Boolean functions have very nice applications in cryptography and coding theory, which have led to a lot of research focusing on their applications. The objective of this paper is to construct binary linear codes with few weights from the defining set, which is defined by some special Boolean functions and some additional restrictions. First, we provide two general constructions of binary linear codes with three or four weights from Boolean functions with at most three Walsh transform values and determine the parameters of their dual codes. Then many classes of binary linear codes with explicit weight enumerators are obtained. Some binary linear codes and their duals obtained are optimal or almost optimal. The binary linear codes obtained in this paper may have a special interest in secret sharing schemes, association schemes, strongly regular graphs.
Boolean functions have important applications in cryptography and coding theory. Two famous classes of binary codes derived from Boolean functions are the Reed-Muller codes and Kerdock codes. In the past two decades, a lot of progress on the study of applications of Boolean functions in coding theory has been made. Two generic constructions of binary linear codes with Boolean functions have been well investigated in the literature. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first is to provide a survey on recent results, and the other is to propose open problems on one of the two generic cons…
It is proved an amplification of Cusick-Cheon's conjecture on balanced Boolean functions in the cosets of the binary Reed-Muller code RM(k,m) of order k and length 2^m, in the cases where k = 1 or k >= (m-1)/2.
Binary linear codes with good parameters have important applications in secret sharing schemes, authentication codes, association schemes, and consumer electronics and communications. In this paper, we construct several classes of binary linear codes from vectorial Boolean functions and determine their parameters, by further studying a generic construction developed by Ding \emph{et al.} recently. First, by employing perfect nonlinear functions and almost bent functions, we obtain several classes of six-weight linear codes which contains the all-one codeword. Second, we investigate a subcode o…
We prove the Courtade-Kumar conjecture, which states that the mutual information between any Boolean function of an $n$-dimensional vector of independent and identically distributed inputs to a memoryless binary symmetric channel and the corresponding vector of outputs is upper-bounded by $1-\operatorname{H}(p)$, where $\operatorname{H}(p)$ represents the binary entropy function. That is, let $\mathbf{X}=[X_1...X_n]$ be a vector of independent and identically distributed Bernoulli($1/2$) random variables, which are the input to a memoryless binary symmetric channel, with the error probability …
Recently, much progress has been made to construct minimal linear codes due to their preference in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. In this paper, we put forward a new method to construct minimal linear codes by using vectorial Boolean functions. Firstly, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a generic class of linear codes from vectorial Boolean functions to be minimal. Based on that, we derive some new three-weight minimal linear codes and determine their weight distributions. Secondly, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for another generic clas…
Suppose $\XX{N}$ is a uniformly distributed $N$-dimensional binary vector and $\YY{N}$ is obtained by passing $\XX{N}$ through a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability $α$. Recently, Courtade and Kumar postulates that $I(f(\XX{N});\YY{N})\leq 1-\Be(α)$ for any Boolean function $f$ \cite{courtade}. In this paper, we provide a proof of the correctness of this conjecture.
The sequence pairs of length $2^{m}$ projected from complementary array pairs of Type-II of size $\mathbf{2}^{(m)}$ and mixed Type-II/III and of size $\mathbf{2}^{(m-1)}\times2$ are complementary sequence pairs Type-II and Type-III respectively. An exhaustive search for binary Type-II and Type-III complementary sequence pairs of small lengths $2^{m}$ ($m=1,2,3,4$) shows that they are all projected from the aforementioned complementary array pairs, whose algebraic normal forms satisfy specified expressions. It's natural to ask whether the conclusion holds for all $m$. In this paper, we proved t…
We construct trace codes over $\Z_4$ by using Boolean functions and skew sets, respectively. Their Lee weight distribution is studied by using a Galois ring version of the Walsh-Hadamard transform and exponential sums. We obtain a new family of optimal two-weight codes over $\Z_4.$
Suppose $X$ is a uniformly distributed $n$-dimensional binary vector and $Y$ is obtained by passing $X$ through a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability $α$. A recent conjecture by Courtade and Kumar postulates that $I(f(X);Y)\leq 1-h(α)$ for any Boolean function $f$. So far, the best known upper bound was $I(f(X);Y)\leq (1-2α)^2$. In this paper, we derive a new upper bound that holds for all balanced functions, and improves upon the best known bound for all $\tfrac{1}{3}<α<\tfrac{1}{2}$.
