Let $G$ be a finite permutation group of degree $n$ and let ${\rm ifix}(G)$ be the involution fixity of $G$, which is the maximum number of fixed points of an involution. In this paper we study the involution fixity of almost simple primitive groups whose socle $T$ is an alternating or sporadic group; our main result classifies the groups of this form with ${\rm ifix}(T) \leqslant n^{4/9}$. This builds on earlier work of Burness and Thomas, who studied the case where $T$ is an exceptional group of Lie type, and it strengthens the bound ${\rm ifix}(T) > n^{1/6}$ (with prescribed exceptions), which was proved by Liebeck and Shalev in 2015. A similar result for classical groups will be established in a sequel.
Motivated by the theory of Riemann surfaces, we classify all possibilities for finite simple groups acting faithfully on a compact Riemann surface of genus at least 2 in such a way that all non-trivial elements have at most three fixed points on each non-regular orbit and at most four fixed points in total. In each case we also give information about the branching datum of the surface. There is a shorter version of this article (submitted for publication), and in this extended version we give many more details about the GAP code that we use for the calculations. We also explicitly include a le…
Motivated in part by representation theoretic questions, we prove that if G is a finite quasi-simple group, then there exists an elementary abelian subgroup of G that intersects every conjugacy class of involutions of G.
A graphical regular representation (GRR) of a group $G$ is a Cayley graph of $G$ whose full automorphism group is equal to the right regular permutation representation of $G$. In this paper we study cubic GRRs of $\mathrm{PSL}_{n}(q)$ ($n=4, 6, 8$), $\mathrm{PSp}_{n}(q)$ ($n=6, 8$), $\mathrm{P}Ω_{n}^{+}(q)$ ($n=8, 10, 12$) and $\mathrm{P}Ω_{n}^{-}(q)$ ($n=8, 10, 12$), where $q = 2^f$ with $f \ge 1$. We prove that for each of these groups, with probability tending to $1$ as $q \rightarrow \infty$, any element $x$ of odd prime order dividing $2^{ef}-1$ but not $2^{i}-1$ for each $1 \le i < ef$ t…
Trialitarian triples are triples of central simple algebras of degree 8 with orthogonal involution that provide a convenient structure for the representation of trialitarian algebraic groups as automorphism groups. This paper explicitly describes the canonical "trialitarian'' isomorphisms between the spin groups of the algebras with involution involved in a trialitarian triple, using a rationally defined shift operator that cyclically permutes the algebras. The construction relies on compositions of quadratic spaces of dimension 8, which yield all the trialitarian triples of split algebras. No…
In a previous paper the authors constructed a class of quasi-Hopf algebras $D^ω(G, A)$ associated to a finite group $G$, generalizing the twisted quantum double construction. We gave necessary and sufficient conditions, cohomological in nature, that the corresponding module category $Rep(D^ω(G, A))$ is a modular tensor category.\ In the present paper we verify the cohomological conditions for the class of groups $G$ which \emph{contain a unique involution}, and in this way we obtain an explicit construction of a new class of modular quasi-Hopf algebras.\ We develop the basic theory for general…
