In this paper, properties of a link $L$ in the projective space $\mathbb R P^3$ are related to properties of its group $π_1(\mathbb R P^3\smallsetminus L)$:
$L$ is isotopic to a projective line if and only if $π_1(\mathbb R P^3\smallsetminus L)=\mathbb Z$.
$L$ is isotopic to an affine circle if and only if $π_1(\mathbb R P^3\smallsetminus L)=\mathbb Z*\mathbb Z_{/2}$.
$L$ is isotopic to a link disjoint from a projective plane if and only if $π_1(\mathbb R P^3\smallsetminus L)$ contains a non-trivial element of order two.
A simple algorithm which finds a system of generators and relations for $π_1(\mathbb R P^3\smallsetminus L)$ in terms of a link diagram of $L$ is provided.
In this paper, we generalize a result of Satoh to show that for any odd natural $n$, the connected sum of the $n$-twist spun sphere of a knot $K$ and an unknotted projective plane in the 4-sphere is equivalent to the same unknotted projective plane. We additionally provide a fix to a small error in Satoh's proof of the case that $K$ is a 2-bridge knot.
In the classical knot theory there is a well-known notion of descending diagram. From an arbitrary diagram one can easily obtain, by some crossing changes, a descending diagram which is a diagram of the unknot or unlink. In this paper the notion of descending diagram for knots and links in the real space is extended to the case of nonoriented knots and links in the projective space. It is also shown that this notion cannot be extended to oriented links.
Our goal is to systematically compute the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all prime knots up to 8-crossings. We obtain upper bounds on the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus via coherent band surgery. We obtain lower bounds by obstructing homological degrees of potential slice discs. The obstructions are pulled from a variety of sources in low-dimensional topology and adapted to $\mathbb{C}P^2$. There are 27 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 7-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all but 2 of these knots. There are 64 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 8-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb…
In this paper, we demonstrate that the complete hyperbolic structure of various two-bridge knots and links cannot be deformed to an inequivalent strictly convex projective structure. We also prove a complementary result showing that under certain rigidity hypotheses, branched covers of amphicheiral knots admit non-trivial, strictly convex deformations near their complete hyperbolic structure.
We construct knot invariants from the radical part of projective modules of restricted quantum groups. We also show a relation between these invariants and the colored Alexander invariants.
We establish a relationship between the knot symmetries and the automorphisms of the knot quandle. We identify the homeomorphisms of the pair $(S^{3},K)$ that induce the (anti)automorphisms of the fundamental quandle $Q(K)$. We show that every quandle (anti)automorphism of $Q(K)$ is induced by a homeomorphism of the pair $(S^{3},K)$. As an application of those results, we are able to explore some symmetry properties of a knot based on the presentation of its fundamental quandle, which is easily derived from a knot diagram.
We provide a way to produce knots in $S^3$ from signed chord diagrams, and prove that every knot can be produced in this way. Using these diagrams, we generalize the fundamental theorem of finite type invariants. We also provide moves for the diagrams so that any two diagrams for the same knot are connected by a sequence of moves.
In this paper we show that some open set of the representations of the fundamental group of figure-eight knot complement found in \cite{Ballas12a} are the holonomies of a family of finite volume properly convex projective structures on the figure-eight knot complement.
We show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on a large class of two-bridge knots has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies certain conditions. This result gives a supporting evidence to a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson that relates $L$-spaces and the left-orderability of their fundamental groups.
We show that the fundamental quandle defines a functor from the oriented tangle category to a suitably defined quandle category. Given a tangle decomposition of a link $L$, the fundamental quandle of $L$ may be obtained from the fundamental quandles of tangles. We apply this result to derive a presentation of the fundamental quandle of periodic links, composite knots and satellite knots.
We construct elements of the third quandle homology groups of knot quandles, which are called the shadow fundamental classes. They play the same roles for the shadow quandle cocycle invariants of knots as the fundamental classes of knot quandles does for the quandle cocycle invariants. As an application of the shadow fundamental classes, we show the relation between the shadow quandle cocycle invariants and the based shadow quandle cocycle invariants. Moreover, we will show, for a prime knot, that any third quandle homology classes are considered as images of the shadow fundamental classes of …
We prove that the fundamental quandle of the trefoil knot is isomorphic to the projective primitive subquandle of transvections of the symplectic space $\Z \oplus \Z$. The last quandle can be identified with the Dehn quandle of the torus and the cord quandle on a 2-sphere with four punctures. We also show that the fundamental quandle of the long trefoil knot is isomorphic to the cord quandle on a 2-sphere with a hole and three punctures.
We have a knot quandle and a fundamental class as invariants for a surface-knot. These invariants can be defined for a classical knot in a similar way, and it is known that the pair of them is a complete invariant for classical knots. In this paper, we compare a situation in surface-knot theory with that in classical knot theory, and prove the following: There exist arbitrarily many inequivalent surface-knots of genus $g$ with the same knot quandle, and there exist two inequivalent surface-knots of genus $g$ with the same knot quandle and with the same fundamental class.
