Unconventional Weyl points (WPs), carrying topological charge 2 or higher, possess interesting properties different from ordinary charge-1 WPs, including multiple Fermi arcs that stretch over a large portion of the Brillouin zone. Thus far, such WPs have been observed in chiral materials and acoustic metamaterials, but there has been no clean demonstration in photonics in which the unconventional photonic WPs are separated from trivial bands. We experimentally realize an ideal symmetry-protected photonic charge-2 WP in a three-dimensional topological chiral microwave metamaterial. We use field mapping to directly observe the projected bulk dispersion, as well as the two long surface arcs that form a noncontractible loop wrapping around the surface Brillouin zone. The surface states span a record-wide frequency window of around 22.7% relative bandwidth. We demonstrate that the surface states exhibit a novel topological self-collimation property and are robust against disorder. This work provides an ideal photonic platform for exploring fundamental physics and applications of unconventional WPs.
Scatterings and transport in Weyl semimetals have caught growing attention in condensed matter physics, with observables including chiral zero modes and the associated magnetoresistance and chiral magnetic effects. Measurement of electrical conductance is usually performed in these studies, which, however, cannot resolve the momentum of electrons, preventing direct observation of the phase singularities in scattering matrix associated with Weyl point. Here we experimentally demonstrate a helical phase distribution in the angle (momentum) resolved scattering matrix of electromagnetic waves in a…
Weyl semimetals are recently discovered materials supporting emergent relativistic fermions in the vicinity of band-crossing points known as Weyl nodes. The positions of the nodes and the low-energy spectrum depend sensitively on the time-reversal (TR) and inversion (I) symmetry breaking in the system. We introduce the concept of Weyl metamaterials where the particles experience a 3d curved geometry and gauge fields emerging from smooth spatially varying TR and I breaking fields. The Weyl metamaterials can be fabricated from semimetal or insulator parent states where the geometry can be tuned,…
Quantum Hall physics has been theoretically predicted in 4-dimensions and higher. In hypothetical 2n-dimensions, the topological characters of both the bulk and the boundary are manifested as quantized non-linear transport coefficients that connect, respectively, to the n-th Chern number of the bulk gap projection and to the n-th winding number of the Weyl spectral singularities on the (2n-1)-dimensional boundaries. Here, we introduce the concept of phason engineering in metamaterials and use it as a vehicle to access and apply the quantum Hall physics in arbitrary dimensions. Using these spec…
We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us…
We analyze the effect of the tilt on the transverse thermoelectric coefficient of Weyl semimetals in the \emph{conformal} limit, i.e., zero temperature and zero chemical potential. Using the Kubo formalism, we find a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermoelectric conductivity as a function of the tilt perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a linear behavior when the tilt is aligned to the magnetic field. An ``axial Nernst" current (chiral currents counter propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient) is generated in inversion symmetric Weyl materials when the t…
Depending on the geometry of their Fermi surfaces, Weyl semimetals and their analogues in classical systems have been classified into two types. In type I Weyl semimetals (WSMs), the cone-like spectrum at the Weyl point (WP) is not tilted, leading to a point-like closed Fermi surface. In type II WSMs, on the contrary, the energy spectrum around the WP is strongly tilted such that the Fermi surface transforms from a point into an open surface. Here, we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, a new type of (classical) Weyl semimetal whose Fermi surface is neither a point nor a surfac…
The study of spin-orbit coupling of photons has attracted much attention in recent years, and leads to many potential applications in optics. In the recently discovered metamaterial -- photonic crystals with Weyl points, the pseudospin-orbit coupling of photons bears a resemblance to the spin-orbit coupling. We study the pseudospin Hall effect of light in such metamaterials and find that during total reflection, the light beam experiences a transverse shift that is proportional to the pseudospin (or the monopole charge) of the Weyl point. As the spin Hall effect has inspired many works to expl…
Disordered non-interacting systems in sufficiently high dimensions have been predicted to display a non-Anderson disorder-driven transition that manifests itself in the critical behaviour of the density of states and other physical observables. Recently the critical properties of this transition have been extensively studied for the specific case of Weyl semimetals by means of numerical and renormalisation-group approaches. Despite this, the values of the critical exponents at such a transition in a Weyl semimetal are currently under debate. We present an independent calculation of the critica…
We study light propagation in a neutral Weyl semimetal with the Fermi level lying at the Weyl nodes in the weak self-interacting regime. The nontrivial topology induces a screening effect in one of the two transverse gauge fields, for which we find two branches of attenuated collective excitations. In addition to the known topologically gaped photon mode, a novel massless and slightly damped excitation appears. Strikingly, at low energies this new excitation has a linear dispersion and it propagates with the same velocity than the electrons, while at energies well above the electron-hole conti…
