A method to derive the convenient representations for many two-photon amplitudes is suggested. It is based on the use of the gauge in which the photon propagator has only space components. The amplitudes obtained have no any strong numerical cancellations and, therefore, are very convenient for numerical evaluations. Our approach is illustrated by the consideration of the processes $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-e^+e^-$, $e^+e^-\rightarrow e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$, and $e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-π^+π^-$. The method is extended on the case of polarized particles. The amplitudes obtained in this approach have been employed for extension of the event generator developed by F.A. Berends, P.H. Daverveldt, and R. Kleiss.
The consistent construction of scattering amplitudes for processes with off-shell initial partons and involving electro-weak interactions is addressed.
The Helicity Structure Functions in the Drell-Yan process are discussed in a framework of Parton Reggeization Approach, which includes the transverse momentum of initial-state partons in a way compatible with QED gauge-invariance. Relationships with conventional Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Model formalism are clarified.
Vertex operators for photo- and electro-production of baryon states with arbitrary spin-parity, $ γ+ N\to B(J^P)$, are constructed. The operators obey gauge invariance and analyticity constraints. Analyticity is realized as a requirement of the generalized Siegert theorem for vertex form factors.
We discuss the hadron tensor of the direct photon production. We study the effects which lead to the soft breaking of factorization by inspection of the corresponding QCD gauge invariance. We emphasize that the special role is played by the contour gauge for gluon fields. We demonstrate that the different prescriptions in the gluonic pole contributions are dictated by the presence of initial or final state interactions in diagrams. Moreover, the different prescriptions that correspond to the initial of final state interactions are needed to ensure the QCD gauge invariance.
We study the gauge invariance of the decay rate of the false vacuum for the model in which the scalar field responsible for the false vacuum decay has gauge quantum number. In order to calculate the decay rate, one should integrate out the field fluctuations around the classical path connecting the false and true vacua (i.e., so-called bounce). Concentrating on the case where the gauge symmetry is broken in the false vacuum, we show a systematic way to perform such an integration and present a manifestly gauge-invariant formula of the decay rate of the false vacuum.
For gauge theory, the matrix element for any physical process is independent of the gauge used. Since this is a formal statement and examples are known where gauge invariance is violated, for any specific process this gauge invariance needs to be checked by explicit calculation. In this paper, gauge invariance is found to hold for a large non-trivial class of processes described by tree diagrams in the standard model -- tree diagrams with two external $W$ bosons and any number of external Higgs bosons. This verification of gauge invariance is quite complicated, and is based on a direct study o…
An exact expression is derived for the meson production current off the nucleon for real and virtual photons which cleanly separates, in a model-independent manner, a tree-level expression that manifestly preserves local gauge invariance in terms of a generalized Ward-Takahashi identity from transverse final-state-interaction (FSI) terms. As discussed in some detail, this exact formulation is particularly well suited for implementing approximation schemes of exchange-current and FSI contributions (which in practice generally will be necessary) at any level of sophistication without violating l…
Gauge invariance and soft limits can be enough to determine the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in certain theories. This prompts the question of how gauge invariance is connected to analytic structure in more general theories. Here we focus on QED in background plane waves. We show that imposing gauge invariance introduces new virtuality poles into internal momenta on which amplitudes factorise into a series of terms. Each term is gauge invariant, has a different analytic structure in external momenta, and exhibits a hard/soft factorisation. The introduced poles are dictated by in…
There are different operators of quark and gluon momenta, orbital angular momenta, and gluon spin in the nucleon structure study. The precise meaning of these operators are studied based on gauge invariance, Lorentz covariance and canonical quantization rule. The advantage and disadvantage of different definitions are analyzed. A gauge invariant canonical decomposition of the total momentum and angular momentum into quark and gluon parts is suggested based on the decomposition of the gauge potential into gauge invariant (covariant) physical part and gauge dependent pure gauge part. We derive the finite one-loop counterterm required to restore the Ward Identities broken by the regularization scheme in chiral gauge theories. Our result is an analytic expression applicable to a wide class of regularizations satisfying a few general properties. We adopt the background field method, which ensures background gauge invariance in the quantized theory, and focus on renormalizable chiral theories with arbitrary gauge group and fermions in general representations. Our approach can be extended to theories involving scalars, such as the Standard Model, or to non-renormalizable theori…
