We analyze two conditionally solvable quantum-mechanical models: a one-dimensional sextic oscillator and a perturbed Coulomb problem. Both lead to a three-term recurrence relation for the expansion coefficients. We show diagrams of the distribution of their exact eigenvalues with the addition of accurate ones from variational calculations. We discuss the symmetry of such distributions. We also comment on the wrong interpretation of the exact eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by some researchers that has led to the prediction of allowed cyclotron frequencies and field intensities.
We apply the Frobenius (power-series) method to some simple exactly-solvable and conditionally-solvable quantum-mechanical models with supposed physical interest. We show that the supposedly exact solutions to radial eigenvalue equations derived in recent papers are not correct because they do not satisfy some well-known theorems. We also discuss the origin of the mistake by means of the approach indicated above.
Recently, based on a supersymmetric approach, new classes of conditionally exactly solvable problems have been found, which exhibit a symmetry structure characterized by non-linear algebras. In this paper the associated ``non-linear'' coherent states are constructed and some of their properties are discussed in detail.
A general procedure is presented to construct conditionally solvable (CES) potentials using the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The method is illustrated with potentials related to the harmonic oscillator problem.Besides recovering known results, new CES potentials are also obtained within the framework of this general approach. The conditions under which this method leads to CES potentials are also discussed.
A conditionally exactly solvable potential, the supersymmetric partner of the harmonic oscillator is investigated in the PT-symmetric setting. It is shown that a number of properties characterizing shape-invariant and Natanzon-class potentials generated by an imaginary coordinate shift $x-{\rm i}ε$ also hold for this potential outside the Natanzon class.
I discuss in this paper the behaviour of the solutions of the so-called q-hyperbolic potentials, i.e. P"oschl-Teller-like and conditionally solvable potentials, in terms of the path integral formalism. The differences in comparison to the usual P"oschl-Teller-like potentials are investigated, including the discrete energy spectra and the bound state wave-functions.
In the paper "Conditionally exactly soluble class of quantum potentials" by A. de Souza Dutra [Phys. Rev. A 47 (1993) R2435] the whole $s-$wave spectrum of bound states in potentials $V_1(r)=A/r+B/r^{1/2}+G_0/r^2$ with $G_0=-3\hbar/32μ$ and $V_2(r)=A r^{2/3}+B/r^{2/3}+g_0/r^2$ with $g_0=-5\hbar^2/72μ$ has been constructed in closed form. We show that both the result and the method of its derivation are not correct.
We present in this paper a rather general method for the construction of so-called conditionally exactly solvable potentials. This method is based on algebraic tools known from supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Various families of one-dimensional potentials are constructed whose corresponding Schrödinger eigenvalue problem can be solved exactly under certain conditions of the potential parameters. Examples of quantum systems on the real line, the half line as well as on some finite interval are studied in detail.
We present a conditionally exactly solvable singular potential for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation which involves the exactly solvable inverse square root potential. Each of the two fundamental solutions that compose the general solution of the problem is given by a linear combination with non-constant coefficients of two confluent hypergeometric functions. Discussing the bound-state wave functions vanishing both at infinity and in the origin, we derive the exact equation for the energy spectrum which is written using two Hermite functions of non-integer order. In specific auxiliary v…
We comment that the conditionally exactly solvable potential of Dutt et al. and the exactly solvable potential from which it is derived form a dual system.
Using supersymmetric quantum mechanics we develop a new method for constructing quasi-exactly solvable (QES) potentials with two known eigenstates. This method is extended for constructing conditionally-exactly solvable potentials (CES). The considered QES potentials at certain values of parameters become exactly solvable and can be treated as CES ones.
We evaluate Shannon entropy for the position and momentum eigenstates of some conditionally exactly solvable potentials which are isospectral to harmonic oscillator and whose solutions are given in terms of exceptional orthogonal polynomials. The Bialynicki-Birula-Mycielski (BBM) inequality has also been tested for a number of states.
