The newly found superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate superconducting films has attracted much attention, because their crystalline and electronic structures are similar to high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. The upper critical field can provide much information on superconductivity, but detailed experimental data are still lacking in these films. Here we present temperature and angle dependence of resistivity measured under different magnetic fields ($H$) in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_{2}$ thin films. The onset superconducting transition occurs at about 16.2 K at 0 T. Temperature dependent upper critical fields determined by using a criterion very close to the onset transition show a clear negative curvature near the critical transition temperature, which is explained as the consequence of the paramagnetically limited effect on superconductivity. The temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field is obtained from resistivity data, which yields a value decreasing from 3 to 1.2 with lowering temperature. This can be explained by a variable contribution from the orbital limit effect on upper critical field. The angle dependent resistivity at a fixed temperature and different magnetic fields cannot be scaled to one curve, which deviates from the prediction of the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory. However, at low temperatures, the increased resistivity by magnetic field can be scaled by the parameter $H^β|\cosθ|$ ($1<β<6$) with $θ$ the angle enclosed between $c$-axis and the applied magnetic field. As the first detailed study on the upper critical field of the nickelate thin films, our results clearly indicate a small anisotropy and paramagnetically limited effect of superconductivity in nickelate superconductors.
The recent observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_{2}$ has received considerable attention. Despite the many efforts to understand the superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates, a consensus on the underlying mechanism for the superconductivity has yet to be reached, partly owing to the challenges with the material synthesis. Here, we report the successful growth of superconducting infinite-layer Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_{2}$ films by pulsed-laser deposition and soft chemical reduction. The details on growth process will be discussed.
Nickelate films have recently attracted broad attention due to the observation of superconductivity in the infinite layer phase of $Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_2$ (obtained by reducing Sr doped $NdNiO_3$ films) and their similarity to the cuprates high temperature superconductors. Here we report on the observation of a new type of transport in oxygen poor $Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{3-δ}$ films. At high temperatures, variable range hopping is observed while at low temperatures a novel tunneling behavior is found where Josephson-like tunneling junction characteristic with serial resistance is revealed. We at…
Identifying the loss mechanisms of niobium film cavities enables an accurate determination of applications for future accelerator projects and points to research topics required to mitigate their limitations. Measurements on samples show that the electric field is a dominant loss mechanism for niobium films, acting through interface tunneling between localized states in surface oxides and delocalized states in the superconducting niobium.
For the first time, a comparison to the predicted behavior for parallel critical field is carried out for the model of Kogan and the model of Hara and Nagai. In this study, thin niobium films in the moderately dirty regime were considered. Experimental values of the $-C_{2}$ term are seen to be lower than those from the model of Hara and Nagai. A possible reason for this could be not including the non spherical Fermi surface of niobium into the model. There is clearly disagreement with the model of Kogan as the films get cleaner and thinner, and two films which should be below his critical thi…
We report the phase diagram of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ infinite layer thin films grown on SrTiO$_3$. A superconducting dome spanning $0.125 < x < 0.25$ is found, remarkably similar to cuprates, albeit over a narrower doping window. However, while cuprate superconductivity is bounded by an insulator for underdoping and a metal for overdoping, here we observe weakly insulating behavior on either side of the dome. Furthermore, the normal state Hall coefficient is always small and proximate to a continuous zero crossing in doping and in temperature, in contrast to the $\sim 1/x$ dependence observe…
The experimental investigation of the $I_c(B)$--$T_c(B)$ phase boundary of superconducting niobium films with large area quasihexagonal hole arrays is reported. The hole arrays were patterned with microsphere photolithography. We investigate the perforated niobium films by means of electrical directed current transport measurements close to the transition temperature $T_c$ in perpendicularly applied magnetic fields. We find pronounced modulations of the critcal current with applied magnetic field, which we interpret as a consequence of commensurable states between the Abrikosov vortex lattice …
We report the phase diagram of infinite layer Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films synthesized via topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase using CaH$_2$. Based on the electrical transport properties, we find a doping-dependent superconducting dome extending between $x$ = 0.12 and 0.28, with a maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm{c}}$ of 14 K at $x$ = 0.18, bounded by weakly insulating behavior on both sides. In contrast to the narrower dome observed in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$, a local $T_{\rm{c}}$ suppression near $x$ = 0.2 was not observed for the Pr$_{1-x…
Long standing data from niobium thin film accelerating cavities will be revisited and analysed by a modified London model of RF superconductivity. Firstly, the applicability of this model is explored using data of the BCS surface resistance and its dependence on the RF magnetic field, temperature and mean free path. Secondly, the RF losses from trapped magnetic flux are analysed with regard to their dependence on these same parameters.