For any two disjoint oriented circles embedded into the 3-dimensional real projective space, we construct a 3-dimensional configuration space and its map to the projective space such that the linking number of the circles is the half of the degree of the map. Similar interpretations are given for the linking number of cycles in a projective space of arbitrary odd dimension and the self-linking number of a zero homologous knot in the 3-dimensional projective space.
We show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the hyperbolic twist knot $K_m, \, m \ge 2$, has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies the condition $r \in (-4,2m)$ if $m$ is even, and $r \in [0,4] \cup (\frac{4m}ω+4, 2m+4)$ if $m$ is odd, where $ω>1$ is the unique real solution of the equation $x e^{x}=4m$.
Given a knot K we may construct a group G_n(K) from the fundamental group of K by adjoining an nth root of the meridian that commutes with the corresponding longitude. These "generalised knot groups" were introduced independently by Wada and Kelly, and contain the fundamental group as a subgroup. The square knot SK and the granny knot GK are a well known example of a pair of distinct knots with isomorphic fundamental groups. We show that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) are non-isomorphic for all n>1. This confirms a conjecture of Lin and Nelson, and shows that the isomorphism type of G_n(K), n>1, carries …
We show that the 3-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus 2 two-bridge knot $K_{[-2q,2s,-2t,2l]}$ is an L-space and its fundamental group is not left-orderable. Therefore the family of 3-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus 2 two-bridge knot $K_{[-2q,2s,-2t,2l]}$ verifies the $L$-space conjecture. We also show that if $K_{[2k,-2l]}$ is a 2-bridge knot with $k\geq 2$, $l>0$, then the fundamental group of the 5-fold cyclic branched cover of $K_{[2k,-2l]}$ is not left-orderable, which will complete the proof that the fundamental group of the 5-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus one two-b…
In the study of homology cobordisms, knot concordance and link concordance, the following technical problem arises frequently: let $π$ be a group and let $M \to N$ be a homomorphism between projective $\Z[π]$-modules such that $\Z_p \otimes_{\Z[π]} M\to \Z_p \otimes_{\Z[π]} N$ is injective; for which other right $\Z[π]$-modules $V$ is the induced map $V \otimes_{\Z[π]} M\to V\otimes_{\Z[π]}N$ also injective? Our main theorem gives a new criterion which combines and generalizes many previous results.
This work is concerned with the calculation of the fundamental group of torus knots. Torus knots are special types of knots which wind around a torus a number of times in the longitudinal and meridional directions. We compute and describe the fundamental group of torus knots by using some concepts in algebraic topology and group theory. We also calculate the fundamental group of an arbitrary knot by using an algorithm called the Wirtinger presentation.
In the early 1980's Mike Freedman showed that all knots with trivial Alexander polynomial are topologically slice (with fundamental group Z). This paper contains the first new examples of topologically slice knots. In fact, we give a sufficient homological condition under which a knot is slice with fundamental group Z semi-direct product Z[1/2]. These two fundamental groups are known to be the only solvable ribbon groups. Our homological condition implies that the Alexander polynomial equals (t-2)(t^{-1}-2) but also contains information about the metabelian cover of the knot complement (since …
Motivated by Clay and Watson's question on left-orderability of the fundamental group of the resultant space of an $r'$-surgery on the $(p, q)$-cable knots for $r' \in (pq-p-q,pq)$, this paper proves by elementary means that for specific pairs of $(p,q)$-cable knots of torus knots, $r' \in [pq-1,pq]$ gives a surgery yielding non-left orderable fundamental groups.
Given a simply-connected closed 4-manifold $X$ and a smoothly embedded oriented surface $Σ$, various constructions based on Fintushel-Stern knot surgery have produced new surfaces in $X$ that are pairwise homeomorphic to $Σ$, but not diffeomorphic. We prove that for all known examples of surface knots constructed from knot surgery operations that preserve the fundamental group of the complement of surface knots, they become pairwise diffeomorphic after stabilizing by connected summing with one $S^2\tilde{\times}S^2$. When $X$ is spin, we show in addition that any surfaces obtained by a knot su…
In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.
Previous work of the authors establishes a criterion on the fundamental group of a knot complement that determines when Dehn surgery on the knot will have a fundamental group that is not left-orderable. We provide a refinement of this criterion by introducing the notion of a decayed knot; it is shown that Dehn surgery on decayed knots produces surgery manifolds that have non-left-orderable fundamental group for all sufficiently positive surgeries. As an application, we prove that sufficiently positive cables of decayed knots are always decayed knots. These results mirror properties of L-space …
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots resulting in a manifold M(s) having cyclic fundamental group and analyze those leading to a finite fundamental group. The proof uses the theory of cyclic and finite surgeries developed by Culler, Shalen, Boyer, and Zhang. In particular, Culler-Shalen seminorms play a central role.
This paper is a very brief introduction to knot theory. It describes knot coloring by quandles, the fundamental group of a knot complement, and handle-decompositions of knot complements.
The paper gives topological as well as rigid isotopy classification of smooth irreducible algebraic curves in the real projective 3-space for the case when the degree of the curve is at most six and its genus is at most one.
For any hyperbolic twist knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies the inequality $0\le r \le 4$.
