Kuramoto model is one of the most prominent models for the synchronization of coupled oscillators. It has long been a research hotspot to understand how natural frequencies, the interaction between oscillators, and network topology determine the onset of synchronization. In this paper, we investigate the critical coupling of Kuramoto oscillators on deterministic dense networks, viewed as a natural generalization from all-to-all networks of identical oscillators. We provide a sufficient condition under which the Kuramoto model with non-identical oscillators has one unique and stable equilibrium. Moreover, this equilibrium is phase cohesive and enjoys local exponential synchronization. We perform numerical simulations of the Kuramoto model on random networks and circulant networks to complement our theoretical analysis and provide insights for future research.
We study synchronization properties of systems of Kuramoto oscillators. The problem can also be understood as a question about the properties of an energy landscape created by a graph. More formally, let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected graph and $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1}^{n}$ denotes its adjacency matrix. Let the function $f:\mathbb{T}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be given by $$ f(θ_1, \dots, θ_n) = \sum_{i,j=1}^{n}{ a_{ij} \cos{(θ_i - θ_j)}}.$$ This function has a global maximum when $θ_i = θ$ for all $1\leq i \leq n$. It is known that if every vertex is connected to at least $μ(n-1)$ other vertices for $μ$ su…
Consider any network of $n$ identical Kuramoto oscillators in which each oscillator is coupled bidirectionally with unit strength to at least $μ(n-1)$ other oscillators. There is a critical value of the connectivity, $μ_c$, such that whenever $μ>μ_c$, the system is guaranteed to converge to the all-in-phase synchronous state for almost all initial conditions, but when $μ<μ_c$, there are networks with other stable states. The precise value of the critical connectivity remains unknown, but it has been conjectured to be $μ_c=0.75$. In 2020, Lu and Steinerberger proved that $μ_c\leq 0.7889$, and Y…
A family of stochastic processes has quasi-cycle oscillations if the oscillations are sustained by noise. For such a family we define a Kuramoto-type coupling of both phase and amplitude processes. We find that synchronization, as measured by the phase-locking index, increases with coupling strength, and appears, for larger network sizes, to have a critical value, at which the network moves relatively abruptly from incoherence to complete synchonization as in Kuramoto couplings of fixed amplitude oscillators. We compare several aspects of the dynamics of unsynchronized and highly synchronized …
The Kuramoto model with high-order coupling has recently attracted some attention in the field of coupled oscillators in order, for instance, to describe clustering phenomena in sets of coupled agents. Instead of considering interactions given directly by the sine of oscillators' angle differences, the interaction is given by the sum of sines of integer multiples of these angle differences. This can be interpreted as a Fourier decomposition of a general $2π$-periodic interaction function. We show that in the case where only one multiple of the angle differences is considered, which we refer to…
Using a survey of wristwatch synchronization from a randomly selected group of independent volunteers, one can model the system as a Kuramoto-type coupled oscillator network. Based on the phase data, both the order parameter and an estimated value of the coupling is derived and the possibilities for similar research to deduce topology from dynamics are discussed.
We study two groups of nonidentical Kuramoto oscillators with differing frequency distributions. Coupling between the groups is repulsive, while coupling between oscillators of the same group is attractive. This asymmetry of interactions leads to an interesting synchronization behavior. For small coupling strength, the mean-fields of both groups resemble a more weakly coupled Kuramoto model. After increasing the coupling strength beyond a threshold, they reach the Bellerophon state of multiple clusters of averagely entrained oscillators. A further increase in the coupling strength then asympto…
We consider the Kuramoto model of an ensemble of interacting oscillators allowing for an arbitrary distribution of frequencies and coupling strengths. We define a family of traveling wave states as stationary in a rotating frame, and derive general equations for their parameters. We suggest empirical stability conditions which, for the case of incoherence, become exact. In addition to making new theoretical predictions, we show that many earlier results follow naturally from our general framework. The results are applicable in scientific contexts ranging from physics to biology.
