This paper considers discretization of the Lévy process appearing in the Lamperti representation of a strictly positive self-similar Markov process. Limit theorems for the resulting approximation are established under some regularity assumptions on the given Lévy process. Additionally, the scaling limit of a positive self-similar Markov process at small times is provided. Finally, we present an application to simulation of self-similar Lévy processes conditioned to stay positive.
Consider a Lamperti-Kiu Markov additive process $(J_t,ξ_t:t\geq0)$ on $\{+,-\}\times\mathbb{R}\cup\infty$ where $J$ is the modulating Markov chain component. First, we study the finiteness of the exponential functional and then consider its moments and tail asymptotics under Cramer's condition. In the strong subexponential case we determine the subexponential tails of the exponential functional under some further assumptions.
Since the seminal work of Lamperti there is a lot of interest in the understanding of the general structure of self-similar Markov processes. Lamperti gave a representation of positive self-similar Markov processes with initial condition strictly larger than 0 which subsequently was extended to zero initial condition. For real self-similar Markov processes (rssMps) there is a generalization of Lamperti's representation giving a one-to-one correspondence between Markov additive processes and rssMps with initial condition different from the origin. We develop fluctuation theory for Markov additi…

Motivated by various applications, we describe the scaling limits of bivariate Markov chains $(X,J)$ on $\mathbb Z_+ \times \{1,\ldots,κ\}$ where $X$ can be viewed as a position marginal and $\{1,\ldots,κ\}$ is a set of $κ$ types. The chain starts from an initial value $(n,i)\in \mathbb Z_+ \times \{1,\ldots,κ\}$, with $i$ fixed and $n \rightarrow \infty$, and typically we will assume that the macroscopic jumps of the marginal $X$ are rare, i.e. arrive with a probability proportional to a negative power of the current state. We also assume that $X$ is non-increasing. We then observe different …
We present a new approach to positive self-similar Markov processes (pssMps) by reformulating Lamperti's transformation via jump type SDEs. As applications, we give direct constructions of pssMps (re)started continuously at zero if the Lamperti transformed Levy process is spectrally negative. Our paper can be seen as a continuation of similar studies for continuous state branching processes but the approach seems to be more fruitful in the context of pssMps.
In this paper, we obtain a Lamperti type representation for real-valued self-similar Markov processes, killed at their hitting time of zero. Namely, we represent real-valued self-similar Markov processes as time changed multiplicative invariant processes. Doing so, we complete Kiu's work [Stochastic Process. Appl. 10 (1980) 183-191], following some ideas in Chybiryakov [Stochastic Process. Appl. 116 (2006) 857-872] in order to characterize the underlying processes in this representation. We provide some examples where the characteristics of the underlying processes can be computed explicitly.
Positive self-similar Markov processes (pssMp) are positive Markov processes that satisfy the scaling property and it is known that they can be represented as the exponential of a time-changed Lévy process via Lamperti representation. In this work, we are interested in the following problem: what happens if we consider Markov processes in dimension $1$ or $2$ that satisfy self-similarity properties of a more general form than a scaling property ? Can they all be represented as a function of a time-changed Lévy process ? If not, how can Lamperti representation be generalized ? We show that, not…
The Lamperti--Kiu transformation for real-valued self-similar Markov processes (rssMp) states that, associated to each rssMp via a space-time transformation, there is a Markov additive process (MAP). In the case that the rssMp is taken to be an $α$-stable process with $α\in(0,2)$, Chaumont et al. (2013) and Kuznetsov et al. (2014) have computed explicitly the characteristics of the matrix exponent of the semi-group of the embedded MAP, which we henceforth refer to as the {\it Lamperti-stable MAP}. Specifically, the matrix exponent of the Lamperti-stable MAP's transition semi-group can be writt…
The study of discrete-time stochastic processes on the half-line with mean drift at $x$ given by $μ_1 (x) \to 0$ as $x \to \infty$ is known as Lamperti's problem. We give sharp almost-sure bounds for processes of this type in the case where $μ_1 (x)$ is of order $x^{-β}$ for some $β\in (0,1)$. The bounds are of order $t^{1/(1+β)}$, so the process is super-diffusive but sub-ballistic (has zero speed). We make minimal assumptions on the moments of the increments of the process (finiteness of $(2+2β+\varepsilon)$-moments for our main results, so 4th moments certainly suffice) and do not assume th…
