In the physics literature, Bilal--Fock--Kogan \cite{BFK} introduced the idea of parabolic reduced flat connections on a surface to give a geometric origin to $W$-algebras. In this paper, we combine these ideas with higher complex structures, geometric structures defined by Fock and the author in \cite{FockThomas}. A semiclassical analysis of the parabolic reduction establishes a direct link between flat connections and higher complex structures.
In particular, we study a certain class of connections on a bundle equipped with a line subbundle $L$, which we call $L$-parabolic. The curvature of these connections is of rank at most 1. We describe a certain family of $L$-parabolic connections with vanishing curvature, giving the data of a higher complex structure and a cotangent variation. Infinitesimal higher diffeomorphisms, the natural class of transformations on higher complex structures, are realized by the infinitesimal gauge transformation induced by changing $L$. Constructing flat families of connections of this kind is linked to Toda integrable systems.
Let $Y$ be a closed $3$-manifold such that all flat $SU(2)$-connections on $Y$ are $non$-$degenerate$. In this article, we prove a Uhlenbeck-type compactness theorem on $Y$ for stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections satisfying an $L^{2}$-bound for the real curvature. Combining the compactness theorem and a previous result in \cite{Huang}, we prove that the moduli space of the stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections is disconnected under certain technical assumptions.
We construct geometric examples of N-differential graded algebras such as the algebra of differential forms of depth $N$ on an affine manifold, and $N$-flat covariant derivatives.
The parallel linear transports defined by flat linear connection are axiomatically described. On this basis a number of properties, some of which are new, of these transports and connections are derived.
Any 7-dimensional cocalibrated G_2-manifold admits a unique connection $\nabla$ with skew symmetric torsion. We study these manifolds under the additional condition that the $\nabla$-Ricci tensor vanishes. In particular, we describe their geometry in case of a maximal number of $\nabla$-parallel vector fields.
On the manifold of positive definite matrices, we investigate the existence of pairs of flat affine connections, dual with respect to a given monotone metric. The connections are defined either using the $α$-embeddings and finding the duals with respect to the metric, or by means of contrast functionals. We show that in both cases, the existence of such a pair of connections is possible if and only if the metric is given by the Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information.
In this short note we study flat metric connections with antisymmetric torsion $T \neq 0$. The result has been originally discovered by Cartan/Schouten in 1926 and we provide a new proof not depending on the classification of symmetric spaces. Any space of that type splits and the irreducible factors are compact simple Lie group or a special connection on $S^7$. The latter case is interesting from the viewpoint of $G_2$-structures and we discuss its type in the sense of the Fernandez-Gray classification. Moreover, we investigate flat metric connections of vectorial type.
We show a correspondence between the set of all G-invariant projectively flat connections on a homogeneous apace $M=G/K$, and the one of all {G}^~-invariant flat connections on a homogeneous space {M}^~={G}^~/K, where {G}^~ is a central extension of G.
The well-known fact that $S^1$, $S^3$ and $S^7$ are parallelizable manifolds admitting flat connections is revisited. The role of torsion in the construction of those flat connections is made explicit, and the possibilities allowed by different metric signatures are examined. A necessary condition for parallelizability in an open region is that the torsion tensor must be covariantly constant. This property can be used to obtain a relation between a torsion-free and flat connections. Our treatment covers Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian (non-Euclidean signature) hyperbolic manifolds of dimensio…
We compute the Riemannian volume on the moduli space of flat connections on a nonorientable 2-manifold, for a natural class of metrics. We also show that Witten's volume formula for these moduli spaces may be derived using Haar measure, and we give a new proof of Witten's volume formula for the moduli space of flat connections on an orientable surface using Haar measure.
We show that the prequantum line bundle on the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$ connections on a closed Riemann surface of positive genus has degree 1. It then follows from work of Lawton and the second author that the classifying map for this line bundle induces a homotopy equivalence between the stable moduli space of flat $SU(N)$ connections, in the limit as $N$ tends to infinity, and $\mathbb{C}P^\infty$. Applications to the stable moduli space of flat unitary connections are also discussed.