We solve an eigenvalue equation that appears in several papers about a wide range of physical problems. The Frobenius method leads to a three-term recurrence relation for the coefficients of the power series that, under suitable truncation, yields exact analytical eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for particular values of a model parameter. From these solutions some researchers have derived a variety of predictions like allowed angular frequencies, allowed field intensities and the like. We also solve the eigenvalue equation numerically by means of the variational Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare…
Based on a method that produces the solutions to the Schrodinger equations of partner potentials, we give two conditionally exactly solvable partner potentials of exponential type defined on the half line. These potentials are multiplicative shape invariant and each of their linearly independent solution includes a sum of two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate the scattering amplitudes and study some of their properties.
We give two conditionally exactly solvable inverse power law potentials whose linearly independent solutions include a sum of two confluent hypergeometric functions. We notice that they are partner potentials and multiplicative shape invariant. The method used to find the solutions works with the two Schrodinger equations of the partner potentials. Furthermore we study some of the properties of these potentials.
Motivated by the interest in non-relativistic quantum mechanics for determining exact solutions to the Schrodinger equation we give two potentials that are conditionally exactly solvable. The two potentials are partner potentials and we obtain that each linearly independent solution of the Schrodinger equation includes two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate their reflection and transmission amplitudes. Finally we discuss some additional properties of these potentials.
In a previous paper [{\it J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 40} (2007) 11105], we constructed a class of coherent states for a polynomially deformed $su(2)$ algebra. In this paper, we first prepare the discrete representations of the nonlinearly deformed $su(1,1)$ algebra. Then we extend the previous procedure to construct a discrete class of coherent states for a polynomial su(1,1) algebra which contains the Barut-Girardello set and the Perelomov set of the SU(1,1) coherent states as special cases. We also construct coherent states for the cubic algebra related to the conditionally solvable radi…
The SWKB quantization condition is an exact quantization condition for the conventional shape-invariant potentials. On the other hand, this condition equation does not hold for other known solvable systems. The origin of the (non-)exactness is understood in the context of the quantum Hamilton--Jacobi formalism. First, we confirm the statement and show inexplicit properties numerically for the case of the conditionally exactly solvable systems by Junker and Roy. The SWKB condition breaks for this case, but the condition equation is restored within a certain degree of accuracy. We propose a nove…
A huge family of solvable potentials can be generated by systematically exploiting the factorization (Darboux) method. Starting from the free case, a large class of the known solvable families is thus reproduced, together with new ones. We explicitly find and solve several new singular potentials obtained by iteration from the V=0 case; some of them have an E=0 bound state and constant phase shift without being explicitly scale invariant. The new potentials are rational functions, and can be related to rational solutions of the KdV family.
We introduce the third independent exactly solvable hypergeometric potential, after the Eckart and the Pöschl-Teller potentials, which is proportional to an energy-independent parameter and has a shape that is independent of this parameter. The general solution of the Schrödinger equation for this potential is written through fundamental solutions each of which presents an irreducible combination of two Gauss hypergeometric functions. The potential is an asymmetric step-barrier with variable height and steepness. Discussing the transmission above such a barrier, we derive a compact formula for…
Using algebraic tools of supersymmetric quantum mechanics we construct classes of conditionally exactly solvable potentials being the supersymmetric partners of the linear or radial harmonic oscillator. With the help of the raising and lowering operators of these harmonic oscillators and the SUSY operators we construct ladder operators for these new conditionally solvable systems. It is found that these ladder operators together with the Hamilton operator form a non-linear algebra which is of quadratic and cubic type for the SUSY partners of the linear and radial harmonic oscillator, respectiv…
We discuss the classical and quantum mechanical evolution of systems described by a Hamiltonian that is a function of a solvable one, both classically and quantum mechanically. The case in which the solvable Hamiltonian corresponds to the harmonic oscillator is emphasized. We show that, in spite of the similarities at the classical level, the quantum evolution is very different. In particular, this difference is important in constructing coherent states, which is impossible in most cases. The class of Hamiltonians we consider is interesting due to its pedagogical value and its applicability to…
We analyze recent results for a harmonic oscillator in an environment with a pointlike defect. We show that the allowed oscillator frequencies predicted by the authors stem from a misinterpretation of the exact solutions of a conditionally solvable eigenvalue equation. Also the exact eigenvalues derived by those authors are meaningless because they belong to different quantum-mechanical models.