We prove the Courtade-Kumar conjecture, for several classes of n-dimensional Boolean functions, for all $n \geq 2$ and for all values of the error probability of the binary symmetric channel, $0 \leq p \leq 1/2$. This conjecture states that the mutual information between any Boolean function of an n-dimensional vector of independent and identically distributed inputs to a memoryless binary symmetric channel and the corresponding vector of outputs is upper-bounded by $1-\operatorname{H}(p)$, where $\operatorname{H}(p)$ represents the binary entropy function. That is, let $\mathbf{X}=[X_1 \ldots…
A binary string of length $2^k$ induces the Boolean function of $k$ variables whose Shannon expansion is the given binary string. This Boolean function then is representable via a unique reduced ordered binary decision diagram (ROBDD). The given binary string is fully recoverable from this ROBDD. We exhibit a lossless data compression algorithm in which a binary string of length a power of two is compressed via compression of the ROBDD associated to it as described above. We show that when binary strings of length $n$ a power of two are compressed via this algorithm, the maximal pointwise redu…
We prove the Courtade-Kumar conjecture, for certain classes of $n$-dimensional Boolean functions, $\forall n\geq 2$ and for all values of the error probability of the binary symmetric channel, $\forall 0 \leq p \leq \frac{1}{2}$. Let $\mathbf{X}=[X_1...X_n]$ be a vector of independent and identically distributed Bernoulli$(\frac{1}{2})$ random variables, which are the input to a memoryless binary symmetric channel, with the error probability in the interval $0 \leq p \leq \frac{1}{2}$, and $\mathbf{Y}=[Y_1...Y_n]$ the corresponding output. Let $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ be an $n$-dimens…
Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing binary minimal codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high …
In this paper, we present a construction of linear codes over $\f_{2^t}$ from Boolean functions, which is a generalization of Ding's method \cite[Theorem 9]{Ding15}. Based on this construction, we give two classes of linear codes $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ and $\C_f$ (see Theorem \ref{thm-maincode1} and Theorem \ref{thm-maincodenew}) over $\f_{2^t}$ from a Boolean function $f:\f_{q}\rightarrow \f_2$, where $q=2^n$ and $\f_{2^t}$ is some subfield of $\f_{q}$. The complete weight enumerator of $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ can be easily determined from the Walsh spectrum of $f$, while the weight distribution of the co…
Suppose that $Y^n$ is obtained by observing a uniform Bernoulli random vector $X^n$ through a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability $α$. The "most informative Boolean function" conjecture postulates that the maximal mutual information between $Y^n$ and any Boolean function $\mathrm{b}(X^n)$ is attained by a dictator function. In this paper, we consider the "complementary" case in which the Boolean function is replaced by $f:\left\{0,1\right\}^n\to\left\{0,1\right\}^{n-1}$, namely, an $n-1$ bit quantizer, and show that $I(f(X^n);Y^n)\leq (n-1)\cdot\left(1-h(α)\right)$ for any such…
We present a general algorithm for generating arbitrary standard complementary pairs of sequences (including binary, polyphase, M-PSK and QAM) of length 2^N using Boolean functions. The algorithm follows our earlier paraunitary algorithm, but does not require matrix multiplications. The algorithm can be easily and efficiently implemented in hardware. As a special case, it reduces to the non-recursive (direct) algorithm for generating binary sequences given by Golay, to the algorithm for generating M-PSK sequences given by Davis and Jedwab (and later improved by Paterson) and to all published a…
Boolean functions can be used to construct binary linear codes in many ways, and vice versa. The objective of this short article is to point out a connection between the weight distributions of all projective binary linear codes and the Walsh spectra of all Boolean functions. New research problems are also proposed.