Flat connections induced over covering maps are studied and the trivial ones among them are described. In the sequel, we deal with the resulting holonomy bundles.
We show that bi-flat $F$-manifolds can be interpreted as natural geometrical structures encoding the almost duality for Frobenius manifolds without metric. Using this framework, we extend Dubrovin's duality between orbit spaces of Coxeter groups and Veselov's $\vee$-systems, to the orbit spaces of exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups of rank $2$ and $3$. On the Veselov's $\vee$-systems side, we provide a generalization of the notion of $\vee$-systems that gives rise to a dual connection which coincides with a Dunkl-Kohno-type connection associated with such groups. In particula…
We continue our study of symplectically flat bundles. We broaden the notion of symplectically flat connections on symplectic manifolds to $ζ$-flat connections on smooth manifolds. These connections on principal bundles can be represented by maps from an extension of the base's fundamental group to the structure group. We introduce functionals with zeroes being symplectically flat connections and study their critical points. Such functionals lead to novel geometric flows. We also describe some characteristic classes of the $ζ$-flat bundles.
In this note, we extend the theory of Chern-Cheeger-Simons to construct canonical invariants for a one-parameter family of flat connections on a smooth manifold. These invariants lie in degrees $(2p-2)$-cohomology with $\C/\Z$-cohomology, for $p\geq 2$. Furthermore, they are shown to be rigid in a variation of paths (parametrising flat connections), in degrees at least three.
A special linear Lie group over the real number field and the quarternion field admits a projectivley flat affine connection. We show that parabolic subgroups are autoparallel submanifolds and give a criterion the induced connection is projectively equivalent to a flat affine connection.
We shall give a twisted Dirac structure on the space of irreducible connections on a SU(n)-bundle over a three-manifold, and give a family of twisted Dirac structures on the space of irreducible connections on the trivial SU(n)-bundle over a four-manifold. The twist is described by the Cartan 3-form on the space of connections. It vanishes over the subspace of flat connections. So the spaces of flat connections are endowed with ( non-twisted ) Dirac structures. The Dirac structure on the space of flat connections over the three-manifold is obtained as the boundary restriction of a correspondin…
We introduce a symplectic structure on the space of connections in a G-principal bundle over a four-manifold and the Hamiltonian action on it of the group of gauge transformations which are trivial on the boundary. The symplectic reduction becomes the moduli space of flat connections over the manifold. On the moduli space of flat connections we shall construct a hermitian line bundle with connection whose curvature is given by the symplectic form. This is the Chern-Simons prequantum line bundle. The group of gauge transformations on the boundary of the base manifold acts on the moduli space of…
In this paper, we study the CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension with flat normal connection of a complex projective space. We first investigate the position of the umbilical normal vector in the normal bundle, especially for the submanifolds of dimension 3. Then as the application, we prove the non-existence of a class of CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension with flat normal connection.
We prove that any Kaehler manifold admitting a flat complex conformal connection is a Bochner-Kaehler manifold with special scalar distribution and zero geometric constants. Applying the local structural theorem for such manifolds we obtain a complete description of the Kaehler manifolds under consideration.
A local classification of the Hermitian manifolds with flat associated connection is given. Hermitian manifolds admitting locally a conformal metric with flat associated connection are characterized by a curvature identity. Locally conformal Kaehler manifolds as well as Hermitian surfaces with vanishing associated conformal curvature tensor are characterized as locally conformal to a Kaehler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures.
In this paper we study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces. These are surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region in the surface, and where a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the boundaries of the regions. Our main theoretical tool is a new form moment-map reduction in the context of Dirac geometry. This reduction framework allows us to use very general relations of structure groups, and to investigate both the symplectic and Poisson geometry of the resulting moduli spaces from a unified perspective…
We discuss Witten's formulas for the symplectic volumes of moduli spaces of flat connections on 2-manifolds from the viewpoint of Hamiltonian cobordism as introduced by Ginzburg-Guillemin-Karshon.
