Massive MIMO and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are crucial methods for future wireless systems as they provide many advantages over conventional systems. Power-domain NOMA methods are investigated in massive MIMO systems, whereas there is little work on integration of code-domain NOMA and massive MIMO which is the subject of this study. We propose a general framework employing user-grouping based hybrid beamforming architecture for mm-wave massive MIMO systems where NOMA is considered as an intra-group process. It is shown that classical receivers of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) and multi-user shared access (MUSA) can be directly adapted. Additionally, a novel receiver architecture which is an improvement over classical one is proposed for uplink MUSA. This receiver makes MUSA preferable over SCMA for uplink transmission with lower complexity. We provide a lower bound on achievable information rate (AIR) as a performance measure. We show that code-domain NOMA schemes outperform conventional methods with very limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains where users are spatially close to each other. Furthermore, we provide an analysis in terms of bit-error rate and AIR under different code length and overloading scenarios for uplink transmission where flexible structure of MUSA is exploited.
In overloaded Massive MIMO systems, wherein the number K of user equipments (UEs) exceeds the number of base station antennas M, it has recently been shown that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can increase performance. This paper aims at identifying cases of the classical operating regime K < M, where code-domain NOMA can also improve the spectral efficiency of Massive MIMO. Particular attention is given to use cases in which poor favorable propagation conditions are experienced. Numerical results show that Massive MIMO with planar antenna arrays can benefit from NOMA in practical scenar…
In this paper, we compare the individual rate of MIMO-NOMA and MIMO-OMA when users are paired into clusters. A power allocation (PA) strategy is proposed, which ensures that MIMO-NOMA achieves a higher individual rate for each user than MIMO-OMA with arbitrary PA and optimal degrees of freedom split. In addition, a special case with equal degrees of freedom and arbitrary PA for OMA is considered, for which the individual rate superiority of NOMA still holds. Moreover, it is shown that NOMA can attain better fairness through appropriate PA. Finally, simulations are carried out, which validate t…
This paper compares the sum rates and rate regions achieved by power-domain NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access) and standard massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) techniques. We prove analytically that massive MIMO always outperforms NOMA in i.i.d.~Rayleigh fading channels, if a sufficient number of antennas are used at the base stations. The simulation results show that the crossing point occurs already when having 20-30 antennas, which is far less than what is considered for the next generation cellular networks.
Signaling design for secure transmission in two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks is investigated in this paper. The base station broadcasts multicast data to all users and also integrates additional services, unicast data targeted to certain users, and confidential data protected against eavesdroppers. We categorize the above MIMO-NOMA with different security requirements into several communication scenarios. The associated problem in each scenario is nonconvex. We propose a unified approach, called the power splitting scheme, for optimi…

This paper considers the use of NOMA in multiuser MIMO systems in practical scenarios where CSI is acquired through pilot signaling. A new NOMA scheme that uses shared pilots is proposed. Achievable rate analysis is carried out for different pilot signaling schemes including both uplink and downlink pilots. The achievable rate performance of the proposed NOMA scheme with shared pilot within each group is compared with the traditional orthogonal access scheme with orthogonal pilots. Our proposed scheme is a generalization of the orthogonal scheme, and can be reduced to the orthogonal scheme whe…
In this letter, a low-feedback non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is proposed. In particular, the proposed scheme can decompose a massive-MIMO-NOMA system into multiple separated single-input single-output NOMA channels, and analytical results are developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme for two scenarios, with perfect user ordering and with one-bit feedback, respectively.
