The electronic stopping power of nickel-based equiatomic solid solutions alloys NiCr, NiFe and NiCo for protons and alpha projectiles is investigated in detail using real-time time-dependent density functional theory over a wide range of velocities. Recently developed numerical electronic structure methods are used to probe fundamental aspects of electron-ion coupling non-perturbatively and in a fully atomistic context, capturing the effect of the atomic scale disorder. The effects of particular electronic band structures and density of states reflect in the low velocity limit behavior. We compare our results for the alloys with those of a pure nickel target to understand how alloying affects the electronic stopping. We discover that NiCo and NiFe have similar stopping behavior as Ni while NiCr has an asymptotic stopping power that is more than a factor of two larger than its counterparts for velocities below 0.1 a.u.. We show that the low-velocity limit of electronic stopping power can be manipulated by controlling the broadening of the d-band through the chemical disorder. In this regime, the Bragg's additive rule for the stopping of composite materials also fails for NiCr.
We present recent Monte Carlo results on surfaces of bcc-structured binary alloys which undergo an order-disorder phase transformation in the bulk. In particular, we discuss surface order and surface induced disorder at the bulk transition between the ordered (DO3) phase and the disordered (A2) phase. An intricate interplay between different ordering and segregation phenomena leads to a complex surface behavior, which depends on the orientation of the surface under consideration. abstract
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of disordered Fe$_{x}$Pd$_{100-x}$ alloys $(50 < x < 85)$ are investigated in the framework of density functional theory using the full potential local orbital method (FPLO). Disorder is treated in the coherent potential approximation (CPA). Our calculations explain the experimental magnetization data. The origin of the tetragonal distortion in the Fe-Pd magnetic shape memory alloys is found to be a Jahn-Teller like effect which allows the system to reduce its band energy in a narrow composition range. Prospects for an optimization of the alloys…
Order-disorder phase transition in Ni$_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}$Ga Heusler alloys has been studied. It was found that the $L2_1 \to B2^{\prime}$ phase transition in Ni2+xMn1-xGa (x = 0.16 - 0.20) Heusler alloys is of second order and the temperature of this transition decreases with Ni excess.
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of disordered CoPd and CoPt alloys using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with the tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. Effect of short range ordering present in disordered phase of alloys on electronic and magnetic properties has been discussed. We present results for magnetic moments, Curie temperatures and electronic band energies with varying degrees of short range order for different concentrations of Co and try to understand and compare the magnetic properties and ordering phenomena in these sy…
Crystalline Co$_{x}$Cu$_{1-x}$ alloys show interesting magnetic behavior over the entire concentration regime. We here present a fully self- consistent first principles electronic structure studies of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the system. We present results for the variation of density of states, magnetic moment, spin susceptibility and Curie temperature.
Heusler alloys containing Co and Mn are amongst the most heavily studied half-metallic ferromagnets for future applications in spintronics. Using state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations, we investigate the effect of doping and disorder on their electronic and magnetic properties. Small degrees of doping by substituting Fe or Cr for Mn scarcely affect the half-metallicity. A similar effect is also achieved by mixing the sublattices occupied by the Mn and sp atoms. Thus the half-metallicity is a robust property of these alloys.
