In this paper we address two questions about the synchronization of coupled oscillators in the Kuramoto model with all-to-all coupling. In the first part we use some classical results in convex geometry to prove bounds on the size of the frequency set supporting the existence of stable, phase locked solutions and show that the set of such frequencies can be expressed by a seminorm which we call the Kuramoto norm. In the second part we use some ideas from extreme order statistics to compute upper and lower bounds on the probability of synchronization for very general frequency distributions. We do so by computing exactly the limiting extreme value distribution of a quantity that is equivalent to the Kuramoto norm.
We investigate the synchronized collective behavior of the Kuramoto oscillators with inertia effect. Both the frequency synchronization for nonidentical case and the phase synchronization for identical case are in view. As an application of our general theory, we show the unconditional frequency synchronization for the three-nonidentical-oscillator case.
For original Kuramoto models with nonidentical oscillators, it is impossible to realize complete phase synchronization. However, this paper reveals that complete phase synchronization can be achieved for a large class of high-dimensional Kuramoto models with nonidentical oscillators. Under the topology of strongly connected digraphs, a necessary and sufficient condition for complete phase synchronization is obtained. Finally, some simulations are provided to validate the obtained theoretic results.
In this paper, we study the complete synchronization of the Kuramoto model with general network containing a spanning tree, when the initial phases are distributed in an open half circle. As lack of uniform coercivity in general digraph, in order to capture the dissipation structure on a general network, we apply the node decomposition criteria in \cite{H-L-Z20} to yield a hierarchical structure, which leads to the hypo-coercivity. This drives the phase diameter into a small region after finite time in a large coupling regime, and the uniform boundedness of the diameter eventually leads to the…

In this paper, we will study the emergent behavior of Kuramoto model with frustration on a general digraph containing a spanning tree. We provide a sufficient condition for the emergence of asymptotical synchronization if the initial data is confined in half circle. As lack of uniform coercivity in general digraph, we apply the node decomposition criteria in \cite{H-L-Z20} to capture a clear hierarchical structure, which successfully yields the dissipation mechanism of phase diameter and a small invariant set after finite time. Then the dissipation of frequency diameter will be clear, which ev…
One of a classical synchronization model is the Kuramoto model. We propose both first and second order Kuramoto dynamical models on graphs using discrete optimal transport dynamics. We analyze the synchronization behaviors for some examples of Kuramoto models on graphs. We also provide a generalized Hopf-Cole transformation for discrete optimal transport systems. Focus on the two points graph, we derive analytical formulas of the Kuramoto dynamics with various potential induced from entropy functionals. Several numerical examples for the Kuramoto model on general graphs are presented.
We discuss the asymptotic frequency synchronization for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators with time delayed interactions. We provide explicit lower bound on the coupling strength and upper bound on time delay in terms of initial configurations ensuring exponential synchronization. This generalizes not only the frequency synchronization estimate by Choi et al. [Physica D, 241, (2012), 735-754] for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators without time delays but also improves previous result by Schmidt et al. [Automatica, 48, (2012), 3008-3017] in the case of homogeneous time delays where the…
In this article we study synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators with heterogeneous frequencies, and where underlying topology is a graph of diameter two. When the coupling strengths between every two connected oscillators are the same, we find an analytic condition that guarantees an existence of a Positively Invariant Set (PIS) and demonstrate that existence of a PIS suffices for frequency synchronization. For graphs of diameter two, this synchronization condition is significantly better than existing general conditions for an arbitrary topology. If the coupling strengths can be different fo…
We study synchronization of coupled Kuramoto oscillators with heterogeneous inherent frequencies and general underlying connectivity. We provide conditions on the coupling strength and the initial phases which guarantee the existence of a Positively Invariant Set (PIS) and lead to synchronization. Unlike previous works that focus only on analytical bounds, here we introduce an optimization approach to provide a computational-analytical bound that can further exploit the particular features of each individual system such as topology and frequency distribution. Examples are provided to illustrat…
In this paper, we will study the emergent dynamics of the discrete Kuramoto model for generic initial data. This is an extension of the previous work S.-Y. Ha et al. (2019), in which the initial configurations are supposed to be within a half circle. More precisely, we will provide the theory of discrete gradient flow which can be applied to general Euler iteration scheme. Therefore, as a direct application, we conclude the emergence of synchronization of discrete Kuramoto model. Moreover, we obtain for small mesh size that, the synchronization will occur exponentially fast for initial data in…
We analyze two classes of Kuramoto models on spheres that have been introduced in previous studies. Our analysis is restricted to ensembles of identical oscillators with the global coupling. In such a setup, with an additional assumption that the initial distribution of oscillators is uniform on the sphere, one can derive equations for order parameters in closed form. The rate of synchronization in a real Kuramoto model depends on the dimension of the sphere. Specifically, synchronization is faster on higher-dimensional spheres. On the other side, real order parameter in complex Kuramoto model…
We present and analyze a nonabelian version of the Kuramoto system, which we call the quantum Kuramoto system. We study the stability of several classes of special solutions to this system, and show that for certain connection topologies the system supports multiple attractors. We also present estimates on the maximal possible heterogeneity in this system that can support an attractor, and study the effect of modifications analogous to phase-lag.
In his classical work, Kuramoto analytically described the onset of synchronization in all-to-all coupled networks of phase oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. Specifically, he identified a critical value of the coupling strength, at which the incoherent state loses stability and a gradual build-up of coherence begins. Recently, Kuramoto's scenario was shown to hold for a large class of coupled systems on convergent families of deterministic and random graphs. Guided by these results, in the present work, we study several model problems illustrating the link between network topology…
In our previous work [Chiba, Medvedev, arXiv:1612.06493], we initiated a mathematical investigation of the onset of synchronization in the Kuramoto model (KM) of coupled phase oscillators on convergent graph sequences. There, we derived and rigorously justified the mean field limit for the KM on graphs. Using linear stability analysis, we identified the critical values of the coupling strength, at which the incoherent state looses stability, thus, determining the onset of synchronization in this model. In the present paper, we study the corresponding bifurcation. Specifically, we show that sim…
Kuramoto model is one of the most prominent models for the synchronization of coupled oscillators. It has long been a research hotspot to understand how natural frequencies, the interaction between oscillators, and network topology determine the onset of synchronization. In this paper, we investigate the critical coupling of Kuramoto oscillators on deterministic dense networks, viewed as a natural generalization from all-to-all networks of identical oscillators. We provide a sufficient condition under which the Kuramoto model with non-identical oscillators has one unique and stable equilibrium…
We study synchronization properties of systems of Kuramoto oscillators. The problem can also be understood as a question about the properties of an energy landscape created by a graph. More formally, let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected graph and $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1}^{n}$ denotes its adjacency matrix. Let the function $f:\mathbb{T}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be given by $$ f(θ_1, \dots, θ_n) = \sum_{i,j=1}^{n}{ a_{ij} \cos{(θ_i - θ_j)}}.$$ This function has a global maximum when $θ_i = θ$ for all $1\leq i \leq n$. It is known that if every vertex is connected to at least $μ(n-1)$ other vertices for $μ$ su…
