A simple fitting approach is introduced for modeling the strength (hardness) of quaternary and quinary face-centered cubic (fcc) solid solution high entropy alloys (HEAs) in Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni system. It is proposed that the strength of solid solution HEAs could be modeled by a polynomial equation where experimental data are used for finding the coefficients of polynomial. It is observed that the proposed polynomial could model the strength of solid solution HEAs very well. Effects of constituent elements on the hardness of quinary Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys are investigated; the results indicate that the strength of alloys decreases with increasing the Fe content. The softening effect of Fe is explained by considering its effect on decreasing the shear modulus of alloys. Furthermore, the effects of parameters enthalpy of mixing and valence electron concentration on the strength of HEAs are investigated. The results show that the enthalpy of mixing has a noticeable effect on the hardness of quinary Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys and the strength increases with decreasing the enthalpy of mixing. Furthermore, the results show that hardness of quinary Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys increases with increasing the parameter valence electron concentration.
A phase-field formulation is introduced to simulate quantitatively microstructural pattern formation in alloys. The thin-interface limit of this formulation yields a much less stringent restriction on the choice of interface thickness than previous formulations and permits to eliminate non-equilibrium effects at the interface. Dendrite growth simulations with vanishing solid diffusivity show that both the interface evolution and the solute profile in the solid are well resolved.
Nickel-based superalloys and near-equiatomic high-entropy alloys containing Molybdenum are known for higher temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Yet, complex solid-solution alloys offer a huge design space to tune for optimal properties at slightly reduced entropy. For refractory Mo-W-Ta-Ti-Zr, we showcase KKR electronic-structure methods via the coherent-potential approximation to identify alloys over 5-dimensional design space with improved mechanical properties and necessary global (formation enthalpy) and local (short-range order) stability. Deformation is modeled with classical …
Practical applications of nanocrystalline metallic thin films are often limited by instabilities. In addition to grain growth, the thin film itself can become unstable and collapse into islands through solid-state dewetting. Selective alloying can improve nanocrystalline stability, but the impact of this approach on dewetting is not clear. In this study, two alloys that exhibit nanocrystalline thermal stability as ball milled powders are evaluated as thin films. While both alloys demonstrated dewetting behavior following annealing, the severity decreased in more dilute compositions. Ultimately…
We report on the discovery of a high-entropy alloy with a hexagonal crystal structure. Equiatomic samples in the alloy system Ho-Dy-Y-Gd-Tb were found to solidify as homogeneous single-phase high-entropy alloys. The results of our electron diffraction investigations and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy are consistent with a Mg-type hexagonal structure. The possibility of hexagonal high-entropy alloys in other alloy systems is discussed.
A high-throughput methodology is proposed, based on the combination of diffusion couples and advanced nanomechanical testing methods, to directly measure alloying effects on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of individual deformation modes in Mg alloys. The methodology is tested in Mg-Zn alloys by assessing the alloying effects, up to Zn contents of 2 at.%, on basal slip, extension twining and pyramidal slip in two metallurgical condition: as-quenched, for which the Zn solute atoms remain homogenously dispersed in solid solution; and peak-aged, for which the Zn atoms form rod-shape $Mg…
One of the main drawbacks of the powder metallurgy route for High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) is the unavailability of fully pre-alloyed powders in the market. Using commodity powders (commercial Ni, Fe and Co base fully pre-alloyed powders, fully available in large quantities and at competitive prices) to produce HEAs presents a completely new and competitive scenario for obtaining viable alloys for high-performance applications.