The electronic and optical properties of (Zn,Mg)(S,Se) wide-gap solid solutions are studied using ab initio techniques and starting from the previously determined atomistic structure of the alloy. Compositional disorder is shown to close substantially the gap with respect to the predictions of the virtual-crystal approximation. The bowing of the fundamental gap vs. composition predicted by our calculations is in very good agreement with experiments available for the Zn(S,Se) pseudo-binary alloy. At temperatures typical for MBE growth, the quaternary alloy displays a rather large amount of shor…
We present an ab initio theory of transport quantities of metallic ferromagnets developed in the framework of the fully relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The approach is based on the Kubo-Streda formula for the conductivity tensor, on the coherent potential approximation for random alloys, and on the concept of interatomic electron transport. The developed formalism is applied to pure 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) and to random Ni-based ferromagnetic alloys (Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Mn). High values of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), found for Ni-rich alloys, ar…
The standard theoretical understanding of the lattice thermal conductivity, $κ_{\ell}$, of semiconductor alloys assumes that mass disorder is the most important source of phonon scattering. In contrast, we show that the hitherto neglected contribution of force-constant (IFC) disorder is essential to accurately predict the $κ_{\ell}$ of those polar compounds characterized by a complex atomic-scale structure. We have developed an \emph{ab initio} method based on special quasirandom structures and Green's functions, and including the role of IFC disorder, and applied it in order to calculate the …
In order to carefully address the interplay between substitutional disorder and spin-orbit-coupling in IV-VI alloys, we propose a novel theoretical approach that integrates the reliability of plane-wave based density-functional theory beyond the local-density approximation with the Coherent Potential Approximation. By applying the proposed method to ternary chalcogenide alloys, we predict a substantial robustness of spectral features close to the Fermi energy against substitutional disorder. Supplementing our first-principles calculations with the analysis of the $k \cdot p$ model for rock-sal…
Lowest-order quantum perturbation theory (Fermi's golden rule) for phonon-disorder scattering has been used to predict thermal conductivities in several semiconducting alloys with surprising success given its underlying hypothesis of weak and dilute disorder. In this paper, we explain how this is possible by focusing on the case of maximally mass-disordered Mg$_2$Si$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. We use a Chebyshev polynomials Green's function method that allows a full treatment of disorder on very large systems (tens of millions of atoms) to probe individual phonon linewidths and frequency-resolved thermal t…
The authors developed a new analysis technique for atomic disorder structures in full-Heusler alloys using x-ray diffraction (XRD) with Co-Ka and Cu-Ka sources. The developed technique can quantitatively evaluate all the atomic disorders for the exchanges between X, Y, and Z atoms in full-Heusler X2YZ alloys. In particular, the technique can treat the DO3 disorder that cannot be analyzed by ordinary Cu-Ka XRD. By applying this technique to full-Heusler Co2FeSi alloy thin films formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA), RTA-temperature (TA) dependence of the atomic disorders was revealed. The sit…
Recent first-principles calculations have predicted Mn$_{2}$Ni{\it X} ({\it X}=Al, Ga, In, Sn) alloys to be magnetic shape memory alloys. Moreover, experiments on Mn$_{2}$NiGa and Mn$_{2}$NiSn suggest that the alloys deviate from the perfect inverse Heusler arrangement and that there is chemical disorder at the sublattices with tetrahedral symmetry. In this work, we investigate the effects of such chemical disorder on phase stabilities and magnetic properties using first-principles electronic structure methods. We find that except Mn$_{2}$NiAl, all other alloys show signatures of martensitic t…
A new disordered atom configuration in Fe2CrGa alloy has been created by ball-milling method. This leads to a significant enhancement of the magnetic moment up to 3.2~3.9 μB and an increase of Curie temperature by about 200 K, compared with the arc-melt samples. Combination of first-principles calculations and experimental results reveals that Fe2CrGa alloy should crystallize in Hg2CuTi based structure with different atomic disorders for the samples prepared by different methods. It is addressed that magnetic interactions play a crucial role for the system to adopt such an atomic configuration…
We present a first principles study based on density functional theory of thermodynamic and electronic properties of the most important intrinsic defects in the semiconductor alloy Cd(1-x)Zn(x)Te with x<0.13. The alloy is represented by a set of supercells with disorder on the Cd/Zn sublattice. Defect formation energies as well as electronic and optical transition levels are analyzed as a function of composition. We show that defect formation energies increase with Zn content with the exception of the neutral Te vacancy. This behavior is qualitatively similar to but quantitatively rather diffe…
Many mixed ionic/electronic conductors (MIECs) applied in fuel cell electrodes can be considered as alloys between perovskite oxides and ordered oxygen vacancy compounds. For example, in the model MIEC (STF), low oxygen diffusion barrier exist in SrTiO3 lattice, when it has been mixed with SrFeO2.5 with intrinsic oxygen deficiency, the ionic conductivity can be greatly improved. Meanwhile, the electronic conductivity can be optimized by controlling the defect chemistry of the alloy. However, the configurational space is too large in such alloys so that it is difficult for direct atomic modelin…
