In this paper two new classes of stationary random simplicial tessellations, the so-called $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellations, are introduced. Their construction is based on a space-time paraboloid hull process and generalizes that of the classical Poisson-Delaunay tessellation. The distribution of volume-power weighted typical cells is explicitly identified, establishing thereby a remarkable connection to the classes of $β$- and $β'$-polytopes. These representations are used to determine principal characteristics of such cells, including volume moments, expected angle sums and cell intensities.
We study the weak convergence of $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ that were introduced in part I of this paper, as $β\to\infty$. The limiting stationary simplicial random tessellation, which is called the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation, is characterized in terms of a space-time paraboloid hull process in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. The latter object has previously appeared in the analysis of the number of shocks in the solution of the inviscid Burgers' equation and the description of the local asymptotic geometry of Gaussian random polytopes. In this paper it …
The $β$-Delaunay tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ is a generalization of the classical Poisson-Delaunay tessellation. As a first result of this paper we show that the shape of a weighted typical cell of a $β$-Delaunay tessellation, conditioned on having large volume, is close to the shape of a regular simplex in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. This generalizes earlier results of Hug and Schneider about the typical (non-weighted) Poisson-Delaunay simplex. Second, the asymptotic behaviour of the volume of weighted typical cells in high-dimensional $β$-Delaunay tessellation is analysed, as $d\to\infty$. In…
Typical weighted random simplices $Z_μ$, $μ\in(-2,\infty)$, in a Poisson-Delaunay tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are considered, where the weight is given by the $(μ+1)$st power of the volume. As special cases this includes the typical ($μ=-1$) and the usual volume-weighted ($μ=0$) Poisson-Delaunay simplex. By proving sharp bounds on cumulants it is shown that the logarithmic volume of $Z_μ$ satisfies a central limit theorem in high dimensions, that is, as $n\to\infty$. In addition, rates of convergence are provided. In parallel, concentration inequalities as well as moderate deviations are st…
Various mixing properties of $β$-, $β'$- and Gaussian Delaunay tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ are studied. It is shown that these tessellation models are absolutely regular, or $β$-mixing. In the $β$- and the Gaussian case exponential bounds for the absolute regularity coefficients are found. In the $β'$-case these coefficients show a polynomial decay only. In the background are new and strong concentration bounds on the radius of stabilization of the underlying construction. Using a general device for absolutely regular stationary random tessellations, central limit theorems for a number…
Consider a homogeneous Poisson point process of the Euclidean plane and its Voronoi tessellation. The present note discusses the properties of two stationary point processes associated with the latter and depending on a parameter $θ$. The first one is the set of points that belong to some one-dimensional facet of the Voronoi tessellation and are such that the angle with which they see the two nuclei defining the facet is $θ$. The main question of interest on this first point process is its intensity. The second point process is that of the intersections of the said tessellation with a straight…
In this paper, we prove the existence of infinite Gibbs Delaunay Potts tessellations for marked particle configurations. The particle systems has two types of interaction, a so-called \emph{background potential} ensures that small and large triangles are excluded in the Delaunay tessellation, and is similar to the so-called hardcore potential introduced in \cite{Der08}. Particles carry one of $q$ separate marks. Our main result is that for large activities and high \emph{type interaction} strength the model has at least $ q$ distinct translation-invariant Gibbs Delaunay Potts tessellations. Th…
Slicing a Voronoi tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a $k$-plane gives a $k$-dimensional weighted Voronoi tessellation, also known as power diagram or Laguerre tessellation. Mapping every simplex of the dual weighted Delaunay mosaic to the radius of the smallest empty circumscribed sphere whose center lies in the $k$-plane gives a generalized discrete Morse function. Assuming the Voronoi tessellation is generated by a Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we study the expected number of simplices in the $k$-dimensional weighted Delaunay mosaic as well as the expected number of intervals of…
We consider the Voronoi tessellation based on a homogeneous Poisson point process in $\mathbf{R}^{d}$. For a geometric characteristic of the cells (e.g. the inradius, the circumradius, the volume), we investigate the point process of the nuclei of the cells with large values. Conditions are obtained for the convergence in distribution of this point process of exceedances to a homogeneous compound Poisson point process. We provide a characterization of the asymptotic cluster size distribution which is based on the Palm version of the point process of exceedances. This characterization allows us…
We show that random walk on a stationary random graph with positive anchored expansion and exponential volume growth has positive speed. We also show that two families of random triangulations of the hyperbolic plane, the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tessellation and the hyperbolic Poisson Delaunay triangulation, have 1-skeletons with positive anchored expansion. As a consequence, we show that the simple random walks on these graphs have positive speed. We include a section of open problems and conjectures on the topics of stationary geometric random graphs and the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tes…
The order-$k$ Voronoi tessellation of a locally finite set $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ decomposes $\mathbb{R}^n$ into convex domains whose points have the same $k$ nearest neighbors in $X$. Assuming $X$ is a stationary Poisson point process, we give explicit formulas for the expected number and total area of faces of a given dimension per unit volume of space. We also develop a relaxed version of discrete Morse theory and generalize by counting only faces, for which the $k$ nearest points in $X$ are within a given distance threshold.
