Depending on the geometry of their Fermi surfaces, Weyl semimetals and their analogues in classical systems have been classified into two types. In type I Weyl semimetals (WSMs), the cone-like spectrum at the Weyl point (WP) is not tilted, leading to a point-like closed Fermi surface. In type II WSMs, on the contrary, the energy spectrum around the WP is strongly tilted such that the Fermi surface transforms from a point into an open surface. Here, we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, a new type of (classical) Weyl semimetal whose Fermi surface is neither a point nor a surface, but a flat line. The distinctive Fermi surfaces of such semimetals, dubbed as type III or zero-index WSMs, gives rise to unique physical properties: one of the edge modes of the semimetal exhibits a zero index of refraction along a specific direction, in stark contrast to types I and II WSMs for which the index of refraction is always non-zero. We show that the zero-index response of such topological phases enables exciting applications such as extraordinary wave transmission (EOT).
Weyl particles exhibit chiral transport property under external curved space-time geometry. This effect is called chiral gravitational effect, which plays an important role in quantum field theory. However, the absence of real Weyl particles in nature hinders the observation of such interesting phenomena. In this paper, we show that chiral gravitational effect can be manifested in Weyl metamaterials with spatially controlled nonlocality. This inhomogeneous modulation results in a spatially dependent group velocity in the Weyl cone dispersion, which is equivalent to introducing a curved backgro…
New scientific investigations of artificially structured materials and experiments have exhibit wave manipulation to the extreme. In particular, zero refractive index metamaterials have been on the front line of wave physics research for their unique wave manipulation properties and application potentials. Remarkably, in such exotic materials, time-harmonic fields have infinite wavelength and do not exhibit any spatial variations in their phase distribution. This unique feature can be achieved by forcing a Dirac cone to the center of the Brillouin zone ( point), as previously predicted and exp…
We report the design of a new electromagnetic device with a new mapping function to have simultaneous electromagnetic concentration and rotation using a singular radial mapping. We implement such a device only by using alternating structure of zero index metamaterials and perfect electric conductors. Numerical simulations are performed to verify its functionality.
We present the vertically illuminated Si compatible mid-infrared photodetectors based on graphene that forms negative-index metamaterial. The coupling into a 2D layer at the angles near normal to the surface is negligible without the help of a metamaterial. We propose a low loss metamaterial, the dielectric structure with the nano/microholes through 2D materials that supports a resonance and enhances quantum efficiency in a wide range of incident angles.
We have made measurements of microwave transmission over the 12 - 18 GHz range and through a simple metamaterial exhibiting a negative index of refraction. The metamaterial consisted of an array of wires cladded in dielectric embedded in a magnetic ferrite. The ferrite replaced the cut-ring structure usually used to create the negative permeability. The dielectric cladding decoupled the ferrite from the wires, thereby allowing the wire array permittivity to be simultaneously negative with the permeability. The simplicity of the design allows for miniaturization of potential microwave devices b…
Phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials are periodic structures whose effective properties can be tailored at will to achieve extreme control on wave propagation. Their refractive index is obtained from the homogenization of the infinite periodic system, but it is possible to locally change the properties of a finite crystal in such a way that it results in an effective gradient of the refractive index (GRIN). In such case the propagation of waves can be accurately described by means of ray theory, and different refractive devices can be designed in the framework of wave propagation in in…
The recent breakthrough in metamaterial-based optical computing devices [Science 343, 160 (2014)] has inspired a quest for similar systems in acoustics, performing mathematical operations on sound waves. So far, acoustic analog computing has been demonstrated using thin planar metamaterials, carrying out the operator of choice in Fourier domain. These so-called filtering metasurfaces, however, are always accompanied with additional Fourier transform sub-blocks, enlarging the computing system and preventing its applicability in miniaturized architectures. Here, employing a simple high-index aco…
Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) feature a uniform electromagnetic mode over a large area in arbitrary shapes, enabling many applications including high-transmission supercouplers with arbitrary shapes, direction-independent phase matching for nonlinear optics, and collective emission of many quantum emitters. However, most ZIMs reported till date are passive, with no method for the dynamic modulation of their electromagnetic properties. Here, we design and fabricate a magnetically tunable ZIM consisting of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) pillars sandwiched between two copper clad laminates in the mi…
Zero-index (ZI) materials are synthetic optical materials with vanishing effective permittivity and/or permeability at a given design frequency. Recently, it has been shown that the permeability of a zero-index host material can be deterministically tuned by adding photonic dopants. Here, we apply metal-induced crystallization (MIC) in quasi-random metal-semiconductor composites to fabricate large-area zero-index materials. Using Ag-Si as a model systems, we demonstrate that the localized crystallization of the semiconductor at the metal/semiconductor interface can be used as design parameter …
Due to the deep sub-wavelength unit cell in metamaterials, the quasi-static approximation is usually employed to describe the propagation. By making pairs of resonators, we highlight that multiple scattering also occurs at this scale and results in the existence of a dipolar resonance, which leads to a negative index of refraction when we consider several resonators. We experimentally verify the possibility of obtaining a negative index of refraction in periodic metamaterials in two different ways, and eventually demonstrates a superlensing effect in both cases.