Any flat connection on a principal fibre bundle comes from a linear representation of the fundamental group. The noncommutative analog of this fact is discussed here.
We investigate Yang--Mills instanton theory over four dimensional asymptotically locally flat (ALF) geometries, including gravitational instantons of this type, by exploiting the existence of a natural smooth compactification of these spaces introduced by Hausel--Hunsicker--Mazzeo. First referring to the codimension 2 singularity removal theorem of Sibner--Sibner and Rade we prove that given a smooth, finite energy, self-dual SU(2) connection over a complete ALF space, its energy is congruent to a Chern--Simons invariant of the boundary three-manifold if the connection satisfies a certain holo…
In this paper, we apply the theory of Chern-Cheeger-Simons to construct canonical invariants associated to a $r$-simplex whose points parametrize flat connections on a smooth manifold $X$. These invariants lie in degrees $(2p-r-1)$-cohomology with $C/Z$-coefficients, for $p> r\geq 1$. In turn, this corresponds to a homomorphism on the higher homology groups of the moduli space of flat connections, and taking values in $C/Z$-cohomology of the underlying smooth manifold $X$.
We shall prove that a moduli space of flat irreducible Lie algebroid connections over a compact manifold has locally a natural structure of a smooth differentiable space. This is a generalization of some well known results for the moduli space of holomorphic structures on a complex vector bundle over a compact complex manifold.
I show that flat PSL(2;R)-connections on three-manifolds satisfying certain 'stability condition' can be interpreted as solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equations with two spinors. This is used to construct explicit examples of the Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces. Also, I show that in this setting blow up sets satisfy certain non-trivial topological restrictions.
The paper presents a classification theorem for the class of flat connections with triangular (0,1)-components on a topologically trivial complex vector bundle over a compact Kahler manifold. As a consequence we obtain several results on the structure of Kähler groups, i.e., the fundamental groups of compact Kahler manifolds.
Given a Hermitian manifold $(M^n,g)$, the Gauduchon connections are the one parameter family of Hermitian connections joining the Chern connection and the Bismut connection. We will call $\nabla^s = (1-\frac{s}{2})\nabla^c + \frac{s}{2}\nabla^b$ the $s$-Gauduchon connection of $M$, where $\nabla^c$ and $\nabla^b$ are respectively the Chern and Bismut connections. It is natural to ask when a compact Hermitian manifold could admit a flat $s$-Gauduchon connection. This is related to a question asked by Yau \cite{Yau}. The cases with $s=0$ (a flat Chern connection) or $s=2$ (a flat Bismut connecti…
We complete the classification of compact Hermitian manifolds admitting a flat Gauduchon connection. In particular, we establish a conjecture of Yang and Zheng, showing that apart from the cases of a flat Chern or Bismut connection, such manifolds are Kähler. More generally, we prove the same result holds when the flatness assumption is replaced by the so-called Kähler-like condition, proving a conjecture of Angella, Otal, Ugarte and Villacampa. We also treat the non-compact case.
Using the interpretation of certain generalised Donaldson-Thomas invariants, including stable pairs curve counts, as the monodromy of a flat connection on a formal principal bundle, we show that the conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa contributions of all genera to the Gromov-Witten partition function appear in the asymptotics of the corresponding flat sections. The Fourier-Laplace integrals used to produce flat sections lead naturally to the GW/DT change of variable -q = e^{i u}.
If we consider the moduli space of flat connections of a non trivial principal SO(3)-bundle over a surface, then we can define a map from the set of perturbed closed geodesics, below a given energy level, into families of perturbed Yang-Mills connections depending on a small parameter. In this paper we show that this map is a bijection and maps perturbed geodesics into perturbed Yang-Mills connections with the same Morse index.
