With the aim of the discovery of face-centered-cubic (fcc) high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor, we have carried out materials research on Nb or Pb-containing multi-component alloys. Although the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of some Nb-containing samples exhibited the dominant fcc phases, no superconducting signals were observed down to 3 K. Examination with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer revealed that all samples were multi-phase, but the existence of several new Nb-containing HEA phases was found in them. It was confirmed that the synthesis of Pb-containing an HEA or quaternary alloy would be difficult, probably due to the large differences in the crystal structure and atomic radius among constituent elements, low reaction temperature and the lack of a rapid cooling process in the synthesis. Despite the negative results in this research, some hints for an improved strategy for the search for an fcc HEA superconductor are provided. Moreover, our results are useful as fundamental data for future HEA predictions or for studies of phase relations in Nb or Pb-containing multi-component alloys based on the CALPHAD (calculation of phase diagram) method.
Magnetic and transport properties of near-stoichiometric metastable FexMnyGaz alloys (46<x<52, 17<y25, 26<z<30) with face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and two-phase (FCC+BCC) structures are investigated. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of first-principles calculations of stoichiometric Fe2MnGa alloy with the L21, L12, and the tetragonally distorted L21 structural orderings. It is shown that the pure BCC and FCC phases have distinct magnetic and transport properties. Two-phase Fe2MnGa alloys have magnetic and transport properties typical of the mixed BCC and F…
A model lattice ab initio parameterised Hamiltonian spanning a broad range of alloy compositions and a large variety of chemical and magnetic configurations has been developed for face-centered cubic Fe-Ni alloys. Thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the alloys are explored using configuration and magnetic Monte Carlo simulations in a temperature range extending well over 1000 K.
A Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE) model for ternary face-centered cubic Fe-Ni-Cr alloys has been developed using DFT data spanning binary and ternary alloy configurations. Using this MCE model Hamiltonian, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and explore magnetic structures of alloys over the entire range of alloy compositions, considering both random and ordered alloy structures. In random alloys, the removal of magnetic collinearity constraint reduces the total magnetic moment but does not affect the predicted range of compositions where the alloys adopt low temperature ferromagnetic configur…
Grain boundaries have been shown to dramatically influence the behavior of relatively simple materials such as monatomic metals and binary alloys. The increased chemical complexity associated with multi-principal element alloys is hypothesized to lead to new grain boundary phenomena. To explore the relationship between grain boundary structure and chemistry in these materials, hybrid molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo simulations of a faceted Σ11 <110> tilt boundary, chosen to sample both high- and low-energy boundary configurations, are performed in face-centered cubic CrFeCoNiCu and CrFeCoNi equ…
Energy efficiency is motivating the search for new high-temperature metals. Some new body-centered-cubic random multicomponent "high entropy alloys (HEAs)" based on refractory elements (Cr-Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W-Hf-Ti-Zr) possess exceptional strengths at high temperatures but the physical origins of this outstanding behavior are not known. Here we show, using integrated neutron-diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and theory, that the high strength and strength retention of a NbTaVTi alloy and a new high-strength/low-density CrMoNbV alloy are attributable to edge d…
In traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) metals, the core properties of screw dislocations play a critical role in plastic deformation at low temperatures. Recently, much attention has been focused on refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which also possess bcc crystal structures. However, unlike face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs), there have been far fewer investigations on bcc HEAs, specifically on the possible effects of chemical short-range order (SRO) in these multiple principal element alloys on dislocation mobility. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the…
A simple fitting approach is used for modeling the compressive yield strength of body centered cubic (bcc) solid solution high entropy alloys in Al-Hf-Nb-Mo-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is proposed that the yield strength could be modeled by a polynomial where the experimental data can be used for finding the polynomial coefficients. The results show that the proposed polynomial could model the yield strength of solid solution alloys relatively well. The developed polynomial is used for predicting the strength of RHEAs in Hf-Mo-Nb-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is observed that the yield strength of alloys wi…
Linear complexions are defect states that have been recently discovered along dislocations in body centered cubic Fe-based alloys. In this work, we use atomistic simulations to extend this concept and explore segregation-driven structural transitions at dislocations in face centered cubic alloys. We identify a variety of stable, nanoscale-size structural and chemical states, which are confined near dislocations and can be classified as linear complexions. Depending on the alloy system and thermodynamic conditions, such new states can preserve, partially modify, or completely replace the origin…