We report the observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer Ca-doped LaNiO$_2$ (La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$NiO$_2$) thin films and construct their phase diagram. Unlike the metal-insulator transition in Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the undoped and underdoped La1-xCaxNiO2 thin films are entirely insulating from 300 K down to 2 K. A superconducting dome is observed at 0.15<x<0.3 with weakly insulating behavior at the overdoped regime. Moreover, the sign of the Hall coefficient $R_H$ changes at low temperature for samples with a higher doping level. However, distinct from the Nd- and Pr-based nickelate…
Interfacing bulk conducting topological Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films with s-wave superconductors initiates strong superconducting order in the nontrivial surface states. However, bulk insulating topological (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x})_2$Te$_3$ films on bulk Nb instead exhibit a giant attenuation of surface superconductivity, even for films only two-layers thick. This massive suppression of proximity pairing is evidenced by ultrahigh-resolution band mappings and by contrasting quantified superconducting gaps with those of heavily n-doped topological Bi$_2$Se$_3$/Nb. The results underscore the limitations of usin…
Point contact tunneling (PCT) and low energy muon spin rotation (LE-muSR) are used to probe, on the same samples, the surface superconducting properties of micrometer thick niobium films deposited onto copper substrates using different sputtereing techniques: diode, dc magnetron (dcMS) and HIPIMS. The combined results are compared to radio-frequency tests performances of RF cavities made with the same processes. Degraded surface superconducting properties are found to yield lower quality factors and stronger Q slope. In addition, both techniques find evidence for surface paramagnetism on all s…
We use room temperature ion beam assisted sputtering (IBAS) to deposit niobium nitride thin films. Electrical and structural characterizations were performed by electric transport and magnetization measurements at variable temperatures, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Compared to reactive sputtering of NbN, films sputtered in presence of an ion beam show remarkable increase in the superconducting critical temperature T$_{\rm{c}}$, while exhibiting lower sensitivity to nitrogen concentration during deposition. Thickness dependence of the superconducting critical temperature is co…
We report the results of the measurement the ac conductivity of a Nb superconducting thin film in a swept dc magnetic field. In the mixed state the swept dc field creates vortices at the film surface which pass through the film and form the observed ac conductivity. Vortex rate generation does not depend on the value of the dc field and there is a large plateau-like region of dc magnetic fields where the dissipation is approximately constant. A proposed phenomenological model describes quite well the main features of the ac response in these fields including its dependency on the sweep rate, a…
Structural and superconducting properties of high quality Niobium nanofilms with different thicknesses are investigated on silicon oxide and sapphire substrates. The role played by the different substrates and the superconducting properties of the Nb films are discussed based on the defectivity of the films and on the presence of an interfacial oxide layer between the Nb film and the substrate. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy is employed to uncover the structure of the interfacial layer. We show that this interfacial layer leads to a strong proximity effect, specially in films deposited on a…
We report on a combined structural and electronic analysis of niobium ultrathin films (from 2 to 10 nm) deposited in ultra-high vacuum on atomically flat R-plane sapphire wafers. A textured polycrystalline morphology is observed for the thinnest films showing that hetero-epitaxy is not achieved under a thickness of 3.3nm, which almost coincides with the first measurement of a superconducting state. The superconducting critical temperature rise takes place on a very narrow thickness range, of the order of a single monolayer (ML). The thinnest superconducting sample (3 nm/9ML) has an offset crit…
Superconducting niobium film cavities deposited on copper substrates (Nb/Cu) have suffered from strong field-dependent surface resistance, often referred to as the Q-slope problem, since their invention. We argue that the Q-slope may not be an intrinsic problem, but rather originates from a combination of factors which can be revealed in appropriate environmental conditions. In this study, extrinsic effects were carefully minimized in a series of experiments on a seamless cavity. The origin of the Q-slope in low frequency cavities is traced back to two contributions with different temperature …

The superconducting critical temperature, TC, of thin Nb films is significantly modified when gold nanoparticles (NPs) are chemically linked to the Nb film, with a consistent enhancement when using 3 nm long disilane linker molecules. The TC increases by up to 10% for certain linker length and NPs size. No change is observed when the nanoparticles are physisorbed with non-linking molecules. Electron tunneling spectra acquired on the linked NPs below TC typically exhibit zero-bias peaks. We attribute these results to a pairing mechanism coupling electrons in the Nb and the NPs, mediated by the …
We propose a model to explain power dissipation leading to the formation of hot spots in the inner walls of niobium thin film superconducting RF cavities. The physical mechanism that we explore is due to the constriction of surface electrical current flow at grain interface boundaries. This constriction creates an additional electrical contact resistance which induces localized punctual heat dissipation. The temperature at these spots is derived; and the electrical contact resistance is shown to depend on the magnetic field, on the gain contact size over which dissipation occurs, and on other …
Superconductivity has been realized in films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. Here we report synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline samples of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ ($0\le x\le 0.2$). Magnetization and resistivity measurements reveal that La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_3$ are paramagnetic metals and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ exhibit insulating behavior. Superconductivity is not detected in bulk samples of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. The absence of superconductivity in bulk La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ may be due to the generation of hydroxide during reduction or a small amount …
Here we report a novel nitridation technique for transforming niobium into hexagonal Nb2N which appears to be superconducting below 1K. The nitridation is achieved by high temperature annealing of Nb films grown on Si3N4/Si (100) substrate under high vacuum. The structural characterization directs the formation of a majority Nb2N phase while the morphology shows granular nature of the films. The temperature dependent resistance measurements reveal a wide metal-to-superconductor transition featuring two distinct transition regions. The region close to the normal state varies strongly with the f…
Recent studies suggests that in disordered ultrathin films superconducting (SC) state may be intrinsically inhomogeneous. Here we investigate the nature of SC state in ultrathin Nb films, of thickness $d$ ranging from 1.2 nm to 20 nm, which undergo a transition from amorphous to polycrystalline structure at the thickness $d \simeq 3.3$ nm. We show that the properties of SC state are very different in polycrystalline and amorphous films. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) is orbitally limited in the first case, and paramagnetically limited in the latter. The magnetic field induced superconduct…