Since the seminal work of Mecke, Nagel and Weiss, the iteration stable (STIT) tessellations have attracted considerable interest in stochastic geometry as a natural and flexible yet analytically tractable model for hierarchical spatial cell-splitting and crack-formation processes. The purpose of this paper is to describe large scale asymptotic geometry of STIT tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and more generally that of non-stationary iteration infinitely divisible tessellations. We study several aspects of the typical first-order geometry of such tessellations resorting to martingale techniques…
The lower-dimensional maximal polytopes associated with an iteration stable (STIT) tessellation in $\RR^d$ are considered. They arise in the spatio-temporal construction process of such a tessellation as intersections of $(d-1)$-dimensional maximal polytopes. A precise description of the joint distribution of their birth-times is obtained. This in turn is used to determine the probabilities that the typical or the length-weighted typical maximal segment of the tessellation contains a fixed number of internal vertices.
Three-dimensional random tessellations that are stable under iteration (STIT tessellations) are considered. They arise as a result of subsequent cell division, which implies that their cells are not face-to-face. The edges of the cell-dividing polygons are the so-called I-segments of the tessellation. The main result is an explicit formula for the distribution of the number of vertices in the relative interior of the typical I-segment. On the way of its proof other distributional identities for the typical as well as for the length-weighted typical I-segment are obtained. They provide new insi…
Let $\mathfrak{m}$ be a random tessellation in $\mathbf{R}^d$ observed in a bounded Borel subset $W$ and $f(\cdot)$ be a measurable function defined on the set of convex bodies. To each cell $C$ of $\mathfrak{m}$ we associate a point $z(C)$ which is the nucleus of $C$. Applying $f(\cdot)$ to all the cells of $\mathfrak{m}$, we investigate the order statistics of $f(C)$ over all cells $C\in\mathfrak{m}$ with nucleus in $\mathbf{W}_ρ=ρ^{1/d}W$ when $ρ$ goes to infinity. Under a strong mixing property and a local condition on $\mathfrak{m}$ and $f(\cdot)$, we show a general theorem which reduces …
We consider the typical cell of a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation in d-dimensional Euclidean space. It is well known that the expected vertex number of the typical cell is independent of the directional distribution of the hyperplane process. We give sharp bounds for the variance of this vertex number, showing, in particular, that the maximum of the variance is attained if and only if the distribution of the process is rotation invariant with respect to a suitable scalar product. The employed representation of the second moment of the vertex number is a special case of formulas prov…
A new and rather broad class of stationary (i.e. stochastically translation invariant) random tessellations of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is introduced, which are called shape-driven nested Markov tessellations. Locally, these tessellations are constructed by means of a spatio-temporal random recursive split dynamics governed by a family of Markovian split kernel, generalizing thereby the -- by now classical -- construction of iteration stable random tessellations. By providing an explicit global construction of the tessellations, it is shown that under suitable assumptions on the spl…
We generalize the standard site percolation model on the $d$-dimensional lattice to a model on random tessellations of $\mathbb R^d$. We prove the uniqueness of the infinite cluster by adapting the Burton-Keane argument \cite{burton1989density}, develop two frameworks that imply the non-triviality of the phase transition and show that large classes of random tessellations fit into one of these frameworks. Our focus is on a very general approach that goes well beyond the typical Poisson driven models. The most interesting examples might be Voronoi tessellations induced by determinantal processe…
Stationary Poisson processes of lines in the plane are studied whose directional distributions are concentrated on $k \ge 3$ equally spread directions. The random lines of such processes decompose the plane into a collection of random polygons, which form a so-called Poisson line tessellation. The focus of this paper is to determine the proportion of triangles in such tessellations, or equivalently, the probability that the typical cell is a triangle. As a by-product, a new deviation of Miles' classical result for the isotropic case is obtained by an approximation argument.