The yield strengths of High Entropy Alloys have recently been correlated with measured picometer-scale atomic distortions. Here, the root mean square microdistortion in a multicomponent alloy is shown to be nearly proportional to the misfit-volume parameter that enters into a predictive model of solute strengthening. Analysis of two model ternary alloy families, face-centered cubic Cr-Fe-Ni and body-centered cubic Nb-Mo-V, demonstrates the correlation over a wide composition space. The reported correlation of yield strength with microdistortion is thus a consequence of the correlation between …
We here show by first principles theory that it is possible to achieve a structural and magnetic phase transition in common steel alloys like Fe$_{85}$Cr$_{15}$, by alloying with Ni or Mn. The predicted phase transition is from the ferromagnetic body centered cubic (bcc) phase to the paramagnetic face centered cubic (fcc) phase. The relatively high average magnetic moment of $\sim1.4μ_{B}$/atom predicted at the transition suggests that stainless steel potentially can present a magnetocaloric effect strong enough to make these alloys good candidates for refrigeration applications operating at a…
Linear complexions are defect phases that form in the presence of dislocations and thus are promising for the direct control of plasticity. In this study, atomistic simulations are used to model the effect of linear complexions on dislocation-based mechanisms for plasticity, demonstrating unique behaviors that differ from classical dislocation glide mechanisms. Linear complexions impart higher resistance to the initiation and continuation of dislocation motion when compared to solid solution strengthening in all of the face-centered cubic alloys investigated here, with the exact strengthening …
The influence of the physical mechanisms activated during deformation and annealing on the microstructure and texture evolution as well as on the mechanical properties in the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated. A combination of cold rolling and annealing was used to investigate the HEA in the deformed, recovered, partially recrystallized, and fully recrystallized states. Detailed microstructure and texture analysis was performed by electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties were evaluated us…
In this study, we report on face-centered cubic structured CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy thin films with finely dispersed nano-oxide particles which are formed by internal oxidation. Analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging found that the particles are Cr2O3. The oxide particles contribute to the hardening of the film increasing its hardness by 14% compared to that of the film without precipitates, through the Orowan-type strengthening mechanism. Our novel approach paves the way to design medium- and high-entropy alloys with high strength by making use of oxide phases.
We have grown a single crystal of the equiatomic FeCoCrMnAl high-entropy alloy. The crystal was grown by means of the Bridgman technique and is about 1 cm in diameter and 6.6 cm in length. X-ray Laue images taken at various positions on the surface are sharp and mutually consistent, reflecting its single-crystal nature. We thus report on the first successful growth of a single crystal of a high-entropy alloy with a volume of the order of cubic centimeters. The material has a microstructure consisting of B2 inclusions in a body-centered cubic matrix on the 10 nm length scale.
Phase diagrams supported by density functional theory methods can be crucial for designing high-entropy alloys that are subset of multi-principal$-$element alloys. We present phase and property analysis of quinary (MoW)$_{x}$Zr$_{y}$(TaTi)$_{1-x-y}$ refractory high-entropy alloys from combined Calculation of Phase Diagram (CALPHAD) and density-functional theory results, supplemented by molecular dynamics simulations. Both CALPHAD and density-functional theory analysis of phase stability indicates a Mo-W-rich region of this quinary has a stable single-phase body-centered-cubic structure. We rep…
The formation energy of the interface between face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close packed (hcp) structures is a key parameter in determining the stacking fault energy (SFE) of fcc metals and alloys using thermodynamic calculations. Often the contribution of the planar fault energy to the SFE has the same order of magnitude as the bulk part, and thus the lack of a precise information about it can become the limiting factor in thermodynamic predictions. Here, we differentiate between the actual interfacial energy for the coherent fcc(111)/hcp(0001) interface and the "pseudo-interfacial …
Short-range correlations in Ag-Pd alloys are investigated by analyzing the {\em ab initio} total energy of fcc based random Ag$_c$Pd$_{1-c}$. Since the information on the atomic interactions is incorporated in the energetics of alloys it is possible with a suitable model, Bethe-Peierls-Weiss model is used in the present work, to invert the problem, i.e.\ to obtain information on the short-range correlation from the total energy of a random system. As an example we demonstrate how site correlations can be extracted from random alloy data. Bethe-Peierls-Weiss model predicts positive first neighb…
We investigate the formation of stress hotspots in polycrystalline materials under uniaxial tensile deformation by integrating full field crystal plasticity based deformation models and machine learning techniques to gain data driven insights about microstructural properties. Synthetic 3D microstructures are created representing single phase equiaxed microstructures for generic copper alloys. Uniaxial tensile deformation is simulated using a 3-D full-field, image-based Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique with rate-sensitive crystal plasticity, to get local micro- mechanical fields (stress a…