We propose two improvements to the well-known power series method for confined one-dimensional quantum-mechanical problems. They consist of the addition of a variational step were the energy plays the role of a variational parameter. We compare the rate of convergence of the three methods on an exactly-solvable model. We also outline possible generalizations of the approaches to more complex problems.
Very first time Elzaki transform is used in non relativistic quantum mechanics to solve $N$-dimensional Schrödinger equation in a closed form for different solvable potential models. A universal transformation scheme is introduced and a formula based approach is developed which shows how to apply Elzaki transform to differential equation with non-constant coefficients that generally appear in solving quantum mechanical initial value problems specially for multidimensional Schrödinger equation.
In exactly solvable quantum-mechanical systems, ladder and intertwining operators play a central role because, if they are found, the energy spectra can be obtained algebraically. In this paper, we propose the spectral intertwining relation as a unified relation of ladder and intertwining operators in a way that can depend on the energy eigenvalues. It is shown that the spectral intertwining relations can connect eigenfunctions of different energy eigenvalues belonging to two different Hamiltonians, which cannot be obtained by previously known structures such as shape invariance. As an applica…
Recently, a class of PT-invariant quantum mechanical models described by the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H=p^2+x^2(ix)^ε$ was studied. It was found that the energy levels for this theory are real for all $ε\geq0$. Here, the limit as $ε\to\infty$ is examined. It is shown that in this limit, the theory becomes exactly solvable. A generalization of this Hamiltonian, $H=p^2+x^{2M}(ix)^ε$ (M=1,2,3,...) is also studied, and this PT-symmetric Hamiltonian becomes exactly solvable in the large-εlimit as well. In effect, what is obtained in each case is a complex analog of the Hamiltonian for the square …
We analyze some solvable models of a quantum mechanical system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is not factorized. We apply Nakajima-Zwanzig's projection method by choosing a reference state of the reservoir endowed with the mixing property. In van Hove's limit, the dynamics is described in terms of a master equation. We observe that Markovianity becomes a valid approximation for timescales that depend both on the form factors of the interaction and on the observables of the reservoir that can be measured.
We derive an exact solution of an explicitly time-dependent multichannel model of quantum mechanical nonadiabatic transitions. In the limit N >>1, where N is the number of states, we find that the survival probability of the initially populated state remains finite despite an almost arbitrary choice of a large number of parameters. This observation proves that quantum mechanical nonadiabatic transitions among a large number of states can effectively keep memory about the initial state of the system. This property can lead to a strongly non-ergodic behavior even in the thermodynamic limit of so…
A general algebraic procedure for constructing coherent states of a wide class of exactly solvable potentials e.g., Morse and P{ö}schl-Teller, is given. The method, {\it a priori}, is potential independent and connects with earlier developed ones, including the oscillator based approaches for coherent states and their generalizations. This approach can be straightforwardly extended to construct more general coherent states for the quantum mechanical potential problems, like the nonlinear coherent states for the oscillators. The time evolution properties of some of these coherent states, show r…
A new approach in solution of simple quantum mechanical problems in deformed space with minimal length is presented. We propose the generalization of Schroëdinger equation in momentum representation on the case of deformed Heisenberg algebra with minimal length. Assuming that the kernel of potential energy operator do not change in the case of deformation, we obtain exact solution of eigenproblem of a particle in delta potential as well as double delta potential. Particle in Coulomb like potential is revisited and the problem of inversibility and hermicity of inverse coordinate operator is sol…
A supersymmetric method for the construction of so-called conditionally exactly solvable quantum systems is reviewed and extended to classical stochastic dynamical systems characterized by a Fokker-Planck equation with drift. A class of drift-potentials on the real line as well as on the half line is constructed for which the associated Fokker-Planck equation can be solved exactly. Explicit drift potentials, which describe mono-, bi-, meta-or unstable systems, are constructed and their decay rates and modes are given in closed form.