A simple fitting approach is used for modeling the compressive yield strength of body centered cubic (bcc) solid solution high entropy alloys in Al-Hf-Nb-Mo-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is proposed that the yield strength could be modeled by a polynomial where the experimental data can be used for finding the polynomial coefficients. The results show that the proposed polynomial could model the yield strength of solid solution alloys relatively well. The developed polynomial is used for predicting the strength of RHEAs in Hf-Mo-Nb-Ta-Ti-V-Zr system. It is observed that the yield strength of alloys wi…
The possibility of solid solution formation in high entropy alloys (HEAs) has been calculated for alloys with four to seven elements, using a rule previously reported. Thirty elements were included: transition elements of the fourth, fifth and sixth periods of the periodic table, and aluminum. A total of 2,799,486 systems were analyzed. The percentage of solid solutions that would be formed in HEAs decreases from 35.9% to 26.4%, as the number of elements increases from four to seven. The structure of the solid solutions, fcc, bcc or a mixture of fcc and bcc, that would be formed, has been pred…
The lattice dynamics for NiCo, NiFe, NiFeCo, NiFeCoCr, and NiFeCoCrMn medium to high entropy alloy have been investigated using the DFT calculation. The phonon dispersions along three different symmetry directions are calculated by the weighted dynamical matrix (WDM) approach and compared with the supercell approach and inelastic neutron scattering. We could correctly predict the trend of increasing of the vibrational entropy by adding the alloys and the highest vibrational entropy in NiFeCoCrMn high entropy alloy by WDM approach. The averaged first nearest neighbor (1NN) force constants betwe…
The effect of nonequilibrium solute trapping by a growing solid under rapid solidification conditions is studied using a phase-field model. Considering a continuous steady-state concentration profile across the diffuse solid-liquid interface, a new definition of the nonequilibrium partition coefficient in the phase-field context is introduced. This definition leads, in particular for high growth velocities, to a better description of the available experimental data in comparison with other diffuse interface and sharp-interface predictions.
In this communication,we propose a sustainable way to produce high entropy alloys from alloy scraps called Alloy mixing. We successfully demonstrate this method using a near equimolar CrCuFeMnNi HEA. Alloy scraps (304L stainless steel, Nichrome 80 and electrical wire grade Copper) obtained from various sources were melted together using vacuum arc melting along with minor additions of Mn and Cr to achieve the equiatomic composition. The alloy was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy, which confirmed that the alloy produced through Alloy mixing exhibits a m…
We use a phase-field model to study the effect of confinement on dendritic growth, in a pure material solidifying in an undercooled melt, and in the directional solidification of a dilute binary alloy. Specifically, we observe the effect of varying the vertical domain extent ($δ$) on tip selection, by quantifying the dendrite tip velocity and curvature as a function of $δ$, and other process parameters. As $δ$ decreases, we find that the operating state of the dendrite tips becomes significantly affected by the presence of finite boundaries. For particular boundary conditions, we observe a swi…
The liquid-solid diffusion couple technique, supported by phenomenological analysis and nano-indentation tests, is proposed on account of the relatively low melting points of Mg to explore the diffusion mobility and creep deformation. The potential of this strategy is demonstrated in Mg-Ga hcp alloys where Ga solute (i.e. impurity) and Mg solvent diffusions in hcp Mg-Ga alloys were both unveiled. It was followed by mapping the compressive creep behavior via nanoindentation along the composition arrays within the same Mg-Ga couple sample. The compressive creep resistance of Mg-Ga hcp alloys inc…
Whilst it has long been known that disorder profoundly affects transport properties, recent measurements on a series of solid solution 3d-transition metal alloys reveal two orders of magnitude variations in the residual resistivity. Using ab-initio methods, we demonstrate that, while the carrier density of all alloys is as high as in normal metals, the electron mean-free-path can vary from ~10 Å (strong scattering limit) to ~10$^3$ Å (weak scattering limit). Here, we delineate the underlying electron scattering mechanisms responsible for this disparate behavior. While spin dependent site-diago…
We report on the production and characterization of a high-entropy alloy in the refractory Zr-Nb-Ti-V-Hf system. Equiatomic ingots were produced by arc and levitation melting, and were subsequently homogenized by high-temperature annealing. We obtained a coarse-grained, single-phase high-entropy alloy, with a homogeneous distribution of the constituting elements. The phase is a chemically disordered solid solution, based on a bcc lattice with a lattice parameter of 0.336(5) nm.
