to the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model. For these parameters, we compare the ground-state phase diagram with that of the Anderson model and find a ferromagnetic region analogous to one found in the Anderson model, but which is pushed to somewhat higher densities and interaction strengths. In both models, we find a region within the ferrom…
The method of continuous unitary transformations (CUTs) is applied to the Anderson impurity and the Kondo model aiming at the systematic derivation of convergent effective models. If CUTs are applied in a conventional way, diverging differential equations occur. Similar to poor man's scaling the energy scale, below which the couplings diverge, corresponds to the Kondo temperature $T_K$. We present a way to apply CUTs to the Kondo and to the Anderson impurity model so that no divergences occur but a converged effective low-energy model is derived with small fnite parameters at arbitrarily small…
We determine exactly the ground state of the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model (PAM) in the strong hybridization regime. In this regime, the low energy sector of the PAM maps into an effective Hamiltonian that has a ferromagnetic ground state for any electron density between half and three quarters filling. This rigorous result proves the existence of a new magnetic state that was excluded in the previous analysis of the mixed valence systems.
The periodic Anderson model is extended by switching on a Hubbard U for the conduction electrons. We use the Gutzwiller variational method to study the nearly integral valent limit. The lattice Kondo energy contains the U-dependent chemical potential of the Hubbard subsystem in the exponent, and the correlation-induced band narrowing in the prefactor. Both effects tend to suppress the Kondo scale, which can be understood to result from the blocking of hybridization. At half-filling, we find a Brinkman-Rice-type transition from a Kondo insulator to a Mott insulator.
The magnetic properties of the two-channel periodic Anderson model for uranium ions, comprised of a quadrupolar and a magnetic doublet are investigated through the crossover from the mixed-valent to the stable moment regime using dynamical mean field theory. In the mixed-valent regime ferromagnetism is found for low carrier concentration on a hyper-cubic lattice. The Kondo regime is governed by band magnetism with small effective moments and an ordering vector $\q$ close to the perfect nesting vector. In the stable moment regime nearest neighbour anti-ferromagnetism dominates for less than hal…
We show within the slave boson technique, that the Anderson lattice model exhibits a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) where the hybridization goes to zero at zero temper- ature. At this fixed point, the f-electrons experience as well a selective Mott transition separating a local-moment phase from a Kondo-screened phase. The presence of a multi-scale QCP in the An- derson lattice in the absence of magnetism is discussed in the context of heavy fermion compounds. This study is the first evidence for a selective Mott transition in the Anderson lattice.
We demonstrate the existence of ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) at conduction-band filling near a quarter. We show that this ferromagnetism is not supported by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions but is instead driven by the precursors of charge density wave (CDW) formation in the conduction electron band. To study the effect of spatial correlations, we compare Dynamical Mean field Approximation (DMFA) and Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) results. We find that both RKKY and CDW driven ferromagnetism persist as short-range correlations are incorporated int…
We introduce a new aproximation scheme for the periodic Anderson model (PAM). The modified alloy approximation represents an optimum alloy approximation for the strong coupling limit, which can be solved within the CPA-formalism. Zero-temperature and finite-temperature phase diagrams are presented for the PAM in the intermediate-valence regime. The diversity of magnetic properties accessible by variation of the system parameters can be studied by means of quasiparticle densities of states: The conduction band couples either ferro- or antiferromagneticaly to the f-levels. A finite hybridization…
The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent …
We compare different approximation schemes for investigating ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model. The use of several approximations allows for a detailed analysis of the implications of the respective methods, and also of the mechanisms driving the ferromagnetic transition. For the Kondo limit, our results confirm a previously proposed mechanism leading to ferromagnetic order, namely an RKKY exchange mediated via the formation of Kondo screening clouds in the conduction band. The contrary case is found in the intermediate-valence regime. Here, the bandshift correction ensuring a corr…
Metallic magnetism is both ancient and modern, occurring in such familiar settings as the lodestone in compass needles and the hard drive in computers. Surprisingly, a rigorous theoretical basis for metallic ferromagnetism is still largely missing. The Stoner approach perturbatively treates Coulomb interactions when the latter need to be large, while the Nagaoka approach incorporates thermodynamically negligible electrons into a half-filled band. Here, we show that the ferromagnetic order of the Kondo lattice is amenable to an asymptotically exact analysis over a range of interaction parameter…
