The collapse of a massive star with low angular momentum content is commonly argued to result in the formation of a black hole without an accompanying bright transient. Our goal in this Letter is to understand the flow in and around a newly-formed black hole, involving accretion and rotation, via general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations aimed at studying the conditions under which infalling material can accrete without forming a centrifugally supported structure and, as a result, generate no effective feedback. If the feedback from the black hole is, on the other hand, significant, the collapse would be halted and we suggest that the event is likely to be followed by a bright transient. We find that feedback is only efficient if the specific angular momentum of the infalling material at the innermost stable circular orbit exceeds that of geodesic circular flow at that radius by at least $\approx 20\%$. We use the results of our simulations to constrain the maximal stellar rotation rates of the disappearing massive progenitors PHL293B-LBV and N6946-BH1, and to provide an estimate of the overall rate of disappearing massive stars. We find that about a few percent of single O-type stars with measured rotational velocities are expected to spin below the critical value before collapse and are thus predicted to vanish without a trace.
We provide a general analysis on the properties of emitting material of some rapidly evolving and luminous transients discovered recently with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey. It is found that these transients are probably produced by a low-mass non-relativistic outflow that is continuously powered by a newly born, rapidly spinning, and highly magnetized neutron star. Such a system could originate from an accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf or a merger of a neutron star-neutron star binary. Therefore, observations to these transients would be helpful for constraining white dwarf and…

We present a Spitzer/IRS low-resolution mid-infrared spectrum (5-14 micron) of the luminous transient discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 300 in May 2008. The spectrum, obtained three months after discovery, shows that the transient is very luminous in the mid-IR. Furthermore, the spectrum shows strong, broad emission features at 8 and 12 micron that are observed in Galactic carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae. Combining these data with published optical and near-IR photometry obtained at the same epoch, we find that the mid-IR excess traced by the Spitzer spectrum accounts for ~20% of the tot…

Stellar Tidal Disruptions by Newborn Neutron Stars or Black Holes: A Mechanism for Hydrogen-poor (Super)luminous Supernovae and Fast Blue Optical Transients
We report the discovery of a luminous late-time source at the position of the fast blue optical transient (FBOT) AT2018cow on images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 714 d and 1136 d after its explosion. This source is detected at both UV and optical wavelengths and has prominent H$α$ emission. It has a very stable brightness between the two epochs and a very blue spectral energy distribution (SED) consistent with $f_λ$ $\propto$ $λ^{-4.1 \pm 0.1}$, i.e. the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of a hot blackbody with a very high temperature of log($T$/K) $>$ 4.6 and luminosity of log($L$/$L_\odot$…
Simplified analytic methods are frequently used to model the light curves of supernovae and other energetic transients and to extract physical quantities, such as the ejecta mass and amount of radioactive heating. The applicability and quantitative accuracy of these models, however, have not been clearly delineated. Here we carry out a systematic study comparing certain analytic models to numerical radiation transport calculations. We show that the neglect of time-dependent diffusion limits the accuracy of common Arnett-like analytic models, and that the widely-applied Arnett's rule for inferr…
We show that for supergiants, net angular momentum is not a necessary condition for forming accretion discs during core-collapse. Even absent net rotation, convective motions in the outer parts of supergiants generate mean horizontal flows at a given radius with velocities of order 1 km/s; the direction of the mean flow will vary as a function of height through the convection zone. We confirm these analytic estimates using Cartesian Boussinesq convection simulations. These mean horizontal flows lead to a random angular momentum in supergiant convection zones that exceeds that of the last stabl…
We study 31 luminous, rapidly evolving optical transients (REOTs), and use the magnetar model and the ejecta--circumstellar-matter (CSM) interaction (CSI) model to fit their multiband light curves. We find that 28 events can be fitted by the magnetar model. and the derived masses ($\sim0.05$--5.58\,M$_\odot$) are consistent with that of stripped and ultrastripped core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). On the other hand, the CSI model can fit 25 events; the derived ejecta masses are $\sim 3$--30\,M$_\odot$, consistent with that of SNe~Ibn. The results, together with the fact that many luminous REOTs…
