In contrast to massless spinning particles, scalars are not heavily constrained by unitarity and locality. Off-shell, no gauge symmetries are required to write down manifestly local theories, while on-shell consistent factorisation is trivial. Instead a useful classification scheme for scalars is based on the symmetries they can non-linearly realise. Motivated by the breaking of Lorentz boosts in cosmology, in this paper we classify the possible symmetries of a shift-symmetric scalar that is assumed to non-linearly realise Lorentz boosts as, for example, in the EFT of inflation. Our classification method is algebraic; guided by the coset construction and inverse Higgs constraints. We rediscover some known phonon theories within the superfluid and galileid classes, and discover a new galileid theory which we call the $\textit{extended galileid}$. Generic galileids correspond to the broken phase of galileon scalar EFTs and our extended galileids correspond to special subsets where each galileon coupling is fixed by an additional symmetry. We discuss the broken phase of theories that also admit a perturbation theory around Poincaré invariant vacua and we show that the so-called exceptional EFTs, the DBI scalar and special galileon, do not admit such a broken phase. Concentrating on DBI we provide a detailed account of this showing that the scattering amplitudes are secretly Poincaré invariant when the theory is expanded around the superfluid background used in the EFT of inflation. We point out that DBI is an exception to the common lore that the residue of the total energy pole of cosmological correlators is proportional to the amplitude. We also discuss the inevitability of poles in $2 \rightarrow 2$ scattering amplitudes when boost are spontaneously broken meaning that such theories do not admit Adler zeros and generalisations even in the presence of a shift symmetry.
The quantum deformed (1+1) Poincare' algebra is shown to be the kinematical symmetry of the harmonic chain, whose spacing is given by the deformation parameter. Phonons with their symmetries as well as multiphonon processes are derived from the quantum group structure. Inhomogeneous quantum groups are thus proposed as kinematical invariance of discrete systems.
Local symmetries of a non-expanding horizon has been investigated in the 1st order formulation of gravity. When applied to a spherically symmetric isolated horizon only a U(1) subgroup of the Lorentz group survives as residual local symmetry that one can make use of in constructing an effective theory on the horizon.
Near-horizon symmetries are studied for static black hole solutions to Einstein equations containing supertranslation field. We consider general diffeomorphisms which preserve the gauge and the near-horizon structure of the metric. Diffeomorphisms are generated by the vector fields and form a group of near-horizon symmetries. The densities of variation of the surface charge associated to asymptotic horizon symmetries of the metric are calculated in different coordinate systems connected by "large" transformations which change supertranslation field in the metric. Integrability of the variation…
We develop basic tools and matching conditions to interpolate between asymptotic and near horizon symmetries. We focus on black holes in three dimensions. In particular, we match Brown--Henneaux boundary conditions at infinity, which yields two Virasoro algebras, to Heisenberg boundary conditions at the horizon yielding two u(1) current algebras. Our construction allows to equip BTZ black holes with soft hair excitations at the horizon invisible to the asymptotic observer.
We study hidden symmetries, the symmetries associated with the Killing tensors, of the near horizon geometry of odd-dimensional Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in two limits: generic extremal and extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limits. Starting from Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in ellipsoidal coordinates which admits integrable geodesic equations, we obtain the near horizon extremal/EVH geometries and their principal and Killing tensors by taking the near horizon limit. We explicitly demonstrate that geodesic equations are separable and integrable on theses near horizon geometries. We also compute the con…
Using the exact solution to Einstein equations of Compere and Long for the Schwarzschild metric containing supertranslation field, we study the near-horizon symmetries of the metric. We consider class of metrics with supertranslation field depending only on a spherical angle $θ$. After reviewing the action of supertranslations preserving the static gauge of the metric, we study general transformations preserving the near-horizon form of the metric. We determine the asymptotic Killing vectors and calculate the charge corresponding to the asymptotic symmetries preserving the form of the metric a…
The Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group is the asymptotic symmetry group of asymptotically flat gravity. Recently, Donnay et al. have derived an analogous symmetry group acting on black hole event horizons. For a certain choice of boundary conditions, it is a semidirect product of ${\rm Diff}(S^2)$, the smooth diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, acting on $C^\infty(S^2)$, the smooth functions on the two-sphere. We observe that the same group appears in fluid dynamics as symmetries of the compressible Euler equations. We relate these two realizations of ${\rm Diff}(S^2)\ltimes C^\infty(…