We show that any $\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$-valued self-similar Markov process $X$, with index $α>0$ can be represented as a path transformation of some Markov additive process (MAP) $(θ,ξ)$ in $S_{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. This result extends the well known Lamperti transformation. Let us denote by $\widehat{X}$ the self-similar Markov process which is obtained from the MAP $(θ,-ξ)$ through this extended Lamperti transformation. Then we prove that $\widehat{X}$ is in weak duality with $X$, with respect to the measure $π(x/\|x\|)\|x\|^{α-d}dx$, if and only if $(θ,ξ)$ is reversible with respect …
For any two-sided jumping $α$-stable process, where $1 < α< 2$, we find an explicit identity for the law of the first hitting time of the origin. This complements existing work in the symmetric case and the spectrally one-sided case; cf. Yano-Yano-Yor (2009) and Cordero (2010), and Peskir (2008) respectively. We appeal to the Lamperti-Kiu representation of Chaumont-Pantí-Rivero (2011) for real-valued self-similar Markov processes. Our main result follows by considering a vector-valued functional equation for the Mellin transform of the integrated exponential Markov additive process in the Lamp…
An $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Markov process $X^{(x)}_t=(X^{1,x_1}_t,\dots,X^{d,x_d}_t)$, $t\ge0,x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be multi-self-similar with index $(α_1,\dots,α_d)\in[0,\infty)^d$ if the identity in law \[(c_iX_t^{i,x_i/c_i};i=1,\dots,d)_{t\ge0}\ed(X_{ct}^{(x)})_{t\ge0}\,,\] where $c=\prod_{i=1}^dc_i^{α_i}$, is satisfied for all $c_1,\dots,c_d>0$ and all starting point $x$. Multi-self-similar Markov processes were introduced by Jacobsen and Yor \cite{jy} in the aim of extending the Lamperti transformation of positive self-similar Markov processes to $\mathbb{R}^d_+$-valued processes. Th…
A systematic exposition of scale functions is given for positive self-similar Markov processes (pssMp) with one-sided jumps. The scale functions express as convolution series of the usual scale functions associated with spectrally one-sided Lévy processes that underly the pssMp through the Lamperti transform. This theory is then brought to bear on solving the spatio-temporal: (i) two-sided exit problem; (ii) joint first passage problem upwards for the the pssMp and its multiplicative drawdown (resp. drawup) in the spectrally negative (resp. positive) case.
Let $X=(X_t, t\geq 0)$ be a self-similar Markov process taking values in $\mathbb{R}$ such that the state 0 is a trap. In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a self-similar recurrent extension of $X$ that leaves 0 continuously. The condition is expressed in terms of the associated Markov additive process via the Lamperti-Kiu representation. Our results extend those of Fitzsimmons (2006) and Rivero (2005, 2007) where the existence and uniqueness of a recurrent extension for positive self similar Markov processes were treated. In particular, we descri…
In his 1972 paper, John Lamperti characterized all positive self-similar Markov processes as time-changes of exponentials of Levy processes. In the past decade the problem of classifying all non-negative self-similar Markov processes that do not necessarily have zero as a trap has been solved gradually via connections to ladder height processes and excursion theory. Motivated by a recent article of Chaumont, Rivero, Panti we classify via jump-type SDEs the symmetric real-valued self-similar Markov processes that only decrease the absolute value by jumps and leave zero continuously. Our constru…
Understanding the space-time features of how a Lévy process crosses a constant barrier for the first time, and indeed the last time, is a problem which is central to many models in applied probability such as queueing theory, financial and actuarial mathematics, optimal stopping problems, the theory of branching processes to name but a few. In \cite{KD} a new quintuple law was established for a general Lévy process at first passage below a fixed level. In this article we use the quintuple law to establish a family of related joint laws, which we call $n$-tuple laws, for Lévy processes, Lévy pr…
This paper addresses the question of predicting when a positive self-similar Markov process X attains its pathwise global supremum or infimum before hitting zero for the first time (if it does at all). This problem has been studied in Glover et al. (2013) under the assumption that X is a positive transient diffusion. We extend their result to the class of positive self-similar Markov processes by establishing a link to Baurdoux and van Schaik (2013), where the same question is studied for a Levy process drifting to minus infinity. The connection to Baurdoux and van Schaik (2013) relies on the …