We present the concept of a feedback-based topological acoustic metamaterial as a tool for realizing autonomous and active guiding of sound beams along arbitrary curved paths in free two-dimensional space. The metamaterial building blocks are acoustic transducers, embedded in a slab waveguide. The transducers generate a desired dispersion profile in closed-loop by processing real-time pressure field measurements through preprogrammed controllers. In particular, the metamaterial can be programmed to exhibit analogies of quantum topological wave phenomena, which enables unconventional and except…
WTe$_2$ is one of a series of recently discovered high mobility semimetals, some of whose properties are characteristic of topological Dirac or Weyl metals. One of its most interesting properties is the unsaturated giant magnetoresistance that it exhibits at low temperatures. An important question is the degree to which this property can be ascribed to a conventional semi-metallic model in which a highly compensated, high mobility metal exhibits large magnetoresistance. Here we show that the longitudinal thermopower (Seebeck effect) of semi-metallic WTe$_2$ exfoliated flakes exhibits periodic …
An outstanding feature of topological quantum materials is their novel spin topology in the electronic band structures with an expected large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. Here, we report a charge current-induced spin polarization in the type-II Weyl semimetal candidate WTe2 and efficient spin injection and detection in a graphene channel up to room temperature. Contrary to the conventional spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein effects, our measurements indicate an unconventional charge-to-spin conversion in WTe2, which is primarily forbidden by the crystal symmetry of the system. Such a larg…
Topological phases of matter have been extensively investigated in solid state materials and classical wave systems with integer dimensions. However, topological states in non-integer dimensions remain largely unexplored. Fractals, being nearly the same at different scales, are one of the intriguing complex geometries with non-integer dimensions. Here, we demonstrate acoustic Sierpiński fractal topological insulators with unconventional higher-order topological phenomena via consistent theory and experiments. We discover abundant topological edge and corner states emerging in our acoustic syst…
Considering a non-centrosymmetric, non-magnetic double Weyl semimetal (WSM) SrSi$_2$, we investigate the electron and hole pockets in bulk Fermi surface behavior that enables us to characterize the material as a type-I WSM. We study the structural handedness of the material and correlate it with the distinct surface Fermi surface at two opposite surfaces following an energy evolution. The Fermi arc singlet becomes doublet with the onset of spin orbit coupling that is in accordance with the topological charge of the Weyl Nodes (WNs). A finite energy separation between WNs of opposite chirality …
In quantum field theory, we learn that fermions come in three varieties: Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac. Here we show that in solid state systems this classification is incomplete and find several additional types of crystal symmetry-protected free fermionic excitations . We exhaustively classify linear and quadratic 3-, 6- and 8- band crossings stabilized by space group symmetries in solid state systems with spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry. Several distinct types of fermions arise, differentiated by their degeneracies at and along high symmetry points, lines, and surfaces. Some nota…
Confinement of electromagnetic fields at the subwavelength scale via metamaterial paradigms is an established method to engineer light-matter interaction in most common material systems, from insulators to semiconductors, from metals to superconductors. In recent years, this approach has been extended to the realm of topological materials, providing a new avenue to access nontrivial features of their electronic band structure. In this review, we survey various topological material classes from a photonics standpoint, including crystal growth and lithographic structuring methods. We discuss how…
We investigate an unconventional topological phase transition that occurs in quantum spin Hall (QSH) systems when applying an external in-plane magnetic field. We show that this transition between QSH and trivial insulator phases is separated by a stable topological gapless phase, which is protected by the combination of particle-hole and reflection symmetries, and thus, we dub it as crystalline Weyl semimetal. We explore the stability of this new phase when particle-hole symmetry breaking terms are present. Especially, we predict a robust unconventional topological phase transition to be visi…
Unconventional superconductivity has been predicted to arise in the topologically non-trivial Fermi surface of doped inversion symmetric Weyl semimetals (WSM). In particular, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and nodal BCS states are theoretically predicted to be possible superconductor pairing states in inversion symmetric doped WSM. In an effort to resolve preferred pairing state, we theoretically study two separate four terminal quantum transport methods that each exhibit a unique electrical signature in the presence of FFLO and nodal BCS states in doped WSMs. We first introduce a Jos…
We study a topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator in two-dimensional (2D) systems with time-reversal and two-fold rotation symmetries. Contrary to the case of ordinary time-reversal invariant systems where a direct transition between two insulators is generally predicted, we find that the topological phase transition in systems with an additional two-fold rotation symmetry is mediated by an emergent stable two-dimensional Weyl semimetal phase between two insulators. Here the central role is played by the so-called space-time inversion symmetry…
