We consider a 2D smectics model \begin{equation*} E_{ε}\left( u\right) =\frac{1}{2}\int_Ω\frac{1}{\varepsilon }\left( u_{z}-\frac{1% }{2}u_{x}^{2}\right) ^{2}+\varepsilon \left( u_{xx}\right) ^{2}dx\,dz. \end{equation*} For $\varepsilon _{n}\rightarrow 0$ and a sequence $\left\{ u_{n}\right\} $ with bounded energies $E_{\varepsilon _{n}}\left(u_{n}\right) ,$ we prove compactness of $\{\partial_z u_{n}\}$ in $L^{2}$ and $\{\partial_x u_n\}$ in $L^q$ for any $1\leq q<p$ under the additional assumption $\| \partial_x u_{n}\| _{L^{p }}\leq C$ for some $p>6$. We also prove a sharp lower bound on $E_{\varepsilon }$ when $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0.$ The sharp bound corresponds to the energy of a 1D ansatz in the transition region.
We consider the 3D smectic energy $$\mathcal{E}_{ε}\left( u\right) =\frac{1}{2}\int_{Ω}\frac{1}{\varepsilon } \left( u_z-\frac{( u_x)^{2}+( u_y)^{2}}{2}\right) ^{2}+\varepsilon \left( u_{xx}+u_{yy}\right)^{2}\,dx\,dy\,dz. $$ The model contains as a special case the well-known 2D Aviles-Giga model. We prove a sharp lower bound on $\mathcal{E}_{\varepsilon}$ as $\varepsilon \to 0$ by introducing 3D analogues of the Jin-Kohn entropies. The sharp bound corresponds to an equipartition of energy between the bending and compression strains and was previously demonstrated in the physics literature onl…
We consider the asymptotic behavior as $\varepsilon $ goes to zero of the 2D smectics model in the periodic setting given by \begin{equation*} \mathcal{E}_{\varepsilon }( w) =\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathbb{T}^{2}}\frac{1}{ \varepsilon }\left( \left\vert \partial_{1}\right\vert ^{-1}\left( \partial_{2}w-\partial_{1}\frac{1}{2}w^{2}\right) \right) ^{2}+\varepsilon \left( \partial_{1}w\right) ^{2}dx . \end{equation*} We show that the energy $\mathcal{E}_\varepsilon(w)$ controls suitable $L^p$ and Besov norms of $w$ and use this to demonstrate the existence of minimizers for $\mathcal{E}_\varepsilon(w)$…
For a sequence of blow up solutions of the Yamabe equation on non-locally confonformally flat compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension 10 or 11, we establish sharp estimates on its asymptotic profile near blow up points as well as sharp decay estimates of the Weyl tensor and its covariant derivatives at blow up points. If the Positive Mass Theorem held in dimensions 10 and 11, these estimates would imply the compactness of the set of solutions of the Yamabe equation on such manifolds.
We derive a selection of energy estimates for a generalisation of a critical equation on the unit disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ introduced by Rivière. Applications include sharp regularity results and compactness theorems which generalise a large amount of previous geometric PDE theory, including some of the theory of harmonic and almost-harmonic maps from surfaces.
We develop a comprehensive study on sharp potential type Riemannian Sobolev inequalities of order 2 by means of a local geometric Sobolev inequality of same kind and suitable De Giorgi-Nash-Moser estimates. In particular we discuss questions like continuous dependence of optimal constants and existence and compactness of extremal maps. The main obstacle arising in the present setting lies at fairly weak conditions of regularity assumed on potential functions.
