We analyze the effect of the tilt on the transverse thermoelectric coefficient of Weyl semimetals in the \emph{conformal} limit, i.e., zero temperature and zero chemical potential. Using the Kubo formalism, we find a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermoelectric conductivity as a function of the tilt perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a linear behavior when the tilt is aligned to the magnetic field. An ``axial Nernst" current (chiral currents counter propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient) is generated in inversion symmetric Weyl materials when the tilt vector has a projection in the direction of the magnetic field. This analysis will help in the design and interpretation of thermoelectric transport experiments in recently discovered topological quantum materials.
We theoretically describe a thermoelectric effect that is entirely due to Andreev processes involving the formation of Cooper pairs through the coupling of electrons and holes. The Andreev thermoelectric effect can occur in ballistic ferromagnet-superconductor junctions with a dominant superconducting proximity effect on the ferromagnet, and it is very sensitive to surface states emerging in unconventional superconductors. We consider hybrid junctions in two and three dimensions to demonstrate that the thermoelectric current is always reversed in the presence of low-energy Andreev bound states…
We show that in mesoscopic four-terminal thermoelectric devices with two electrodes (the source and the drain) and two heat baths, inelastic scattering processes can lead to unconventional thermoelectric transport. The source (or the drain) can be cooled by passing a thermal current between the two heat baths, with no net heat exchange between the heat baths and the electrodes. This effect, termed as cooling by heat current, is a mesoscopic heat drag effect. In addition, there is a transverse thermoelectric effect where electrical current and power can be generated by a transverse temperature …
Thermoelectric transport in strongly spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional Rashba system is studied using the exact solution of the linearized Boltzmann equation. Some unusual transport behaviors are revealed. We show that the electrical conductivity takes a Drude form when the Fermi energy $E_{F}$ is above the band crossing point, but a non-Drude form which is a quadratic function of $E_{F}$ when $E_{F}$ lies below the band crossing point. The Mott relation breaks down when $E_{F}$ lies in the vicinity of the band crossing point. It is shown that the thermopower and thermoelectric figure of meri…
We investigate how tilting affects the off-diagonal, dissipationless response of a pair of chirally imbalanced Weyl cones to various external perturbations. The pair of chirally imbalanced Weyl cones can be described as a chiral electron fluid, that can flow with a velocity field that contains vorticity. Upon applying an external magnetic field, we obtain the so-called magnetovortical linear-response matrix that relates electric and heat currents to the magnetic field (chiral magnetic effect) and the vorticity (chiral vortical effect). We show how this reponse matrix becomes anisotropic upon t…
In the past decade, a new research frontier emerges at the interface between physics and renewable energy, termed as the inelastic thermoelectric effects where inelastic transport processes play a key role. The study of inelastic thermoelectric effects broadens our understanding of thermoelectric phenomena and provides new routes towards high-performance thermoelectric energy conversion. Here, we review the main progress in this field, with a particular focus on inelastic thermoelectric effects induced by the electron-phonon and electron-photon interactions. We introduce the motivations, the b…
We present a microscopic theory of the magnetic quadrupole moment density $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ in periodic crystals with combined time reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) and inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) symmetry. We obtain a gauge-invariant expression with clear physical interpretation and demonstrate the typical behaviour of $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ in a minimal two-band model that hosts a tilted Dirac cone. We then show that $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ leads to an intrinsic nonlinear anomalous thermoelectric current. As an example, we calculate the nonlinear Nernst and Hall current in the loop-current model for cuprate s…
We study longitudinal electric and thermoelectric transport coefficients of Dirac fermions on a simple lattice model where tuning of a single parameter enables us to change the type of Dirac cones from type-I to type-II. We pay particular attention to the behavior of the critical situation, i.e., the type-III Dirac cone. We find that the transport coefficients of the type-III Dirac fermions behave as the limiting case of neither the type-I nor type-II. On the one hand, the qualitative behaviors of the type-III case are similar to those of the type-I case. On the other hand, the transport coeff…
In an unconventional superconductor, the interplay of scattering off impurities and Andreev processes may lead to different scattering times for electronlike and holelike quasiparticles. Such electron-hole asymmetry appears when the impurity scattering phase shift is intermediate between the Born and unitary limits and leads to an expectation for large thermoelectric effects. Here, we examine the thermoelectric response of a $d$-wave superconductor connected to normal-metal reservoirs under a temperature bias using a fully self-consistent quasiclassical theory. The thermoelectrically induced q…