Near-horizon symmetries are studied for black hole solutions to Einstein equations containing supertranslation field constructed by Compere and Long. The metric is transformed to variables in which the horizon is located at the surface $r=2M$, where $M$ is the mass of black hole. We consider general diffeomorphisms which preserve the gauge and the near-horizon structure of the metric and find the corresponding transformations of metric components. We review the action of the generators of supertranslations preserving the static gauge of the metric and determine a subgroup of supertranslations …
We investigate asymptotic symmetries regularly defined on spherically symmetric Killing horizons in the Einstein theory with or without the cosmological constant. Those asymptotic symmetries are described by asymptotic Killing vectors, along which the Lie derivatives of perturbed metrics vanish on a Killing horizon. We derive the general form of asymptotic Killing vectors and find that the group of the asymptotic symmetries consists of rigid O(3) rotations of a horizon two-sphere and supertranslations along the null direction on the horizon, which depend arbitrarily on the null coordinate as w…
Asymptotic spacetime symmetries have been conjectured to play an important role in quantum gravity. In this paper we study the breaking of asymptotic symmetries associated with a null horizon boundary. In two-dimensions, these symmetries are reparametrizations of the time parameter on the horizon. We show how this horizon reparametrization symmetry is explicitly and spontaneously broken in dilaton gravity and construct an effective action for these pseudo-Goldstone modes using the on-shell gravitational action for a null boundary. The variation of this action yields the horizon constraint equa…
We determine the asymptotic symmetry group of Killing horizons by choosing Gaussian null coordinates in the neighbourhood of the horizon and boundary conditions that respect the leading order terms in the metric. The analysis divides naturally into the two cases of subextremal and extremal horizons. In general, we find rather involved asymptotic symmetry generators that nevertheless involve supertranslations and Killing vectors on the compact horizon. The most striking observation is the difference in the dependence on the coordinate along the horizon; we relate this to the redshift effect for…
We suggest a way to study possible conformal symmetries on black hole horizons. We do this by carrying out a Kaluza-Klein like reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action along the ignorable coordinates of stationary and axisymmetric black holes. Rigid diffeomorphism invariance of the $m$-ignorable coordinates then becomes a global $SL(m,R)$ gauge symmetry of the reduced action. Related to each non-vanishing angular velocity there is a particular $SL(2,R)$ subgroup, which can be extended to the Witt algebra on the black hole horizons. The classical Einstein-Hilbert action thus has $k$-copies of i…
It has often been suggested (especially by Carlip) that spacetime symmetries in the neighborhood of a black hole horizon may be relevant to a statistical understanding of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. A prime candidate for this type of symmetry is that which is exhibited by the Einstein tensor. More precisely, it is now known that this tensor takes on a strongly constrained (block-diagonal) form as it approaches any stationary, non-extremal Killing horizon. Presently, exploiting the geometrical properties of such horizons, we provide a particularly elegant argument that substantiates this hi…
We consider a BMS-type symmetry action on isolated horizons in asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the viewpoint of the non-relativistic field theory on a horizon membrane, supertranslations shift the field theory spatial momentum. The latter is related by a Ward identity to the particle number symmetry current and is spontaneously broken. The corresponding Goldstone boson shifts the horizon angular momentum and can be detected quantum mechanically. Similarly, area preserving superrotations are spontaneously broken on the horizon membrane and we identify the corresponding gapless modes. In as…
We analyze asymptotic symmetries on the Killing horizon of the four-dimensional Kerr--Newman black hole. We first derive the asymptotic Killing vectors on the Killing horizon, which describe the asymptotic symmetries, and find that the general form of these asymptotic Killing vectors is the universal one possessed by arbitrary Killing horizons. We then construct the phase space associated with the asymptotic symmetries. It is shown that the phase space of an extreme black hole either has the size comparable with a non-extreme black hole, or is small enough to exclude degeneracy, depending on w…

We study the near horizon geometry of both static and stationary extremal Oliva Tempo Troncoso (OTT) black holes. For each of these cases, a set of consistent asymptotic conditions is introduced. The canonical generator for the static configuration is shown to be regular. For the rotating OTT black hole, the asymptotic symmetry is described by the time reparametrization, the chiral Virasoro and centrally extended $u(1)$ Kac-Moody algebras.