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the newest member of the multiple access family, is envisioned to be an essential component of 5G mobile networks. The combination of NOMA and multi-antenna multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technologies exhibits a significant potential in improving spectral efficiency and providing better wireless services to more users. In this article, we introduce the basic concepts of MIMO-NOMA and summarize the key technical problems in MIMO-NOMA systems. Then, we explore the problem formulation, beamforming, user clustering, and power allocation of single/multi-cl…
The error performance of the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) technique suffers from the inter-user interference (IUI) although it is a promising technique for the future wireless systems in terms of the achievable sum rate. Hence, a multiple access technique design with limited IUI and competitive to NOMA in terms of spectral efficiency is essential. In this letter, we consider so-called spatial multiple access (SMA) which is based on applying the principle of spatial modulation (SM) through the different users' data streams, as a strong alternative to MIMO-NOMA systems. The analytical e…
Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has been proposed to enhance the Spectrum Efficiency (SE) and cell-edge capacity. This paper considers the massive Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) encoding. The close-form expression of capacity of the massive MIMO with NOMA is given here. Apart from the previous Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) method, the Power Hard Limiter (PHD) is introduced here for better reality implement.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are foreseen to constitute promising airborne communication devices as a benefit of their superior channel quality. But UAV-to-ground (U2G) communications are vulnerable to eavesdropping. Hence, we conceive a sophisticated physical layer security solution for improving the secrecy rate of multi-antenna aided U2G systems. Explicitly, the secrecy rate of the U2G MIMO wiretap channels is derived by using random matrix theory. The resultant explicit expression is then applied in the joint optimization of the MIMO transceiver and the UAV location relying on an altern…
In this paper, we consider the uplink and downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We propose novel uplink and downlink precoding and decoding schemes that lower the decoding complexity at the receiver by decomposing the MIMO-NOMA channels of the users into multiple single-input single-output (SISO)-NOMA channels via simultaneous triangularization (ST) of the MIMO channels of the users and a low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the receiver. The proposed ST MIMO-NOMA schemes avoid channel…
This letter focuses on the physical layer security over two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. A linear precoding technique is designed to ensure the confidentiality of the message of each user from its counterpart. This technique first splits the base station power between the two users and, based on that, decomposes the secure MIMO-NOMA channel into two MIMO wiretap channels, and designs the transmit covariance matrix for each channel separately. The proposed method substantially enlarges the secrecy rate compared to existing linear pre…
The application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems is important to enhance the performance gains of NOMA. In this paper, a novel MIMO-NOMA framework for downlink and uplink transmission is proposed by applying the concept of signal alignment. By using stochastic geometry, closed-form analytical results are developed to facilitate the performance evaluation of the proposed framework for randomly deployed users and interferers. The impact of different power allocation strategies, such as fixed power allocation and cognitive radio …
Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is a multiplexing technique for future wireless, which when combined with Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) unlocks higher capacities for systems where users have varying channel strength. NOMA utilises the channel differences to increase the throughput, while MIMO exploits the additional degrees of freedom (DoF) to enhance this. This work analyses the secrecy capacity, demonstrating the robustness of a combined MIMO-NOMA scheme at physical layer, when in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. We present bounds on the eavesdropper performance and show…
This paper seeks to answer a simple but fundamental question: What role can NOMA play in massive MIMO? It is well-established that power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes can outperform conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes in cellular networks. However, this fact does not imply that NOMA is the most efficient way to communicate in massive MIMO setups, where the base stations have many more antennas than there are users in the cell. These setups are becoming the norm in future networks and are usually studied by assuming spatial multiplexing of the users usin…
This paper considers a Iterative Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) detection for the uplink Multiuser Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) systems with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), in which all the users interfere with each other both in the time domain and frequency domain. It is well known that the Iterative LMMSE detection greatly reduces the system computational complexity by departing the overall processing into many low-complexity distributed calculations that can be executed in parallel. However, it is generally considered to be suboptimal and achieves relativel…
