We study McKay's observation on the Monster simple group, which relates the 2A-involutions of the Monster simple group to the extended E_8 diagram, using the theory of vertex operator algebras (VOAs). We first consider the sublattices L of the E_8 lattice obtained by removing one node from the extended E_8 diagram at each time. We then construct a certain coset (or commutant) subalgebra U associated with L in the lattice VOA V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}. There are two natural conformal vectors of central charge 1/2 in U such that their inner product is exactly the value predicted by Conway. The Griess algebra of U coincides with the algebra described in Conway's paper. There is a canonical automorphism of U of order |E_8/L|. Such an automorphism can be extended to the Leech lattice VOA V_Λand it is in fact a product of two Miyamoto involutions. In the sequel [LYY] to this article we shall develop the representation theory of $U$. It is expected that if U is actually contained in the Moonshine VOA V^\natural, the product of two Miyamoto involutions is in the desired conjugacy class of the Monster simple group.
E7 part: In this paper, we study McKay's E7 observation on the Baby Monster. By investigating so called derived c=7/10 Virasoro vectors, we show that there is a natural correspondence between dihedral subgroups of the Baby Monster and certain subalgebras of the Baby Monster vertex operator algebra which are constructed by the nodes of the affine E7 diagram. This allows us to reinterpret McKay's E7 observation via the theory of vertex operator algebras. For a class of vertex operator algebras including the Moonshine module, we will show that the product of two Miyamoto involutions associated to…
Let $ \Bbb V = \coprod_{h = 0}^{\infty} \Bbb V_h$ be the graded monster module of the monster simple group $\Bbb M$ and let $χ_k$ be an irreducible representation of $\Bbb M$. The generating function of $c_{hk}$ (the multiplicity of $χ_k$ in $\Bbb V_h$) is determined. Furthermore, the invariance group of the modular function associated with the generating function is also determined in this paper.
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.QA/0403010 at which several coset subalgebras of the lattice VOA $V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}$ were constructed and the relationship between such algebras with the famous McKay observation on the extended E_8 diagram and the Monster simple group were discussed. In this article, we shall provide the technical details. We completely determine the structure of the coset subalgebras constructed and show that they are all generated by two conformal vectors of central charge 1/2. We also study the representation theory of these coset subalgebras and show that the p…
In this article we prove that the full automorphism group of the baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra constructed by Hoehn is isomorphic to 2xB, where B is the baby-monster sporadic finite simple group and determine irreducible modules for the baby-monster vertex operator algebra. Our result has many corollaries. In particular, we can prove that the Z_2-orbifold construction with respect to a 2A-involution of the Monster applied to the moonshine vertex operator algebra yields the moonshine vertex operator algebra itself again.
We use uniqueness of a VOA (vertex operator algebra) extension of $(V_{EE_8}^+)^3$ to a Moonshine type VOA to give a new existence proof of a finite simple group of Monster type. The proof is relatively direct. Our methods depend on VOA representation theory and are free of many special calculations which traditionally occur in theory of the Monster.
We continue the program to make a moonshine path between a node of the extended $E_8$-diagram and the Monster. Our theory is a concrete model expressing some of the mysterious connections identified by John McKay, George Glauberman and Simon Norton. In this article, we treat the 3A and 6A-nodes. We determine the orbits of triples $(x,y,z)$ in the Monster where $z\in 2B$, $x, y \in 2A \cap C(z)$ and $xy\in 3A \cup 6A$. Such $x, y$ correspond to a rootless $EE_8$-pair in the Leech lattice. For the 3A and 6A cases, we shall say something about the "half Weyl groups", which are proposed in the Gla…
In this article, we describe some maximal $3$-local subgroups of the Monster simple group using vertex operator algebras (VOA). We first study the holomorphic vertex operator algebra obtained by applying the orbifold construction to the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra and a lift of a fixed-point free isometry of order $3$ of the Leech lattice. We also consider some of its special subVOAs and study their stabilizer subgroups using the symmetries of the subVOAs. It turns out that these stabilizer subgroups are $3$-local subgroups of its full automorphism group. As one of our main results, …
We introduce two-parameter quantum toroidal algebras of simply laced types and provide their group theoretic realization using finite subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbb C)$ via McKay correspondence. In particular our construction contains a realization of the vertex representation of the two-parameter quantum affine algebras of $ADE$ types.