High-entropy alloys are solid solutions of multiple principal elements, capable of reaching composition and feature regimes inaccessible for dilute materials. Discovering those with valuable properties, however, relies on serendipity, as thermodynamic alloy design rules alone often fail in high-dimensional composition spaces. Here, we propose an active-learning strategy to accelerate the design of novel high-entropy Invar alloys in a practically infinite compositional space, based on very sparse data. Our approach works as a closed-loop, integrating machine learning with density-functional the…
Two new, low activation high entropy alloys (HEAs) TiVZrTa and TiVCrTa are studied for use as in-core, structural nuclear materials for in-core nuclear applications. Low-activation is a desirable property for nuclear reactors, in an attempt to reduce the amount of high level radioactive waste upon decommissioning, and for consideration in fusion applications. The alloy TiVNbTa is used as a starting composition to develop two new HEAs; TiVZrTa and TiVCrTa. The new alloys exhibit comparable indentation hardness and modulus, to the TiVNbTa alloy in the as-cast state. After heavy ion implantation t…
Diffusion of atoms in solids is one of the most fundamental kinetic processes that ultimately governs many materials properties. Here, we report on a combined first-principles and kinetic Monte Carlo study of macroscopic diffusion properties of disordered Ti-Ta alloys over the entire composition range. Using simple cluster expansion model Hamiltonians parametrized on density functional theory data, we compute transport properties explicitly including local interactions between the two atomic species and compare them with the non-interacting diffusion model for disordered, random alloys. Surpri…
We introduce a simplified method to model the interatomic interactions of high entropy alloys based on a lookup table of cluster energies. These interactions are employed in replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations with histogram analysis to obtain thermodynamic properties across a broad temperature range. Kikuchi's Cluster Variation Method entropy formalism and high temperature series expansions are applied to directly calculate entropy from statistics on short- and long-range chemical order, and we discuss the convergence of the entropy as clusters of differing size are included.
We have developed a method to accurately and efficiently determine the vibrational free energy as a function of temperature and volume for substitutional alloys from first principles. Taking Ti$_{1-x}$Al$_x$N alloy as a model system, we calculate the isostructural phase diagram by finding the global minimum of the free energy, corresponding to the true equilibrium state of the system. We demonstrate that the anharmonic contribution and temperature dependence of the mixing enthalpy have a decisive impact on the calculated phase diagram of a Ti$_{1-x}$Al$_x$N alloy, lowering the maximum temperat…
In this present investigation, we discussed the synthesis, microstructure, and hydrogen storage behavior intermetallic Laves phase in a hexanal TiVZrMnCoFe high entropy alloy. In this HEA, three elements are hydride-forming elements and the other three are non-hydride-forming elements (Fe, Mn, Co). The thermodynamic parameter like enthalpy of mixing was calculated using Meidmas model. The possibility of developing high entropy Laves phase-based hydrogen storage materials was advocated.
Lattice Parameter is an important material feature in High Entropy Alloy (HEA) Design. Vegards Law is typically used to estimate lattice parameters but is often inaccurate for metal alloys due to an inability to account for charge transfer which can affect atomic volumes. The present study used ab initio simulation to calculate bond lengths between atoms of dissimilar elements in B2 intermetallic compounds which was then combined with a bond counting model to produce a model to estimate the lattice parameters of Refractory BCC HEAS. The model was tested using a supercell method which modeled v…
Using ab initio calculations and special quasirandom structures, we have characterized the distribution of defect formation energy and migration barrier in Ni-based solid-solution alloys: Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.5}, Ni_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}, Ni_{0.8}Fe_{0.2} and Ni_{0.8}Cr_{0.2}. As defect formation energies depend sensitively on elemental chemical potential, we have developed a computationally efficient method for determining it which takes into account the global composition and local short-range order. We find that Fe has the biggest alloy effects for Ni among these four elements. Our results show that the d…
In this study, we report on face-centered cubic structured CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy thin films with finely dispersed nano-oxide particles which are formed by internal oxidation. Analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging found that the particles are Cr2O3. The oxide particles contribute to the hardening of the film increasing its hardness by 14% compared to that of the film without precipitates, through the Orowan-type strengthening mechanism. Our novel approach paves the way to design medium- and high-entropy alloys with high strength by making use of oxide phases.
