We prove that the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ of a closed nonorientable surface of genus $g$ different than 4 is generated by three torsion elements. Moreover, for every even integer $k\ge 12$ and $g$ of the form $g=pk+2q(k-1)$ or $g=pk+2q(k-1)+1$, where $p,q$ are non-negative integers and $p$ is odd, $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ is generated by three conjugate elements of order $k$. Analogous results are proved for the subgroup of $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ generated by Dehn twists.
We obtain simple generating sets for various mapping class groups of a nonorientable surface with punctures and/or boundary. We also compute the abelianizations of these mapping class groups.
Using the Galatius--Kupers--Randal-Williams framework of cellular $E_2$-algebras, we prove a secondary stability theorem for mapping class groups of nonorientable surfaces. As a corollary, we obtain a new best known stability range for the homology of the mapping class groups of nonorientable surfaces with respect to adding torus holes.
We prove that the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g\geq 4$ has a faithful linear representation of dimension $g^2-1$ over $\mathbb{R}$.
Let Ng be the connected closed nonorientable surface of genus g >= 5 and Mod(Ng) denote the mapping class group of Ng. We prove that the outer automorphism group of Mod(Ng) is either trivial or Z if g is odd, and injects into the mapping class group of sphere with four holes if g is even.
We obtain a simple presentation of the hyperelliptic mapping class group $M^h(N)$ of a nonorientable surface N. As an application we compute the first homology group of $M^h(N)$ with coefficients in $H_1(N;Z)$.
We obtain a finite set of generators for the level 2 mapping class group of a closed nonorientable surface of genus $g\ge 3$. This set consists of isotopy classes of Lickorish's Y-homeomorphisms also called crosscap slides.
Let $\textrm{Mod}(N_{g, p})$ denote the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $p$ punctures. For $g\geq14$, we show that $\textrm{Mod}(N_{g, p})$ can be generated by five elements or by six involutions.
Let $N_{g,n}$ denote the nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ boundary components and $M(N_{g,n})$ its mapping class group. We obtain an explicit finite presentation of $M(N_{g,n})$ for $n=0,1$ and all $g$ such that $g+n>3$.
A crosscap transposition is an element of the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface represented by a homeomorphism supported on a one-holed Klein bottle and swapping two crosscaps. We prove that the mapping class group of a compact nonorientable surface of genus $g\ge 7$ is generated by conjugates of one crosscap transposition. In the case when the surface is either closed or has one boundary component, we give an explicit set of $g+2$ crosscap transpositions generating the mapping class group.
We show that Szepietowski's system of generators for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface is a minimal generating set by Dehn twists and $Y$-homemorphisms.
Let T(N) be the subgroup of the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface N (possibly with punctures and/or boundary components) generated by twists about two-sided circles. We obtain a simple generating set for T(N). As an application we compute the first homology group (abelianization) of T(N).
We prove that, for $g\geq19$ the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g$, $\textrm{Mod}(N_g)$, can be generated by two elements, one of which is of order $g$. We also prove that for $g\geq26$, $\textrm{Mod}(N_g)$ can be generated by three involutions if $g\geq26$.
Crosscap slide is a homeomorphism of a nonorientable surface of genus at least 2, which was introduced under the name Y-homeomorphism by Lickorish as an example of an element of the mapping class group which cannot be expressed as a product of Dehn twists. We prove that the subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed nonorientable surface N generated by all crosscap slides is equal to the level 2 subgroup consisting of those mapping classes which act trivially on H_1(N;Z_2). We also prove that this subgroup is generated by involutions.
Let $N_{g,s}$ denote the nonorientable surface of genus g with s boundary components. Recently Paris and Szepietowski obtained an explicit finite presentation for the mapping class group $M(N_{g,s})$ of the surface $N_{g,s}$, where $s\in{0,1}$ and $g+s>3$. Following this work we obtain a finite presentation for the subgroup $T(N_{g,s})$ of $M(N_{g,s})$ generated by Dehn twists.