In this paper, we extend the uniform regularity estimates obtained by M. Avellanda and F. Lin in the paper of Compactness methods in the theory of homogenization (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 40(1987), no.6, 803-847) to the more general second order elliptic systems in divergences form, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish not only sharp $W^{1,p}$ estimates, Holder estimates, Lipschitz estimates and non-tangential maximal function estimates for the Dirichelt problem on a $C^{1,η}$ domain, but also a sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rate in $H_0^1(Ω)$ by virtue of the Dirich…
This article concerns optimal estimates for non-homogeneous degenerate elliptic equation with source functions in borderline spaces of integrability. We deliver sharp Hölder continuity estimates for solutions to $p$-degenerate elliptic equations in rough media with sources in the weak Lebesgue space $L_\text{weak}^{\frac{n}{p} + ε}$. For the borderline case, $f \in L_\text{weak}^{\frac{n}{p}}$, solutions may not be bounded; nevertheless we show that solutions have bounded mean oscillation, in particular John-Nirenberg's exponential integrability estimates can be employed. All the results prese…
We study the branch of semi-stable and unstable solutions (i.e., those whose Morse index is at most one) of the Dirichlet boundary value problem $-Δu=\frac{λf(x)}{(1-u)^2}$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^N$, which models --among other things-- a simple electrostatic Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) device. We extend the results of [11] relating to the minimal branch, by obtaining compactness along unstable branches for $1\leq N \leq 7$ on any domain $Ω$ and for a large class of "permittivity profiles" $f$ . We also show the remarkable fact that power-like profiles $f(x) \simeq |x|^α$ ca…
We prove the two theorems of the title, settling two long standing questions in the local theory of singular minimal hypersurfaces. The sharpness of either result is with respect to its hypothesis on the size of the allowable singular sets. The proofs of both theorems rely heavily on the author's recent regularity and compactness theory for stable minimal hypersurfaces, and on earlier work of Ilmanen, Simon and Solomon--White.
We prove an improvement for the sharp Adams inequality in $W^{m,\frac nm}_0(Ω)$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ inspired by Lions Concentration--Compactness principle for the sharp Moser--Trudinger inequality. Our method gives an alternative approach to a Concentration--Compactness principle in $W^{m,\frac nm}_0(Ω)$ recently established by do Ó and Macedo. Moreover, when $m$ is odd, we obtain an improvement for their result by finding the best exponent in this principle. Our approach also is successfully applied to whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$ to establish an improvement for the …
The aim of the paper is to introduce an alternative notion of two-scale convergence which gives a more natural modeling approach to the homogenization of partial differential equations with periodically oscillating coefficients: while removing the bother of the admissibility of test functions, it nevertheless simplifies the proof of all the standard compactness results which made classical two-scale convergence very worthy of interest: bounded sequences in $L^2_{\sharp}[Y,L^2(Ω)]$ and $L^2_{\sharp}[Y,H^1(Ω)]$ are proven to be relatively compact with respect to this new type of convergence. The…
In this paper, we prove borderline gradient continuity of viscosity solutions to Fully nonlinear elliptic equations at the boundary of a $C^{1,\dini}$-domain. Our main result Theorem 3.1 is a sharpening of the boundary gradient estimate proved by Ma-Wang following the borderline interior gradient regularity estimates established Daskalopoulos-Kuusi-Mingione. We however mention that, differently from the approach in the interior case which depends on $W^{1,q}$ estimates, our proof is slightly more geometric and is based on compactness arguments inspired by the techniques in the fundamental work…
In this paper, we prove existence of \emph{very weak solutions} to nonhomogeneous quasilinear parabolic equations beyond the duality pairing. The main ingredients are a priori esitmates in suitable weighted spaces combined with the compactness argument developed in \cite{bulicek2018well}. In order to obtain the a priori estimates, we make use of the full Calderón-Zygmund machinery developed in the past few years and combine it with some sharp bounds for the subclass of Muckenhoupt weights considered in this paper.
Let $Ω$ be a compact smooth domain containing zero in the Poincaré ball model of the Hyperbolic space $\mathbb{B}^{n}$ ($n \geq 3$) and let $-Δ_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\mathbb{B}^{n}$, associated with the metric $g_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}= \frac{4}{(1-|x|^{2})^2}g_{_{\hbox{Eucl}}}$. We consider issues of non-existence, existence, and multiplicity of variational solutions for the borderline Dirichlet problem, \begin{eqnarray*} (E)~ \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -Δ_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}u-γ{V_2}u -λu&=V_{2^\star(s)}|u|^{2^\star(s)-2}u &\hbox{ in }Ω\\ \hfill u &=0 & \hbox{ on } \pa…
We study a sharp fractional Moser-Trudinger type inequality in dimension 1, its compactness properties and the critical points of a functional associeted to the inequality.