High-entropy alloys, near-equiatomic solid solutions of five or more elements, represent a new strategy for the design of materials with properties superior to those of conventional alloys. However, their phase space remains constrained, with transition metal high-entropy alloys exhibiting only face- or body-centered cubic structures. Here, we report the high-pressure synthesis of a hexagonal close-packed phase of the prototypical high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi. This martensitic transformation begins at 14 GPa and is attributed to suppression of the local magnetic moments, destabilizing the ini…
Tracer diffusion of the substitutional components in (CoCrFeNiMn)$_{1-x}$C$_x$ high-entropy alloys with x = 0.002, 0.005 and 0.008 (in at. fractions) is measured at elevated temperatures from 1173 to 1373 K. Two different characteristic effects of interstitial carbon addition on substitutional diffusion in these FCC alloys are distinguished. At the highest temperature of 1373 K, alloying by C with relatively low concentrations (x = 0.002) retards diffusion of the substitutional elements with respect to those in the C-free alloy. At lower temperatures and/or higher C concentrations (x > 0.005),…
The vacancy concentration at finite temperatures is studied for a series of (CoCrFeMn)$_{1-x_\mathrm{Ni}}$Ni$_{x_\mathrm{Ni}}$ alloys by grand-canonical Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations. The vacancy formation energies are calculated from a classical interatomic potential and exhibit a distribution due to the different chemical environments of the vacated sites. In dilute alloys, this distribution features multiple discrete peaks, while concentrated alloys exhibit an unimodal distribution as there are many different chemical environments of similar vacancy formation energy. MC simulations using a n…
Eutectic high entropy alloys (EHEAs) are emerging as an exciting new class of structural alloys as they have shown very promising mechanical properties. However, how to design these alloys has been a challenge. In this work, a simple approach is presented for designing EHEAs. The introduced approach uses the composition of binary and ternary eutectic alloys for finding the composition of EHEAs. The approach is based on the assumption that EHEAs are originated from binary and ternary eutectic alloys. The approach is applied for alloy systems Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni, Co-Cr-Fe-Ni, Co-Cr-Fe-Ni-Ti, and Co-C…
New approaches for the design of alloy systems with multiprincipal elements is recently researched in refractory materials field. However, most research aimed at arc melting process with weakness of coarsening of grains and inhomogeneous microstructure of segregation of elements during the cooling. This study aims to design and fabricate high-entropy alloy with powder metallurgy. In this study, a refractory high entropy alloys with composition near AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr were produced by powder metallurgy. The alloy consists of two body-centered cubic (BCC) phases. One phase was disordered BCC enr…
We study order transitions and defect formation in a model high-entropy alloy (CuNiCoFe) under ion irradiation by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Using a hybrid Monte-Carlo/molecular dynamics scheme a model alloy is generated which is thermodynamically stabilized by configurational entropy at elevated temperatures, but partly decomposes at lower temperatures by copper precipation. Both the high-entropy and the multiphase sample are then subjected to simulated particle irradiation. The damage accumulation is analyzed and compared to an elemental Ni reference system. The results reveal …
High-entropy alloys are an intriguing new class of metallic materials that derive their properties from being multi-element systems that can crystallize as a single phase, despite containing high concentrations of five or more elements with different crystal structures. Here we examine an equiatomic medium-entropy alloy containing only three elements, CrCoNi, as a single-phase face-centered cubic (fcc) solid solution, which displays strength-toughness properties that exceed those of all high-entropy alloys and most multi-phase alloys. At room temperature the alloy shows tensile strengths of al…
High-entropy intermetallic compounds (HEICs) were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering to fill a knowledge gap between the traditional high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and emerging high-entropy ceramics (HECs). Notably, several four- or five-component equimolar aluminides, such as the B2-phase (Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Mn1/5Cu1/5)Al, have been made into single-phase HEICs for the first time. Thermodynamic modeling and a reversible, temperature-dependent, phase-stability experiment suggest that such B2-phase HEICs are entropy-stabilized phases. The structure of these HEICs resembles tha…
In the present work, a simple approach is proposed for predicting the compositions of eutectic high entropy alloys (EHEAs) in Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system. It is proposed that eutectic lines exist between certain eutectic alloys in this system and, as a result, new eutectic or near-eutectic compositions can be obtained by mixing the alloys which are located on the same eutectic line. The approach is applied for a series of experimentally verified eutectic alloys and new eutectic or near-eutectic alloys are designed for Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system. Furthermore, by investigating the compositions of verified …
The Kubo-Greenwood equation, in combination with the first-principles Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Coherent Potential Approximation (KKR-CPA) can be used to calculate the DC residual resistivity of random alloys at T = 0 K. We implemented this method in a multiple scattering theory based ab initio package, MuST, and applied it to the ab initio study of the residual resistivity of the high entropy alloy Al$_x$CoCrFeNi as a function of $x$. The calculated resistivities are compared with experimental data. We also predict the residual resistivity of refractory high entropy alloy MoNbTaV$_x$W. The calcu…
We have grown a single crystal of the equiatomic FeCoCrMnAl high-entropy alloy. The crystal was grown by means of the Bridgman technique and is about 1 cm in diameter and 6.6 cm in length. X-ray Laue images taken at various positions on the surface are sharp and mutually consistent, reflecting its single-crystal nature. We thus report on the first successful growth of a single crystal of a high-entropy alloy with a volume of the order of cubic centimeters. The material has a microstructure consisting of B2 inclusions in a body-centered cubic matrix on the 10 nm length scale.