The typical cell of a Voronoi tessellation generated by $n+1$ uniformly distributed random points on the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb S^d$ is studied. Its $f$-vector is identified in distribution with the $f$-vector of a beta' polytope generated by $n$ random points in $\mathbb R^d$. Explicit formulae for the expected $f$-vector are provided for any $d$ and the low-dimensional cases $d\in\{2,3,4\}$ are studied separately. This implies an explicit formula for the total number of $k$-dimensional faces in the spherical Voronoi tessellation as well.
The concept of splitting tessellations and splitting tessellation processes in spherical spaces of dimension $d\geq 2$ is introduced. Expectations, variances and covariances of spherical curvature measures induced by a splitting tessellation are studied using tools from spherical integral geometry. Also the spherical pair-correlation function of the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure is computed explicitly and compared to its analogue for Poisson great hypersphere tessellations. Finally, the typical cell distribution and the distribution of the typical spherical maximal face of any dimensio…
We observe a realization of a stationary generalized weighted Voronoi tessellation of the d-dimensional Euclidean space within a bounded observation window. Given a geometric characteristic of the typical cell, we use the minus-sampling technique to construct an unbiased estimator of the average value of this geometric characteristic. Under mild conditions on the weights of the cells, we establish variance asymptotics and the asymptotic normality of the unbiased estimator as the observation window tends to the whole space. Moreover, the weak consistency is shown for this estimator.
It is well known that the distributions of the interiors of the typical cell of a Poisson line tessellation and a STIT tessellation with the same parameters coincide. In this paper, differences in the arrangement of the cells in these two tessellation models are investigated. In particular, characteristics of the set of cells neighbouring the typical cell are studied. Furthermore, the pair-correlation function and several mark correlation functions of the point processes of cell centres are estimated and compared.
Spatially homogeneous random tessellations that are stable under iteration (nesting) in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space are considered, so-called STIT tessellations. They arise as outcome of a spatio-temporal process of subsequent cell division and consequently they are not facet-to-facet. The intent of this paper is to develop a detailed analysis of the combinatorial structure of such tessellations and to determine a number of new geometric mean values, for example for the neighborhood of the typical vertex. The heart of the results is a fine classification of tessellation edges based on th…
Consider the distances $\tilde{R}_o$ and $R_o$ from the nucleus to a uniformly random point in the 0-cell and the typical cell, respectively, of the $d$-dimensional Poisson-Voronoi (PV) tessellation. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the exact distributions of $\tilde{R}_o$ and $R_o$. First, using the well-known relationship between the 0-cell and the typical cell, we show that the random variable $\tilde{R}_o$ is equivalent in distribution to the contact distance of the Poisson point process. Next, we derive a multi-integral expression for the exact distribution of $R_o$. Fu…
We consider tessellations of the Euclidean $(d-1)$-sphere by $(d-2)$-dimensional great subspheres or, equivalently, tessellations of Euclidean $d$-space by hyperplanes through the origin; these we call conical tessellations. For random polyhedral cones defined as typical cones in a conical tessellation by random hyperplanes, and for random cones which are dual to these in distribution, we study expectations for a general class of geometric functionals. They include combinatorial quantities, such as face numbers, as well as, for example, conical intrinsic volumes. For isotropic conical tessella…
The concept of typical and weighted typical spherical faces for tessellations of the $d$-dimensional unit sphere, generated by $n$ independent random great hyperspheres distributed according to a non-degenerate directional distribution, is introduced and studied. Probabilistic interpretations for such spherical faces are given and their directional distributions are determined. Explicit formulas for the expected $f$-vector, the expected spherical Quermaßintegrals and the expected spherical intrinsic volumes are found in the isotropic case. Their limiting behaviour as $n\to\infty$ is discussed …