When the natural frequencies are allocated symmetrically in the Kuramoto model there exists an invariant torus of dimension [N/2]+1 (N is the population size). A global phase shift invariance allows to reduce the model to $N-1$ dimensions using the phase differences, and doing so the invariant torus becomes [N/2]-dimensional. By means of perturbative calculations based on the renormalization group technique, we show that this torus is asymptotically stable at small coupling if N is odd. If N is even the torus can be stable or unstable depending on the natural frequencies, and both possibilitie…
We study synchronization in a Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators with a bi-harmonic coupling function, in the thermodynamic limit of large populations. We develop a method for an analytic solution of self-consistent equations describing uniformly rotating complex order parameters, both for single-branch (one possible state of locked oscillators) and multi-branch (two possible values of locked phases) entrainment. We show that synchronous states coexist with the neutrally linearly stable asynchronous regime. The latter has a finite life time for finite ensembles, this time gro…
We derive the Kuramoto model (KM) corresponding to a population of weakly coupled, nearly identical quadratic integrate-and-fire (QIF) neurons with both electrical and chemical coupling. The ratio of chemical to electrical coupling determines the phase lag of the characteristic sine coupling function of the KM and critically determines the synchronization properties of the network. We apply our results to investigate chimera states in two coupled populations of identical QIF neurons. We find that the presence of both electrical and chemical coupling is a necessary condition for chimera states …
Many real-world examples of distributed oscillators involve not only time delays but also attractive (positive) and repulsive (negative) influences in their network interactions. Here, considering such examples, we generalize the Kuramoto model of globally coupled oscillators with time-delayed positive and negative couplings to explore the effects of such couplings in collective phase synchronization. We analytically derive the exact solutions for stable incoherent and coherent states in terms of the system parameters allowing us to precisely understand the interplay of time delays and couplin…

Repulsive oscillator networks can exhibit multiple cooperative rhythms, including chimera and cluster splay states. Yet, understanding which rhythm prevails remains challenging. Here, we address this fundamental question in the context of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi networks of identical rotators with higher-order coupling. Through analysis and numerics, we show that three-cluster splay states with two distinct coherent clusters and a solitary oscillator are the prevalent rhythms in networks with an odd number of units. We denote such tripod patterns cyclops states with the solitary oscillator reminisc…
Kuramoto oscillators are widely used to explain collective phenomena in networks of coupled oscillatory units. We show that simple networks of two populations with a generic coupling scheme, where both coupling strengths and phase lags between and within populations are distinct, can exhibit chaotic dynamics as conjectured by Ott and Antonsen [Chaos, 18, 037113 (2008)]. These chaotic mean-field dynamics arise universally across network size, from the continuum limit of infinitely many oscillators down to very small networks with just two oscillators per population. Hence, complicated dynamics …
The Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model for coupled phase oscillators with phase-frustration is often studied in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators. Here we extend a model reduction method based on collective coordinates to capture the collective dynamics of finite size Kuramoto-Sakaguchi models. We find that the inclusion of the effects of rogue oscillators is essential to obtain an accurate description, in contrast to the original Kuramoto model where we show that their effects can be ignored. We further introduce a more accurate ansatz function to describe the shape of synchronized…
We consider a variation of the Kuramoto model with dynamic coupling, where the coupling strengths are allowed to evolve in response to the phase difference between the oscillators, a model first considered by Ha, Noh and Park. In particular we study the stability of fixed points for this model. We demonstrate a somewhat surprising fact: namely that the fixed points of this model, as well as their stability, can be completely expressed in terms of the fixed points and stability of the analogous classical Kuramoto problem where the coupling strengths are fixed to a constant (the same for all edg…

We generalize the Kuramoto model for the synchronization transition of globally coupled phase oscillators to populations by incorporating an additional heterogeneity with the coupling strength, where each oscillator pair interacts with different coupling strength weighted by a genera; function of their natural frequency. The expression for the critical coupling can be straightforwardly extended to a generalized explicit formula analytically, and s self-consistency approach is developed to predict the stationary states in the thermodynamic limit. The landau damping effect is further revealed by…
The Kuramoto model describes the synchronization of coupled oscillators that have different natural frequencies. Among the many generalizations of the original model, Kuramoto and Sakaguchi (KS) proposed a {\it frustrated} version that resulted in dynamic behavior of the order parameter, even when the average natural frequency of the oscillators is zero. Here we consider a generalization of the frustrated KS model that exhibits new transitions to synchronization. The model is identical in form to the original Kuramoto model, but written in terms of unit vectors. Replacing the coupling constant…