We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, based on a simple two-band model. The model includes an uncorrelated and dispersive band hybridized with a second band which is narrow and correlated. The simplest Hamiltonian containing these ingredients is the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). Using quantum Monte Carlo and analytical methods, we show that the PAM and an extension of it contain the new mechanism and exhibit a non-saturated ferromagnetic ground state in the intermediate valence regime. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra atomic Hund's coupling,…
The low-temperature behavior of the asymmetric single-impurity Anderson model is studied by diagrammatic methods resulting in analytically controllable approximations. We first discuss the ways one can simplify parquet equations in critical regions of singularities in the two-particle vertex. The scale vanishing at the critical point defines the Kondo temperature at which the electron-hole correlation function saturates. We show that the Kondo temperature exists at any filling of the impurity level. A quasiparticle resonance peak in the spectral function, however, forms only in almost electron…
We study ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model with and without a magnetic field by the Gutzwiller theory. We find three ferromagnetic phases: a weak ferromagnetic phase (FM0), a half-metallic phase without Fermi surface for the majority spin (FM1), and a ferromagnetic phase with almost completely polarized f-electrons (FM2). The Fermi surface changes from the large Fermi-surface in the paramagnetic state to the small Fermi-surface in FM2. We also find that the transitions between the ferromagnetic phases can be second-order phase transitions in spite of the absence of symmetry breakin…
A magnetic moment in a metal or in a quantum dot is, at low temperatures, screened by the conduction electrons through the mechanism of the Kondo effect. This gives rise to spin-spin correlations between the magnetic moment and the conduction electrons, which can have a substantial spatial extension. We study this phenomenon, the so-called Kondo cloud, by means of the density matrix renormalization group method for the case of the single-impurity Anderson model. We focus on the question whether the Kondo screening length, typically assumed to be proportional to the inverse Kondo temperature, c…
We study a localized spin coupled to an Anderson impurity to model the situation found in higher transition metal or rare earth compounds like e.g.\ LaMnO$_3$ or Gd monopnictides. We find that, even for large quantum numbers of the localized spin, quantum fluctuations play an essential role for the case of ferromagnetic coupling between the spin and the impurity levels. For antiferromagnetic coupling, a description in terms of a classical spin is appropriate.
Using the constrained-path Monte Carlo method, we studied the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model for electron fillings between 1/4 and 1/2. We also derived two effective low energy theories to assist in interpreting the numerical results. For 1/4 filling we found that the system can be a Mott or a charge transfer insulator, depending on the relative values of the Coulomb interaction and the charge transfer gap between the two non-interacting bands. The insulator may be a paramagnet or antiferromagnet. We concentrated on the effect of electron doping on these ins…

Metallic quantum criticality often develops in strongly correlated systems with local effective degrees of freedom. In this work, we consider an Anderson lattice model with SU(2) symmetry. The model is treated by the extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT) in combination with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate a continuous quantum phase transition, establish the ensuing quantum critical point to be of a Kondo-destruction type, and determine the anomalous scaling properties. We connect the continuous nature of the transition to a dynamical Kondo effect, which we c…
We investigate the paramagnetic periodic Anderson model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory which interpolates between the weak and strong coupling limits. For the symmetric PAM, the ground state is always a singlet state. However, as function of the hybridization strength, a crossover from collective to local Kondo screening is found. Reducing the number of conduction electrons, the local Kondo singlets remain stable. The unpaired f-electrons dominate the physics of the system. For very low conduction electron densities, a large increase …
The variational cluster approach (VCA) based on the self-energy functional theory is applied to the two-dimensional symmetric periodic Anderson model at half filling. We calculate a variety of physical quantities including the staggered moments and single-particle spectra at zero temperature to show that the symmetry breaking due to antiferromagnetic ordering occurs in the strong coupling region, whereas in the weak coupling region, the Kondo insulating state without symmetry breaking is realized. The critical interaction strength is estimated. We thus demonstrate that the phase transition due…
Unconventional quantum criticality in heavy-fermion systems has been extensively analyzed in terms of a critical destruction of the Kondo effect. Motivated by a recent demonstration of quantum criticality in a mixed-valent heavy-fermion system, β-YbAlB4, we study a particle-hole-asymmetric Anderson impurity model with a pseudogapped density of states. We demonstrate Kondo destruction at a mixed-valent quantum critical point, where a collapsing Kondo energy scale is accompanied by a singular charge-fluctuation spectrum. Both spin and charge responses scale with energy over temperature (ω/T) and…