In this paper, we explain how generalized dynamical r-matrices can be obtained by (quasi-)Poisson reduction. New examples of Poisson structures and Poisson groupoid actions naturally appear in this setting. As an application, we use a generalized dynamical r-matrix induced by the gauge fixing procedure to give a new finite dimensional description of the Atiyah-Bott symplectic structure on the moduli space of flat connections on a surface.
The pull back of a flat bundle $E\rightarrow X$ along the evaluation map $π: \mathcal{L} X \to X$ from the free loop space $\mathcal{L} X$ to $X$ comes equipped with a canonical automorphism given by the holonomies of $E$. This construction naturally generalizes to flat $\mathbb{Z}$-graded connections on $X$. Our main result is that the restriction of this holonomy automorphism to the based loop space $Ω_* X$ of $X$ provides an $A_\infty$ quasi-equivalence between the dg category of flat $\mathbb{Z}$-graded connections on $X$ and the dg category of representations of $C_\bullet(Ω_* X)$, the dg…
It is known that there is a bijection between the perturbed closed geodesics, below a given energy level, on the moduli space of flat connections M and families of perturbed Yang-Mills connections depending on a small parameter. In this paper we study the heat flow on the loop space on M and the Yang-Mills L^2-flows for a 3-manifold N with partial rescaled metrics. Our main result is that the bounded Morse homology of the loop space on M is isomorphic to the bounded Morse homologies of the connections space of N.
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
We establish normal form theorems for a large class of singular flat connections on complex manifolds, including connections with logarithmic poles along weighted homogeneous Saito free divisors. As a result, we show that the moduli spaces of such connections admit the structure of algebraic quotient stacks. In order to prove these results, we introduce homogeneous Lie groupoids and study their representation theory. In this direction, we prove two main results: a Jordan-Chevalley decomposition theorem, and a linearization theorem. We give explicit normal forms for several examples of free div…
Given a smooth manifold $M$ equipped with a properly and discontinuous smooth action of a discrete group $G$, the nerve $M_{\bullet}G$ is a simplicial manifold and its vector space of differential forms $\operatorname{Tot}_{N}\left(A_{DR}(M_{\bullet}G)\right)$ carry a $C_{\infty}$-algebra structure $m_{\bullet}$. We show that each $C_{\infty}$-algebra $1$-minimal model $g_{\bullet}\: : \: \left(W, {m'}_{\bullet} \right) \to \left( \operatorname{Tot}_{N}\left(A_{DR}(M_{\bullet}G)\right),m_{\bullet}\right) $ gives a flat connection $\nabla$ on a smooth trivial bundle $E$ on $M$ where the fiber i…
This paper deals with affine connections on real manifolds. We give a new characterization of flat affine connections on real manifolds by means of certain affine representations of the Lie group of automorphisms preserving the connection. Then we specialize the characterization to the case of a left invariant connection on a Lie group. In the last case, we show the existence of a Lie group endowed with a flat affine bi-invariant connection whose Lie algebra contains the Lie algebra of complete infinitesimal affine transformations of the given Lie group. We also prove some results about flat a…
We construct an irreducible holomorphic connection with SL(2,R)-monodromy on the trivial holomorphic vector bundle of rank two over a compact Riemann surface. This answers a question of Calsamiglia, Deroin, Heu and Loray in \cite{CDHL}.