Electromagnetic metamaterials are man-made structures that have novel properties such as a negative refraction index, not attainable in naturally occurring materials. Although negative index materials (NIMs) in microwave frequencies were demonstrated in 2001, it has remained challenging to design NIMs for optical frequencies especially those with both negative permittivity and negative permeability [known as left-handed metamaterials (LHMs)]. Here, by going beyond the traditional concept of the combination of artificial electronic and magnetic meta-atoms to design NIMs, we propose a novel LHM …
Planar metamaterials with tailorable electromagnetic properties in the terahertz domain offer customized optics solutions that are needed for the development of imaging and spectroscopy systems. In particular, metamaterials carry the potential to substitute conventional bulky optics or can be basic building blocks for completely novel devices. In this respect it is advantageous that metamaterials can be devised to be impedance-matched to another material regarding their electromagnetic properties. Here, we design, fabricate and investigate a metamaterial with tailorable refractive index and im…
As a basic building block, optical resonant cavities (ORCs) are widely used in light manipulation; they can confine electromagnetic waves and improve the interaction between light and matter, which also plays an important role in cavity quantum electrodynamics, nonlinear optics and quantum optics. Especially in recent years, the rise of metamaterials, artificial materials composed of subwavelength unit cells, greatly enriches the design and function of ORCs. Here, we review zero-index and hyperbolic metamaterials for constructing the novel ORCs. Firstly, this paper introduces the classificatio…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are waves that remain localized even though they coexist with a continuous spectrum of radiating waves that can carry energy away. Their very existence defies conventional wisdom. Although BICs were first proposed in quantum mechanics, they are a general wave phenomenon and have since been identified in electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves in air, water waves and elastic waves in solids. These states have been studied in a wide range of material systems, such as piezoelectric materials, dielectric photonic crystals, optical waveguides and fibers, quantum d…
Unconventional Weyl points with topological charges higher than 1 can transform into various complex unconventional Weyl exceptional contours under non-Hermitian perturbations. However, theoretical studies of these exceptional contours have been limited to tight-binding models. Here, we propose to realize unconventional Weyl exceptional contours in photonic continua -- non-Hermitian anisotropic chiral plasma, based on ab initio calculation by Maxwell's equations. By perturbing in-plane permittivity, an unconventional Weyl point can transform into a quadratic Weyl exceptional circle, a Type-I W…
Weyl points, serving as monopoles in the momentum space and laying the foundation of topological gapless phases, have recently been experimentally demonstrated in various physical systems. However, none of the observed Weyl degeneracies are ideal: they either offset in energy or coexist with trivial dispersions at other momenta. The lack of an ideal Weyl system sets a serious limit to the further development of Weyl physics and potential applications. Here, by constructing a photonic metamaterial, we experimentally observe an ideal Weyl system, whose nodal frequencies are pinned by symmetries …
