A Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE) model for ternary face-centered cubic Fe-Ni-Cr alloys has been developed using DFT data spanning binary and ternary alloy configurations. Using this MCE model Hamiltonian, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and explore magnetic structures of alloys over the entire range of alloy compositions, considering both random and ordered alloy structures. In random alloys, the removal of magnetic collinearity constraint reduces the total magnetic moment but does not affect the predicted range of compositions where the alloys adopt low temperature ferromagnetic configurations. During alloying of ordered fcc Fe-Ni compounds with Cr, chromium atoms tend to replace nickel rather than iron atoms. Replacement of Ni by Cr in alloys with high iron content increases the Curie temperature of the alloys. This can be explained by strong antiferromagnetic Fe-Cr coupling, similar to that found in bcc Fe-Cr solutions, where the Curie temperature increase, predicted by simulations as a function of Cr concentration, is confirmed by experimental observations.
Magnetic and transport properties of near-stoichiometric metastable FexMnyGaz alloys (46<x<52, 17<y25, 26<z<30) with face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and two-phase (FCC+BCC) structures are investigated. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of first-principles calculations of stoichiometric Fe2MnGa alloy with the L21, L12, and the tetragonally distorted L21 structural orderings. It is shown that the pure BCC and FCC phases have distinct magnetic and transport properties. Two-phase Fe2MnGa alloys have magnetic and transport properties typical of the mixed BCC and F…
A model lattice ab initio parameterised Hamiltonian spanning a broad range of alloy compositions and a large variety of chemical and magnetic configurations has been developed for face-centered cubic Fe-Ni alloys. Thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the alloys are explored using configuration and magnetic Monte Carlo simulations in a temperature range extending well over 1000 K.
Grain boundaries have been shown to dramatically influence the behavior of relatively simple materials such as monatomic metals and binary alloys. The increased chemical complexity associated with multi-principal element alloys is hypothesized to lead to new grain boundary phenomena. To explore the relationship between grain boundary structure and chemistry in these materials, hybrid molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo simulations of a faceted Σ11 <110> tilt boundary, chosen to sample both high- and low-energy boundary configurations, are performed in face-centered cubic CrFeCoNiCu and CrFeCoNi equ…
Energy efficiency is motivating the search for new high-temperature metals. Some new body-centered-cubic random multicomponent "high entropy alloys (HEAs)" based on refractory elements (Cr-Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W-Hf-Ti-Zr) possess exceptional strengths at high temperatures but the physical origins of this outstanding behavior are not known. Here we show, using integrated neutron-diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and theory, that the high strength and strength retention of a NbTaVTi alloy and a new high-strength/low-density CrMoNbV alloy are attributable to edge d…
Starting with empirical tight-binding band structures, the branch-point (BP) energies and resulting valence band offsets (VBOs) for the zincblende phase of InN, GaN and AlN are calculated from their k-averaged midgap energy. Furthermore, the directional dependence of the BPs of GaN and AlN is discussed using the Green's function method of Tersoff. We then show how to obtain the BPs for binary semiconductor alloys within a band-diagonal representation of the coherent potential approximation (CPA) and apply this method to cubic AlGaN alloys. The resulting band offsets show good agreement to avai…
In traditional body-centered cubic (bcc) metals, the core properties of screw dislocations play a critical role in plastic deformation at low temperatures. Recently, much attention has been focused on refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which also possess bcc crystal structures. However, unlike face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs), there have been far fewer investigations on bcc HEAs, specifically on the possible effects of chemical short-range order (SRO) in these multiple principal element alloys on dislocation mobility. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the…
A simple fitting approach is used for modeling the compressive yield strength of body centered cubic (bcc) solid solution high entropy alloys in Al-Hf-Nb-Mo-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is proposed that the yield strength could be modeled by a polynomial where the experimental data can be used for finding the polynomial coefficients. The results show that the proposed polynomial could model the yield strength of solid solution alloys relatively well. The developed polynomial is used for predicting the strength of RHEAs in Hf-Mo-Nb-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is observed that the yield strength of alloys wi…
With the aim of the discovery of face-centered-cubic (fcc) high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor, we have carried out materials research on Nb or Pb-containing multi-component alloys. Although the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of some Nb-containing samples exhibited the dominant fcc phases, no superconducting signals were observed down to 3 K. Examination with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer revealed that all samples were multi-phase, but the existence of several new Nb-containing HEA phases was found in them. It was confirmed that the synthesis of Pb-containing an HEA or quaterna…
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit hysteresis behaviors upon stress and temperature induced loadings. In this contribution, we focus on numerical simulations of microstructure evolution of cubic-to-tetragonal martensitic phase transformations in SMAs in 3D settings under the dynamic loading conditions. A phase-field (PF) model has been developed to capture coupled dynamic thermo-mechanical behavior of such SMA structures and the system of governing equations have been solved numerically using the isogeometric analysis. Temperature induced reverse and forward transformations have been applied t…