We present systematic theoretical investigations to explore the microscopic mechanisms leading to the formation of antiferromagnetism in Ru2MnZ (Z= Sn,Sb,Ge,Si) full Heusler alloys. Our study is based on first-principles calculations of inter-atomic Mn-Mn exchange interactions to set up a suitable Heisenberg spin-model and on subsequent Monte-Carlo simulations of the magnetic properties at finite temperature. The exchange interactions are derived from the paramagnetic state, while a realistic account of long-range chemical disorder is made in the framework of the Coherent Potential Approximati…
We expand our study on the full-Heusler compounds [I. Galanakis \textit{et al.}, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{89}, 042502 (2006)] to cover also the case of doping and disorder in the case of Co$_2$MnAl and Co$_2$MnGa half-metallic Heusler alloys. These alloys present a region of very small minority density of states instead of a real gap. Electronic structure calculations reveal that doping with Fe and Cr in the case of Co$_2$MnAl retains the half-metallicity contrary to the Co$_2$MnGa compound. Cr impurities present an unusual behavior and the spin moment of the Cr impurity scales almost linearl…
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
The effect of alloy disorder on the optical density of states and the average room temperature carrier statistics in GaInNAs quantum wells is discussed. A red shift between the peak of the room temperature photoluminescence and the surface photovoltage spectra, that systematically increases with the nitrogen content within the quantum wells is observed. The relationship between this Stokes' shift and the absorption linewidth in different samples suggests that the photoexcited carriers undergo a continuous transition, from being in quasi-thermal equilibrium with the lattice to being completely …
We have carried out \textit{ab-initio} calculations of local structure of Mn and Ni in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1.5}$In$_{0.5}$ alloy with different site occupancies in order to understand the similarities in martensitic and magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ and Ni$_2$Mn$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ alloys. Our results show that in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ alloys there is a strong possibility of Mn atoms occupying all the three, X, Y and Z sites of X$_2$YZ Heusler structure while Ni atoms preferentially occupy the X sites. Such a site occupancy disorder of Mn atoms is in addition to a local str…
In alloys exhibiting substitutional disorder, the variety of atomic environments manifests itself as a `disorder broadening' in their core level binding energy spectra. Disorder broadening can be measured experimentally, and in principle can be used to deduce information about specific atomic environments within a sample. However, progress in this endeavor is hampered by the lack of a model for this phenomenon which can treat complex systems. In this work we describe such a model. The model is used to elucidate the relationship between charge transfer, atomic environment, and disorder broadeni…
We present the itinerant coherent-potential approximation(ICPA), an analytic, translationally invariant and tractable form of augmented-space-based, multiple-scattering theory in a single-site approximation for harmonic phonons in realistic random binary alloys with mass and force-constant disorder. We provide expressions for quantities needed for comparison with experimental structure factors such as partial and average spectral functions and derive the sum rules associated with them. Numerical results are presented for Ni_{55} Pd_{45} and Ni_{50} Pt_{50} alloys which serve as test cases, the…
The electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of ordered and chemically disordered FeRh alloy is studied using ab-initio methods. The equiatomic Fe$_{50}$Rh$_{50}$ composition is reported for both ordered and disordered phases. Chemically disordered Fe$_x$Rh$_{100-x}$ is reported and the effect of disorder on electronic and magnetic properties is discussed. Further, We have reported the effects of stress and strain in both the order and disorder phases. The result is only for the cubic phase and no distortion has been taken into consideration. This study is motivated by the recent res…
Spintronics is the fast growing field that will play a key role in optimizing power consumption, memory, and processing capabilities of nanoelectronic devices. Heusler alloys are potential candidates for application in spintronics due to their room temperature (RT) half-metallicity, high Curie temperature, low lattice mismatch with most substrates, and strong control on electronic density of states at Fermi level. In this work, we investigate the effect of {substitutional doping and disorder} on the half-metallicity, phase stability, and magnetism of Heusler alloys using density functional the…
We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of two quaternary Heusler alloys CoFeCrGe (CFCG) and CoMnCrAl (CMCA), promising candidates for spintronics applications. Magnetization measurement shows the saturation magnetization and transition temperature to be $3\; μ_B$, $866$ K and $0.9 \; μ_B$, $358$ K for CFCG and CMCA respectively. The magnetization values agree fairly well with our theoretical results and also obey the Slater-Pauling rule, a prerequisite for half metallicity. A striking difference between the two systems is their structure; CFCG crystallizes in fully ordered Y-…
Based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we analyze the chemical and magnetic mechanisms stabilizing the cubic phase in Fe$_2$-based Heusler materials, which were previously predicted to be tetragonal when being chemically ordered. In agreement with recent experimental data, we found that these compounds crystallize within the so-called "inverted" cubic Heusler structure perturbed by a certain portion of the intrinsic chemical disorder. Understanding these mechanisms is a necessary step to guide towards the successful future synthesis of the stable Fe$_2$-based tetragonal p…
Alloy disorder in II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is typically reduced when the local magnetic spins align in an applied magnetic field. An important and untested expectation of current models of alloy disorder, however, is that alloy fluctuations in many DMS compounds should increase again in very large magnetic fields of order 100 tesla. Here we measure the disorder potential in a Zn$_{.70}$Cd$_{.22}$Mn$_{.08}$Se quantum well via the low temperature photoluminescence linewidth, using a new magnet system to 89 T. Above 70 T, the linewidth is observed to increase again, in accord w…
