We continue our investigation of the parameter space of families of polynomial skew products. Assuming that the base polynomial has a Julia set not totally disconnected and is neither a Chebyshev nor a power map, we prove that, near any bifurcation parameter, one can find parameters where $k$ critical points bifurcate \emph{independently}, with $k$ up to the dimension of the parameter space. This is a striking difference with respect to the one-dimensional case. The proof is based on a variant of the inclination lemma, applied to the postcritical set at a Misiurewicz parameter. By means of an analytical criterion for the non-vanishing of the self-intersections of the bifurcation current, we deduce the equality of the supports of the bifurcation current and the bifurcation measure for such families. Combined with results by Dujardin and Taflin, this also implies that the support of the bifurcation measure in these families has non-empty interior. As part of our proof we construct, in these families, subfamilies of codimension 1 where the bifurcation locus has non empty interior. This provides a new independent proof of the existence of holomorphic families of arbitrarily large dimension whose bifurcation locus has non empty interior. Finally, it shows that the Hausdorff dimension of the support of the bifurcation measure is maximal at any point of its support.
We initiate a parametric study of holomorphic families of polynomial skew products, i.e., polynomial endomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$ of the form $F(z,w)= (p(z), q(z,w))$ that extend to holomorphic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{C})$. We prove that dynamical stability in the sense of arXiv:1403.7603 preserves hyperbolicity within such families, and give a complete classification of the hyperbolic components that are the analogue, in this setting, of the complement of the Mandelbrot set for the family $z^2 +c$. We also precisely describe the geometry of the bifurcation locus and current …
We study holomorphic families of polynomial-like maps depending on a parameter s. We prove that the partial sums of largest Lyapunov exponents are plurisubharmonic functions of s. We also study their continuity and introduce the bifurcation locus as the support of bifurcation currents.
In this paper we study the anti-integrable limit scenario of skew-product systems. We consider a generalization of such systems based on the Frenkel-Kontorova model, and prove the existence of orbits with any fibered rotation number in systems of both one and two degrees of freedom. In particular, our results also apply to two dimensional maps with degenerate potentials (vanishing second derivative), so extending the results of existence of Cantori for more general twist maps. We also prove that under certain mild regularity conditions on the potential the structure of the orbits is of Cantor …
In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the set Per\_n(w) of classes [f] for which f admits a cycle of exact period n and multiplier w is known to be an algebraic hypersurface. We prove that, given a complex number w, these hypersurfaces equidistribute towards the bifurcation current as n tends to infinity.
We study the bifurcation loci of quadratic (and unicritical) polynomials and exponential maps. We outline a proof that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected; this is an analog to Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that (the boundary of) the Mandelbrot set is connected. For these parameter spaces, a fundamental conjecture is that hyperbolic dynamics is dense. For quadratic polynomials, this would follow from the famous stronger conjecture that the bifurcation locus (or equivalently the Mandelbrot set) is locally connected. It turns out that a formally slightly weaker statement is …
We show a partial generalization of Sullivan's non-wandering domain theorem in complex dimension two. More precisely, we show the non-existence of wandering Fatou components for polynomial skew products of $ \mathbb{C}^2$ with an invariant attracting fiber, under the assumption that the multiplier $ λ$ is small. We actually show a stronger result, namely that every forward orbit of any vertical Fatou disk intersects a bulging Fatou component.
We study stability and bifurcations in holomorphic families of polynomial automorphisms of C^2. We say that such a family is weakly stable over some parameter domain if periodic orbits do not bifurcate there. We first show that this defines a meaningful notion of stability, which parallels in many ways the classical notion of J-stability in one-dimensional dynamics. In the second part of the paper, we prove that under an assumption of moderate dissipativity, the parameters displaying homoclinic tangencies are dense in the bifurcation locus. This confirms one of Palis' Conjectures in the comple…
Inspired by an example of Grebogi et al [1], we study a class of model systems which exhibit the full two-step scenario for the nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation, as proposed by Arnold [2]. The specific structure of these models allows a rigorous and thorough analysis of the bifurcation pattern. In particular, we show the existence of an invariant 'generalised torus' splitting off a previously stable central manifold after the second bifurcation point. The scenario is described in two different settings. First, we consider deterministically forced models, which can be treated as continuous skew p…
We construct new examples of cubic polynomials with a parabolic fixed point that cannot be approximated by Misiurewicz polynomials. In particular, such parameters admit maximal bifurcations, but do not belong to the support of the bifurcation measure.