We give an explicit finite-dimensional model for the derived moduli stack of flat connections on $\mathbb{C}^k$ with logarithmic singularities along a weighted homogeneous Saito free divisor. We investigate in detail the case of plane curves of the form $x^p = y^q$ and relate the moduli spaces to the Grothendieck-Springer resolution. We also discuss the shifted Poisson geometry of these moduli spaces. Namely, we conjecture that the map restricting a logarithmic connection to the complement of the divisor admits a shifted coisotropic structure and we construct a shifted Poisson structure on the…
Over the moduli space of rank $n$ semi-stable lattices is a universal family of tori. Along the fibers, there are natural differential operators and differential equations, particularly, the heat equations and the Fokker-Planck equations in statistical mechanics. In this paper, we explain why, by taking averages over the moduli spaces, all these are connected with the zeros of rank $n$ non-abelian zeta functions of the field of rationals, which are known lie on the central line except a finitely many if $n\geq 2$. Certainly, when $n=1$, our current work recovers that of Armitage, which from th…
Let $E\to B$ be a smooth vector bundle of rank $n$, and let $P \in I^p(GL(n,\mathbb{R}))$ be a $GL(n,\mathbb{R})$-invariant polynomial of degree $p$ compatible with a universal integral characteristic class $ u \in H^{2p}(BGL(n,\mathbb{R}),\mathbb{Z})$. Cheeger-Simons theory associates a rigid invariant in $H^{2p-1}(B,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ to any flat connection on this bundle. Generalizing this result, Jaya Iyer (\textit{Letters in Mathematical Physics}, 2016, 106 (1) pp. 131-146) constructed maps $H_r(\mathcal{D}(E)) \to H^{2p-r-1}(B,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ for $p>r+1$ where $\mathcal{D}(E…
We pursuit the research line proposed in \cite{YZ-Gflat} about the classification of Hermitian manifolds whose $s$-Gauduchon connection $\nabla^s =(1-\frac{s}{2})\nabla^c + \frac{s}{2}\nabla^b$ is flat, where $s \in \mathbb{R}$ and $\nabla^c$ and $\nabla^b$ are the Chern and the Bismut connections, respectively. We focus on Lie groups equipped with a left invariant Hermitian structure. Such spaces provide an important class of Hermitian manifolds in various contexts and are often a valuable vehicle for testing new phenomena in complex and Hermitian geometry. More precisely, we consider a conne…
We consider the moduli space of flat $SO(2n+1)$-connections (up to gauge transformations) on a Riemann surface, with fixed holonomy around a marked point. There are natural line bundles over this moduli space; we construct geometric representatives for the Chern classes of these line bundles, and prove that the ring generated by these Chern classes vanishes below the dimension of the moduli space, generalising a conjecture of Newstead.
We consider canonical symplectic structure on the moduli space of flat ${\g}$-connections on a Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points. For ${\g}$ being a semisimple Lie algebra we obtain an explicit efficient formula for this symplectic form and prove that it may be represented as a sum of $n$ copies of Kirillov symplectic form on the orbit of dressing transformations in the Poisson-Lie group $G^{*}$ and $g$ copies of the symplectic structure on the Heisenberg double of the Poisson-Lie group $G$ (the pair ($G,G^{*}$) corresponds to the Lie algebra ${\g}$).
Let $π\colon P\to M$ be a principal bundle and $p$ an invariant polynomial of degree r on the Lie algebra of the structure group. The theory of Chern-Simons differential characters is exploited to define an homology map $χ^{k} : H_{2r-k-1}(M)\times H_{k}(\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G})\to \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, for $k<r-1$, where $\mathcal{F} /\mathcal{G}$ is the moduli space of flat connections of $π$ under the action of a subgroup $\mathcal{G}$ of the gauge group. The differential characters of first order are related to the Dijkgraaf-Witten action for Chern-Simons Theory. The second order charact…
Lecture notes from the Concentrated Graduate Course preceding the Workshop on Hodge Theory in String Theory at the Fields Institute in Toronto, November 11--15, 2013.
In these notes we survey basic concepts of affine geometry and their interaction with Riemannian geometry. We give a characterization of affine manifolds which has as counterpart those pseudo-Riemannian manifolds whose Levi-Civita connection is flat. We show that no connected semisimple Lie group admits a left invariant flat affine connection. We characterize flat pseudo-Riemannian Lie groups. For a flat left-invariant pseudo-metric on a Lie group, we show the equivalence between the completeness of the Levi-Civita connection and unimodularity of the group. We emphasize the case of flat left i…