Formulae expressing the trace of the composition of several (up to five) adjoint actions of elements of the Griess algebra of a vertex operator algebra are derived under certain assumptions on the action of the automorphism group. They coincide, when applied to the moonshine module $V^\natural$, with the trace formulae obtained in a different way by S.Norton, and the spectrum of idempotents related to 2A, 2B, 3A and 4A element of the Monster is determined by the representation theory of Virasoro algebra at $c=1/2$, $W_3$ algebra at $c=4/5$ or $W_4$ algebra at $c=1$. The generalization to the t…
We establish a $q$-analog of our recent work on vertex representations and the McKay correspondence. For each finite group $Γ$ we construct a Fock space and associated vertex operators in terms of wreath products of $Γ\times \mathbb C^{\times}$ and the symmetric groups. An important special case is obtained when $Γ$ is a finite subgroup of $SU_2$, where our construction yields a group theoretic realization of the representations of the quantum affine and quantum toroidal algebras of $ADE$ type.
In this paper we complete the proof of Ryba's modular moonshine conjectures. We do this by applying Hodge theory to the cohomology of the monster Lie algebra over the ring of p-adic integers in order to calculate the Tate cohomology groups of elements of the monster acting on the monster vertex algebra.
Let $V$ be a rational, selfdual, $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT type, and $G$ a finite automorphism group of $V.$ It is proved that the kernel of the representation of the modular group on twisted conformal blocks associated to $V$ and $G$ is a congruence subgroup. In particular, the $q$-character of each irreducible twisted module is a modular function on the same congruence subgroup. In the case $V$ is the Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's moonshine vertex operator algebra and $G$ is the monster simple group, the generalized McKay-Thompson series associated to any commuting pair in t…
We study aspects of the theory of generalized Kac-Moody Lie algebras (or Borcherds algebras) and their standard modules. It is shown how such an algebra with no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots, including Borcherds' Monster Lie algebra $\frak m$, can be naturally constructed from a certain Kac-Moody subalgebra and a module for it. We observe that certain generalized Verma (induced) modules for generalized Kac-Moody algebras are standard modules and hence irreducible. In particular, starting from the moonshine module for the Monster group $M$, we construct a certain $\{frak gl}_2$- an…
The theory of vertex algebras constitutes a mathematically rigorous axiomatic formulation of the algebraic origins of conformal field theory. In this context Borcherds algebras arise as certain ``physical'' subspaces of vertex algebras. The aim of this review is to give a pedagogical introduction into this rapidly-developing area of mathemat% ics. Based on the machinery of formal calculus we present the axiomatic definition of vertex algebras. We discuss the connection with conformal field theory by deriving important implications of these axioms. In particular, many explicit calculations are …
We use a Z_2-orbifold of the vertex operator algebra associated to the Niemeier lattice with root lattice A_3^8 and the no-ghost theorem of string theory to construct a generalized Kac-Moody algebra. Borcherds' theory of automorphic products allows us to determine the simple roots and identify the algebra with the fake baby monster Lie algebra.
We introduce the Z_2-extended Griess algebra of a vertex operator superalgebra with an involution and derive the Matsuo-Norton trace formulae for the extended Griess algebra based on conformal design structure. We illustrate an application of our formulae by reformulating the one-to-one correspondence between 2A-elements of the Baby-monster simple group and N=1 c=7/10 Virasoro subalgebras inside the Baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra.
We give a new construction of the moonshine VOA V^{\natural} over the real number field. We proved that V^{\natural} has a positive definite invariant bilinear form and its full automorphism group is the Monster simple group. We also construct an infinite series of meromorphic VOAs whose full automorphism groups are finite. We calculate the trace form on V^{\natural} for some element of the Monster.
In 1978, John McKay made an intriguing observation: 196884=196883+1. Monstrous Moonshine is the collection of questions (and a few answers) inspired by this observation. Like moonlight itself, Moonshine is an indirect phenomenon. Just as in the theory of moonlight one must introduce the sun, so in the theory of Moonshine one should go well beyond the Monster. Much as a talk discussing moonlight may include a few words on sunsets or comet tails, so will we see snapshots of the Theory of Generalised Moonshine.
Given a holomorphic $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra $V$ with graded dimension $j-744$, Borcherds's proof of the monstrous moonshine conjecture implies any finite order automorphism of $V$ has graded trace given by a "completely replicable function", and by work of Cummins and Gannon, these functions are principal moduli of genus zero modular groups. The action of the monster simple group on the monster vertex operator algebra produces 171 such functions, known as the monstrous moonshine functions. We show that 154 of the 157 non-monstrous completely replicable functions cannot possibly …
In this article, we study isomorphisms between simple current extensions of a simple VOA. For example, we classify the isomorphism classes of simple current extensions of some VOAs. Moreover, we consider the same simple current extension and describe the normalizer of the abelian automorphism group associated with this extension. In particular, we regard the moonshine module as simple current extensions of five subVOAs V_L^+ for 2-elementary totally even lattices L, and describe corresponding five normalizers of elementary abelian 2-group in the automorphism group of the moonshine module in te…
Moonshine relates three fundamental mathematical objects: the Monster sporadic simple group, the modular function j, and the moonshine module vertex operator algebra. Examining the relationship between modular functions and the representation theory of vertex operator algebras reveals rich structure. In particular, C2-cofiniteness (also called Zhu's finiteness condition) implies the existence of finite generating sets and Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt-like spanning sets for vertex operator algebras and their modules. These spanning sets feature desirable ordering restrictions, e.g., a difference-one …
We define an automorphism of VOA of order 3 by using a sub VOA isomorphic to a direct sum of 3-state Potts models $L(\ff,0)$ and an its module $L(\ff,3)$. This automorphism is a 3A element of the monster simple group if $V$ is the moonshine VOA $V^{\natural}$.