We show that fundamental groups of the complements of knotted solenoids in $\mathbb{S}^3$ is solely determined by a canonical sequence of knot groups. Moreover it its determined by the embedding up to mirror reflection.
We obtain a branched spherical CR structure on the complement of the figure eight knot with a given holonomy representation (called rho_2). There are essentially two boundary unipotent representations from the complement of the figure eight knot into PU(2,1), we call them rho_1 and rho_2. We make explicit some fundamental differences between these two representations. For instance, seeing the figure eight knot complement as a surface bundle over the circle, the behaviour of of the fundamental group of the fiber under the representation is a key difference between rho_1 and rho_2.
In this paper we study embeddings of oriented connected closed surfaces in $\mathbb S^3$. We define a complete invariant, the fundamental span, for such embeddings, generalizing the notion of the peripheral system of a knot group. From the fundamental span, several computable invariants are derived and employed to study handlebody knots, bi-knotted surfaces, and chirality of knots. These invariants are capable to distinguish inequivalent handlebody knots and bi-knotted surfaces with homeomorphic complements. Particularly, we obtain an alternative proof of the inequivalence of Ishii et al.'s ha…
We show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot $5_2$, which is the two-bridge knot corresponding to the rational number 3/7, has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies $0\le r\le 4$.
We show that the SL(2,C)-character variety of the (-2,3,n) pretzel knot consists of two (respectively three) algebraic curves when 3 does not divide n (respectively 3 divides n) and give an explicit calculation of the Culler-Shalen seminorms of these curves. Using this calculation, we describe the fundamental polygon and Newton polygon for these knots and give a list of Dehn surgeries yielding a manifold with finite or cyclic fundamental group. This constitutes a new proof of property P for these knots.
For any hyperbolic genus one 2-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ lies in some range which depends on the knot.
We define the property (D) for nontrivial knots. We show that the fundamental group of the manifold obtained by Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ with property (D) with slope $\frac{p}{q}\ge 2g(K)-1$ is not left orderable. By making full use of the fixed point method, we prove that (1) nontrivial knots which are closures of positive $1$-bridge braids have property (D); (2) L-space satellite knots, with positive $1$-bridge braid patterns, and companion with property (D), have property (D); (3) the fundamental group of the manifold obtained by Dehn filling on $v2503$ is not left orderable. Additionally…
We show that if $B$ is an aspherical 2-orbifold in one of the families known to have orbifold fundamental groups of weight 1 then $B$ is the base of a Seifert fibration of a 2-knot manifold $M(K)$.
Given a knot complement X and its p-fold cyclic cover X_p, we identify twisted polynomials associated to 1-dimensional linear representations of the fundamental group of X_p with twisted polynomials associated to related p-dimensional linear representations of the fundamental group of X. This provides a simpler and faster algorithm to compute these twisted polynomials, allowing us to prove that 16 (of 18 previously unknown) algebraically slice knots of 12 or fewer crossings are not slice. We also use this improved algorithm to prove that the 24 mutants of the pretzel knot P(3,7,9,11,15), corre…
The genus of knots is a one of the fundamental invariant and can be seen as a complexity of knots. In this paper, we give a lower bound of genus using Dehornoy floor, which is a measure of complexity of braids in terms of braid ordering.
Motivated by the L-space conjecture, we investigate various notions of order-detection of slopes on knot manifolds. These notions are designed to characterise when rational homology 3-spheres obtained by gluing compact manifolds along torus boundary components have left-orderable fundamental groups and when a Dehn filling of a knot manifold has a left-orderable fundamental group. Our developments parallel existing results in the case of Heegaard-Floer slope detection and foliation slope detection, leading to several conjectured structure theorems that connect relative Heegaard-Floer homology a…
We discuss the fundamental (relative) 3-classes of knots (or hyperbolic links), and provide diagrammatic descriptions of the push-forwards with respect to every link-group representation. The point is an observation of a bridge between the relative group homology and quandle homology from the viewpoints of Inoue--Kabaya map \cite{IK}. Furthermore, we give an algorithm to algebraically describe the fundamental 3-class of any hyperbolic knot.
We consider the classical pretzel knots $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$, where $a_1, a_2, a_3$ are positive odd integers. By using continuous paths of elliptic $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$-representations, we show that (i) the 3-manifold obtained by $\frac{m}{l}$-surgery on $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$ has left orderable fundamental group if $\frac{m}{l} < 1$, and (ii) the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$-cyclic branched cover of $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$ has left orderable fundamental group if $n > 2π/ \arccos(1-2/(1+a_1 a_2 + a_2 a_3 + a_3 a_1))$.
We show that from the asymptotic behavior of an evaluation of the colored Jones polynomial of the figure-eight knot we can extract the Chern--Simons invariant and the twisted Reidemeister torsion associated with a representation of the fundamental group of the knot complement to the two-dimensional complex special linear group.
We show some computations on representations of the fundamental group in SL(2;C) and Reidemeister torsion for a homology 3-sphere obtained by Dehn surgery along the figure-eight knot. This is the second version. We recorrected several errors in the first version.
