We study the ramified Prym map $\mathcal P_{g,r} \longrightarrow \mathcal A_{g-1+\frac r2}^δ$ which assigns to a ramified double cover of a smooth irreducible curve of genus $g$ ramified in $r$ points the Prym variety of the covering. We focus on the six cases where the dimension of the source is strictly greater than the dimension of the target giving a geometric description of the generic fibre. We also give an explicit example of a totally geodesic curve which is an irreducible component of a fibre of the Prym map ${\mathcal P}_{1,2}$.
We prove that the ramified Prym map $\mathcal P_{g, r}$ which sends a covering $π:D\longrightarrow C$ ramified in $r$ points to the Prym variety $P(π):=\text{Ker}(\text{Nm}_π)$ is an embedding for all $r\ge 6$ and for all $g(C)>0$. Moreover, by studying the restriction to the locus of coverings of hyperelliptic curves, we show that $\mathcal P_{g, 2}$ and $\mathcal P_{g, 4}$ have positive dimensional fibers.
We study Shimura curves of PEL type in the space of polarised abelian varieties $A^δ_p$ generically contained in the ramified Prym locus. We generalise to ramified double covers, the construction done in [10] in the unramified case and in the case of two ramification points. Namely, we construct families of double covers which are compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve. We only consider the case of one-dimensional families and where the quotient of the base curve by the group is ${\mathbb P}^1$. Using computer algebra we obtain 184 Shimura curves contained in the (ramified) Pry…
We study Shimura (special) subvarieties in the moduli space $A_{p,D}$ of complex abelian varieties of dimension $p$ and polarization type $D$. These subvarieties arise from families of covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve such that the quotient of the base curve by the group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a special subvariety and, using computer algebra, obtain 210 Shimura subvarieties contained in the Prym locus.
In this paper we prove that the Prym map, from the space of double coverings of a curve of genus g with r branch points to the moduli space of abelian varieties, is generically injective if r>6 and g>1, r=6 and g>2, r=4 and g>4, r=2 and g>5. We also show that a very generic Prym variety of dimension at least 4 is not isogenous to a Jacobian.
In this paper we study the second fundamental form of the Prym map $P_{g,r}: R_{g,r} \rightarrow {\mathcal A}^δ_{g-1+r}$ in the ramified case $r>0$. We give an expression of it in terms of the second fundamental form of the Torelli map of the covering curves. We use this expression to give an upper bound for the dimension of a germ of a totally geodesic submanifold, and hence of a Shimura subvariety of ${\mathcal A}^δ_{g-1+r}$, contained in the Prym locus.
In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield…
We study Shimura curves of PEL type in $\mathsf{A}_g$ generically contained in the Prym locus. We study both the unramified Prym locus, obtained using étale double covers, and the ramified Prym locus, corresponding to double covers ramified at two points. In both cases we consider the family of all double covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve. We restrict to the case where the family is 1-dimensional and the quotient of the base curve by the group is $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a simple criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a Shimura curve. Usin…
In this paper we consider the Prym map for double coverings of curves of genus $g$ ramified at $r>0$ points. That is, the map associating to a double ramified covering its Prym variety. The generic Torelli theorem states that the Prym map is generically injective as soon as the dimension of the space of coverings is less or equal to the dimension of the space of polarized abelian varieties. We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map in the cases of double coverings of curves with: (a) $g=2$, $r=6$, and (b) $g= 5$, $r=2$. In the first case the proof is constructive and can be extended to …
In this paper we give a bound on the dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which is contained in the Prym locus of a (possibly) ramified double cover. This improves the already known bounds. The idea is to adapt the techniques introduced by the authors in collaboration with A. Ghigi and G. P. Pirola for the Torelli map to the case of the Prym maps of (ramified) double covers.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
The Prym map of type (g,n,r) associates to every cyclic covering of degree n of a curve of genus g, ramified at a reduced divisor of degree r, the corresponding Prym variety. We show that the corresponding map of moduli spaces is generically finite in most cases. From this we deduce the dimension of the image of the Prym map.
To every double cover ramified in two points of a general trigonal curve of genus g, one can associate an étale double cover of a tetragonal curve of genus g+1. We show that the corresponding Prym varieties are canonically isomorphic as principally polarized abelian varieties.