Periodically patterned metamaterials are known for exhibiting wave properties similar to the ones observed in electronic band structures in crystal lattices. In particular, periodic ferromagnetic materials are characterized by the presence of bands and bandgaps in their spin-wave spectrum at tunable GHz frequencies. Recently, the fabrication of magnets hosting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions has been pursued with high interest since properties such as the stabilization of chiral spin textures and nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation emerge from this antisymmetric exchange coupling. In this c…
Very recently, novel quasiparticles beyond those mimicking the elementary high-energy particles such as Dirac and Weyl fermions have attracted great interest in condensed matter physics and materials science1-9. Here we report the first experimental observation of the long-desired quadratic Weyl points10 by using a three-dimensional chiral metacrystal of sound waves. Markedly different from the newly observed unconventional quasiparticles5-9, such as the spin-1 Weyl points and the charge-2 Dirac points that are featured respectively with threefold and fourfold band crossings, the charge-2 Weyl…
Metamaterials and plasmonics are powerful tools for unconventional manipulation and harnessing of light. Metamaterials can be engineered to possess intriguing properties lacking in natural materials, such as negative refractive index. Plasmonics offers capabilities to confine light in subwavelength dimensions and to enhance light-matter interactions. Recently,graphene-based plasmonics has revealed emerging technological potential as it features large tunability, higher field-confinement and lower loss compared to metal-based plasmonics. Here,we introduce hybrid structures comprising graphene p…
Unconventional Weyl phonons with higher topological charges in crystalline solids have attracted increasing attention. By symmetry analysis and low-energy $k.p$ effective Hamiltonian, we propose the symmetry enforced triple hourglass Weyl phonons (THWPs) with Chern number $\mathcal C$ = $\pm$ 3 protected by $6_3$ screw rotation symmetry in chiral space groups 173 ($P6_3$) and 182 ($P6_322$). We take LiIO$_3$ with space group 173 as a candidate and confirm that it possesses THWP with linear and quadratic dispersions along the $k_z$ direction and in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane, respectively. Due to th…
The surface states of Weyl semi-metals (SM's) consist of disjointed Fermi-arcs. This unusual surface-Fermiology provides a fingerprint of the topological features of the bulk Weyl-phase. Using a combination of semiclassical and numerical methods, we show that, in contrast to naive expectation, there are closed magnetic orbits involving the open- surface Fermi-arcs. Below a critical field strength that depends on sample thickness, these orbits produce periodic quantum oscillations of the density of states in a magnetic field, enabling a variety of experimental probes of the unconventional Fermi…
Three-dimensional (3D) Weyl and Dirac semimetals garner considerable attention in condensed matter physics due to the exploration of entirely new topological phases and related unconventional surface states. Nodal line and ring semimetals on the other hand can facilitate 3D band crossings characterized by nontrivial links such as coupled chains and knots that are protected by the underlying crystal symmetry. Experimental complexities, detrimental effects of the spin-orbit interaction, along with the merging of the underlying surface states into the bulk pose great challenges for growing advanc…
Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
The concept of topological energy bands and their manifestations have been demonstrated in condensed matter systems as a fantastic paradigm toward unprecedented physical phenomena and properties that are robust against disorders. Recent years, this paradigm was extended to phononic metamaterials (including mechanical and acoustic metamaterials), giving rise to the discovery of remarkable phenomena that were not observed elsewhere thanks to the extraordinary controllability and tunability of phononic metamaterials as well as versatile measuring techniques. These phenomena include, but not limit…
Weyl semimetals are one kind of three-dimensional gapless semimetal with nontrivial topology in the momentum space. The chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals manifests as a charge imbalance between the Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities induced by parallel electric and magnetic fields. We investigate the chiral anomaly effect on the plasmon mode in both intrinsic and doped Weyl semimetals within the random phase approximation. We prove that the chiral anomaly gives rise to a different plasmon mode in intrinsic Weyl semimetals. We also find the chiral anomaly leads to some exotic properties in the …
We design and implement a three dimensional acoustic Weyl metamaterial hosting robust modes bound to a one-dimensional topological lattice defect. The modes are related to topological features of the bulk bands, and carry nonzero orbital angular momentum locked to the direction of propagation. They span a range of axial wavenumbers defined by the projections of two bulk Weyl points to a one-dimensional subspace, in a manner analogous to the formation of Fermi arc surface states. We use acoustic experiments to probe their dispersion relation, orbital angular momentum locked waveguiding, and abi…
In disordered Weyl semimetals, mechanisms of topological origin lead to the protection against Anderson localization, and at the same time to different types of transverse electromagnetic response -- the anomalous Hall, and chiral magnetic effect. We here apply field theory methods to discuss the manifestation of these phenomena at length scales which are beyond the scope of diagrammatic perturbation theory. Specifically we show how an interplay of symmetry breaking and the chiral anomaly leads to a field theory containing two types of topological terms. Generating the unconventional response …