We consider the problem of efficient ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) data detection in terahertz (THz)-band non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We argue that the most common THz NOMA configuration is power-domain superposition coding over quasi-optical doubly-massive MIMO channels. We propose spatial tuning techniques that modify antenna subarray arrangements to enhance channel conditions. Towards recovering the superposed data at the receiver side, we propose a family of data detectors based on low-complexity channel matrix puncturing, in which higher-order d…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology facilitates huge increases in the capacity of wireless channels, while non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) addresses the problem of limited resources in traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques, promising enhanced spectral efficiency. This work uses asymptotic capacity computation results to reduce the complexity of a power allocation algorithm for small-scale MIMO-NOMA, so that it may be applied for systems with massive MIMO arrays. The proposed method maximizes the sum-capacity of the considered system, subject to powe…
Hybrid transceiver can strike a balance between complexity and performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we develop a unified framework on hybrid MIMO transceiver design using matrix-monotonic optimization. The proposed framework addresses general hybrid transceiver design, rather than just limiting to certain high frequency bands, such as millimeter wave (mmWave) or terahertz bands or relying on the sparsity of some specific wireless channels. In the proposed framework, analog and digital parts of a transceiver, either linear or nonlinear, are jointly optimi…
A feature of the Internet of Things (IoT) is that some users in the system need to be served quickly for small packet transmission. To address this requirement, a new multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) scheme is designed in this paper, where one user is served with its quality of service (QoS) requirement strictly met, and the other user is served opportunistically by using the NOMA concept. The novelty of this new scheme is that it confronts the challenge that most existing MIMO-NOMA schemes rely on the assumption that users' channel conditions are diffe…
MIMO-NOMA combines Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), which can address heterogeneous challenges, such as massive connectivity, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, a practical coded MIMO-NOMA system with capacityapproaching performance as well as low implementation complexity is proposed. Specifically, the employed receiver consists of a multi-user Linear Minimum Mean-Square Error (LMMSE) detector and a bank of single-user message-passing decoders, which decompose the overall signal recovery into distributed low-complexity calculation…
In this paper, we consider the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. The proposed precoding scheme is based on simultaneous triangularization and decomposes the MIMO-NOMA channels of the two users into multiple single-input single-output NOMA channels, assuming low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users. In contrast to the precoding schemes based on simultaneous diagonalization (SD), the proposed scheme avoids inverting the MIMO channels of the users, thereby enhancing the ergodic …
The recent concept of beamspace multiple input multiple output (MIMO) can significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems without obvious performance loss. However, the fundamental limit of existing beamspace MIMO is that, the number of supported users cannot be larger than the number of RF chains at the same time-frequency resources. To break this fundamental limit, in this paper we propose a new spectrum and energy efficient mmWave transmission scheme that integrates the concept of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) …
Mean-squared-error (MSE) is one of the most widely used performance metrics for the designs and analysis of multi-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications. Weighted MSE minimization, a more general formulation of MSE minimization, plays an important role in MIMO transceiver optimization. While this topic has a long history and has been extensively studied, existing treatments on the methods in solving the weighted MSE optimization are more or less sporadic and non-systematic. In this paper, we firstly review the two major methodologies, Lagrange multiplier method and majorization theory bas…
In this paper, optimal linear transceiver designs for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) Multiple-input Multiple-out (MIMO) relaying systems with Gaussian distributed channel estimation errors are investigated. Some commonly used transceiver design criteria are unified into a single matrix-variate optimization problem. With novel applications of majorization theory and properties of matrix-variate function, the optimal structure of robust transceiver is first derived. Based on the optimal structure, the original transceiver design problems are reduced to much simpler problems with only scalar …
In this paper, we investigate the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We propose a novel user-assisted (UA) simultaneous diagonalization (SD) based MIMO-NOMA scheme that achieves SD of the MIMO channels of both users through a combination of precoder design and low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users, thereby considerably lowering the overall decoding complexity compared to joint decoding. The achievable ergodic user rates of the proposed scheme are analyzed for Rayleigh fading channe…
This paper considers the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. A new design of precoding and detection matrices for MIMO-NOMA is proposed and its performance is analyzed for the case with a fixed set of power allocation coefficients. To further improve the performance gap between MIMO-NOMA and conventional orthogonal multiple access schemes, user pairing is applied to NOMA and its impact on the system performance is characterized. More sophisticated choices of power allocation coefficients are also proposed to meet var…
In multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, base stations (BSs) with multiple antennas deliver their radio frequency energy in the downlink, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices use their harvested energy to support uplink data transmission. This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) problem for multicell massive MIMO NOMA networks with wireless power transfer (WPT). To maximize the EE of the network, we propose a novel joint power, time, antenna selection, and subcarrier resource allocation scheme, which can properly alloc…
To support massive connectivity and boost spectral efficiency for internet of things (IoT), a downlink scheme combining virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. All the single-antenna IoT devices in each cluster cooperate with each other to establish a virtual MIMO entity, and multiple independent data streams are requested by each cluster. NOMA is employed to superimpose all the requested data streams, and each cluster leverages zero-forcing detection to de-multiplex the input data streams. Only statistical channel state information (…
Finite resolution analog beamforming (FRAB) has been recognized as an effective approach to reduce hardware costs in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and millimeter-wave networks. However, the use of FRAB means that the beamformers are not perfectly aligned with the users' channels and multiple users may be assigned similar or even identifical beamformers. This letter shows how non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can be used to exploit this feature of FRAB, where a single FRAB based beamformer is shared by multiple users. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to de…
The capacity of ideal MIMO channels has a high-SNR slope that equals the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas. This letter analyzes if this result holds when there are distortions from physical transceiver impairments. We prove analytically that such physical MIMO channels have a finite upper capacity limit, for any channel distribution and SNR. The high-SNR slope thus collapses to zero. This appears discouraging, but we prove the encouraging result that the relative capacity gain of employing MIMO is at least as large as with ideal transceivers.
In this paper, a unified linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) transceiver design framework is investigated, which is suitable for a wide range of wireless systems. The unified design is based on an elegant and powerful mathematical programming technology termed as quadratic matrix programming (QMP). Based on QMP it can be observed that for different wireless systems, there are certain common characteristics which can be exploited to design LMMSE transceivers e.g., the quadratic forms. It is also discovered that evolving from a point-to-point MIMO system to various advanced wireless systems…
This paper investigates the diversity order of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) based optimal transceivers in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems. While the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) analysis accurately predicts the behavior of the MMSE receiver for the positive multiplexing gain, it turned out that the performance is very unpredictable via DMT for the case of fixed rates, because MMSE strategies exhibit a complicated rate dependent behavior. In this paper, we establish the diversity-rate tradeoff performance of MIMO AF relaying syst…
In this paper, the performance of multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) is investigated when multiple users are grouped into a cluster. The superiority of MIMO-NOMA over MIMO orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-OMA) in terms of both sum channel capacity and ergodic sum capacity is proved analytically. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the more users are admitted to a cluster, the lower is the achieved sum rate, which illustrates the tradeoff between the sum rate and maximum number of admitted users. On this basis, a user admission scheme is proposed, which i…
We consider the combination of uplink code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We assume a setup in which the base station (BS) is capable of forming beams towards the RISs under line-of-sight conditions, and where each RIS is covering a cluster of users. In order to support multi-user transmissions within a cluster, code-domain NOMA via spreading is utilized. We investigate the optimization of the RIS phase-shifts such that a large number of users is supported. As it turns out, it is a …
We investigate the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems, where the total number of receive antennas at user equipment (UE) ends in a cell is more than the number of transmit antennas at the base station (BS). We first dynamically group the UE receive antennas into a number of clusters equal to or more than the number of BS transmit antennas. A single beamforming vector is then shared by all the receive antennas in a cluster. We propose a linear beamformin…
This paper considers a iterative Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) detection for the uplink Multiuser Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) systems with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA). The iterative LMMSE detection greatly reduces the system computational complexity by departing the overall processing into many low-complexity distributed calculations. However, it is generally considered to be sub-optimal and achieves relatively poor performance. In this paper, we firstly present the matching conditions and area theorems for the iterative detection of the MIMO-NOMA systems.…