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the Kondo-lattice system CeRuSi2 are experimentally investigated and analyzed in the series of other ternary cerium compounds. This system is shown to be an excellent model system demonstrating coexistence of the Kondo effect and anomalous ferromagnetism with a small magnetic moment which is confirmed by magnetic and μSR measurements. Data on specific heat, resistivity and Seebeck coefficient are presented. Being deduced from the resistivity and specific heat data, the non-Fermi-liquid behavior is observed at low temperatures, which is unus…
We use two different methods, the Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo simulation and the slave-boson mean field analysis to estimate the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the Kondo temperature in a quantum wire. In quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the product of spin susceptibility and temperature for different spin-orbit couplings and impurity energies. The variation of the Kondo temperature is estimated via the low temperature universal curves. In the mean field analysis, the Kondo temperature is estimated as the condensation temperature of slave-boson. Both the two methods demonstrate…
Recently, nonlinear responses have been actively studied in both experiments and theory. Particularly interesting are inversion-symmetry broken systems, where an even-order nonlinear electrical conductivity can be nonzero, resulting in nonreciprocity. Second-order nonlinear conductivities attract much attention because of their sensitivity to detect inversion-symmetry breaking in materials and their functionalities. However, while the nonlinear response has been actively studied in noninteracting systems for a long time, the nonlinear response in strongly correlated materials is still poorly u…
The renormalization group formalism was applied to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate of a well-defined magnetic moment in the neighborhood of a spin degenerate Anderson impurity. In the Kondo regime, the spin-lattice relaxation rate as a function of the temperature presents a peak at the Kondo temperature; for temperature much lower then the Kondo temperature, the system behaves as a heavy Fermy liquid, with an enhanced density of states, which increases with the decreasing of the Kondo temperature; the product of the temperature by the relaxation rate remains an universal function of…
A generalized Anderson model for a magnetic ion in a harmonic potential is formulated. The model is investigated by the numerical renormalization group(NRG) method. In addition to the conventional s-wave screening, the model exhibits phonon assisted p-wave Kondo effect as well as Yu and Anderson type Kondo effect. It is shown that the s-wave Kondo and the Yu-Anderson Kondo belong to the same fixed point. At the boundary between the s-wave and p-wave Kondo regions line of fixed points of the two channel Kondo effect is identified.
The ferromagnetic spin exchange interaction between the itinerant electrons and localized moments on a periodic lattice, studied within the so-called Kondo lattice model (KLM), is considered for multiband situation where the hopping integral is a matrix, in general. The modified RKKY theory, wherein one can map such a model onto an effective Heisenberg-like system, is extended to a multi-band case with finite bandwidth and hybridization on a simple cubic lattice. As an input for the evaluation of the effective exchange integrals, one requires the multi-band electronic self energy which is take…
Magnetic properties of uranium and neptunium compounds showing the coexistence of Kondo screening effect and ferromagnetic order are investigated within the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with a two-fold degenerate $f$-level in each site, corresponding to $5f^2$ electronic configuration with $S=1$ spins. A derivation of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation is presented and the resulting Hamiltonian has an effective $f$-band term, in addition to the regular exchange Kondo interaction between the $S=1$ $f$-spins and the $s=1/2$ spins of the conduction electrons. The obtained effective Kondo lattice…
We investigate the influence of degeneracies of the conduction band and the $f$-orbital on the stability of ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model. To this end we calculate the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility for different degeneracies $D^c, D^f$ and conduction electron densities $n^c$ within the dynamical mean-field theory. A strong increase of the Curie temperature $T_c$ with the degeneracy $D^f$ of the localized $f$-level is found. For $D^c \leq D^f$ a simple \emph{ansatz} based on a mean-field treatment of the RKKY interaction is shown to imply a scaling behavio…
We study the pseudogap Anderson model as a prototype system for critical Kondo destruction. We obtain finite-temperature (T) scaling functions near its quantum critical point, using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method and also considering a dynamical large-N limit. We are able to determine the behavior of the scaling functions in the typically-difficult-to-access quantum-relaxational regime (hbar w < k_B T), and conclude that the relaxation rates for both the spin and single-particle excitations are linear in temperature. We discuss the implications of these results for the quantum cr…