We prove that the moduli space of double covers ramified at two points $\mathcal{R}_{g,2}$ is uniruled for $3\leq g\leq 6$ and of general type for $g\geq 16$. Furthermore, we consider Prym-canonical divisorial strata in the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g$ parametrizing $n$-pointed Prym curves, and we compute their classes in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g)$.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero containing a primitive $n$-th root of unity. Let $C^0_n$ be a singular plane curve of degree $n$ over $k$ admitting an order $n$ automorphism, $n$ nodes as the singularities, and $C_n$ be its normalization. In this paper we study the factors of Prym variety $\mbox{Prym}(\widetilde{C}_n/C_n)$ associated to the double cover $\widetilde{C}_n$ of $C_n$ exactly ramified at the points obtained by the blow-up of the singularities. We provide explicit models of some algebraic curves related to the construction of $\mbox{Prym}(\widetilde{C}_n/C_n)$ as a Prym va…
Let $ϕ:\,X\rightarrow Y$ be a (possibly ramified) cover between two algebraic curves of positive genus. We develop tools that may identify the Prym variety of $ϕ$, up to isogeny, as the Jacobian of a quotient curve $C$ in the Galois closure of the composition of $ϕ$ with a well-chosen map $Y\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$. This method allows us to recover all previously obtained descriptions of a Prym variety in terms of a Jacobian that are known to us, besides yielding new applications. We also find algebraic equations for some of these new cases, including one where $X$ has genus $3$, $Y$ has genu…
The classical definition of Prym varieties deals with the unramified covers of curves. The aim of the present paper is to give explicit algebraic descriptions of the Prym varieties associated to ramified double covers of algebraic curves. We make a careful study of the connection with the concept of algebraic completely integrable systems and we apply the methods to some problems of Mathematical Physics.
It is known that the Jacobian of an algebraic curve which is a 2-fold covering of a hyperelliptic curve ramified at two points contains a hyperelliptic Prym variety. Its explicit algebraic description is applied to some of the integrable Henon-Heiles systems with a non-polynomial potential. Namely, we identify the generic complex invariant manifolds of the systems as a hyperelliptic Prym subvariety of the Jacobian of the spectral curve of the corresponding Lax representation. The exact discretization of the system is described as a translation on the Prym variety.
We study the Prym varieties arising from étale cyclic coverings of degree 7 over a curve of genus 2. These Prym varieties are products of Jacobians JY x JY of genus 3 curves Y with polarization type D=(1,1,1,1,1,7). We describe the fibers of the Prym map between the moduli space of such coverings and the moduli space of abelian sixfolds with polarization type D, admitting an automorphism of order 7.
In this work we use the bigonal, trigonal and tetragonal constructions to describe the fibers of the Prym map P : R_{g} ---->A_{g-1} inthe cases when it is dominant, i.e. for g < 7. The most interesting cases are g = 5, where the fiber is a double cover of the Fano surface of lines on a cubic threefold, and g=6, where the map is generically finite (of degree 27) with Galois group WE_{6}, so that the general fiber has the structure of the 27 lines on a cubic surface. For g > 6, the map is known to be generically injective. The tetragonal construction gives many counterexamples to injectivity, a…
This thesis, done under the supervision of Filippo Viviani, is devoted to the study of the spectral correspondence for $G$-Higgs pairs, in the case of $G=SL(r,\mathbb{C})$, $PGL(r, \mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, $GSp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, $PSp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, over any fiber. In the first chapter we introduce the compactified Jacobian stack parametrizing torsion-free rank-1 sheaves over a (possibly reducible, non reduced) projective curve and we describe the spectral correspondence for Higgs pairs in terms of the compactified Jacobian. In the second chapter, we study the notion of direct and in…
We introduce two algebraic completely integrable analogues of the Mumford systems which we call hyperelliptic Prym systems, because every hyperelliptic Prym variety appears as a fiber of their momentum map. As an application we show that the generic fiber of the momentum map of the periodic Volterra lattice $$\dot a_i=a_i(a_{i-1}-a_{i+1}), \qquad i=1,...,n,\quad a_{n+1}=a_1,$$ is an affine part of a hyperelliptic Prym variety, obtained by removing $n$ translates of the theta divisor, and we conclude that this integrable system is algebraic completely integrable.