We consider skew-products with concave interval fiber maps over a certain subshift obtained as the projection of orbits staying in a given region. It generates a new type of (essentially) coded shift. The fiber maps have expanding and contracting regions which dynamically interact. The dynamics also exhibits pairs of horseshoes of different type of hyperbolicity which, in some cases, are cyclically related. The space of ergodic measures on the base is an entropy-dense Poulsen simplex. Those measures lift canonically to ergodic measures for the skew-product. We explain when and how the spaces o…
Little is known about the existence of wandering Fatou components for rational maps in two complex variables. In 2003 Lilov proved the non-existence of wandering Fatou components for polynomial skew-products in the neighborhood of an invariant super-attracting fiber. In fact Lilov proved a stronger result, namely that the forward orbit of any vertical disk must intersect a fattened Fatou component of the invariant fiber. Naturally the next class of maps to study are polynomial skew-products with an invariant attracting (but not super-attracting) fiber. Here we show that Lilov's stronger result…
We consider the symmetries of Julia sets of polynomial skew products on C^2, which are birationally conjugate to rotational products. Our main results give the classification of the polynomial skew products whose Julia sets have infinitely many symmetries.
For the space of single-variable monic and centered complex polynomial vector fields of arbitrary degree d, it is proved that any bifurcation which preserves the multiplicity of equilibrium points can be realized as a composition of a finite number of simpler bifurcations, and these bifurcations are characterized.
We consider skew-products of quadratic maps over certain Misiurewicz-Thurston maps and study their statistical properties. We prove that, when the coupling function is a polynomial of odd degree, such a system admits two positive Lyapunov exponents almost everywhere and a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
We study the dynamics of polynomial skew products on C^2. By using suitable weights, we prove the existence of several types of Green functions. Largely, continuity and plurisubharmonicity follow. Moreover, it relates to the dynamics of the rational extensions to weighted projective spaces.
In this paper we give the bifurcation diagram of the family of cubic vector fields $\dot z=z^3+ ε_1z+ε_0$ for $z\in \mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$, depending on the values of $ε_1,ε_0\in\mathbb{C}$. The bifurcation diagram is in $\mathbb{R}^4$, but its conic structure allows describing it for parameter values in $\mathbb{S}^3$. There are two open simply connected regions of structurally stable vector fields separated by surfaces corresponding to bifurcations of homoclinic connections between two separatrices of the pole at infinity. These branch from the codimension 2 curve of double singular points.…
Investigating the link between postcritical behaviors and the relations of saddle basic sets for Axiom A polynomial skew products on C^2, we characterize various properties concerning the three kinds of accumulation sets defined by DeMarco and Hruska in terms of the saddle basic sets. We also give a new example of higher degree.
In this paper, we perturb the global center of the planar polynomial vector fields $\mathcal{X}(x,y)=(-y(x^2+a^2),x(x^2+a^2))$ ($a\neq0$) inside cubic piecewise smooth polynomials with switching line $y=0$. By using average function of first order, we prove that the sharper bound of the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the period annulus is 6.
We consider polynomial maps of the form f(z,w) = (p(z),q(z,w)) that extend as holomorphic maps of CP^2. Mattias Jonsson introduces in (Math. Ann., 1999) a notion of connectedness for such polynomial skew products that is analogous to connectivity for the Julia set of a polynomial map in one-variable. We prove the following dichotomy: if f is an Axiom-A polynomial skew product, and f is connected, then every Fatou component of f is homeomorphic to an open ball; otherwise, some Fatou component of f has infinitely generated first homology.
The multicorns are the connectedness loci of unicritical antiholomorphic polynomials $\bar{z}^d + c$. We investigate the structure of boundaries of hyperbolic components: we prove that the structure of bifurcations from hyperbolic components of even period is as one would expect for maps that depend holomorphically on a complex parameter (for instance, as for the Mandelbrot set; in this setting, this is a non-obvious fact), while the bifurcation structure at hyperbolic components of odd period is very different. In particular, the boundaries of odd period hyperbolic components consist only of …
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
The repetition property of a sequence in a metric space, a notion introduced by us in an earlier paper, is of importance in the spectral analysis of ergodic Schrödinger operators. It may be used to exclude eigenvalues for such operators. In this paper we study the question of when a sequence on a torus that is generated by a polynomial or a skew-shift has the repetition property. This provides classes of ergodic Schrödinger operators with potentials generated by skew-shifts on tori that have, contrary to earlier belief, no eigenvalues.
We consider the bifurcation structure of one-parameter families of unimodal maps whose differentiability is only $C^1$. The structure of its bifurcation diagram can be a very wild one in such case. However we prove that in a certain topological sense, the structure is the same as that of the standard family of quadratic polynomials. In the case of families of polynomials, irreducible component of the bifurcation diagram can be defined naturally by dividing by the polynomials corresponding to lower periods. We show that such a irreducible component can be defined even if the maps and the family…