This paper considers a low-complexity iterative Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) multi-user detector for the Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output system with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (MIMO-NOMA), where multiple single-antenna users simultaneously communicate with a multiple-antenna base station (BS). While LMMSE being a linear detector has a low complexity, it has suboptimal performance in multi-user detection scenario due to the mismatch between LMMSE detection and multi-user decoding. Therefore, in this paper, we provide the matching conditions between the detector and decoders f…
In this paper, we propose a wideband Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication system comprising of an FD MIMO node simultaneously communicating with two multi-antenna UpLink (UL) and DownLink (DL) nodes utilizing the same time and frequency resources. To suppress the strong Self-Interference (SI) signal due to simultaneous transmission and reception in FD MIMO systems, we propose a joint design of Analog and Digital (A/D) cancellation as well as transmit and receive beamforming capitalizing on baseband Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal modelin…
In overloaded Massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems, wherein the number $K$ of user equipments (UEs) exceeds the number of base station antennas $M$, it has recently been shown that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can increase the sum spectral efficiency. This paper aims at identifying cases where code-domain NOMA can improve the spectral efficiency of mMIMO in the classical regime where $K < M$. Novel spectral efficiency expressions are provided for the uplink and downlink with arbitrary spreading signatures and spatial correlation matrices. Particular attention is devoted to the planar arrays t…
Even if massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can theoretically bring huge benefits, it incurs substantial hardware complexity and expensive hardware costs. To address these issues while maintaining the system performance simultaneously, we develop an asymmetrical transceiver architecture for massive MIMO systems in this paper by releasing the shackles on radio frequency (RF) chains. Specifically, we first develop the architecture for the asymmetrical transceiver where the number of receive RF chains is different from that of the transmit RF chains. Due to this unequal number of RF cha…
Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeof…
Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We further improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit po…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recently considered in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems to further enhance the spectrum efficiency. In addition, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is a promising solution to maximize the energy efficiency. In this paper, for the first time, we investigate the integration of SWIPT in mmWave massive MIMO-NOMA systems. As mmWave massive MIMO will likely use hybrid precoding (HP) to significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains without an obvious performance loss, where the fully digita…
Linear transceiving schemes between the relay and the destination have recently attracted much interest in MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems due to low implementation complexity. In this paper, we provide comprehensive analysis on the diversity order of the linear zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) transceivers. Firstly, we obtain a compact closed-form expression for the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) through tight upper and lower bounds. While our DMT analysis accurately predicts the performance of the ZF transceivers, it is observed that the MMSE tran…
Multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) cellular network is promising for supporting massive connectivity. This paper exploits low-latency machine learning in the MIMO-NOMA uplink transmission environment, where a substantial amount of data must be uploaded from multiple data sources to a one-hop away edge server for machine learning. A delay-aware edge learning framework with the collaboration of data sources, the edge server, and the base station, referred to as DACEL, is proposed. Based on the delay analysis of DACEL, a NOMA channel allocation algorithm is …
Accurate and efficient estimation of the high dimensional channels is one of the critical challenges for practical applications of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In the context of hybrid analog-digital (HAD) transceivers, channel estimation becomes even more complicated due to information loss caused by limited radio-frequency chains. The conventional compressive sensing (CS) algorithms usually suffer from unsatisfactory performance and high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) based framework for uplink channel estimation in HAD massiv…
In this letter, we develop a low-complexity transceiver design, referred to as semi-random beam pairing (SRBP), for sparse multipath massive MIMO channels. By exploring a sparse representation of the MIMO channel in the virtual angular domain, we generate a set of transmit-receive beam pairs in a semi-random way to support the simultaneous transmission of multiple data streams. These data streams can be easily separated at the receiver via a successive interference cancelation (SIC) technique, and the power allocation among them are optimized based on the classical waterfilling principle. The …

A major limitation of heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) is the neglect of the additive residual transceiver hardware impairments (ARTHIs). The assumption of perfect hardware is quite strong and results in misleading conclusions. This paper models a general multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) HCN with cell association by incorporating the RTHIs. We derive the coverage probability and shed light on the impact of the ARTHIs, when various transmission methods are applied. As the hardware quality decreases, the coverage probability worsens. Especially, this effect is more severe as the trans…