We develop a new approach to find asymptotic symmetries in general relativity as a modification of the Lie-algebra-based approach proposed in T. Tomitsuka et al. [Classical Quantum Gravity 38, 225007 (2021)]. Those authors proposed an algorithmic protocol to investigate asymptotic symmetries. In particular, their guiding principle helps us to find a non-vanishing charge that generates an infinitesimal diffeomorphism. However, in order to check the integrability condition for the charges, it is necessary to solve differential equations to identify the integral curve of vector fields, which is u…
It is well known that, for a wide class of spacetimes with horizons, Einstein equations near the horizon can be written as a thermodynamic identity. It is also known that the Einstein tensor acquires a highly symmetric form near static, as well as stationary, horizons. We show that, for generic static spacetimes, this highly symmetric form of the Einstein tensor leads quite naturally and generically to the interpretation of the near-horizon field equations as a thermodynamic identity. We further extend this result to generic static spacetimes in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity, and show that the near…
An extended Hubbard model with phonons is considered on a D-dimensional lattice. The symmetries of the model are studied in various cases. It is shown that for a certain choice of the parameters a superconducting SU_q(2) holds as a true quantum symmetry - but only for D=1. In a natural basis the symmetry requires vanishing local phonon coupling; a quantum symmetric Hubbard model without phonons can then be obtained by a mean field approximation.
We present a novel interpretation of the Hawking temperature of acoustic holes, the hydrodynamic analogue of standard black holes, by connecting the geometrical properties of the horizon with the distribution function of the spontaneously generated phonons. Using covariant kinetic theory to describe the phonon gas emitted by the acoustic hole, we obtain the correct expression of the Hawking temperature by equating the entropy loss of the acoustic horizon with the entropy gain of the phonon gas. In doing this, we assume that the entropy of the acoustic hole is proportional to the area of the ho…
The common intrinsic geometry shared by all the null hypersurfaces gives rise to the asymptotic symmetries found on the null infinities $\mathscr I^\pm$ and the isolated horizons $Δ$. In this work, the properties of a null hypersurface are reviewed and the invariance of its intrinsic geometry ($n^an^bh_{ab}$) is revealed under the spacetime conformal transformation. The generators, i.e., infinitesimal symmetries, of the conformal transformation tangent to the null hypersurface are defined and classified by their effects on the induced metric and the normal vector field. Two particular examples…
We have a new observation that near horizon symmetry generators, corresponding to diffeomorphisms which leave the horizon structure invariant, satisfy noncommutative Heisenberg algebra. The results are valid for any null surfaces (which has Rindler structure in the near null surface limit) and in any spacetime dimensions. Using Sugawara construction technique the central charge is identified. It is shown that the horizon entropy is consistent with the standard form of Cardy formula. Therefore we feel that the noncommutative algebra might leads to quantum mechanics of horizon and also can probe…
We investigate whether supertranslation symmetry may appear in a scenario that involves black holes in AdS space. The framework we consider is massive 3D gravity, which admits a rich black hole phase space, including stationary AdS black holes with softly decaying hair. We consider a set of asymptotic conditions that permits such decaying near the boundary, and which, in addition to the local conformal symmetry, is preserved by an extra local current. The corresponding algebra of diffeomorphisms consists of two copies of Virasoro algebra in semi-direct sum with an infinite-dimensional Abelian …
We study horizon shells and soldering freedom for extreme black holes and how supertranslation-like Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries appear as soldering transformations. Further, for a null shell placed infinitesimally close to the horizon of an extreme Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m (RN) black hole, we show superrotation-like symmetries also arise as soldering freedom. Next, considering the interaction of impulsive gravitational waves supported at the horizon shell with test particles, we study how the "memory" (or the imprints) of BMS-like symmetries gets encoded in the geodesics (test part…
Recent work has demonstrated an attractor mechanism for extremal rotating black holes subject to the assumption of a near-horizon SO(2,1) symmetry. We prove the existence of this symmetry for any extremal black hole with the same number of rotational symmetries as known four and five dimensional solutions (including black rings). The result is valid for a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian vectors and uncharged scalars, allowing for a non-trivial scalar potential. We prove that it remains valid in the presence of higher-derivative corrections. We show that SO(2,1)-symm…
We use group theoretic methods to obtain the extended Lie point symmetries of the quantum dynamics of a scalar particle probing the near horizon structure of a black hole. Symmetries of the classical equations of motion for a charged particle in the field of an inverse square potential and a monopole, in the presence of certain model magnetic fields and potentials are also studied. Our analysis gives the generators and Lie algebras generating the inherent symmetries.