Let N_{g,s} denote the nonorientable surface of genus g with s boundary components. Recently Paris and Szepietowski obtained an explicit finite presentation for the mapping class group M(N_{g,s}) of the surface N_{g,s}, where s\in{0,1} and g+s>3. Following this work we obtain a finite presentation for the mapping class group M(N_{g,s}) with generators being Dehn twists and one crosscap slide.
Let $S$ be a nonorientable surface of genus $g\ge 5$ with $n\ge 0$ punctures, and $\Mcg(S)$ its mapping class group. We define the complexity of $S$ to be the maximum rank of a free abelian subgroup of $\Mcg(S)$. Suppose that $S_1$ and $S_2$ are two such surfaces of the same complexity. We prove that every isomorphism $\Mcg(S_1)\to\Mcg(S_2)$ is induced by a diffeomorphism $S_1\to S_2$. This is an analogue of Ivanov's theorem on automorphisms of the mapping class groups of an orientable surface, and also an extension and improvement of the first author's previous result.
Suppose that $f$ is a homomorphism from the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}(N_{g,n})$ of a nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ boundary components, to $\mathrm{GL}(m,\mathbb{C})$. We prove that if $g\ge 5$, $n\le 1$ and $m\le g-2$, then $f$ factors through the abelianization of $\mathcal{M}(N_{g,n})$, which is $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $g\in\{5,6\}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $g\ge 7$. If $g\ge 7$, $n=0$ and $m=g-1$, then either $f$ has finite image (of order at most two if $g\ne 8$), or it is conjugate to one of four "homological representations". As an application we prove th…
Let $M(N_{h,n})$ denote the mapping class group of a compact nonorientable surface of genus $h\ge 7$ and $n\le 1$ boundary components, and let $T(N_{h,n})$ be the subgroup of $M(N_{h,n})$ generated by all Dehn twists. It is known that $T(N_{h,n})$ is the unique subgroup of $M(N_{h,n})$ of index $2$. We prove that $T(N_{h,n})$ (and also $M(N_{h,n})$) contains a unique subgroup of index $2^{g-1}(2^g-1)$ up to conjugation, and a unique subgroup of index $2^{g-1}(2^g+1)$ up to conjugation, where $g=\lfloor(h-1)/2\rfloor$. The other proper subgroups of $T(N_{h,n})$ and $M(N_{h,n})$ have index great…
Let $N$ be a connected nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures. Suppose that $g$ is odd and $g+n \geqslant 6$. We prove that the automorphism group of the complex of curves of $N$ is isomorphic to the mapping class group $\mathcal M_{N}$ of $N$.
We showed that the twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed connected nonorientable surface of genus $g\geq13$ can be generated by two involutions and an element of order $g$ or $g-1$ depending on whether $g$ is odd or even respectively.
For any nonorientable closed surface, we determine the minimal dilatation among pseudo-Anosov mapping classes arising from Penner's construction. We deduce that the sequence of minimal Penner dilatations has exactly two accumulation points, in contrast to the case of orientable surfaces where there is only one accumulation point. One of our key techniques is representing pseudo-Anosov dilatations as roots of Alexander polynomials of fibred links and comparing dilatations using the skein relation for Alexander polynomials.
Let t_a be the Dehn twist about a circle a on an orientable surface. It is well known that for each circle b and an integer n, I(t_a^n(b),b)=|n|I(a,b)^2, where I(,) is the geometric intersection number. We prove a similar formula for circles on nonorientable surfaces. As a corollary we prove some algebraic properties of twists on nonorientable surfaces. We also prove that if M(N) is the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface N, then up to a finite number of exceptions, the centraliser of the subgroup of M(N) generated by the twists is equal to the centre of M(N) and is generated by twi…
We show that Norbury's McShane identity for nonorientable cusped hyperbolic surfaces N generalizes to quasifuchsian representations of pi_1(N) as well as pseudo-Anosov mapping Klein bottles with singular fibers given by N.