This is the first part of the revised versions of the notes of three consecutive expository lectures given by Chongying Dong, Haisheng Li and Yi-Zhi Huang in the conference on Monster and vertex operator algebras at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto, September 4-9, 1994. In this part we review the definitions of vertex operator algebras and twisted modules, and discuss examples.
In this article, we study the Ising vectors in the vertex operator algebra $V_Λ^+$ associated with the Leech lattice $Λ$. The main result is a characterization of the Ising vectors in $V_Λ^+$. We show that for any Ising vector $e$ in $V_Λ^+$, there is a sublattice $E\cong \sqrt{2}E_8$ of $Λ$ such that $e\in V_E^+$. Some properties about their corresponding $τ$-involutions in the moonshine vertex operator algebra $V^\natural$ are also discussed. We show that there is no Ising vector of $σ$-type in $V^\natural$. Moreover, we compute the centralizer $C_{\aut V^\natural}(z, τ_e)$ for any Ising vec…
Herein we study conformal vectors of a Z-graded vertex algebra of (strong) CFT type. We prove that the full vertex algebra automorphism group transitively acts on the set of the conformal vectors of strong CFT type if the vertex algebra is simple. The statement is equivalent to the uniqueness of self-dual vertex operator algebra structures of a simple vertex algebra. As an application, we show that the full vertex algebra automorphism group of a simple vertex operator algebra of strong CFT type uniquely decomposes into the product of certain two subgroups and the vertex operator algebra automo…
We establish a new group-theoretic realization of the basic representations of the twisted affine and twisted toroidal algebras of ADE types in the same spirit of our new approach to the McKay correspondence. Our vertex operator construction provides a unified description to the character tables for the spin cover of the wreath product of the twisted hyperoctahedral groups and an arbitrary finite group.
This is the second part of the revised versions of the notes of three consecutive expository lectures given by Chongying Dong, Haisheng Li and Yi-Zhi Huang in the conference on Monster and vertex operator algebras at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto, September 4-9, 1994. In this part, we discuss the commutativity, the associativity, the Jacobi identity and the relations among them. We also discuss an analogue of endomorphism ring of a vector space in vertex operator algebra theory.
We review 3-transposition groups arising in vertex operator algebra theory. One can construct a commutative algebra called the Matsuo algebra out of a 3-transposition group. Some 3-transposition groups arise as automorphism groups of vertex operator algebras via Matsuo algebras but there exist some 3-transposition groups which do not arise through Matsuo algebras. We will exhibit examples of those groups together with VOAs. This article is based on the author's talk at the seminar on ``Majorana, Axial, Vertex Algebras and the Monster (MAVAM)'' held online on June 4th, 2021.
In this article we study a VOA with two Miyamoto involutions generating $S_3$. In \cite{M3}, Miyamoto showed that a VOA generated by two conformal vectors whose Miyamoto involutions generate an automorphism group isomorphic to $S_3$ is isomorphic to one of the four candidates he listed. We construct one of them and prove that our VOA is actually the same as $\mathrm{VA}(e,f)$ studied by Miyamoto. We also show that there is an embedding into the moonshine VOA. Using our VOA, we can define the 3A-triality in the Monster.
We show using Borcherds products that for any fixed-point free automorphism of the Leech lattice satisfying a "no massless states" condition, the corresponding cyclic orbifold of the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra is isomorphic to the Monster vertex operator algebra. This induces an "orbifold duality" bijection between algebraic conjugacy classes of fixed-point free automorphisms of the Leech lattice satisfying this condition and algebraic conjugacy classes of non-Fricke elements in the Monster. We use the duality to show that non-Fricke Monstrous Lie algebras are Borcherds-Kac-Moody Li…
We describe a number of relationships between properties of the vacuum Verma module of a Virasoro algebra and the automorphism group of certain vertex operator algebras. These groups include the Deligne exceptional series of simple Lie groups and some exceptional finite simple groups including the Monster and Baby Monster.