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are materials that consist of equimolar or near-equimolar multiple principal components but tend to form single phases, which is a new research topic in the field of metallurgy, have attracted extensive attention in the past decade. The HEAs families contain the face-centered-cubic (fcc), body-centered-cubic (bcc), and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp)-structured HEAs. On one hand, mechanical properties, e.g. hardness, strength, ductility, fatigue, and elastic moduli, are essential for practical applications of HEAs. Scientists have explored in this direction since the ad…
New approaches for the design of alloy systems with multiprincipal elements is recently researched in refractory materials field. However, most research aimed at arc melting process with weakness of coarsening of grains and inhomogeneous microstructure of segregation of elements during the cooling. This study aims to design and fabricate high-entropy alloy with powder metallurgy. In this study, a refractory high entropy alloys with composition near AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr were produced by powder metallurgy. The alloy consists of two body-centered cubic (BCC) phases. One phase was disordered BCC enr…
Dimension reduction procedure is the recipe to represent defects in two dimensional dislocation dynamics according to the changes in the geometrical properties of the defects triggered by different conditions such as radiation, high temperature, or pressure. In the present study, this procedure is extended to incorporate further features related to the presence of defects with a special focus on face-centered cubic/body-centered cubic alloys used for diverse engineering purposes. In order to reflect the microstructural state of the alloy on the computational cell of two dimensional dislocation…
One of the challenges in fusion reactors is the discovery of plasma facing materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions, such as radiation damage and high heat flux. Development of fusion materials can be a daunting task since vast combinations of microstructures and compositions need to be explored, each of which requires trial-and-error based irradiation experiments and materials characterizations. Here, we utilize combinatorial experiments that allow rapid and systematic characterizations of composition-microstructure dependent irradiation damage behaviors of nanostructured tungsten…
In a narrow composition range centered at Zn74.5Au10.5Yb15.0, Tsai-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in alloys quenched from 880 C. This quasicrystal belongs to the primitive type with the 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D=7.378 A. The quasicrystal was not formed in the slowly cooled specimen, and was considered a metastable phase. The stable phase is a 2/1 approximant of the lattice parameter a2/1=23.271 A. This approximant forms exclusively in Zn76.0Au9.0Yb15.0 alloy annealed at 530 C. In addition, Zn70.5Au15.5Tb14.0 alloy annealed at 505 C forms a Tsai-type 1/1 approximant (a1/1=14.…
We present Monte Carlo simulations of surface induced disordering in a model of a binary alloy on a bcc lattice which undergoes a first order bulk transition from the ordered DO3 phase to the disordered A2 phase. The data are analyzed in terms of an effective interface Hamiltonian for a system with several order parameters in the framework of the linear renormalization approach due to Brezin, Halperin and Leibler. We show that the model provides a good description of the system in the vicinity of the interface. In particular, we recover the logarithmic divergence of the thickness of the disord…
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs), Multi-principal Component Alloys (MCA), or Compositionally Complex Alloys (CCAs) are alloys that contain multiple principal alloying elements. While many HEAs have been shown to have unique properties, their discovery has been largely done through costly and time-consuming trial-and-error approaches, with only an infinitesimally small fraction of the entire possible composition space having been explored. In this work, the exploration of the HEA composition space is framed as a Continuous Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CCSP) and solved using a novel Constraint Sat…
We explore the possibility of modifying the multiplicity of the basic cluster in the entropy functional used in the cluster variation method so that truncation errors owing to finite size of the basic cluster may be corrected. The numerical value of this multiplicity is found by requiring the modified CVM entropy functional (M-CVM) in the tetrahedron approximation for the body-centered cubic structure to yield the exact critical temperatures for ordering and phase separation. We demonstrate that very accurate values of the order parameter, correlation functions and the Gibbs function can be ob…
High-entropy alloys, near-equiatomic solid solutions of five or more elements, represent a new strategy for the design of materials with properties superior to those of conventional alloys. However, their phase space remains constrained, with transition metal high-entropy alloys exhibiting only face- or body-centered cubic structures. Here, we report the high-pressure synthesis of a hexagonal close-packed phase of the prototypical high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi. This martensitic transformation begins at 14 GPa and is attributed to suppression of the local magnetic moments, destabilizing the ini…
High-entropy alloys are an intriguing new class of metallic materials that derive their properties from being multi-element systems that can crystallize as a single phase, despite containing high concentrations of five or more elements with different crystal structures. Here we examine an equiatomic medium-entropy alloy containing only three elements, CrCoNi, as a single-phase face-centered cubic (fcc) solid solution, which displays strength-toughness properties that exceed those of all high-entropy alloys and most multi-phase alloys. At room temperature the alloy shows tensile strengths of al…