We investigate Voronoi-like tessellations of bipartite quadrangulations on surfaces of arbitrary genus, by using a natural generalization of a bijection of Marcus and Schaeffer allowing to encode such structures into labeled maps with a fixed number of faces. We investigate the scaling limits of the latter. Applications include asymptotic enumeration results for quadrangulations, and typical metric properties of randomly sampled quadrangulations. In particular, we show that scaling limits of these random quadrangulations are such that almost every pair of points are linked by a unique geodesic…
Let $Z$ be the typical cell of a stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The distribution of the number of facets $f(Z)$ of the typical cell is investigated. It is shown, that under a well-spread condition on the directional distribution, the quantity $n^{\frac{2}{d-1}}\sqrt[n]{\mathbb{P}(f(Z)=n)}$ is bounded from above and from below. When $f(Z)$ is large, the isoperimetric ratio of $Z$ is bounded away from zero with high probability. These results rely on one hand on the Complementary Theorem which provides a precise decomposition of the distribution of $Z$ and on the o…
We prove that the Palm measure of the Ginibre process is obtained by removing a Gaussian distributed point from the process and adding the origin. We obtain also precise formulas describing the law of the typical cell of Ginibre--Voronoi tessellation. We show that near the germs of the cells a more important part of the area is captured in the Ginibre--Voronoi tessellation than in the Poisson--Voronoi tessellation. Moment areas of corresponding subdomains of the cells are explicitly evaluated.
We consider spatial stochastic models, which can be applied e.g. to telecommunication networks with two hierarchy levels. In particular, we consider two Cox processes concentrated on the edge set of a random tessellation, where the points can describe the locations of low-level and high-level network components, respectively, and the edge set the underlying infrastructure of the network, like road systems, railways, etc. Furthermore, each low-level component is marked with the shortest path along the edge set to the nearest high-level component. We investigate the typical shortest path length …
Since the seminal work by Nagel and Weiss, the iteration stable (STIT) tessellations have attracted considerable interest in stochastic geometry as a natural and flexible, yet analytically tractable model for hierarchical spatial cell-splitting and crack-formation processes. We provide in this paper a fundamental link between typical characteristics of STIT tessellations and those of suitable mixtures of Poisson hyperplane tessellations using martingale techniques and general theory of piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). As applications, new mean values and new distributional res…
Until now, little was known about properties of small cells in a Poisson hyperplane tessellation. The few existing results were either heuristic or applying only to the two dimensional case and for very specific size functionals and directional distributions. This paper fills this gap by providing a systematic study of small cells in a Poisson hyperplane tessellation of arbitrary dimension, arbitrary directional distribution $φ$ and with respect to an arbitrary size functional $Σ$. More precisely, we investigate the distribution of the typical cell $Z$, conditioned on the event $\{Σ(Z)<a\}$, w…
The zero cell of a parametric class of random hyperplane tessellations depending on a distance exponent and an intensity parameter is investigated, as the space dimension tends to infinity. The model includes the zero cell of stationary and isotropic Poisson hyperplane tessellations as well as the typical cell of a stationary Poisson Voronoi tessellation as special cases. It is shown that asymptotically in the space dimension, with overwhelming probability these cells satisfy the hyperplane conjecture, if the distance exponent and the intensity parameter are suitably chosen dimension-dependent…
In this paper, we are interested in the behavior of the typical Poisson-Voronoi cell in the plane when the radius of the largest disk centered at the nucleus and contained in the cell goes to infinity. We prove a law of large numbers for its number of vertices and the area of the cell outside the disk. Moreover, for the latter, we establish a central limit theorem as well as moderate deviation type results. The proofs deeply rely on precise connections between Poisson-Voronoi tessellations, convex hulls of Poisson samples and germ-grain models in the unit ball. Besides, we derive analogous fac…
A stationary Poisson line tessellation is considered whose directional distribution is concentrated on two different atoms with some positive weights. The shape of the typical cell of such a tessellation is studied when its area or its perimeter tends to zero. In contrast to known results where the area or the perimeter tends to infinity, it is shown that the asymptotic shape of cells having small area is degenerate. Again in contrast to the case of large cells, the asymptotic shape of cells with small perimeter is not uniquely determined. The results are accompanied by a large scale simulatio…