This paper presents new methods and results on almost global synchronization of coupled Hopf nonlinear oscillators, which are commonly used as the dynamic model of engineered central pattern generators (CPGs). On balanced graphs, any positive coupling gain is proven to induce almost global asymptotic synchronization, and a threshold value for truly global exponential synchronization is also computed. Furthermore, a hierarchical connection between coupled Hopf oscillators and Kuramoto oscillators is identified. Finally, a new result on the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators with arbitrary …
The Kuramoto model is a mathematical model for describing the collective synchronization phenomena of coupled oscillators. We theoretically demonstrate that an array of coupled photonic crystal lasers emulates the Kuramoto model with non-delayed nearest-neighbor coupling (the local Kuramoto model). Our novel strategy employs indirect coupling between lasers via additional cold cavities. By installing cold cavities between laser cavities, we avoid the strong coupling of lasers and realize ideal mutual injection-locking with effective non-delayed dissipative coupling. First, after discussing the…
Synchronization commonly occurs in many natural and man-made systems, from neurons in the brain to cardiac cells to power grids to Josephson junction arrays. Transitions to or out of synchrony for coupled oscillators depend on several factors, such as individual frequencies, coupling, interaction time delays and network structure-function relation. Here, using a generalized Kuramoto model of time-delay coupled phase oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling, we study the stability of incoherent and coherent states and the transitions to or out of explosive (abrupt, first-order like) phase s…
How higher-order interactions influence the dynamics of second order phase oscillators? We address this question using three coupled Kuramoto phase oscillators with inertia under both pairwise and higher order interactions, finding collective states, which are absent for pair-wise interactions. Chimera states appear in an expanded parameter region of the 3-node network by comparison to the network's response in the absence of the higher-order interactions. %That attempt enables us to understand the emergence of chimera states. This small network of three nodes is investigated for different set…
We construct a nontrivial generalization of the paradigmatic Kuramoto model by using an additional coupling term that explicitly breaks its rotational symmetry resulting in a variant of the Winfree Model. Consequently, we observe the characteristic features of the phase diagrams of both the Kuramoto model and the Winfree model depending on the degree of the symmetry breaking coupling strength for unimodal frequency distribution. The phase diagrams of both the Kuramoto and the Winfree models resemble each other for symmetric bimodal frequency distribution for a range of the symmetry breaking co…
In his classical work, Kuramoto analytically described the onset of synchronization in all-to-all coupled networks of phase oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. Specifically, he identified a critical value of the coupling strength, at which the incoherent state loses stability and a gradual build-up of coherence begins. Recently, Kuramoto's scenario was shown to hold for a large class of coupled systems on convergent families of deterministic and random graphs. Guided by these results, in the present work, we study several model problems illustrating the link between network topology…
We study a variant of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model in which oscillators are divided into two groups, each characterized by its coupling constant and phase lag. Specifically, we consider the case that one coupling constant is positive and the other negative, and calculate numerically the traveling speed of two clusters emerging in the system and average separation between them as well as the order parameters for positive and negative oscillators, as the two coupling constants, phase lags, and the fraction of positive oscillators are varied. An expression explaining the dependence of the traveling s…
We analyze star-type networks of phase oscillators by virtue of two methods. For identical oscillators we adopt the Watanabe-Strogatz approach, that gives full an- alytical description of states, rotating with constant frequency. For nonidentical oscillators, such states can be obtained by virtue of the self-consistent approach in a parametric form. In this case stability analysis cannot be performed, however with the help of direct numerical simulations we show which solutions are stable and which not. We consider this system as a model for a drum orchestra, where we assume that the drummers …
We study the effects of Janus oscillators in a system of phase oscillators in which the coupling constants take both positive and negative values. Janus oscillators may also form a cluster when the other ones are ordered and we calculate numerically the traveling speed of three clusters emerging in the system and average separations between them as well as the order parameters for three groups of oscillators, as the coupling constants and the fractions of positive and Janus oscillators are varied. An expression explaining the dependence of the traveling speed on these parameters is obtained an…
A fundamental understanding of synchronized behavior in multi-agent systems can be acquired by studying analytically tractable Kuramoto models. However, such models typically diverge from many real systems whose dynamics evolve under non-negligible resource constraints. Here we construct a system of coupled Kuramoto oscillators that consume or produce resources as a function of their oscillation frequency. At high coupling, we observe strongly synchronized dynamics, whereas at low coupling we observe independent oscillator dynamics, as expected from standard Kuramoto models. For intermediate c…