Based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we analyze the chemical and magnetic mechanisms stabilizing the cubic phase in Fe$_2$-based Heusler materials, which were previously predicted to be tetragonal when being chemically ordered. In agreement with recent experimental data, we found that these compounds crystallize within the so-called "inverted" cubic Heusler structure perturbed by a certain portion of the intrinsic chemical disorder. Understanding these mechanisms is a necessary step to guide towards the successful future synthesis of the stable Fe$_2$-based tetragonal p…
Linear complexions are defect states that have been recently discovered along dislocations in body centered cubic Fe-based alloys. In this work, we use atomistic simulations to extend this concept and explore segregation-driven structural transitions at dislocations in face centered cubic alloys. We identify a variety of stable, nanoscale-size structural and chemical states, which are confined near dislocations and can be classified as linear complexions. Depending on the alloy system and thermodynamic conditions, such new states can preserve, partially modify, or completely replace the origin…
We screened six cobalt-based 18-VEC systems CoVSi, CoNbSi, CoTaSi (Si-group) and CoVGe, CoNbGe, CoTaGe (Ge-group) by the first-principles approach, with the motivation of stabilizing these orthorhombic phases into the cubic symmetry -- favorable for thermoelectrics. Remarkably, it was found that the Ge-group is energetically more favorable in the cubic symmetry than the hitherto orthorhombic phase. We account the cubic ground state of the Si-group to the interplay of internal pressure and covalent interactions. The principle of covalent interactions will provide an insight and could be vital i…
New perspective cubic quasi-alloys CdO/MgO short period superlattices were grown on sapphire substrates by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Their crystal quality was characterized using High Resolution X-ray Diffraction (HRXRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques. The thickness and growth rate of MgO and CdO individual layers have been extracted. Small angle X-ray diffraction peaks corresponding to the period of the superlattices ranging from 0.6 to 5 nm were clearly observed. From the XRD measurements we obtain 65% relaxation to the substrate of superlattice (SL) in S…
We expand our study on cubic BiFeO$_3$ alloys presented in [K. Koumpouras and I. Galanakis, \textit{J. Magn. Magn. Mater} 323, 2328 (2011)] to include also the BiMnO$_3$ and Bi$_2$MnFeO$_6$ alloys. For the latter we considered three different cases of distribution of the Fe-Mn atoms in the lattice and six possible magnetic configurations. We show that Fe and Mn atoms in all cases under study retain a large spin magnetic moment, the magnitude of which exceeds the 3 $μ_B$. Their electronic and magnetic properties are similar to the ones in the parent BiMnO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$ compounds. Thus oxyge…
A machine learning approach that we term the `Stochastic Replica Voting Machine' (SRVM) algorithm is presented and applied to a binary and a 3-class classification problems in materials science. Here, we employ SRVM to predict candidate compounds capable of forming stable perovskites and double perovskites and further classify binary ($AB$) solids. The results of our binary and ternary classifications compared well to those obtained by SVM and neural network algorithms.

Pressure-induced transitions from ordered intermetallic phases to substitutional alloys to semi-ordered phases were studied in a series of bismuth tellurides. Using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, the compounds Bi4Te5, BiTe, and Bi2Te were observed to form alloys with the disordered body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure upon compression to above 14--19 GPa at room temperature. The BiTe and Bi2Te alloys and the previously discovered high-pressure alloys of Bi2Te3 and Bi4Te3 were all found to show atomic ordering after gentle annealing at very moderate temperatures of ~100°C. Upon anne…

A P-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in Au-Al-Yb alloy of which 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D = 7.448 Å. The composition of the quasicrystal was analyzed to be Au51Al34Yb15. This quasicrystal is formed in as-cast alloys, and is regarded as metastable because of decomposition into other crystalline phases by annealing at 700 \degree C. Among Tsai-type quasicrystals, this quasicrystal is situated just between Zn-Sc group with smaller a6D and larger Cd-Yb group. Intermediate valence of Yb recently observed in this quasicrystal may be due to this unique situation, namely smaller major…
Ternary and quaternary cubic c-AlxIn1-xN/GaN and c-AlxGayIn1-x-y/GaN heterostructures lattice-matched to c-GaN on freestanding 3C-SiC substrates were grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The c-AlxGayIn1-x-y alloy permits the independent control of band gap and lattice parameter. The ternary and quaternary films were grown at 620 C. Different alloy compositions were obtained by varying the Al and Ga fluxes. The alloy composition was measured by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS). X-ray reciprocal space map of asymmetric (-1-13…
The yield strengths of High Entropy Alloys have recently been correlated with measured picometer-scale atomic distortions. Here, the root mean square microdistortion in a multicomponent alloy is shown to be nearly proportional to the misfit-volume parameter that enters into a predictive model of solute strengthening. Analysis of two model ternary alloy families, face-centered cubic Cr-Fe-Ni and body-centered cubic Nb-Mo-V, demonstrates the correlation over a wide composition space. The reported correlation of yield strength with microdistortion is thus a consequence of the correlation between …
An equation has been derived to predict unit cell volume of high entropy alloys, HEA, by two different methods. Both treatments led to the same equation. For cubic HEA lattice parameters were calculated. The predicted lattice parameters were compared with those reported for 68 HEAs. Lattice parameters were also calculated using the equivalent of Vegards law for these alloys. Average errors were 0.52, and 0.42 when Vegards law, and the equation derived in this work were used, respectively.