We consider the spacetime geometry of a static but otherwise generic black hole (that is, the horizon geometry and topology are not necessarily spherically symmetric). It is demonstrated, by purely geometrical techniques, that the curvature tensors, and the Einstein tensor in particular, exhibit a very high degree of symmetry as the horizon is approached. Consequently, the stress-energy tensor will be highly constrained near any static Killing horizon. More specifically, it is shown that -- at the horizon -- the stress-energy tensor block-diagonalizes into ``transverse'' and ``parallel'' block…

For a long time it is believed that black hole horizon are thermal and quantum mechanical in nature. The microscopic origin of this thermality is the main question behind our present investigation, which reveals possible importance of near horizon symmetry. It is this symmetry which is assumed to be spontaneously broken by the background spacetime, generates the associated Goldstone modes. In this paper we construct a suitable classical action for those Goldstone modes, and show that all the momentum modes experience nearly the same inverted harmonic potential, leading to an instability. Thank…
We explicitly construct all stationary, non-static, extremal near horizon geometries in $D$ dimensions that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations, and that have $D-3$ commuting rotational symmetries. Our work generalizes [arXiv:0806.2051] by Kunduri and Lucietti, where such a classification had been given in $D=4,5$. But our method is different from theirs and relies on a matrix formulation of the Einstein equations. Unlike their method, this matrix formulation works for any dimension. The metrics that we find come in three families, with horizon topology $S^2 \times T^{D-4}$, or $S^3 \times T…
Black holes behave as thermodynamic systems, and a central task of any quantum theory of gravity is to explain these thermal properties. A statistical mechanical description of black hole entropy once seemed remote, but today we suffer an embarrassment of riches: despite counting very different states, many inequivalent approaches to quantum gravity obtain identical results. Such ``universality'' may reflect an underlying two-dimensional conformal symmetry near the horizon, which can be powerful enough to control the thermal characteristics independent of other details of the theory. This pict…
This article reviews one of the most intriguing properties of black hole spacetimes known in the literature -- gravitational memory effect, and its connection with asymptotic symmetries, also termed as Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries, emerging near the horizon of black holes. Gravitational memory is a non-oscillatory part of the gravitational wave amplitude which generates a permanent displacement for freely falling test particles or test detectors. We highlight a model scenario where asymptotic symmetries appear as a soldering freedom in the context of stitching of two black…
We propose a different approach to the analysis of symmetries in the near-horizon region of black holes. The idea is presented here for spherically symmetric black holes, for which we have shown that the generators of hidden symmetries can be extracted by solving the conformal Killing equation under certain assumptions. Our result is in agreement with that obtained in literature by the analysis of the wave equation in the near-horizon region.
We consider a nearly-AdS$_2$ gravity theory on the two-sided wormhole geometry. We construct three gauge-invariant operators in NAdS which move bulk matter relative to the dynamical boundaries. In a two-sided system, these operators satisfy an SL(2) algebra (up to non-perturbative corrections). In a semiclassical limit, these generators act like SL(2) transformations of the boundary time, or conformal symmetries of the two sided boundary theory. These can be used to define an operator-state mapping. A particular large N and low temperature limit of the SYK model has precisely the same structur…
In this paper, we show that a universe with a dynamical cosmological constant approaching pure de Sitter at timelike infinity, enjoys an infinite dimensional symmetry group at its horizon. This group is larger than the usual $SO(4,1)$ of pure de Sitter. The charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry generators are non-integrable, and we demonstrate that they promote an extended version of the first law of thermodynamics. This contains four pairs of conjugate variables. The pair $(Θ,Λ)$ corresponding to the change in the cosmological constant and its conjugate volume $Θ$. The contribution …
We characterise the geometrical nature of smooth supertranslations defined on a generic non-expanding horizon (NEH) embedded in vacuum. To this end we consider the constraints imposed by the vacuum Einstein's equations on the NEH structure, and discuss the transformation properties of their solutions under supertranslations. We present a freely specifiable data set which is both necessary and sufficient to reconstruct the full horizon geometry, and is composed of objects which are invariant under supertranslations. We conclude that smooth supertranslations do not transform the geometry of the …
We show that the asymptotic symmetries close to nonextremal black hole horizons are generated by an extension of supertranslations. This group is generated by a semidirect sum of Virasoro and Abelian currents. The charges associated with the asymptotic Killing symmetries satisfy the same algebra. When considering the special case of a stationary black hole, the zero mode charges correspond to the angular momentum and the entropy at the horizon.