The high entropy alloy containing refractory metals Mo-Nb-Ta-W has a body centered cubic structure, which is not surprising given the complete mutual solubility in BCC solid solutions of all pairs of the constituent elements. However, first principles total energy calculations for the binaries reveal a set of distinct energy minimizing structures implying the likelihood of chemically ordered low temperature phases. We apply a hybrid Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics method to evaluate the temperature-dependent chemical order. At 300K a cesium-chloride ordering emerges between mixed (Nb,Ta) si…
We explore an opportunity to induce and control tetragonal distortion in materials. The idea involves formation of a binary alloy from parent compounds having body-centered and face-centered symmetries. The concept is illustrated in the case of FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ magnetic alloy formed by substitutional doping of the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet with Co. Using electronic structure calculations we demonstrate that the tetragonal strain in this system can be controlled by concentration and it reaches maximum for $x=0.5$. This finding is then applied to create a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE) in …
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are multicomponent compounds whose high configurational entropy allows them to solidify into a single phase, with a simple crystal lattice structure. Some HEA's exhibit desirable properties, such as high specific strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, while challenging the scientist to make confident predictions in the face of multiple competing phases. We demonstrate phase stability in the multicomponent alloy system of Cr-Mo-Nb-V, for which some of its binary subsystems are subject to phase separation and complex intermetallic-phase formation. Our first-pri…
Binary alloy phases of the noble metals with main group elements are analyzed in relation to body centered cubic structure with orthorhombic and hexagonal distortions. Stability of these distorted phases is considered on the base of the Fermi sphere - Brillouin zone interaction to understand the important part of the band structure energy contribution to the overall crystal energy. Examination of Brillouin zone - Fermi sphere configurations for several representative phases has shown significance of the electron energy contribution in the formation of distorted structures with superlattices an…
Despite the composition close to glassy forming alloys, face centered cubic (FCC) Co81.8Si9.1B9.1, designed based on Co9B atomic cluster (polyhedral), are synthesized as singlephase ribbons successfully. These ribbons, with grain sizes of ca. 92 nm, show supreme ductility and strong orientation along (111), which couples with shape anisotropy leading to high magnetocrystalline anisotropy comparable to Co rich Co-Pt nanoscale thin films, with a coercivity of 430 Oe and squareness of 0.82 at room temperature. The stability and magnetic behaviors of the phase are discussed based on experimental e…
A simple fitting approach is introduced for modeling the strength (hardness) of quaternary and quinary face-centered cubic (fcc) solid solution high entropy alloys (HEAs) in Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni system. It is proposed that the strength of solid solution HEAs could be modeled by a polynomial equation where experimental data are used for finding the coefficients of polynomial. It is observed that the proposed polynomial could model the strength of solid solution HEAs very well. Effects of constituent elements on the hardness of quinary Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys are investigated; the results indicate that …
The structure and properties of the ferromagnet Tb_{1-x}Dy_xFe_2 (Terfenol-D) are explored through the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) separating ferroic phases of differing symmetry. Our synchrotron data support a first order structural transition, with a broadening MPB width at higher temperatures. The optimal point for magnetomechanical applications is not centered on the MPB but lies on the rhombohedral side, where the high striction of the rhombohedral majority phase combines with the softened anisotropy of the MPB. We compare our findings with single ion crystal field theory and with f…
Developing a single-phase and nanograined refractory high-entropy alloy ZrHfNbTaW with ultrahigh hardness by phase transformation via high-pressure torsion
Whereas exceptional mechanical and radiation performances have been found in the emergent medium- and high-entropy alloys (MEAs and HEAs), the importance of their complex atomic environment, reflecting diversity in atomic size and chemistry, to defect transport has been largely unexplored at the atomic level. Here we adopt a local structure approach based on the atomic pair distribution function measurements in combination with density functional theory calculations to investigate a series of body-centered cubic (BCC) MEAs and HEAs. Our results demonstrate that all alloys exhibit local lattice…
Phase selection in Ti-Zr-Hf-Al high-entropy alloys was investigated by in-situ high-energy X$-$ray diffraction, single-crystal X$-$ray diffraction, and density-functional theory based electronic-structure methods that address disorder and vacancies, predicting formation enthalpy and chemical short-range order (SRO). Samples with varying Al content were synthesized, characterized, and computationally assessed to ascertain the composition-dependent phase selection, as increased Al content often acts as a stabilizer of a body-centered-cubic structure. Equiatomic TiZrHfAl was especially interestin…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs), and even medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), are an intriguing class of materials in that structure and property relations can be controlled via alloying and chemical disorder over wide ranges in the composition space. Employing density-functional theory combined with the coherent-potential approximation to average over all chemical configurations, we tune free energies between face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phases in Fe$_{x}$Mn$_{80-x}$Co$_{10}$Cr$_{10}$ systems.~Within Fe-Mn-based alloys, we show that the martensitic transformation and chemic…