We here show by first principles theory that it is possible to achieve a structural and magnetic phase transition in common steel alloys like Fe$_{85}$Cr$_{15}$, by alloying with Ni or Mn. The predicted phase transition is from the ferromagnetic body centered cubic (bcc) phase to the paramagnetic face centered cubic (fcc) phase. The relatively high average magnetic moment of $\sim1.4μ_{B}$/atom predicted at the transition suggests that stainless steel potentially can present a magnetocaloric effect strong enough to make these alloys good candidates for refrigeration applications operating at a…
Linear complexions are defect phases that form in the presence of dislocations and thus are promising for the direct control of plasticity. In this study, atomistic simulations are used to model the effect of linear complexions on dislocation-based mechanisms for plasticity, demonstrating unique behaviors that differ from classical dislocation glide mechanisms. Linear complexions impart higher resistance to the initiation and continuation of dislocation motion when compared to solid solution strengthening in all of the face-centered cubic alloys investigated here, with the exact strengthening …
Distinct shortcomings of individual halide perovskites for solar applications, such as restricted range of band gaps, propensity of ABX3 to decompose into AX+BX2, or oxidation of 2ABX3 into A2BX6 have led to the need to consider alloys of individual perovskites. This creates a non-trivial material-selection problem, spanning a continuum of three sets of compositions (one for each sub lattice), and requiring control of phase-separation or ordering in each alloyed subfield. Not surprisingly, material and structure choices were made thus far mostly via trial-and-error explorations. We use ideas f…
The first-principles calculations of the electronic structures and the interband optical conductivity (OC) spectra have been performed for the stoichiometric Fe$_{2}$MnGa alloy with L2$_{1}$ and L1$_{2}$ types of atomic ordering. The calculated optical properties of Fe$_{2}$MnGa alloy for the L2$_{1}$ and L1$_{2}$ phases are complemented by the experimental OC spectra for bulk and thin film Fe-Mn-Ga alloy samples near the stoichiometry 2:1:1 with L2$_{1}$ and L1$_{2}$ (for bulks) as well as the body-centered-cubic and face-centered-cubic (for films) structures, respectively. A reasonable agree…
A face-centered cubic (FCC) phase in electro-polished specimens for transmission electron microscopy of commercially pure titanium has sometimes been reported. Here, a combination of atom-probe tomography, scanning transmission electron microscopy and low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy is employed to study both the crystal structural and chemical composition of this FCC phase. Our results prove that the FCC phase is actually a TiHx (x>1) hydride, and not a new allotrope of Ti, in agreement with previous reports. The formation of the hydride is discussed.
Binary alloy phases of the noble metals with main group elements are analyzed in relation to body centered cubic structure with orthorhombic and hexagonal distortions. Stability of these distorted phases is considered on the base of the Fermi sphere - Brillouin zone interaction to understand the important part of the band structure energy contribution to the overall crystal energy. Examination of Brillouin zone - Fermi sphere configurations for several representative phases has shown significance of the electron energy contribution in the formation of distorted structures with superlattices an…
In this paper, we developed a thermodynamically consistent approach to account for the Gibbs energy of pure metallic element with thermal vacancy over wide temperature range. Taking body centered cubic (bcc) W for a demonstration, the strong nonlinear increase for temperature dependence of heat capacities at high temperatures and a nonlinear Arrhenius plots of vacancy concentration in bcc W can be nicely reproduced by the obtained Gibbs energy. The successful description of thermal vacancy on abnormal thermodynamic behaviors in bcc W indicates that the presently proposed thermodynamically cons…
We have grown a single crystal of the equiatomic FeCoCrMnAl high-entropy alloy. The crystal was grown by means of the Bridgman technique and is about 1 cm in diameter and 6.6 cm in length. X-ray Laue images taken at various positions on the surface are sharp and mutually consistent, reflecting its single-crystal nature. We thus report on the first successful growth of a single crystal of a high-entropy alloy with a volume of the order of cubic centimeters. The material has a microstructure consisting of B2 inclusions in a body-centered cubic matrix on the 10 nm length scale.