An algorithm for computing the nonlinearity of a Boolean function from its algebraic normal form (ANF) is proposed. By generalizing the expression of the weight of a Boolean function in terms of its ANF coefficients, a formulation of the distances to linear functions is obtained. The special structure of these distances can be exploited to reduce the task of nonlinearity computation to solving an associated binary integer programming problem. The proposed algorithm can be used in cases where applying the Fast Walsh transform is infeasible, typically when the number of input variables exceeds 4…
The absolute indicator is one of the measures used to determine the resistance offered by a Boolean function when used in the design of a symmetric cryptosystem. It was proposed along with the sum of square indicator to evaluate the quality of the diffusion property of block ciphers and hash functions. While the behaviour of the sum of square of random Boolean functions was already known, what remained was the study of the comportment of the absolute indicator of random Boolean functions. As an application, we show that the absolute indicator can distinguish a nonrandom binary sequence from a …
Let $X^n$ be a uniformly distributed $n$-dimensional binary vector, and $Y^n$ be the result of passing $X^n$ through a binary symmetric channel (BSC) with crossover probability $α$. A recent conjecture postulated by Courtade and Kumar states that for any Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$, $I(f(X^n);Y^n)\le 1-H(α)$. Although the conjecture has been proved to be true in the dimension-free high noise regime by Samorodnitsky, here we present a calculus-based approach to show a dimension-dependent result by examining the second derivative of $H(α)-H(f(X^n)|Y^n)$ at $α=1/2$. Along the way, we…
In this paper we define a new transform on (generalized) Boolean functions, which generalizes the Walsh-Hadamard, nega-Hadamard, $2^k$-Hadamard, consta-Hadamard and all $HN$-transforms. We describe the behavior of what we call the root- Hadamard transform for a generalized Boolean function $f$ in terms of the binary components of $f$. Further, we define a notion of complementarity (in the spirit of the Golay sequences) with respect to this transform and furthermore, we describe the complementarity of a generalized Boolean set with respect to the binary components of the elements of that set.
Nowadays, the resistance against algebraic attacks and fast algebraic attacks are considered as an important cryptographic property for Boolean functions used in stream ciphers. Both attacks are very powerful analysis concepts and can be applied to symmetric cryptographic algorithms used in stream ciphers. The notion of algebraic immunity has received wide attention since it is a powerful tool to measure the resistance of a Boolean function to standard algebraic attacks. Nevertheless, an algebraic tool to handle the resistance to fast algebraic attacks is not clearly identified in the literatu…
We introduce a simply stated conjecture regarding the maximum mutual information a Boolean function can reveal about noisy inputs. Specifically, let $X^n$ be i.i.d. Bernoulli(1/2), and let $Y^n$ be the result of passing $X^n$ through a memoryless binary symmetric channel with crossover probability $α$. For any Boolean function $b:\{0,1\}^n\rightarrow \{0,1\}$, we conjecture that $I(b(X^n);Y^n)\leq 1-H(α)$. While the conjecture remains open, we provide substantial evidence supporting its validity.
Nonlinearity of rotation symmetric Boolean functions is an important topic on cryptography algorithm. Let $e\ge 1$ be any given integer. In this paper, we investigate the following question: Is the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ equal to its weight? We introduce some new simple sub-functions and develop new technique to get several recursive formulas. Then we use these recursive formulas to show that the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ i…
We compute the nonlinearity of Boolean functions with Groebner basis techniques, providing two algorithms: one over the binary field and the other over the rationals. We also estimate their complexity. Then we show how to improve our rational algorithm, arriving at a worst-case complexity of $O(n2^n)$ operations over the integers, that is, sums and doublings. This way, with a different approach, we reach the same complexity of established algorithms, such as those based on the fast Walsh transform.
In this paper we obtain the average sensitivity of the laced Boolean functions. This confirms a conjecture of Shparlinski. We also compute the weights of the laced Boolean functions and show that they are almost balanced.