Dirac and Weyl nodal materials can host low-energy relativistic quasiparticles. Under strong magnetic fields, the topological properties of Dirac/Weyl materials can directly manifest through quantum Hall states. However, most Dirac/Weyl nodes generically exist in semimetals without exploitable bandgaps due to their accidental band-crossing origin. Here we report the first experimental observation of Weyl fermions in a semiconductor. Tellurene, the 2D form of tellurium, possesses chiral crystal structure which induces unconventional Weyl nodes with a hedgehog-like radial spin texture near the c…
Superconducting Weyl semimetals present a novel and promising system to harbor new forms of unconventional topological superconductivity. Within the context of time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetals with $d$-wave superconductivity, we demonstrate that the number of Majorana cones equates to the number of intersections between the $d$-wave nodal lines and the Fermi arcs. We illustrate the importance of nodal line-arc intersections by demonstrating the existence of locally stable surface Majorana cones that the winding number does not predict. The discrepancy between Majorana cones and the wind…

We present the first theoretical study of transport properties of Weyl semimetals with point defects. Focusing on a class of time-reversal symmetric Weyl lattice models, we show that dilute lattice vacancies induce a finite density of quasi-localized states at and near the nodal energy, causing strong modifications to the low-energy spectrum. This generates novel transport effects, namely (i) an oscillatory behaviour of the dc-conductivity with the charge carrier density in the absence of magnetic fields, and (ii) a plateau-shaped dissipative optical response for photon frequencies below the i…
Weyl points are often believed to appear in pairs with opposite chirality. In this work, we show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that single Weyl phonons with linear dispersion and double Weyl phonons with quadratic dispersion are simultaneously present between two specific phonon branches in realistic materials with trigonal or hexagonal lattices. These phonon Weyl points are guaranteed to locate at high-symmetry points due to the screw rotational symmetry, forming a unique triangular Weyl complex. In sharp contrast to conventional Weyl systems with surface arcs termina…
We investigate novel features of three dimensional non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals, paying special attention to its unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. We use the non-Bloch Chern numbers as the tool to obtain the topological phase diagram, which is also confirmed by the energy spectra from our numerical results. It is shown that, in sharp contrast to Hermitian systems, the conventional (Bloch) bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian topological semimetals, which is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. We establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-…
Symmetry-protected topological semimetals are at the focus of solid-state research due to their unconventional properties, for example, regarding transport. By investigating local two-band Bloch Hamiltonians in the spin-1/2 basis for the 122 magnetic point groups, we classify twofold-degenerate band touchings such as Weyl points, robust nodal lines on axes and in mirror planes, and fragile nodal lines. We find that all magnetic point groups that lack the product of inversion and time-reversal symmetries can give rise to topologically nontrivial band touchings. Hence, such nodes are the rule ra…
Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe5 flakes when in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Be…
We investigate higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) having bulk Weyl nodes attached to both surface and hinge Fermi arcs. We identify a new type of Weyl node, that we dub a $2nd$ order Weyl node, that can be identified as a transition in momentum space in which both the Chern number and a higher order topological invariant change. As a proof of concept we use a model of stacked higher order quadrupole insulators to identify three types of WSM phases: $1st$-order, $2nd$-order, and hybrid-order. The model can also realize type-II and hybrid-tilt WSMs with various surface and hinge arcs. Moreove…
Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, w…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by unconventional electromagnetic response. We present analytical expressions for all components of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent charge-spin linear-response tensor of Weyl fermions. The spin-momentum locking of the Weyl Hamiltonian leads to a coupling between charge and longitudinal spin fluctuations, while transverse spin fluctuations remain decoupled from the charge. A real Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes can show this charge-spin coupling in equilibrium if its crystal symmetry is sufficiently low. All Weyl semimetals are expected to show…
Crystalline semimetals with certain space group symmetries may possess unusual electronic structure topology, distinct from the conventional Weyl and Dirac semimetals. Characteristic property of these materials is the existence of band-touching points with multiple (higher than two-fold) degeneracy and nonzero topological charge. CoSi is a representative of this group of materials exhibiting the so-called "new fermions". We report on an ab initio calculation of the electronic structure of CoSi using density functional methods, taking into account the spin-orbit interactions. We demonstrate the…