Using first principles calculations based on density functional theory, we study the geometric, electronic, and magnetic properties of Pt, Ni and Co-based half Heusler alloys, namely, Pt$BC$, Ni$BC$ and Co$BC$ ($B$ = Cr, Mn and Fe; $C$ = Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Se, In, Sn, Sb and Te). We calculate the formation energy of these alloys in various crystal symmetries, which include, the (face-centered) cubic $C1_{b}$ ($F\bar{4}$3m), orthorhombic ($Pnma$), as well as hexagonal ($P\bar{6}2m$ and $P6_{3}/mmc$) structures. It has been observed that out of all the 108 structures, studied here, energe…
According to classical grain growth laws, grain growth is driven by the minimization of surface energy and will continue until a single grain prevails. These laws do not take into account the lattice anisotropy and the details of the microscopic rearrangement of mass between grains. Here we consider coarsening of body-centered cubic polycrystalline materials in three dimensions using the phase field crystal model. We observe as function of the quenching depth, a cross over between a state where grain rotation halts and the growth stagnates and a state where grains coarsen rapidly by coalescenc…
By means of ab initio calculations within the density functional theory, we have found that B80 fullerenes can condense to form stable face-centered-cubic fcc solids. It is shown that when forming a crystal, B80 cages are geometrically distorted, the Ih symmetry is lowered to Th, and four boron-boron chemical bonds are formed between every two nearest neighbor B80 cages. The cohesive energy of B80 fcc solid is 0.23 eV/atom with respect to the isolated B80 fullerene. The calculated electronic structure reveals that the fcc B80 solid is a metal. The predicted solid phase would constitute a form …
Nb-Ru is a high temperature shape memory alloy that undergoes a Martensitic transformation from a parent cubic b-phase into a tetragonal b' phase at TM 900 C. Measurements of the phonon dispersion curves show that the [110]-TA2 phonon branch, corresponding in the q=0 limit to the elastic constant C'=1/2(C11-C12) has an anomalous temperature dependence. Nearly the entire branch softens with decreasing temperature as TM is approached. The temperature dependence of the low-q phonon energies suggests that the elastic constants would approach 0 as T approaches TM, indicating a second order transiti…
Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out to investigate the deformation behaviour of <110>/{111} body centered cubic (BCC) Fe nanowires under tensile and compressive loading. An embedded atom method (EAM) potential was used to describe the interatomic interactions. The simulations were carried out at 10 K with a constant strain rate of $1\times10^{8}$ $s^{-1}$. The results indicate a significant differences in deformation mechanisms under tensile and compressive loading. Under tensile loading, the deformation occurs by the slip of full dislocations, While under compressive loa…
The influence of the physical mechanisms activated during deformation and annealing on the microstructure and texture evolution as well as on the mechanical properties in the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated. A combination of cold rolling and annealing was used to investigate the HEA in the deformed, recovered, partially recrystallized, and fully recrystallized states. Detailed microstructure and texture analysis was performed by electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties were evaluated us…
We have investigated the thermoelasticity of body-centered cubic (bcc) tantalum from first principles by using the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) and mixed--basis pseudopotential methods for pressures up to 400 GPa and temperatures up to 10000 K. Electronic excitation contributions to the free energy were included from the band structures, and phonon contributions were included using the particle-in-a-cell (PIC) model. The computed elastic constants agree well with available ultrasonic and diamond anvil cell data at low pressures, and shock data at high pressures. The shear modulus $c_…
Body-centred cubic (BCC) transition metals tend to be brittle at low temperatures, posing significant challenges in processing and major concerns for damage tolerance. The brittleness is largely dictated by the screw dislocation core; the nature and control of which remain a puzzle after nearly a century. Here, we introduce a physics-based material index \{chi}, the energy difference between BCC and face-centred-cubic structures, that guides manipulation of core properties. The lattice friction and nucleation barrier have near-linear scaling with \{chi} and the core transforms from non-degener…
Composite quantum materials are the ideal examples of multifunctional systems which simultaneously host more than one novel quantum phenomenon in physics. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study to demonstrate the presence of an extremely large exchange bias in the range 0.8 T - 2.7 T and a fully compensated magnetic state (FCF) in a special type of Pt and Ni doped Mn$_3$In cubic alloy. Here, oppositely aligned uncompensated moments in two different atomic clusters sum up to zero which are responsible for the FCF state. Our Density functional theory (DFT) calculations sh…
Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we have studied the mechanical, electronic, and magnetic properties of Heusler alloys, namely, Ni$_{2}BC$ and Co$_{2}BC$ ($B$ = Sc, Ti, V, Cr and Mn as well as Y, Zr, Nb, Mo and Tc; $C$ = Ga and Sn). On the basis of electronic structure (density of states) and mechanical properties (tetragonal shear constant), as well as magnetic interactions (Heisenberg exchange coupling parameters), we probe the properties of these materials in detail. We calculate the formation energy of these alloys in the (face-centered) cubic austeni…
Using \textit{ab initio} calculation, we investigate systematically the structural and electronic properties of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.50). Here, projector augmented wave approach (PAW) implemented in the Vienna \textit{ab initio} simulation package (VASP) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional has been used. In this article, it is reported that though Ni$_{2}$NbSn and Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.25}$Sn$_{0.75}$ have no structural transformation, Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$ can transform to tetragonal structure from cubic L2$_{1}$ ph…
Plastic deformations in body-centered-cubic (BCC) crystals have been of critical importance in diverse engineering and manufacturing contexts across length scales. Numerous experiments and atomistic simulations on BCC crystals reveal that classical crystal plasticity models with the Schmid law are not adequate to account for abnormal plastic deformations often found in these crystals. In this paper, we address a continuum mechanical treatment of anomalous plasticity in BCC crystals exhibiting non-Schmid effects, inspired from atomistic simulations recently reported. Specifically, anomalous fea…
The threshold displacement energy (TDE) is the minimum amount of kinetic energy required to displace an atom from its lattice site. The magnitude of the TDE displays significant variance as a function of the crystallographic direction, system temperature and applied strain, among a variety of other factors. It is critically important to determine an accurate value of the TDE in order to calculate the total number of displacements due to a given irradiation condition, and thus to understand the materials response to irradiation. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations have been performed …
For topological insulators and topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), their exotic surface states are promising for fundamental condensed matter physics research as well as future electronics such as low-dissipation electronics and spintronics. However, the high bulk carrier density that often dominates the transport property is the major materials challenge, critically hindering our ability to study and manipulate the surface states. In this manuscript, we demonstrate an alloying strategy, SnSexTe1-x, to effectively reduce the bulk carrier density. As long as SnSexTe1-x remains in the cub…
Radiation damage in body-centered cubic (BCC) Fe has been extensively studied by computer simulations to quantify effects of temperature, impinging particle energy, and the presence of extrinsic particles. However, limited investigation has been conducted into the effects of mechanical stresses and strain. In a reactor environment, structural materials are often mechanically strained, and an expanded understanding of how this strain affects the generation of defects may be important for predicting microstructural evolution and damage accumulation under such conditions. In this study, we have p…
In this study we discuss the performance of approximate SQS supercell models in describing the cubic elastic properties of B1 (rocksalt) Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N alloy by using a symmetry based projection technique. We show on the example of Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N alloy, that this projection technique can be used to align the differently shaped and sized SQS structures for a comparison in modeling elasticity. Moreover, we focus to accurately determine the cubic elastic constants and Zener's type elastic anisotropy of Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N. Our best supercell model, that captures accurately both th…
Recent experiments discovered an order-disorder transition occuring at low temperatures in large unit 1/1 cell cubic approximants of the stable Cd-based binary alloy quasicrystals. The transition is related to correlations among orientational degrees of freedom whose separations are around 12 Å. We analyze the interactions between the degrees of freedom using {\em ab-initio} calculations for Cd-Ca alloys and derive an equivalent antiferromagnetic Ising model which shows a similar phase transition. However, the calculated transition temperature is higher than observed experimentally, indicating…
The origin of the spin-glass state in (Fe,Sn)4N alloys is studied on the basis of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with parameters derived from first principles within the magnetic force theorem applied in the framework of the disordered local moments method and local spin-density approximation. We show that in the alloy concentration range where the spin-glass state is stable only one Fe sublattice is intrinsically magnetic and the interatomic exchange magnetic interactions are essentially short ranged due to effects of chemical and magnetic disorder. The magnetic Fe atoms with well-localized spin mo…