We are interested in studying the variation of the Hitchin fibration in moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles, under the action of a ramified covering. Given a degree two map $π$ : Y $\rightarrow$ X between compact Riemann surfaces, we may pull back a Higgs bundle from X to Y , the lifted Higgs bundle tends to have many apparent singularities, then we perform a suitable birational transformation in order to eliminate them. This correspondence preserves the Hitchin fibrations and then its restriction to a general fiber gives a map between Abelian varieties. The aim of this paper is to descri…
We study the moduli space of pairs consisting of a smooth cubic surface and a smooth hyperplane section, via a Hodge theoretic period map due to Laza, Pearlstein, and the second named author. The construction associates to such a pair a so-called Eckardt cubic threefold, admitting an involution, and the period map sends the pair to the anti-invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian of this cubic threefold, with respect to this involution. Our main result is that the global Torelli theorem holds for this period map; i.e., the period map is injective. To prove the result, we describe the anti-…
A correspondence between 1) rank 2 completely integrable systems of Jacobians of algebraic curves and 2) (holomorphically) symplectic surfaces was established in a previous paper by the first author. A more general abelian variety that occurs as a Liouville torus of integrable systems is a prym variety associated to a triple (S,W,V) consisting of a curve S, a finite group W of automorphisms of S and an integral representation V. Often W is a Weyl group of a reductive group and V is the root lattice. We establish an analogous correspondence between: i) Rank 2 integrable systems whose Liouville …
In this short notes, we prove a stronger version of Theorem 0.6 in our previous paper arXiv:1709.01485: Given a smooth log scheme $(\mathcal{X} \supset \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)}$, each stable twisted $f$-periodic logarithmic Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ over the closed fiber $(X \supset D)_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ will correspond to a $\mathrm{PGL}_r(\mathbb{F}_{p^f})$-crystalline representation of $π_1((\mathcal{X} \setminus \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)[\frac{1}{p}]})$ such that its restriction to the geometric fundamental group is absolutely irreducible.
Let K be a complete field of unequal characteristics $(0,p)$. The aim of this paper is to describe the the semi-stable models for covers $\bold P^1_K@>>>\bold P^1_K$ of degree p, unramified outside $r\leq p$ points and totally ramified above one of them, under the assumption that the ramified locus has a particular reduction type (which always occurs if $r\leq4$). We are principally concerned with the minimal semi-stable models which separate the ramified fibers.
We study a trace formula for tamely ramified abelian varieties $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, which expresses the Euler characteristic of the special fiber of the Néron model of $A$ in terms of the Galois action on the $\ell$-adic cohomology of $A$. If $A$ has purely additive reduction, the trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation for the number of connected components of the special fiber of the Néron model.

We study group actions on regular models of curves. If $X$ is a smooth curve defined over the fraction field $K$ of a complete d.v.r. $R$, every tamely ramified extension $K'/K$ with Galois group $G$ induces a $G$-action on $X_{K'}$. In this paper we study the extension of this $G$-action to certain regular models of $X_{K'}$. In particular, we obtain a formula for the Brauer trace of the endomorphism induced by a group element on the alternating sum of the cohomology groups of the structure sheaf of the special fiber of such a regular model. Inspired by this global study, we also consider sim…
Given an integral p-adic variety, we observe that if the integral Hodge--de Rham spectral sequence behaves nicely, then the special fiber knows the Hodge numbers of the generic fiber. Applying recent advancements of integral p-adic Hodge theory, we show that such a nice behavior is guaranteed if the p-adic variety can be lifted to an analogue of second Witt vectors and satisfies some bound on dimension and ramification index. This is a (ramified) mixed characteristic analogue of results due to Deligne--Illusie and Fontaine--Messing. Lastly, we discuss an example illustrating the necessity of t…
For any nonconstant f,g in C(x) such that the numerator H(x,y) of f(x)-g(y) is irreducible, we compute the genus of the normalization of the curve H(x,y)=0. We also prove an analogous formula in arbitrary characteristic when f and g have no common wildly ramified branch points, and generalize to (possibly reducible) fiber products of nonconstant morphisms of curves f:A-->D and g:B-->D.