We study the scattering of two-level atoms at narrow laser fields, modeled by a $δ$-shape intensity profile. The unique properties of these potentials allow us to give simple analytic solutions for one or two field zones. Several applications are studied: a single $δ$-laser may serve as a detector model for atom detection and arrival-time measurements, either by means of fluorescence or variations in occupation probabilities. We show that, in principle, this ideal detector can measure the particle density, the quantum mechanical flux, arrival time distributions or local kinetic energy densitie…
This study is focused on the quantum dynamics of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center coupled to a nonlinear, periodically driven mechanical oscillator. For a continuous periodic driving that depends on the position of the oscillator, the mechanical motion is described by Mathieu elliptic functions. This solution is employed to study the dynamics of the quantum spin system including environmental effects and to evaluate the purity and the von Neumann entropy of the NV-spin. The unitary generation of coherence is addressed. We observe that the production of coherence through a unitary transformation …
We propose a simple quantum mechanical model describing the time dependent diffusion current between two fermion reservoirs that were initially disconnected and characterized by different densities or chemical potentials. The exact, analytical solution of the model yields the transient behavior of the coupled fermion systems evolving to a final steady state, whereas the long-time behavior is determined by a power law rather than by exponential decay. Similar results are obtained for the entropy production which is proportional to the diffusion current.
We study theoretically a three-mode optomechanical system where two mechanical oscillators are coupled to a single cavity mode. By using two-tone (i.e. amplitude-modulated) driving of the cavity, it is possible to couple the cavity to a single collective quadrature of the mechanical oscillators. In such a way, a back-action-evading measurement of the collective mechanical quadrature is possible. We discuss how this can allow one to measure both quadratures of a mechanical force beyond the full quantum limit, paying close attention to the role of dissipation and experimental imperfections. We a…
We emphasize intertwining relations as a universal tool in constructing one-dimensional quasi-exactly solvable operators and offer their possible generalization to the multidimensional case. Considered examples include all quasi-exactly solvable operators with invariant subspaces of monomials. We show that the simplest case of generalized intertwining relations allows to naturally relate quasi-exactly solvable operators with two invariant monomial subspaces to a nonlinear parasupersymmetry of second order. Quantum-mechanical systems with linear and nonlinear supersymmetry are discussed from th…
Morse potential $V_M(x)= g^2\exp (2x)-g(2h+1)\exp(x)$ is defined on the full line, $-\infty<x<\infty$ and it defines an exactly solvable 1-d quantum mechanical system with finitely many discrete eigenstates. By taking its right half $0\le x<\infty$ and glueing it with the left half of its mirror image $V_M(-x)$, $-\infty<x\le0$, the symmetric Morse potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)-g(2h+1)\exp(|x|)$ is obtained. The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The e…
New solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical scattering problems are presented. They are obtained from known solvable potentials by multiple Darboux transformations in terms of virtual and pseudo virtual wavefunctions. The same method applied to confining potentials, e.g. Pöschl-Teller and the radial oscillator potentials, has generated the {\em multi-indexed Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials}. Simple multi-indexed formulas are derived for the transmission and reflection amplitudes of several solvable potentials.
We analyze perturbative dynamics of a composite system consisting of a quantum mechanical system and an environment by the renormalization group (RG) method. The solution obtained from the RG method has no secular terms and approximates the exact solution for a long time interval. Moreover, the RG method causes a reduction of the dynamics of the composite system under some assumptions. We show that this reduced dynamics is closely related to a quantum master equation for the quantum mechanical system. Then, we compare this dynamics with the exact dynamics in an exactly solvable spin-boson mode…
Several explicit examples of multi-particle quasi exactly solvable `discrete' quantum mechanical Hamiltonians are derived by deforming the well-known exactly solvable multi-particle Hamiltonians, the Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen systems. These are difference analogues of the quasi exactly solvable multi-particle systems, the quantum Inozemtsev systems obtained by deforming the well-known exactly solvable Calogero-Sutherland systems. They have a finite number of exactly calculable eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. This paper is a multi-particle extension of the recent paper by one of the auth…
We present a protocol for generating multipartite quantum correlations across a quantum network with a continuous-variable architecture. An arbitrary number of users possess two-mode entangled states, keeping one mode while sending the other to a central relay. Here a suitable multipartite Bell detection is performed which conditionally generates a cluster state on the retained modes. This cluster state can be suitably manipulated by the parties and used for tasks of quantum communication in a fully optical scenario. More interestingly, the protocol can be used to create a purely-mechanical cl…
We explore the possibility of modifying the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants developed originally to find exact solutions for time-dependent quantum mechanical systems for the situation in which an exact invariant can be constructed, but the subsequently resulting time-independent eigenvalue system is not solvable exactly. We propose to carry out this step in an approximate fashion, such as employing standard time-independent perturbation theory or the WKB approximation, and subsequently feeding the resulting approximated expressions back into the time-dependent scheme. We illustrate the …
The solvable quantum mechanical model for the relativistic two-body system composed of spin-1/2 and spin-0 particles is constructed. The model includes the oscillator-type interaction through a combination of Lorentz-vector and -tensor potentials. The analytical expressions for the wave functions and the order of the energy levels are discussed.