We analyze two classes of Kuramoto models on spheres that have been introduced in previous studies. Our analysis is restricted to ensembles of identical oscillators with the global coupling. In such a setup, with an additional assumption that the initial distribution of oscillators is uniform on the sphere, one can derive equations for order parameters in closed form. The rate of synchronization in a real Kuramoto model depends on the dimension of the sphere. Specifically, synchronization is faster on higher-dimensional spheres. On the other side, real order parameter in complex Kuramoto model…
The emergence of collective synchrony from an incoherent state is a phenomenon essentially described by the Kuramoto model. This canonical model was derived perturbatively, by applying phase reduction to an ensemble of heterogeneous, globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. This derivation neglects nonlinearities in the coupling constant. We show here that a comprehensive analysis requires extending the Kuramoto model up to quadratic order. This "enlarged Kuramoto model" comprises three-body (nonpairwise) interactions, which induce strikingly complex phenomenology at certain parameter value…
The high-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Kuramoto paradigm has been an essential step in bringing about a more faithful depiction of the dynamics of real-world systems. Despite the multi-dimensional nature of the oscillators in these generalized models, the interacting schemes so far have been dominated by a scalar factor unanimously between any pair of oscillators that leads eventually to synchronization on all dimensions. As a natural extension of the scalar coupling befitting for the one-dimensional case, we take a tentative step in studying numerically and theoretically t…
Interaction within an ensemble of coupled nonlinear oscillators induces a variety of collective behaviors. One of the most fascinating is a chimera state which manifests the coexistence of spatially distinct populations of coherent and incoherent elements. Understanding of the emergent chimera behavior in controlled experiments or real systems requires a focus on the consideration of heterogeneous network models. In this study, we explore the transitions in a heterogeneous Kuramoto model under the monotonical increase of the coupling strength and specifically find that this system exhibits a f…
We show that an introduction of a phase parameter ($α$), with $0 \le α\le π/2$, in the interlayer coupling terms of multiplex networks of Kuramoto oscillators can induce explosive synchronization (ES) in the multiplexed layers. Along with the α values, the hysteresis width is determined by the interlayer coupling strength and the frequency mismatch between the mirror (inter-connected) nodes. A mean-field analysis is performed to support the numerical results. Similar to the earlier works, we find that the suppression of synchronization is accountable for the origin of ES. The robustness of ES …
We explore the collective phase dynamics of Wien-bridge oscillators coupled resistively. We carefully analyze the behavior of two coupled oscillators, obtaining a transformation from voltage to effective phase. From the phase dynamics we show that the coupling can be quantitatively described by Sakaguchi's modification to the Kuramoto model. We also examine an ensemble of oscillators whose frequencies are taken from a flat distribution within a fixed frequency interval. We characterize in detail the synchronized cluster, its initial formation, as well as its effect on unsynchronized oscillator…
We have studied the dynamics of the paradigmatic Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model of identical coupled phase oscilla- tors with various kinds of time-dependent connectivity using Eulerian discretization. We first explore the parameter spaces for various types of collective states using the phase plots of the two statistical quantities, namely the strength of incoherence and the discontinity measure. In the quasi-static limit of the changing of coupling range, we have observed how the system relaxes from one state to another and have identified a few interesting collective dynamical states along the wa…
Determining the number of stable phase-locked solutions for locally coupled Kuramoto models is a long-standing mathematical problem with important implications in biology, condensed matter physics and electrical engineering among others. We investigate Kuramoto models on networks with various topologies and show that different phase-locked solutions are related to one another by loop currents. The latter take only discrete values, as they are characterized by topological winding numbers. This result is generically valid for any network, and also applies beyond the Kuramoto model, as long as th…

We present a generalization of the Kuramoto phase oscillator model in which phases advance in discrete phase increments through Poisson processes, rendering both intrinsic oscillations and coupling inherently stochastic. We study the effects of phase discretization on the synchronization and precision properties of the coupled system both analytically and numerically. Remarkably, many key observables such as the steady-state synchrony and the quality of oscillations show distinct extrema while converging to the classical Kuramoto model in the limit of a continuous phase. The phase-discretized …
An incorporation of higher-order interactions is known to lead an abrupt first-order transition to synchronization in otherwise smooth second-order one for pair-wise coupled systems. Here, we show that adaptation in higher-order coupling strength may yield completely different phenomena, notably, second-order transition to synchronization and tiered synchronization. Using the Ott-Antonsen approach, we perform rigorous theoretical calculations illustrating the origin of these emerging phenomena along with a complete description of all (un)stable states. Numerical simulations for limited-size ne…