Around the 1960s a celebrated collection of papers emerged offering a number of explicit identities for the class of isotropic stable processes in one and higher dimensions; these include, for example, the lauded works of Blumenthal, Getoor, Ray, Port and Rogozin. Amongst other things, these results nicely exemplify the use of standard Riesz potential theory on the unit open ball $\mathbb{B}_d :=\{ x\in \mathbb{R}^d :|x|<1\}$, $\mathbb{R}^d\backslash\mathbb{B}_d$ and $\mathbb{S}_d :=\partial \mathbb{B}_d$ with the, then, modern theory of potential analysis for Markov processes. Following initi…
A semi-Markov process is one that changes states in accordance with a Markov chain but takes a random amount of time between changes. We consider the generalisation to semi-Markov processes of the classical Lamperti law for the occupation time of a two-state Markov process. We provide an explicit expression in Laplace space for the distribution of an arbitrary linear combination of the occupation times in the various states of the process. We discuss several consequences of this result. In particular, we infer the limiting distribution of this quantity rescaled by time in the long-time scaling…
We study a class of self-similar jump type SDEs driven by Hölder-continuous drift and noise coefficients. Using the Lamperti transformation for positive self-similar Markov processes we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for almost sure extinction in finite time. We then show that for certain parameters pathwise uniqueness holds in a restricted sense, namely among solutions spending a Lebesgue-negligible amount of time at 0. A direct power transformation plays a key role.
In recent work, Chaumont et al. [9] showed that is possible to condition a stable process with index $α \in (1,2)$ to avoid the origin. Specifically, they describe a new Markov process which is the Doob h-transform of a stable process and which arises from a limiting procedure in which the stable process is conditioned to have avoided the origin at later and later times. A stable process is a particular example of a real self-similar Markov process (rssMp) and we develop the idea of such conditionings further to the class of rssMp. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the specific case o…
Let $(X_n)_{n \in\mathbb{N}}$ be a $V$-geometrically ergodic Markov chain on a measurable space $\mathbb{X}$ with invariant probability distribution $π$. In this paper, we propose a discretization scheme providing a computable sequence $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ of probability measures which approximates $π$ as $k$ growths to infinity. The probability measure $\widehatπ_k$ is computed from the invariant probability distribution of a finite Markov chain. The convergence rate in total variation of $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ to $π$ is given. As a result, the specific case of first order autoregressiv…
In this paper we identify the asymptotic tail of the distribution of the exit time $τ_C$ from a cone $C$ of an isotropic $α$-self-similar Markov process $X_t$ with a skew-product structure, that is $X_t$ is a product of its radial process and independent time changed angular component $Θ_t$. Under some additional regularity assumptions, the angular process $Θ_t$ killed on exiting from the cone $C$ has the transition density that could be expressed in terms of a complete set of orthogonal eigenfunctions with corresponding eigenvalues of an appropriate generator. Using this fact and some asympto…
For a positive self-similar Markov process, X, we construct a local time for the random set, $Θ$, of times where the process reaches its past supremum. Using this local time we describe an exit system for the excursions of X out of its past supremum. Next, we define and study the ladder process (R,H) associated to a positive self-similar Markov process X, namely a bivariate Markov process with a scaling property whose coordinates are the right inverse of the local time of the random set $Θ$ and the process X sampled on the local time scale. The process (R,H) is described in terms of a ladder p…
Weak approximations have been developed to calculate the expectation value of functionals of stochastic differential equations, and various numerical discretization schemes (Euler, Milshtein) have been studied by many authors. We present a general framework based on semigroup expansions for the construction of higher-order discretization schemes and analyze its rate of convergence. We also apply it to approximate general Lévy driven stochastic differential equations.