From electronic-structure-based thermodynamic linear-response, we establish chemical ordering behavior in complex solid solutions versus how Gibbs' space is traversed -- applying it on prototype refractory A2 Ta-Nb-Mo-W high-entropy alloys. Near ideal stoichiometry, this alloy has anomalous, intricate chemical ordering tendencies, with long-ranged chemical interactions that produce competing short-range order (SRO) with a crossover to spinodal segregation. This atypical SRO arises from canonical band behavior that, with alloying, create features near the Fermi-surface (well-defined even with d…
The yield strengths of High Entropy Alloys have recently been correlated with measured picometer-scale atomic distortions. Here, the root mean square microdistortion in a multicomponent alloy is shown to be nearly proportional to the misfit-volume parameter that enters into a predictive model of solute strengthening. Analysis of two model ternary alloy families, face-centered cubic Cr-Fe-Ni and body-centered cubic Nb-Mo-V, demonstrates the correlation over a wide composition space. The reported correlation of yield strength with microdistortion is thus a consequence of the correlation between …
Short-range chemical order (SRO) has been recently demonstrated to play a decisive role in modulating a wide range of physical properties in medium-entropy alloy (MEA) and high-entropy alloy (HEA). The enormous configurational space of these alloys implies multiple forms of SRO are likely to develop concurrently but such structural diversity has not been reported. Here we show, through extensive {\em ab initio}-based sampling study, that SiGeSn medium-entropy alloys spontaneously develop two distinct forms of SRO. Remarkably, the two types of SROs, which carry different energies, distinct degr…
We study the surface elastic response of pure Ni, the random alloy FeNiCr and an average FeNiCr alloy in terms of the surface lattice Green's function. We propose a scheme for computing per-site Green's function and study their per-site variations. The average FeNiCr alloy accurately reproduces the mean Green's function of the full random alloy. Variation around this mean is largest near the edge of the surface Brillouin-zone and decays as $q^{-2}$ with wavevector $q$ towards the $Γ$-point. We also present expressions for the continuum surface Green's function of anisotropic solids of finite a…
In high-entropy alloys (HEAs), the local chemical fluctuations from disordered solute solution state into segregation, precipitation and ordering configurations are complex due to the large number of elements. In this work, the cluster expansion (CE) Hamiltonian for multi-component alloy systems is developed in order to investigate the dependence of chemical ordering of HEAs as a function of temperature dependence due to derivation of configuration entropy from the ideal solute solution. Analytic expressions for Warren-Cowley short-range order (SRO) parameters are derived for a five component …
Multi-principle element alloys have enormous potential, but their exploration suffers from the tremendously large range of configurations. In the last decade such alloys have been designed with a focus on random solid solutions. Here we apply an experimentally verified, combined thermodynamic and first-principles design strategy to reverse the traditional approach and to generate a new type of hcp Al-Hf-Sc-Ti-Zr high entropy alloy with a hitherto unique structure. A phase diagram analysis narrows down the large compositional space to a well-defined set of candidates. First-principles calculati…
For (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Al$_{x}$ high-entropy alloys, we investigate the phase evolution with increasing Al-content (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 20 at.%). From first-principles theory, the Al-doping drives the alloy structurally from FCC to BCC separated by a narrow two-phase region (FCC+BCC), which is well supported by our experiments. We highlight the effect of Al-doping on the formation enthalpy and electronic structure of (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Al$_{x}$ alloys. As chemical short-range order (SRO) in multicomponent alloys indicates the nascent local order (and entropy changes), as well as expected low-tem…
The design of corrosion-resistant high entropy alloys (CR-HEAs) is challenging due to the alloys' virtually astrological composition space. To facilitate this, efficient and reliable high-throughput exploratory approaches are needed. Toward this end, the current work reports a first-principles-based approach exploiting the correlations between work function, surface energy, and corrosion resistance (i.e., work function and surface energy are, by definitions, proportional and inversely proportional to an alloy's inherent corrosion resistance, respectively). Two Bayesian CALPHAD models (or datab…
The integrity of irradiated zirconium based nuclear fuel cladding is related to the precipitation of hydrides which is closely connected with the solubility of hydrogen. A review on the development of measurement technologies is given and the resulting terminal solid solubilities are reflected with respect to the established model of hydrogen solubility in zirconium alloys. The results often allow for a different interpretation than the established model. An alternative qualitative approach is proposed in which the fixed TSSp for the precipitation of zirconium hydrides is replaced by a kinetic…
The fracture properties of as-cast TiVNbTa, a refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA), were investigated using four-point bending tests from -139C to 20C under a strain-rate of 10-3 s-1. From those tests and fractography, the conditional fracture toughness values and the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature were obtained. The brittle-to-ductile transition temperature was between -47C to -27C, which gives an estimated activation energy value of 0.52+-0.09 eV for the alloy. This study provides a preliminary understanding of the nature of dislocation motion in a relatively ductile RHEA.