We study the evolution and final outcome of long-lived (${\approx}10^5$ years) remnants from the merger of a He white dwarf (WD) with a more massive C/O or O/Ne WD. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics ($\texttt{MESA}$), we show that these remnants have a red giant configuration supported by steady helium burning, adding mass to the WD core until it reaches $M_{\rm core}\approx 1.12-1.20 M_\odot$. At that point, the base of the surface convection zone extends into the burning layer, mixing the helium burning products (primarily carbon and magnesium) throughout the convective e…
The photon spectral energy distribution of the powerful transient Sw J1644+57 resembles those of the brightest Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The transient nature of Sw J1644+57 is likely the result of a tidal disruption of a star by a super-massive black hole. The stellar disk generates accretion power at super-Eddington rates and the observational properties of Sw J1644+57 indicate -- in analogy with ULXs -- that the accretion flow maintains a high level of radiative efficiency with a corresponding super-Eddington luminosity. Due to its similarity to ULXs, this powerful transient may b…
The fast-rising blue optical transient AT2018cow indicated unusual early phase characteristics unlike relatively better studied explosive transients. Its afterglow may be produced by either a relativistically beamed (jetted) or intrinsically luminous (non-jetted) ejecta and carries observational signatures of the progenitor and environment. High resolution monitoring can distinguish between these scenarios and clarify the progenitor nature. We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of AT2018cow at 5 GHz involving 21 radio telescopes from the European VLBI Network with fi…
In the past decade, several rapidly-evolving transients have been discovered whose timescales and luminosities are not easily explained by traditional supernovae (SN) models. The sample size of these objects has remained small due, at least in part, to the challenge of detecting short timescale transients with traditional survey cadences. Here we present the results from a search within the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1-MDS) for rapidly-evolving and luminous transients. We identify 10 new transients with a time above half-maximum of less than 12 days and -16.5 > M > -20 mag. This increas…
Newly-born, rapidly-spinning magnetars have been invoked as the power sources of super-luminous transients, including the class of "fast-luminous optical transients" (FBOTs). The extensive multi-wavelength analysis of AT2018cow, the first FBOT discovered in real time, is consistent with the magnetar scenario and offers an unprecedented opportunity to comprehend the nature of these sources and assess their broader implications. Using AT2018cow as a prototype, we investigate high-energy neutrino and cosmic ray production from FBOTs and the more general class of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe). …
Newborn black holes in collapsing massive stars can be accompanied by a fallback disk. The accretion rate is typically super-Eddington and strong disk outflows are expected. Such outflows could be directly observed in some failed explosions of compact (blue supergiants or Wolf-Rayet stars) progenitors, and may be more common than long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Using an analytical model, we show that the fallback disk outflows produce blue UV-optical transients with a peak bolometric luminosity of ~10^(42-43) erg s^-1 (peak R-band absolute AB magnitudes of -16 to -18) and an emission duration …
The disk instability picture gives a plausible explanation for the behavior of soft X-ray transient systems if self-irradiation of the disk is included. We show that there is a simple relation between the peak luminosity (at the start of an outburst) and the decay timescale. We use this relation to place constraints on systems assumed to undergo disk instabilities. The observable X-ray populations of elliptical galaxies must largely consist of long-lived transients, as deduced on different grounds by Piro and Bildsten (2002). The strongly-varying X-ray source HLX-1 in the galaxy ESO 243-49 can…
We present new light curves and spectra for a number of extragalactic optical transients or "SN impostors" related to giant eruptions of LBVs, and we provide a comparative discussion of LBV-like giant eruptions known to date. New data include photometry and spectroscopy of SNe1999bw, 2000ch, 2001ac, 2002bu, 2006bv, and 2010dn. SN2010dn resembles SN2008S and NGC 300-OT, whereas SN2002bu shows spectral evolution from a normal LBV at early times to a twin of these cooler transients at late times. SN2008S, NGC300-OT, and SN2010dn appear to be special cases of a broader eruptive phenomenon where th…