We put forward and prove a simple theorem stating that the eigenvalues of a tridiagonal matrix change their sign (as a set), once the signs of the diagonal elements of the matrix are changed. We also provide an example of application of this theorem in quantum physics. Specifically, we introduce the notion of duality and self-duality for a sextic-polynomial quasi-exactly-solvable potential, and demonstrate that the algebraic parts of the spectrum of the dual potentials have signs opposite to one another (as sets). Our Theorem furnishes an elegant one-line proof of this statement. In addition, …
We demonstrate that certain class of infinite sums can be calculated analytically starting from a specific quantum mechanical problem and using principles of quantum mechanics. For simplicity we illustrate the method by exploring the problem of a particle in a box. Twofold calculation of the mean value of energy for the polynomial wave function inside the well yields even argument $p$ ($p>2$) of Riemann zeta and related functions. This method can be applied to a wide class of exactly solvable quantum mechanical problems which may lead to different infinite sums. Besides, the analysis performed…
We describe an optomechanical system in which the mean phonon number of a single mechanical mode conditionally displaces the amplitude of the optical field. Using homodyne detection of the output field we establish the conditions under which phonon number quantum jumps can be inferred from the measurement record: both the cavity damping rate and the measurement rate of the phonon number must be much greater than the thermalization rate of the mechanical mode. We present simulations of the conditional dynamics of the measured system using the stochastic master equation. In the good-measurement …
We formulate N-fold supersymmetry in quantum mechanical matrix models. As an example, we construct general two-by-two Hermitian matrix 2-fold supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. We find that there are two inequivalent such systems, both of which are characterized by two arbitrary scalar functions, and one of which does not reduce to the scalar system. The obtained systems are all weakly quasi-solvable.
The supersymmetric WKB (SWKB) condition is supposed to be exact for all known exactly solvable quantum mechanical systems with the shape invariance. Recently, it was claimed that the SWKB condition was not exact for the extended radial oscillator, whose eigenfunctions consisted of the the exceptional orthogonal polynomial, even the system possesses the shapeinvariance. In this paper, we examine the SWKB condition for the two novel classes of exactly solvable systems: one has the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as the main parts of the eigenfunctions, and the other has the Krein--A…
Several kinds of q-orthogonal polynomials with |q|=1 are constructed as the main parts of the eigenfunctions of new solvable discrete quantum mechanical systems. Their orthogonality weight functions consist of quantum dilogarithm functions, which are a natural extension of the Euler gamma functions and the q-gamma functions (q-shifted factorials). The dimensions of the orthogonal spaces are finite. These q-orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and their certain limit forms.
Quantum mechanical systems exhibit an inherently probabilistic nature upon measurement. Using a quantum noise model to describe the stochastic evolution of the open quantum system and working in parallel with classical indeterministic control theory, we present the theory of nonlinear optimal quantum feedback control. The resulting quantum Bellman equation is then applied to the explicitly solvable quantum linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) problem which emphasizes many similarities with the corresponding classical control problem.
The Yukawa interaction is considered in 0+1 dimensions as a pedagogical example to illustrate quantum field theory methods. From the quantum mechanical point of view the system is trivially exactly solvable, but this can be difficult to see from the path integral perspective. It is shown how despite initial appearances the perturbation series in terms of Feynman diagrams is consistent with the quantum mechanical picture for finite temperature.