A particle-hole symmetric Anderson impurity model with a metallic host of narrow bandwidth is studied within the framework of the local moment approach. The resultant single-particle spectra are compared to unrestricted Hartree-Fock, second order perturbation theory about the noninteracting limit, and Lanczos spectra by Hofstetter and Kehrein. Rather accurate analytical results explain the spectral evolution over almost the entire range of interactions. These encompass, in particular, a rationale for the four-peak structure observed in the low-energy sector of the Lanczos spectra in the modera…
The symmetric periodic Anderson model is well known to capture the essential physics of Kondo insulator materials. Within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, we develop a local moment approach to its single-particle dynamics in the paramagnetic phase. The approach is intrinsically non-perturbative, encompasses all energy scales and interaction strengths, and satisfies the low-energy dictates of Fermi liquid theory. It captures in particular the strong coupling behaviour and exponentially small quasiparticle scales characteristic of the Kondo lattice regime, as well as simple perturba…
Using a canonical transformation it is possible to faithfully represent the Kondo lattice model in terms of Majorana fermions. Studying this representation we discovered an exact mapping between the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian and a Hamiltonian describing three spinless fermions interacting on a lattice. We investigate the effectiveness of this three fermion representation by performing a zero temperature mean-field study of the phase diagram at different couplings and fillings for the one-dimensional case, focusing on the appearance of ferromagnetism. The solutions agree in many respects with t…
The Kondo insulator state (KIS) realized in the symmetric Anderson model at half filling is studied in the framework of a mean field approach. It is shown that the state of the Kondo insulator is realized in a lattice with a double cell and a gapped electron liquid behaves like a gapless Majorana spin liquid. The local moments of d-electrons form a static $Z_2$-field in which band electrons move. The gap value in the quasi-particle excitations spectrum decreases with increasing an external magnetic field and closes at its critical value. The behavior of an electron liquid is studied for an arb…
We study the ground-state properties of an extended periodic Anderson model to understand the role of Hund's coupling between localized and itinerant electrons using the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. By calculating the von Neumann entropies we show that two phase transitions occur and two new phases appear as the hybridization is increased in the symmetric half-filled case due to the competition between Kondo-effect and Hund's coupling. In the intermediate phase, which is bounded by two critical points, we found a dimerized ground state, while in the other spatially homogeneo…
The Kondo effect in quantum dots (QDs) - artificial magnetic impurities - attached to ferromagnetic leads is studied with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. It is shown that the QD level is spin-split due to presence of ferromagnetic electrodes, leading to a suppression of the Kondo effect. We find that the Kondo effect can be restored by compensating this splitting with a magnetic field. Although the resulting Kondo resonance then has an unusual spin asymmetry with a reduced Kondo temperature, the ground state is still a locally-screened state, describable by Fermi liquid theor…
We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like |ε|^r at the Fermi energy (ε=0) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to |ω|^s. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time qu…
We introduce a new approach to the periodic Anderson model (PAM) that allows a detailed investigation of the magnetic properties in the Kondo as well as the intermediate valence regime. Our method is based on an exact mapping of the PAM onto an effective medium strong-coupling Hubbard model. For the latter, the so-called spectral density approach (SDA) is rather well motivated since it is based on exact results in the strong coupling limit. Besides the T=0 phase diagram, magnetization curves and Curie temperatures are presented and discussed with help of temperature-dependent quasiparticle den…
Kondo hybridization in partially filled f-electron systems conveys significant amount of electronic states sharply near the Fermi energy leading to various instabilities from superconductivity to exotic electronic orders. UGe2 is a 5f heavy fermion system, where the Kondo hybridization is interrupted by the formation of two ferromagnetic phases below a 2nd order transition Tc ~ 52 K and a crossover transition Tx ~ 32 K. These two ferromagnetic phases are concomitantly related to a spin-triplet superconductivity that only emerges and persists inside the magnetically ordered phase at high pressu…
The fidelities of the Kondo and the Friedel-Anderson (FA) impurities are calculated numerically. The ground states of both systems are calculated with the FAIR (Friedel artificially inserted resonance) theory. The ground state in the interacting systems is compared with a nullstate in which the interaction is zero. The different multi-electron states are expressed in terms of Wilson states. The use of N Wilson states simulates the use of a large effective number N_{eff} of states. A plot of ln(F) versus N\proptoln(N_{eff}) reveals whether one has an Anderson orthogonality catastrophe at zero e…