Diffusion of atoms in solids is one of the most fundamental kinetic processes that ultimately governs many materials properties. Here, we report on a combined first-principles and kinetic Monte Carlo study of macroscopic diffusion properties of disordered Ti-Ta alloys over the entire composition range. Using simple cluster expansion model Hamiltonians parametrized on density functional theory data, we compute transport properties explicitly including local interactions between the two atomic species and compare them with the non-interacting diffusion model for disordered, random alloys. Surpri…

Whilst it has long been known that disorder profoundly affects transport properties, recent measurements on a series of solid solution 3d-transition metal alloys reveal two orders of magnitude variations in the residual resistivity. Using ab-initio methods, we demonstrate that, while the carrier density of all alloys is as high as in normal metals, the electron mean-free-path can vary from ~10 Å (strong scattering limit) to ~10$^3$ Å (weak scattering limit). Here, we delineate the underlying electron scattering mechanisms responsible for this disparate behavior. While spin dependent site-diago…
Half-metallic ferromagnets and especially the full-Heusler alloys containing Co are at the center of scientific research due to their potential applications in spintronics. For realistic devices it is important to control accurately the creation of defects in these alloys. We review some of our late results on the role of defects and impurities in these compounds. More precisely we present results for the following cases (i) doping and disorder in Co$_2$Cr(Mn)Al(Si) alloys, (ii) half-metallic ferrimagnetism appeared due to the creation of Cr(Mn) antisites in these alloys, (iii) Co-doping in Mn…
We show by first-principles calculations that the skew-scattering anomalous Hall and spin-Hall angles of L$1_0$-ordered FePt drastically depend on different types of disorder. A different sign of the AHE is obtained when slightly deviating from the stoichiometric ratio towards the Fe-rich side as compared to the Pt-rich side. For stoichiometric samples, short-range ordering of defects has a profound effect on the Hall angles and can change them by a factor of $2$ as compared to the case of uncorrelated disorder. This might explain the vast range of anomalous Hall angles measured in experiments…
We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloy systems in ordered and disordered phases. The influence of various exchange-correlation functionals on values of equilibrium lattice parameters and magnetic moments in ordered Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloys have been studied using linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The electronic structure calculations for the disordered alloys have been carried out using augmented space recursion technique in the framework of tight binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The effect of short range order has also been…
In this communication we present a detailed study of the effect of chemical disorder on the optical response of Ni$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$ (0.1$\leq$ x $\leq$0.75) and Ni$_{3(1-x)/3}$Pt$_x$ (0.1$\leq$ x $\leq$0.3). We shall propose a formalism which will combine a Kubo-Greenwood approach with a DFT based tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbitals (TB-LMTO) basis and augmented space recursion (ASR) technique to explicitly incorporate the effect of disorder. We show that chemical disorder has a large impact on optical response of Ni-Pt systems. In ordered Ni-Pt alloys, the optical conductivity peaks are sha…
A coherent description of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is presented that is applicable to pure as well as disordered alloy systems by treating all sources of the AHE on equal footing. This is achieved by an implementation of the Kubo-Středa equation using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method in combination with the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Applications to the pure elemental ferromagnets bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni led to results in full accordance with previous work. For the alloy systems fcc-Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and fcc-Ni$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ …
The lattice dynamics in substitutional disordered alloys with constituents having large size differences is driven by strong disorder in masses, inter-atomic force constants and local environments. In this letter, a new first-principles approach based on special quasi random structures and itinerant coherent potential approximation to compute the phonon spectra of such alloys is proposed and applied to Ni$_{0.5}$Pt$_{0.5}$ alloy. The agreement between our results with the experiments is found to be much better than for previous models of disorder due to an accurate treatment of the interplay o…
Understanding the role of disorder and the correlations that exist within it, is one of the defining challenges in contemporary materials science. However, there are few material systems, devoid of other complex interactions, which can be used to systematically study the effects of crystallographic conflict on correlated disorder. Here, we report extensive diffuse x-ray scattering studies on the epitaxially stabilised alloy $\mbox{U}_{1-x}\mbox{Mo}_x$, showing that a new form of intrinsically tuneable correlated disorder arises from a mismatch between the preferred symmetry of a crystallograph…
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of bcc Co$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$, Cr$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ and Mn$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ in their ferromagnetic phases using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. We make a systematic study of magnetic properties like magnetic moment and Curie temperature and try to draw some conclusions on their variation across the row of 3-{\it d} transition metal series in periodic table using arguments based on effects like charge transfer, exchange splitting and hybridization.