In 2008, Cusick {\it et al.} conjectured that certain elementary symmetric Boolean functions of the form $σ_{2^{t+1}l-1, 2^t}$ are the only nonlinear balanced ones, where $t$, $l$ are any positive integers, and $σ_{n,d}=\bigoplus_{1\le i_1<...<i_d\le n}x_{i_1}x_{i_2}...x_{i_d}$ for positive integers $n$, $1\le d\le n$. In this note, by analyzing the weight of $σ_{n, 2^t}$ and $σ_{n, d}$, we prove that ${\rm wt}(σ_{n, d})<2^{n-1}$ holds in most cases, and so does the conjecture. According to the remainder of modulo 4, we also consider the weight of $σ_{n, d}$ from two aspects: $n\equiv 3({\rm m…
Recently, the construction of Narain CFT from a certain class of quantum error correcting codes has been discovered. In particular, the spectral gap of Narain CFT corresponds to the binary distance of the code, not the genuine Hamming distance. In this paper, we show that the binary distance is identical to the so-called EPC distance of the boolean function uniquely associated with the quantum code. Therefore, seeking Narain CFT with high spectral gap is equivalent to getting a boolean function with high EPC distance. Furthermore, this problem can be addressed by finding lower Peak-to-Average …
We introduce a new class of rate one-half binary codes: {\bf complementary information set codes.} A binary linear code of length $2n$ and dimension $n$ is called a complementary information set code (CIS code for short) if it has two disjoint information sets. This class of codes contains self-dual codes as a subclass. It is connected to graph correlation immune Boolean functions of use in the security of hardware implementations of cryptographic primitives. Such codes permit to improve the cost of masking cryptographic algorithms against side channel attacks. In this paper we investigate thi…
Let $f_n(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)$ denote the algebraic normal form (polynomial form) of a rotation symmetric Boolean function of degree $d$ in $n \geq d$ variables and let $wt(f_n)$ denote the Hamming weight of this function. Let $(1, a_2, \ldots, a_d)_n$ denote the function $f_n$ of degree $d$ in $n$ variables generated by the monomial $x_1x_{a_2} \cdots x_{a_d}.$ Such a function $f_n$ is called {\em monomial rotation symmetric} (MRS). It was proved in a $2012$ paper that for any MRS $f_n$ with $d=3,$ the sequence of weights $\{w_k = wt(f_k):~k = 3, 4, \ldots\}$ satisfies a homogeneous linear …
In this paper we find a complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of the associated Cayley graphs. Precisely, we show that a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is a complete bipartite graph between the support of $f$ and its complement (hence the graph is strongly regular of parameters $e=0,d=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$). Moreover, a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $\neq 2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is strongly $3$-walk-regular (and also strongly $\ell$-walk-regu…
We identify the weights $wt(f_n)$ of a family $\{f_n\}$ of rotation symmetric Boolean functions with the cardinalities of the sets of $n$-periodic points of a finite-type shift, recovering the second author's result that said weights satisfy a linear recurrence. Similarly, the weights of idempotent functions $f_n$ defined on finite fields can be recovered as the cardinalities of curves over those fields and hence satisfy a linear recurrence as a consequence of the rationality of curves' zeta functions. Weil's Riemann hypothesis for curves then provides additional information about $wt(f_n)$. W…
Propagation criterion of degree $l$ and order $k$ ($PC(l)$ of order $k$) and resiliency of vectorial Boolean functions are important for cryptographic purpose (see [1, 2, 3,6, 7,8,10,11,16]. Kurosawa, Stoh [8] and Carlet [1] gave a construction of Boolean functions satisfying $PC(l)$ of order $k$ from binary linear or nonlinear codes in. In this paper, algebraic-geometric codes over $GF(2^m)$ are used to modify Carlet and Kurosawa-Satoh's construction for giving vectorial resilient Boolean functions satisfying $PC(l)$ of order $k$. The new construction is compared with previously known results…
This paper aims to construct optimal Z-complementary code set (ZCCS) with non-power-of-two (NPT) lengths to enable interference-free multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. The existing ZCCSs with NPT lengths, which are constructed from generalized Boolean functions (GBFs), are sub-optimal only with respect to the set size upper bound. For the first time in the literature, we advocate the use of pseudo-Boolean functions (PBFs) (each of which transforms a number of binary variables to a real number as a natural generalization of GBF) for direct constructions of optimal ZCC…
In this paper we define the (edge-weighted) Cayley graph associated to a generalized Boolean function, introduce a notion of strong regularity and give several of its properties. We show some connections between this concept and generalized bent functions (gbent), that is, functions with flat Walsh-Hadamard spectrum. In particular, we find a complete characterization of quartic gbent functions in terms of the strong regularity of their associated Cayley graph.
Let $f_n(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1})$ denote the algebraic normal form (polynomial form) of a rotation symmetric (RS) Boolean function of degree $d$ in $n \geq d$ variables and let $wt(f_n)$ denote the Hamming weight of this function. Let $(0, a_1, \ldots, a_{d-1})_n$ denote the function $f_n$ of degree $d$ in $n$ variables generated by the monomial $x_0x_{a_1} \cdots x_{a_{d-1}}.$ Such a function $f_n$ is called monomial rotation symmetric (MRS). It was proved in a $2012$ paper that for any MRS $f_n$ with $d=3,$ the sequence of weights $\{w_k = wt(f_k):~k = 3, 4, \ldots\}$ satisfies a homogene…
A noisy entropy inequality for boolean functions by Samorodnitsky is applied to binary codes. It is shown that a binary code that achieves capacity on the binary erasure channel admits optimal list size for list decoding on some binary symmetric channels (in a regime where this optimal list size is exponentially large).