We prove that each injective simplicial map from the arc complex of a compact, connected, nonorientable surface with nonempty boundary to itself is induced by a homeomorphism of the surface. We also prove that the automorphism group of the arc complex is isomorphic to the quotient of the mapping class group of the surface by its center.
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
We construct a minimal generating set of the level 2 mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g$, and determine its abelianization for $g\ge4$.
Margalit and Schleimer observed that Dehn twists on orientable surfaces have nontrivial roots. We investigate the problem of roots of a Dehn twist t_c about a nonseparating circle c in the mapping class group M(N_g) of a nonorientable surface N_g of genus g. We explore the existence of roots and, following the work of McCullough, Rajeevsarathy and Monden, give a simple arithmetic description of their conjugacy classes. We also study roots of maximal degree and prove that if we fix an odd integer n>1, then for each sufficiently large g, t_c has a root of degree n in M(N_g). Moreover, for any po…
We show that on a nonorientable surface of genus at least 7 any power of a Dehn twist is equal to a single commutator in the mapping class group and the same is true, under additional assumptions, for the twist subgroup, and also for the extended mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus at least 3.
In this paper, we study a series of $L^2$-torsion invariants from the viewpoint of the mapping class group of a surface. We establish some vanishing theorems for them. Moreover we explicitly calculate the first two invariants and compare them with hyperbolic volumes.
We prove that both the hyperelliptic mapping class group and the extended hyperelliptic mapping class group are generated by two torsion elements. We also compute the index of the subgroup of the hyperelliptic mapping class group which is generated by involutions and we prove that the extended hyperelliptic mapping class group is generated by three orientation reversing involutions.
For a nonorientable surface, the twist subgroup is an index 2 subgroup of the mapping class group. It is generated by Dehn twists about two-sided simple closed curves. In this paper, we study involution generators of the twist subgroup. We give generating sets of involutions with the smallest number of elements our methods allow.
We prove that for genus $g=3,4$, the extended mapping class group $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ can be generated by two elements of finite orders. But for $g=1$, $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_1)$ cannot be generated by two elements of finite orders.
Let $S_g$ be the closed oriented surface of genus g and let $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group. When the genus is at least 3, $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ can be generated by torsion elements. We prove the follow results. For $g \geq 4$, $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ can be generated by 4 torsion elements. Three generators are involutions and the forth one is an order 3 element. $\text{Mod}(S_3)$ can be generated by 5 torsion elements. Four generators are involutions and the fifth one is an order 3 element.
We prove that the mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$ is generated by two elements of order $g$ for $g\geq 6$. Moreover, for $g\geq 7$ we found a generating set of two elements, of order $g$ and $g'$ which is the least divisor of $g$ such that $g'>2$. Furthermore, we proved that it is generated by two elements of order $g/\gcd (g,k)$ for $g\geq 3k^2+4k+1$ and any positive integer $k$.
We show that the normal closure of any periodic element of the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface whose order is greater than 2 contains the commutator subgroup, which for $g\geq 7$ is equal to the twist subgroup, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the normal closures of involutions to contain the twist subgroup. Finally, we provide a criterion for a periodic element to normally generate $\mathcal{M}(N_g)$ and give examples.
Let M be a surface (possibly nonorientable) with punctures and/or boundary components. The paper is a study of ``geometric subgroups'' of the mapping class group of M, that is subgroups corresponding to inclusions of subsurfaces (possibly disconnected). We characterise the subsurfaces which lead to virtually abelian geometric subgroups. We provide algebraic and geometric conditions under which two geometric subgroups are commensurable. We also describe the commensurator of a geometric subgroup in terms of the stabiliser of the underlying subsurface. Finally, we show some applications of our an…
Recently, John Franks and Michael Handel proved that, for $g\geq 3$ and $n\leq 2g-4$, every homomorphism from the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus $g$ to $\GL (n,\C)$ is trivial. We extend this result to $n\leq 2g-1$, also covering the case $g=2$. As an application, we prove the corresponding result for nonorientable surfaces. Another application is on the triviality of homomorphisms from the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $g$ to $\Aut (F_n)$ or to $\Out (F_n)$ for $n\leq 2g-1$.