Many of the purported virtues of Multi-Principal Element Alloys (MPEAs), such as corrosion, high-temperature oxidation and irradiation resistance, are highly sensitive to vacancy diffusivity. Similarly, solute interdiffusion is governed by vacancy diffusion -- it is often unclear whether MPEAs are truly stable, or effectively stabilized by slow interdiffusion. The considerable composition space afforded to these alloys makes optimizing for desired properties a daunting task; theoretical and computational tools are necessary to guide alloy development. For diffusion, such tools depend on both a…
In this work, polycrystalline NiCrGa half Heusler alloy, which is predicted to be half-metallic ferromagnet from first principles calculations, has been synthesized by arc meting technique and its structural, magnetic as well as the electronic properties have been studied. The measured x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows the signature of a disordered structure. From the magnetization measurements, there is no evidence of ferromagnetic ordering observed in this system down to the lowest temperature studied. Instead, the system shows the signature of an antiferromagnetic ordering at very low t…
We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of the L1_{0}-like Fe_{x}Pt_{1-x} samples studied experimentally by Barmak and co-workers in [J. Appl. Phys. 98 (2005) 033904]. The variation of composition and long-range chemical order in the samples was studied in terms of the coherent potential approximation. In accordance with experimental observations, we find that, in the presence of long-range chemical disorder, Fe-rich samples exhibit a larger MAE than stoichiometric FePt. By considering the site- and species-resolved contributions to the MAE, w…
We apply a new Kubo-Greenwood type formula combined with a generalized Feynman diagram- matic technique to report a first principles calculation of the thermal transport properties of disordered Fe_{1-x}Cr_{x} alloys. The diagrammatic approach simplifies the inclusion of disorder-induced scattering effects on the two particle correlation functions and hence renormalizes the heat current operator to calculate configuration averaged lattice thermal conductivity and diffusivity. The thermal conductivity K(T) in the present case shows an approximate quadratic T-dependence in the low temperature re…

We present first principles charge- and spin-selfconsistent electronic structure computations on the Heusler-type disordered alloys Fe$_{3-x}$V$_{x}$X for three different metalloids X=(Si, Ga and Al). In these calculations we use the methodology based on the Korringa-Kohn- Rostoker formalism and the coherent-potential approximation (KKR-CPA), generalized to treat disorder in multi-component complex alloys.
Ultra-wide-band-gap group-III nitrides are of interest for applications in deep-ultraviolet optoelectronics and power electronics. Such devices must be able to efficiently dissipate heat generated from their operation, making the thermal conductivity of the constituent materials an important parameter for high-power applications. We have investigated the phonon-limited thermal conductivity of AlN, GaN, and Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N using first-principles calculations, with a focus on the effects of compositional and isotopic disorder. Our Boltzmann-transport-equation calculations show that the maximum…
We use high-throughput first-principles sampling to investigate competitive factors that determine the crystal structure of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and the energetics dependence of the stable phase on the atomic configuration of fully ordered L1$_2$, D0$_{22}$, and random solid solution (RSS) phases of equiatomic quaternary alloys comprising four of the six constituent elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu). Considering the configurational entropy, we demonstrate that valence electron concentration (VEC) and temperature are crucial to determine the phase stability of HEAs at finite temperatu…

The bcc-based Fe_{1-x}Al_{x} exhibit interesting magnetic and anomalous structural properties as a function of composition and sample processing conditions arising from thermal or off-stoichiometric chemical disorder, and, although well studied, these properties are not understood. In stoichiometric B2 FeAl, including the effects of partial long-range order (i.e., thermal antisites), we find the observed paramagnetic response (with non-zero local moments), in contrast to past investigations which find ferromagnetism based on local density approximation (LDA) to density functional theory or whi…