The electronic stopping power of nickel-based equiatomic solid solutions alloys NiCr, NiFe and NiCo for protons and alpha projectiles is investigated in detail using real-time time-dependent density functional theory over a wide range of velocities. Recently developed numerical electronic structure methods are used to probe fundamental aspects of electron-ion coupling non-perturbatively and in a fully atomistic context, capturing the effect of the atomic scale disorder. The effects of particular electronic band structures and density of states reflect in the low velocity limit behavior. We com…

We present our computational infrastructure and workflow for the inverse design of new alloys powered by these methods. Our preliminary results show that generative models can learn complex relationships in order to generate novelty on demand, making them a valuable tool for materials info…
Enhanced mechanical properties and microstructural stability of ultrafine-grained biodegradable Zn-Li-Mn-Mg-Cu alloys produced by rapid solidification and high-pressure torsion
Stacking Fault Energy (SFE) is an intrinsic alloy property that governs much of the plastic deformation mechanisms observed in fcc alloys. While SFE has been recognized for many years as a key intrinsic mechanical property, its inference via experimental observations or prediction using, for example, computationally intensive first-principles methods is challenging. This difficulty precludes the explicit use of SFE as an alloy design parameter. In this work, we combine DFT calculations (with necessary configurational averaging), machine-learning (ML) and physics-based models to predict the SFE…
Energy efficiency is motivating the search for new high-temperature metals. Some new body-centered-cubic random multicomponent "high entropy alloys (HEAs)" based on refractory elements (Cr-Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W-Hf-Ti-Zr) possess exceptional strengths at high temperatures but the physical origins of this outstanding behavior are not known. Here we show, using integrated neutron-diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and theory, that the high strength and strength retention of a NbTaVTi alloy and a new high-strength/low-density CrMoNbV alloy are attributable to edge d…
The entropy change $ΔS$ between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga ($x = 0 - 0.20$) alloys was studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that $ΔS$ in the Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys increases with the Ni excess $x$. The increase of $ΔS$ is presumably accounted for by an increase of magnetic contribution to the entropy change. It is suggested that the change in modulation of the martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga results in discontinuity of the composition dependence of $ΔS$.
Alloys expand or contract as concentrations change, and the resulting relationship between atomic volume and alloy content is an important property of the solid. While a well-known approximation posits that the atomic volume varies linearly with concentration (Zen`s law), the actual variation is more complicated. Here we use an apparent size of the solute (solvent) atom and the elasticity to derive explicit analytical expressions for the atomic volume of binary solid alloys. Two approximations, continuum and terminal, are proposed. Deviations from Zen`s law are studied for 22 binary alloy syst…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are multicomponent compounds whose high configurational entropy allows them to solidify into a single phase, with a simple crystal lattice structure. Some HEA's exhibit desirable properties, such as high specific strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, while challenging the scientist to make confident predictions in the face of multiple competing phases. We demonstrate phase stability in the multicomponent alloy system of Cr-Mo-Nb-V, for which some of its binary subsystems are subject to phase separation and complex intermetallic-phase formation. Our first-pri…
We present a kinetic model for solid state phase transformation (alpha<-->beta) of common zirconium alloys used as fuel cladding material in light water reactors. The model computes the relative amounts of beta or alpha phase fraction as a function of time or temperature in the alloys. The model accounts for the influence of excess oxygen (due to oxidation) and hydrogen concentration (due to hydrogen pickup) on phase transformation kinetics. Two variants of the model denoted by A and B are presented. Model A is suitable for simulation of laboratory experiments in which the heating/cooling rate…
The atomic-level tunability that results from alloying multiple transition metals with d electrons in concentrated solid solution alloys (CSAs), including high-entropy alloys (HEAs), has produced remarkable properties for advanced energy applications, in particular, damage resistance in high-radiation environments. The key to understanding CSAs radiation performance is quantitatively characterizing their complex local physical and chemical environments. In this study, the local structure of a FeCoNiCrPd HEA is quantitatively analyzed with X-ray total scattering and extended X-ray absorption fi…