By using simplified 2D gravitational, non-local Lorentz invariant actions constructed upon the torsion tensor, we discuss the physical meaning of the remnant symmetries associated with the near-horizon (Milne) geometry experienced by a radial observer in Schwarzschild spacetime. We then fully characterize the remnant symmetries corresponding to this near-horizon 2D geometry by solving the motion equations adapted to 2D Milne space. This symmetries, which represent special or privileged \emph{diads}, acquire the form of uniformly accelerated (Rindler) observers whose constant acceleration is pr…
The horizon and geodesic structure of static configurations generated by anisotropic conformal transforms of the Schwarzschild metric is analyzed. We construct the maximal analytic extension of such off--diagonal vacuum metrics and conclude that for small deformations there are different classes of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations describing "black ellipsoid" objects. This is possible because, in general, for off--diagonal metrics with deformed non--spherical symmetries and associated anholonomic frames the conditions of the uniqueness black hole theorems do not hold.
Usual gauge fixing procedures in classical general relativity rely on the existence of solutions of a second order wave equation. We propose to use the equation to relate asymptotic symmetries at infinity to asymptotic symmetries of a black hole horizon, in tune with recent proposals. We illustrate the construction for the BTZ and four-dimensional Kerr black holes. We find in both cases a realization of the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle $S^1$.
We study stationary black holes in the presence of an external strong magnetic field. In the case where the gravitational backreaction of the magnetic field is taken into account, such an scenario is well described by the Ernst-Wild solution to Einstein-Maxwell field equations, representing a charged, stationary black hole immersed in a Melvin magnetic universe. This solution, however, describes a physical situation only in the region close to the black hole. This is due to the following two reasons: Firstly, Melvin spacetime is not asymptotically locally flat; secondly, the non-static Ernst-W…
Recently symmetries of gravity and gauge fields in the asymptotic regions of spacetime have been shown to play vital role in their low energy scattering phenomena. Further, for the black hole spacetime, near horizon symmetry has been observed to play possible role in understanding the underlying degrees of freedom for thermodynamic behaviour of horizon. Following the similar idea, in this paper, we analyzed the symmetry and associated algebra near a timelike surface which is situated at any arbitrary radial position and is embedded in black hole spacetime. In this paper we considered both Schw…
In this paper we consider a generally covariant theory of gravity, and extend the generalized off-shell ADT current such that it becomes conserved for field dependent (asymptotically) Killing vector field. Then we define the extended off-shell ADT current and the extended off-shell ADT charge. Consequently, we define the conserved charge perturbation by integrating from the extended off-shell ADT charge over a spacelike codimension two surface. Eventually, we use the presented formalism to find the conserved charge perturbation of an asymptotically flat spacetime. The conserved charge perturba…
We prove that non-extremal black holes in four-dimensional general relativity exhibit an infinite-dimensional symmetry in their near horizon region. By prescribing a physically sensible set of boundary conditions at the horizon, we derive the algebra of asymptotic Killing vectors, which is shown to be infinite-dimensional and includes, in particular, two sets of supertranslations and two mutually commuting copies of the Virasoro algebra. We define the surface charges associated to the asymptotic diffeomorphisms that preserve the boundary conditions and discuss the subtleties of this definition…
In thermal states of chiral theories, as recently investigated by H.-J. Borchers and J. Yngvason, there exists a rich group of hidden symmetries. Here we show that this leads to a radical converse of of the Hawking-Unruh observation in the following sense. The algebraic commutant of the algebra associated with a (heat bath) thermal chiral system can be used to reprocess the thermal system into a ground state system on a larger algebra with a larger localization space-time. This happens in such a way that the original system appears as a kind of generalized Unruh restriction of the ground state…
Gravitational memory effect has emerged as a new window and opened up several intriguing avenues in the field of gravitational wave astronomy together with its inter-connection to asymptotic symmetries (AS). The recent developments in this direction have drawn considerable attention from theoretical as well as observational perspectives. It has been shown that such effects can also be recovered near the horizon of black holes which might play a crucial role in understanding the information paradox. With this motivation, we have studied the gravitational memory effect near the horizon of black …
To ask a question about a black hole in quantum gravity, one must restrict initial or boundary data to ensure that a black hole is actually present. For two-dimensional dilaton gravity, and probably a much wider class of theories, I show that the imposition of a spacelike ``stretched horizon'' constraint modifies the algebra of symmetries, inducing a central term. Standard conformal field theory techniques then fix the asymptotic density of states, reproducing the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The states responsible for black hole entropy can thus be viewed as ``would-be gauge'' states that beco…
We consider the Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity (GMMG) model in the first order formalism. We show that all the solutions of the Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constants solve the equations of motion of considered model. Then we find an expression for the off-shell conserved charges of this model. By considering the near horizon geometry of a three dimensional black hole in the Gaussian null coordinates, we find near horizon conserved charges and their algebra. The obtained algebra is centrally extended. By writing the algebra of conserved charges in terms of Fourier modes and…