This is the third part of the revised versions of the notes of three consecutive expository lectures given by Chongying Dong, Haisheng Li and Yi-Zhi Huang in the conference on Monster and vertex operator algebras at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto, September 4-9, 1994. In this part, we discuss an $S_{3}$-symmetry of the Jacobi identity, construct the contragredient module for a module for a vertex operator algebra and apply these to the construction of the vertex operator map for the moonshine module. We review the notions of intertwining operator, fusion rule and Verlin…
We introduce the main concepts and announce the main results in a theory of tensor products for module categories for a vertex operator algebra. This theory is being developed in a series of papers including hep-th 9309076 and hep-th 9309159. The theory applies in particular to any ``rational'' vertex operator algebra for which products of intertwining operators are known to be convergent in the appropriate regions, including the vertex operator algebras associated with the WZNW models, the minimal models and the moonshine module for the Monster. In this paper, we provide background and motiva…
For a commutative cocommutative Hopf algebra we study the relationship between a certain linear map defined via a bicharacter, an exponential of a quadratic differential operator and a $\bullet$ product obtained via twisting by a bicharacter. This new relationship between $\bullet$ products and exponentials of quadratic differential operators was inspired by studying the exponential of a particular quadratic differential operator introduced by I. Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman in "Vertex operator algebras and the Monster", and used in the theory of twisted modules of lattice vertex algebras.
We apply an idea of framed vertex operator algebras to a construction of local conformal nets of (injective type III_1) factors on the circle corresponding to various lattice vertex operator algebras and their twisted orbifolds. In particular, we give a local conformal net corresponding to the moonshine vertex operator algebras of Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman. Its central charge is 24, it has a trivial representation theory in the sense that the vacuum sector is the only irreducible DHR sector, its vacuum character is the modular invariant J-function and its automorphism group (the gauge group) is…
The new general upper bound mu <= [c/24] + 1 for the minimal weight mu of a self-dual vertex operator superalgebra of central charge c different from 47/2 is proven. For central charges c <= 48, further improved estimates are given and examples of with large minimal weight are discussed. We also study the case of vertex operator superalgebras with N=1 supersymmetry which was first considered by Witten in connection with three-dimensional quantum gravity. The upper bound mu^* <= (1/2)[c/12]+1/2 for the minimal superconformal weight is obtained for c different from 47/2. In addition, we show tha…
We discuss the classification of strongly regular vertex operator algebras (VOAs) with exactly three simple modules whose character vector satisfies a monic modular linear differential equation with irreducible monodromy. Our Main Theorem provides a classification of all such VOAs in the form of one infinite family of affine VOAs, one individual affine algebra and two Virasoro algebras, together with a family of eleven exceptional character vectors and associated data that we call the $U$-series. We prove that there are at least $15$ VOAs in the $U$-series occurring as commutants in a Schellek…
This dissertation answers some of the questions raised in Borcherds' papers on Moonshine and Lorentzian reflection groups. We prove (assuming an open conjecture of Burger, Li and Sarnak) that a Lorentzian reflection group with Weyl vector is associated to a vector-valued modular form. This result allows us to establish a folklore conjecture that the maximal dimension of a Lorentzian reflection group with Weyl vector is 26. In the case of elementary lattices, we show that these vector-valued forms can be obtained by inducing scalar-valued forms. This allows us to explain the critical signatures…
We consider unitary simple vertex operator algebras whose vertex operators satisfy certain energy bounds and a strong form of locality and call them strongly local. We present a general procedure which associates to every strongly local vertex operator algebra V a conformal net A_V acting on the Hilbert space completion of V and prove that the isomorphism class of A_V does not depend on the choice of the scalar product on V. We show that the class of strongly local vertex operator algebras is closed under taking tensor products and unitary subalgebras and that, for every strongly local vertex …
We examine the structure of spacetime symmetries of toroidally compactified string theory within the framework of noncommutative geometry. Following a proposal of Frohlich and Gawedzki, we describe the noncommutative string spacetime using a detailed algebraic construction of the vertex operator algebra. We show that the spacetime duality and discrete worldsheet symmetries of the string theory are a consequence of the existence of two independent Dirac operators, arising from the chiral structure of the conformal field theory. We demonstrate that these Dirac operators are also responsible for …
Assuming regularity of the fixed subalgebra, any action of a finite group $G$ on a holomorphic VOA $V$ determines a gauge anomaly $α\in \mathrm{H}^3(G; \boldsymbolμ)$, where $\boldsymbolμ \subset \mathbb{C}^\times$ is the group of roots of unity. We show that under Galois conjugation $V \mapsto {^γV}$, the gauge anomaly transforms as $α\mapsto γ^2(α)$. This provides an a priori upper bound of $24$ on the order of anomalies of actions preserving a $\mathbb{Q}$-structure, for example the Monster group $\mathbb{M}$ acting on its Moonshine VOA $V^\natural$. We speculate that each field $\mathbb{K}…