We investigate the thermoelectric current and heat conductance in a chiral Josephson contact on a surface of a 3D topological insulator, covered with superconducting and magnetic insulator films. The contact consists of two junctions of Majorana and Dirac channels next to two superconductors. Geometric asymmetry results in a supercurrent without a phase bias. The interference of Dirac fermions causes oscillations of the electric and heat currents with an unconventional period $2Φ_0=h/e$ as functions of the Aharonov-Bohm flux. Due to the gapless character of Majorana modes, there is no threshol…
We show that the Coulomb interaction between two circuits separated by an insulating layer leads to unconventional thermoelectric effects, such as the cooling by thermal current effect, the transverse thermoelectric effect and Maxwell's demon effect. The first refers to cooling in one circuit induced by the thermal current in the other circuit. The middle represents electric power generation in one circuit by the temperature gradient in the other circuit. The physical picture of Coulomb drag between the two circuits is first demonstrated for the case with one quantum dot in each circuits and t…
Electrons in graphene follow unconventional trajectories at PN junctions, driven by their pseudospintronic degree of freedom. Significant is the prominent angular dependence of transmission, capturing the chiral nature of the electrons and culminating in unit transmission at normal incidence (Klein tunneling). We theoretically show that such chiral tunneling can be directly observed from the junction resistance of a tilted interface probed with separate split gates. The junction resistance is shown to increase with tilt in agreement with recent experimental evidence. The tilt dependence arises…
We study the anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in a linearized low-energy model of a tilted Weyl semimetal, with two Weyl nodes separated in momentum space. For inversion symmetric tilt, we give analytic expressions in two opposite limits: for a small tilt, corresponding to a type-I Weyl semimetal, the Nernst conductivity is finite and independent of the Fermi level, while for a large tilt, corresponding to a type-II Weyl semimetal, it acquires a contribution depending logarithmically on the Fermi energy. This result is in a sharp contrast to the nontilted case, where the Nernst respon…
These compounds have long been known as promising thermoelectric materials. Recently it was revealed, that they also have unconventional electronic topology. This renewed interest to the investigation of their transport properties. In order to improve theoretical description of thermoelectric transport in these compounds, we take into account electron scattering beyond commonly used constant relaxation time approximation. Using first principle calculations, we investigate the scattering of charge carriers by phonons and point defects. The dependence of the scattering rate on the energy correla…
We developed a comprehensive theoretical framework focusing on many-body effects of exciton species in monolayer WS$_2$, including bright and dark excitons, and intra- and inter-valley biexcitons, to investigate valley dynamics in monolayer WS$_2$ subjected to a tilted magnetic field B. In particular, the evolution of the exciton population densities and the many-body particle scatterings are considered to calculate the valley polarization (V P ) as a function of the magnetic field. We found valley splittings for the dark exciton and biexciton energy levels that are larger than those of bright…
We theoretically study the influence of impurity scattering on the electric and thermal transport of borophane layer, a two-dimensional anisotropic Dirac semi-metal with two tilted and anisotropic Dirac cones. In a systematic framework, we have calculated exactly the electrical conductivity and thermoelectric coefficients of borophane in the presence of the short-range, long-range charged impurity and the short-range electro-magnetic (SREM) scatterers, by using the exact solution of the Boltzmann transport equation within the linear-response theory. Contrary to the large electron-hole asymmetr…
Chiral anomaly or Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) has a significant impact on the electron transport behaviors, leading to remarkable longitudinal or planar electrical and thermoelectric transport phenomena in the presence of electromagnetic gauge fields. These phenomena are consequences of the imbalanced chiral charge and energy induced by chiral anomaly in the presence of parallel electric ($\mathbf{E}$) and magnetic ($\mathbf{B}$) fields ($\mathbf{E \cdot B }\neq 0$) or $(\mathbf{B \cdot \nabla }T\neq 0)$ ($\mathbf{\nabla}T$ is the thermal gradient). We here propose anot…
Novel two-dimensional (2D) emergent fermions and negative Poisson's ratio in 2D materials are fascinating subjects of research. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we predict that the hexacoordinated Mg$_{2}$C monolayer hosts both exotic properties. We analyze its phonon spectrum, reveal the Raman active modes, and show that it has small in-plane stiffness constants. Particularly, under the tensile strain in the zigzag direction, the Mg$_{2}$C monolayer shows an intrinsic negative Poisson's ratio $\sim -0.023$, stemming from its unique puckered hinge structur…
The electronic states in a corner-overgrown bent GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well heterostructure are studied with numerical Hartree simulations. Transmission electron microscope pictures of the junction justify the sharp-corner assumption. In a tilted magnetic field both facets of the bent quantum well are brought to a quantum Hall (QH) state, and the corner hosts an unconventional hybrid system of two coupled counter-propagating quantum Hall edges and an additional one-dimensional accumulation wire. A subsystems model is introduced, whereby the total hybrid dispersion and wavefunctions are explained…