We study theoretically the Kondo effect for a magnetic adatom on graphene using the Anderson model.Upon obtaining the Green's function of the impurity to higher order contributions in the hybridization, we calculated analytically the selfenergy in the presence of strong correlations. It is found that the Kondo resonance takes place in a narrow energy range of the impurity level around the Fermi energy which can be tuned by a gate voltage. We show that this range is linear in the Fermi energy $|μ|$ and is significantly narrower than in the case for a normal metal. The origin of this behavior is tr…
Motivated by the experimental finding of Ferromagnetism (FM) near non-FL quantum phase transitions (QPT), I investigate FM in an Extended Periodic Anderson Model (EPAM). Using the Frobenius-Perron theorem, a FM {\it metallic} phase near the selective Mott localization is rigorously found. Interesting connections with Tasaki's flat-band ferromagnetism, as well as with the well-known double exchange (DE) mechanism are elucidated. This finding is a higher dimensional generalization of numerical work on the D=1 PAM, and constitutes a robust way to FM metallic behavior in $D>1$. Finally, we discuss…
We investigate a quantum dot (Anderson impurity) coupled to metallic leads, with a time-periodic voltage bias across the device. Using a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the model can be mapped onto a two-channel Kondo model, in which the impurity is screened by separate conduction bands corresponding to parity-even and odd superpositions of the metallic leads. By changing the frequency and amplitude of the perturbation, one can tune the system to a quantum critical point with symmetric coupling of the impurity to both channels. For the un…
The competition between Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange is studied for a system with geometrical frustration using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We systematically scan the weak- to strong-coupling regime of the periodic Anderson model on the triangular lattice for a wide range of fillings n. The magnetic phase diagram is derived using a site-dependent DMFT approach by self-consistent mapping onto three independent single-impurity models corresponding to the three correlated f orbitals in the unit cell. At half-filling, the system is a non-magnetic Kondo insulator for all c…
We investigate the effect of magnetic fields on a Kondo insulator by using the periodic Anderson model. The analysis by dynamical mean field theory combined with quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveals that the magnetic field drives the Kondo insulator to a transverse antiferromagnetic insulator at low temperatures. We calculate the staggered spin susceptibility and find its divergence signaling the antiferromagnetic instability. Further investigation of the spin correlation functions and the magnetization process clarifies how the magnetic field suppresses the Kondo singlet formation and indu…
In his renormalization paper of the Kondo effect Wilson replaced the full band of s-electrons by a small number of ''Wilson states''. He started from a rather artificial symmetric band with constant density of states and constant interaction with the impurity. It is shown in the present paper that with a minor modification the Wilson states are optimally suited to treat the interaction of an impurity with an arbitrary s-band. Each Wilson state represents electrons of a whole energy range. It carries the interaction of all these electrons with the impurity. All the other electron states in this…
Thermodynamic properties are presented for four magnetic impurity models describing delocalized fermions scattering from a localized orbital at an energy-dependent rate $Γ(ε)$ which vanishes precisely at the Fermi level, $ε= 0$. Specifically, it is assumed that for small $|ε|$, $Γ(ε)\propto|ε|^r$ with $r>0$. The cases $r=1$ and $r=2$ describe dilute magnetic impurities in unconventional superconductors, ``flux phases'' of the two-dimensional electron gas, and zero-gap semiconductors. For the nondegenerate Anderson model, the depression of the low-energy scattering rate suppresses mixed valence…
The thermodynamics of a lattice regularized asymmetric Anderson impurity in a correlated host is obtained by an exact solution. The crossover from the Anderson- to the Kondo-regime is studied, thus making contact with predictions by scaling theory. On the basis of the exact solution, the transition to universal Kondo behavior is shown to be realized by a graduate separation of the energy scales of spin and charge excitations.
Dilute magnetic impurities in a disordered Fermi liquid are considered close to the Anderson metal-insulator transition (AMIT). Critical Power law correlations between electron wave functions at different energies in the vicinity of the AMIT result in the formation of pseudogaps of the local density of states. Magnetic impurities can remain unscreened at such sites. We determine the density of the resulting free magnetic moments in the zero temperature limit. While it is finite on the insulating side of the AMIT, it vanishes at the AMIT, and decays with a power law as function of the distance …
The ferromagnetic phase diagram of the periodic Anderson model is calculated using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory. Concentrating on the intermediate valence regime, the phase boundaries are established as function of the total electron density, the position of the atomic level and the hybridization strength. The main contribution to the magnetic moment stems from the f-electrons. The conduction band polarization is, depending on the system parameters either parallel or antiparallel to the f-magnetization. By investigating the densities of state…