We prove that the weakly damped cubic Schrödinger flow in $L^2(\T)$ provides a dynamical system that possesses a global attractor. The proof relies on a sharp study of the behavior of the associated flow-map with respect to the weak $ L^2(\T) $-convergence inspired by a previous work of the author. Combining the compactness in $ L^2(\T) $ of the attractor with the approach developed by Goubet, we show that the attractor is actually a compact set of $ H^2(\T) $. This asymptotic smoothing effect is optimal in view of the regularity of the steady states.
Concerned with the Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we mainly extend the recent works in \cite{SGZWS,G} to those in term of Lipschitz domains. The arguments employed here are quite different from theirs, and the basic idea comes from \cite{QX2}, originally motivated by \cite{SZW2,SZW12,TS}. We obtain an almost-sharp $O(\varepsilon\ln(r_0/\varepsilon))$ convergence rate in $L^2$ space, and a sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ error estimate in $L^{\frac{2d}{d-1}}$ space by a little stronger assumption. Under the dimensional condition $d=2$, we also establish the optimal $O(\va…
We investigate a class of sharp Fourier extension inequalities on the planar curves $s=|y|^p$, $p>1$. We identify the mechanism responsible for the possible loss of compactness of nonnegative extremizing sequences, and prove that extremizers exist if $1<p<p_0$, for some $p_0>4$. In particular, this resolves the dichotomy of Jiang, Pausader & Shao concerning the existence of extremizers for the Strichartz inequality for the fourth order Schrödinger equation in one spatial dimension. One of our tools is a geometric comparison principle for $n$-fold convolutions of certain singular measures in $\…

Weighted good-$λ$ type inequalities and Muckenhoupt-Wheeden type bounds are obtained for gradients of solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. Such results are obtained globally over sufficiently flat domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ in the sense of Reifenberg. The principal operator here is modeled after the $p$-Laplacian, where for the first time singular case $\frac{3n-2}{2n-1}<p\leq 2-\frac{1}{n}$ is considered. Those bounds lead to useful compactness criteria for solution sets of quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. As an application, sharp existence…
We consider the following question: Given a connected open domain $Ω\subset R^n$, suppose $u,v:Ω\rightarrow R^n$ with $\det(\nabla u)>0$, $\det(\nabla v)>0$ a.e. are such that $\nabla u^T(x)\nabla u(x)=\nabla v(x)^T \nabla v(x)$ a.e. does this imply a global relation of the form $\nabla v(x)= R\nabla u(x)$ a.e. in $Ω$ where $R\in SO(n)$? If $u,v$ are $C^1$ it is an exercise to see this true, if $u,v\in W^{1,1}$ we show this is false. We prove this question has a positive answer if $v\in W^{1,1}$ and $u\in W^{1,n}$ is a mapping of $L^p$ integrable dilatation for $p>n-1$. These conditions are sh…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions, as well as continuous dependence on the initial datum, for a class of fully nonlinear second-order stochastic PDEs with drift in divergence form. Due to rather general assumptions on the growth of the nonlinearity in the drift, which, in particular, is allowed to grow faster than polynomially, existing techniques are not applicable. A well-posedness result is obtained through a combination of a priori estimates on regularized equations, interpreted both as stochastic equations as well as deterministic equations with random coefficients, an…
Given a closed Riemann surface $(Σ,g)$ and any positive smooth weight, we use a minmax scheme together with compactness, quantization results and with sharp energy estimates to prove the existence of positive critical points of the functional $$J_{p,β}(u)=\frac{2-p}{2}\left(\frac{p\|u\|_{H^1}^2}{2β} \right)^{\frac{p}{2-p}}-\ln \int_Σ(e^{u_+^p}-1) f dv_g,$$ for every $p\in (1,2)$ and $β>0$, {or} for $p=1$ and $β\in (0,\infty)\setminus 4π\mathbb{N}$. Letting $p\uparrow 2$ we obtain positive critical points of the Moser-Trudinger functional $$F(u):=\int_Σ(e^{u^2}-1)f dv_g$$ constrained to $\mathc…