This work concerns the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type process associated to a positive self-similar Markov process $(X(t))_{t\geq 0}$ which drifts to $\infty$, namely $U(t):= {\rm e}^{-t}X({\rm e}^t-1)$. We point out that $U$ is always a (topologically) recurrent Markov process and identify its invariant measure in terms of the law of the exponential functional $\hat I := \int_0^\infty \exp(\hatξ_s) {\rm d}s$, where $\hatξ$ is the dual of the real-valued Lévy process $ξ$ related to $X$ by the Lamperti transformation. This invariant measure is infinite (i.e. $U$ is null-recurrent) if and only if $ξ_1\…
Bañuelos and Bogdan (2004) and Bogdan, Palmowski and Wang (2016) analyse the asymptotic tail distribution of the first time a stable (Lévy) process in dimension $d\geq 2$ exists a cone. We use these results to develop the notion of a stable process conditioned to remain in a cone as well as the the notion of a stable process conditioned to absorb continuously at the apex of a cone (without leaving the cone). As self-similar Markov processes we examine some of their fundamental properties through the lens of its Lamperti-Kiu decomposition. In particular we are interested to understand the under…
A multitype continuous-state branching process (MCSBP) ${\rm Z}=({\rm Z}_{t})_{t\geq 0}$, is a Markov process with values in $[0,\infty)^{d}$ that satisfies the branching property. Its distribution is characterised by its branching mechanism, that is the data of $d$ Laplace exponents of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued spectrally positive Lévy processes, each one having $d-1$ increasing components. We give an expression of the probability for a MCSBP to tend to 0 at infinity in term of its branching mechanism. Then we prove that this extinction holds at a finite time if and only if some condition bearing…
We view the classical Lindeberg principle in a Markov process setting to establish a probability approximation framework by the associated Itô's formula and Markov operator. As applications, we study the error bounds of the following three approximations: approximating a family of online stochastic gradient descents (SGDs) by a stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by multiplicative Brownian motion, Euler-Maruyama (EM) discretization for multi-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stable process, and multivariate normal approximation. All these error bounds are in Wasserstein-1 distance.
In this paper we present a novel method for estimating the parameters of a parametric diffusion processes. Our approach is based on a closed-form Maximum Likelihood estimator for an approximating Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC) of the diffusion process. Unlike typical time discretization approaches, such as psuedo-likelihood approximations with Shoji-Ozaki or Kessler's method, the CTMC approximation introduces no time-discretization error during parameter estimation, and is thus well-suited for typical econometric situations with infrequently sampled data. Due to the structure of the CTMC,…
In this paper, we study probabilistic numerical methods based on optimal quantization algorithms for computing the solution to optimal multiple switching problems with regime-dependent state process. We first consider a discrete-time approximation of the optimal switching problem, and analyze its rate of convergence. Given a time step $h$, the error is in general of order $(h \log(1/h))^{1/2}$, and of order $h^{1/2}$ when the switching costs do not depend on the state process. We next propose quantization numerical schemes for the space discretization of the discrete-time Euler state process. …
We study discretizations of polynomial processes using finite state Markov processes satisfying suitable moment matching conditions. The states of these Markov processes together with their transition probabilities can be interpreted as Markov cubature rules. The polynomial property allows us to study such rules using algebraic techniques. Markov cubature rules aid the tractability of path-dependent tasks such as American option pricing in models where the underlying factors are polynomial processes.
By observing that the fractional Caputo derivative can be expressed in terms of a multiplicative convolution operator, we introduce and study a class of such operators which also have the same self-similarity property as the Caputo derivative. We proceed by identifying a subclass which is in bijection with the set of Bernstein functions and we provide several representations of their eigenfunctions, expressed in terms of the corresponding Bernstein function, that generalize the Mittag-Leffler function. Each eigenfunction turns out to be the Laplace transform of the right-inverse of a non-decre…
Modern methods of simulating molecular systems are based on the mathematical theory of Markov operators with a focus on autonomous equilibrated systems. However, non-autonomous physical systems or non-autonomous simulation processes are becoming more and more important. We present a representation of non-autonomous Markov jump processes as autonomous Markov chains on space-time. Augmenting the spatial information of the embedded Markov chain by the temporal information of the associated jump times, we derive the so-called augmented jump chain. The augmented jump chain inherits the sparseness o…
For d nonpolar compact sets K_1,...,K_d in the complex plane, d admissible weights Q_1,...,Q_d, and a positive semidefinite d x d interaction matrix C with no zero column, we define natural discretizations of the associated weighted vector energy of a d-tuple of positive measures μ=(μ_1,...,μ_d) where μ_j is supported in K_j and has mass r_j. We have an L^{\infty}-type discretization W(μ) and an L^2-type discretization J(μ) defined using a fixed measure ν=(ν_1,...,ν_d). This leads to a large deviation principle for a canonical sequence of probability measures on this space of d-tuples of posit…
