We observe a realization of a stationary generalized weighted Voronoi tessellation of the d-dimensional Euclidean space within a bounded observation window. Given a geometric characteristic of the typical cell, we use the minus-sampling technique to construct an unbiased estimator of the average value of this geometric characteristic. Under mild conditions on the weights of the cells, we establish variance asymptotics and the asymptotic normality of the unbiased estimator as the observation window tends to the whole space. Moreover, the weak consistency is shown for this estimator.
We develop and analyze a class of unbiased Monte Carlo estimators for multivariate jump-diffusion processes with state-dependent drift, volatility, jump intensity and jump size. A change of measure argument is used to extend existing unbiased estimators for the inter-arrival diffusion to include state-dependent jumps. Under standard regularity conditions on the coefficient and target functions, we prove the unbiasedness and finite variance properties of the resulting jump-diffusion estimators. Numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency of our estimators.
Unbiased estimation for parameters of maximal distribution is a very fundamental problem in the statistical theory of sublinear expectation. In this paper, we proved that the maximum estimator is the largest unbiased estimator for the upper mean and the minimum estimator is the smallest unbiased estimator the the lower mean.
We construct an unbiased estimator for function value evaluated at the solution of a partial differential equation with random coefficients. We show that the variance and expected computational cost of our estimator are finite and our estimator is unsensitive to the problem dimension so that it can be applied in problems across various disciplines. For the error analysis, we connect the parabolic partial differential equations with the expectations of stochastic differential equations and perform rough path estimation.
Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) and unbiased estimators recently proposed by McLeish (Monte Carlo Methods Appl., 2011) and Rhee and Glynn (Oper. Res., 2015) are closely related. This connection is elaborated by presenting a new general class of unbiased estimators, which admits previous debiasing schemes as special cases. New lower variance estimators are proposed, which are stratified versions of earlier unbiased schemes. Under general conditions, essentially when MLMC admits the canonical square root Monte Carlo error rate, the proposed new schemes are shown to be asymptotically as efficient a…
In this paper, we present extensions of the exact simulation algorithm introduced by Beskos et al. (2006). First, a modification in the order in which the simulation is done accelerates the algorithm. In addition, we propose a truncated version of the modified algorithm. We obtain a control of the bias of this last version, exponentially small in function of the truncation parameter. Then, we extend it to more general drift functions. Our main result is an unbiased algorithm to approximate the two first derivatives with respect to the initial condition \(x\) of quantities with the form \(\math…
The excursion set of a $C^2$ smooth random field carries relevant information in its various geometric measures. From a computational viewpoint, one never has access to the continuous observation of the excursion set, but rather to observations at discrete points in space. It has been reported that for specific regular lattices of points in dimensions 2 and 3, the usual estimate of the surface area of the excursions remains biased even when the lattice becomes dense in the domain of observation. In the present work, under the key assumptions of stationarity and isotropy, we demonstrate that th…
We consider the problem of the estimation of the invariant distribution function of an ergodic diffusion process when the drift coefficient is unknown. The empirical distribution function is a natural estimator which is unbiased, uniformly consistent and efficient in different metrics. Here we study the properties of optimality for an other kind of estimator recently proposed. We consider a class of unbiased estimators and we show that they are also efficient in the sense that their asymptotic risk, defined as the integrated mean square error, attains an asymptotic minimax lower bound.
Partial differential equation is a powerful tool to characterize various physics systems. In practice, measurement errors are often present and probability models are employed to account for such uncertainties. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo scheme that yields unbiased estimators for expectations of random elliptic partial differential equations. This algorithm combines multilevel Monte Carlo [Giles, 2008] and a randomization scheme proposed by [Rhee and Glynn, 2012, Rhee and Glynn, 2013]. Furthermore, to obtain an estimator with both finite variance and finite expected computational …
In this paper, we introduce a new approach to constructing unbiased estimators when computing expectations of path functionals associated with stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Our randomization idea is closely related to multi-level Monte Carlo and provides a simple mechanism for constructing a finite variance unbiased estimator with "square root convergence rate" whenever one has available a scheme that produces strong error of order greater than 1/2 for the path functional under consideration.
We consider estimating an expected infinite-horizon cumulative discounted cost/reward contingent on an underlying stochastic process by Monte Carlo simulation. An unbiased estimator based on truncating the cumulative cost at a random horizon is proposed. Explicit forms for the optimal distributions of the random horizon are given, and explicit expressions for the optimal random truncation level are obtained, leading to a full analysis of the bias-variance tradeoff when comparing this new class of randomized estimators with traditional fixed truncation estimators. Moreover, we characterize when…
We propose a new unbiased estimator for estimating the utility of the optimal stopping problem. The MUSE, short for Multilevel Unbiased Stopping Estimator, constructs the unbiased Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) estimator at every stage of the optimal stopping problem in a backward recursive way. In contrast to traditional sequential methods, the MUSE can be implemented in parallel. We prove the MUSE has finite variance, finite computational complexity, and achieves $ε$-accuracy with $O(1/ε^2)$ computational cost under mild conditions. We demonstrate MUSE empirically in an option pricing problem…
We present multivariate unbiased estimators for second, third, and fourth order cumulants $C_2(x,y)$, $C_3(x,y,z)$, and $C_4(x,y,z,w)$. Many relevant new estimators are derived for cases where some variables are average-free or pairs of variables have a vanishing second order cumulant. The well-know Fisher k-statistics is recovered for the single variable case. The variances of several estimators are explicitly given in terms of higher order cumulants and discussed with respect to random processes that are predominately Gaussian. We surprisingly find that the frequently used third order estima…

Many simulation problems require the estimation of a ratio of two expectations. In recent years Monte Carlo estimators have been proposed that can estimate such ratios without bias. We investigate the theoretical properties of such estimators for the estimation of $β= 1/\mathbb{E}\, Z$, where $Z \geq 0$. The estimator, $\widehat β(w)$, is of the form $w/f_w(N) \prod_{i=1}^N (1 - w\, Z_i)$, where $w < 2β$ and $N$ is any random variable with probability mass function $f_w$ on the positive integers. For a fixed $w$, the optimal choice for $f_w$ is well understood, but less so the choice of $w$. W…
We investigate the estimation of specific intrinsic volumes of stationary Boolean models by local digital algorithms; that is, by weighted sums of $n \times\ldots \times n$ configuration counts. We show that asymptotically unbiased estimators for the specific surface area or integrated mean curvature do not exist if the dimension is at least two or three, respectively. For 3-dimensional stationary, isotropic Boolean models, we derive asymptotically unbiased estimators for the specific surface area and integrated mean curvature. For a Boolean model with balls as grains we even obtain an asympto…