In this paper, we develop the mathematical tools needed to explore isotopy classes of tilings on hyperbolic surfaces of finite genus, possibly nonorientable, with boundary, and punctured. More specifically, we generalize results on Delaney-Dress combinatorial tiling theory using an extension of mapping class groups to orbifolds, in turn using this to study tilings of covering spaces of orbifolds. Moreover, we study finite subgroups of these mapping class groups. Our results can be used to extend the Delaney-Dress combinatorial encoding of a tiling to yield a finite symbol encoding the complexi…
Given a finite set of $r$ points in a closed surface of genus $g$, we consider the torsion elements in the mapping class group of the surface leaving the finite set invariant. We show that the torsion elements generate the mapping class group if and only if $(g, r) \neq (2, 5k+4)$ for some integer $k$.
We show that the mapping class group of a closed oriented surface of genus at least three is generated by 3 elements of order 3 and by 4 elements of order 4. Note that the mapping class group cannot be generated by finitely many torsion elements of same order if genus is equal to one or two.
We show that for any periodic mapping class, there is some power which maps a nonseparating, simple closed curve to a distinct, disjoint nonseparating curve. As an application of this result, we introduce the notion of stable specific torsion length of a group element and show that the stable specific torsion length of a Dehn twist is bounded above by six.
We present a technique for the enumeration of all isotopically distinct ways of tiling a hyperbolic surface of finite genus, possibly nonorientable and with punctures and boundary. This provides a generalization of the enumeration of Delaney-Dress combinatorial tiling theory on the basis of isotopic tiling theory. To accomplish this, we derive representations of the mapping class group of the orbifold associated to the symmetry group in the group of outer automorphisms of the symmetry group of a tiling. We explicitly give descriptions of certain subgroups of mapping class groups and of tilings…
Let $S_g$ be the closed oriented surface of genus g and let $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ be the extended mapping class group of $S_g$. When the genus is at least 5, we prove that $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ can be generated by two torsion elements. One of these generators is an order 2 element, and the other one is an order 4g+2 element.
Mapping class groups of Haken 3-manifolds enjoy many of the homological finiteness properties of mapping class groups of 2-manifolds of finite type. For example, H(M) has a torsionfree subgroup of finite index, which is geometrically finite (i. e. is the fundamental group of a finite aspherical complex). This was proven by J. Harer for 2-manifolds and by the second author for Haken 3-manifolds. In this paper we prove that H(M) acts properly discontinuously on a contractible simplicial complex, with compact quotient. This implies that every torsionfree subgroup of finite index in H(M) is geomet…
Let S be an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic, let ψ\in\Mod(S) be a mapping class of S, and let T_ψ be the mapping torus of ψ. We study the action of lifts of ψon the homology of finite covers of S via the torsion homology growth of towers of finite covers of T_ψ. We show that ψadmits a lift to a finite cover with a homological eigenvalue of length greater than one if and only if the mapping torus T_ψ admits a finite cover X and a certain tower of abelian covers which have exponential torsion homology growth. We show that the existence of such a lift of ψis intrinsic to T_ψ…
Let $N_g$ be the non-orientable surface with genus $g$, $\text{MCG}(N_g)$ be the mapping class group of $N_g$, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ be the index 2 subgroup generated by all Dehn twists of $\text{MCG}(N_g)$. We prove that for odd genus, $\mathcal{T}(N_g)$ can be generated by three elements of finite orders.