We study mass loss from the outer Lagrange point (L2) in binary stellar mergers and their luminous transients by means of radiative hydrodynamical simulations. Previously, we showed that for binary mass ratios 0.06 < q < 0.8, synchronous L2 mass loss results in a radiatively inefficient, dust-forming unbound equatorial outflow. A similar outflow exists irrespective of q if the ratio of the sound speed to the orbital speed at the injection point is sufficiently large, ε= c_T/v_orb > 0.15. By contrast, for cold L2 mass-loss (ε< 0.15) from binaries with q < 0.06 or q > 0.8, the equatorial outflow…
Luminous fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) such as AT2018cow form a rare class of engine-powered explosions of uncertain origin. A hallmark feature of these events is radio/millimeter synchrotron emission powered by the interaction of fast (v > 0.1 c) ejecta and dense circumstellar material (CSM) extending to large radii > 1e16 cm surrounding the progenitor. Assuming this CSM to be an outflow from the progenitor, we show that dust grains up to ~1 micron in size can form in the outflow in the years before the explosion. This dusty CSM would attenuate the transient's ultraviolet (UV) emissio…
We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_ν\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from …
Observations of the extragalactic ($z=0.0141$) transient AT2018cow established a new class of energetic explosions shocking a dense medium, which produce luminous emission at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. Here we present detailed millimeter- through centimeter-wave observations of a similar transient, ZTF20acigmel (AT2020xnd) at $z=0.2433$. Using observations from the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and the Very Large Array, we model the unusual millimeter and radio emission from AT2020xnd under several different assumptions, and ultimately favor synchrotron radiation from a th…

Supernovae (SNe) Type Ibn are rapidly evolving and bright (M$_\text{R,peak}$ $\sim-19$) transients interacting with He-rich circumstellar material (CSM). SN 2018bcc, detected by the ZTF shortly after explosion, provides the best constraints on the shape of the rising light curve (LC) of a fast Type Ibn. Aims: We used the high-quality data set of SN 2018bcc to study observational signatures of the class. Additionally, the powering mechanism of SN 2018bcc offers insights into the debated progenitor connection of Type Ibn SNe. Methods: We compared well-constrained LC properties obtained from empi…
The origin of the most luminous subclass of the fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) is still unknown. We present an X-ray spectral analysis of AT2018cow-the LFBOT archetype-using NuSTAR, Swift, and XMM-Newton data. The source spectrum can be explained by the presence of a slim accretion disk, and we find that the mass accretion rate decreases to sub-Eddington levels >~ 200 days after the source's discovery. Applying our slim disk model to data obtained at multiple observational epochs, we constrain the mass of the central compact object in AT2018cow to be log(M_BH/Msun)=2.4+0.6/-0.1 at the 6…
Rapidly evolving transients, or objects that rise and fade in brightness on timescales two to three times shorter than those of typical Type Ia or Type II supernovae (SNe), have uncertain progenitor systems and powering mechanisms. Recent studies have noted similarities between rapidly evolving transients and Type Ibn SNe, which are powered by ejecta interacting with He-rich circumstellar material (CSM). In this work we present multiband photometric and spectroscopic observations from Las Cumbres Observatory and Swift of four fast-evolving Type Ibn SNe. We compare these observations with those…
Energetic nuclear outbursts have been discovered in luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) at unexpectedly high rates. To investigate this population of transients, we performed a search in mid-IR data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite and its NEOWISE survey to detect and characterise luminous and smoothly evolving transients in a sample of 215 U/LIRGs. We report three new transients, all with $ΔL > 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in addition to two previously known cases. Their host galaxies are all part of major galaxy mergers, and through radiative transfe…
We discuss the importance and potential contribution of Athena+ to the science questions related to gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events and supernova shock break-out. Athena+ will allow breakthrough observations involving high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations of high-z gamma-ray bursts, observations of tidal disruption events tailored to determine the mass and potentially the spin of the black hole responsible for the tidal disruption and observations of X-rays from the supernova shock breakout providing a measure of the radius of the exploding star or of the companion in the …
We present a systematic study of the most luminous ($M_{\mathrm{IR}}$ [Vega magnitudes] brighter than $-14$) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies ($D < 35$ Mpc). The sample consists of nine events that span peak IR luminosities of $M_{[4.5],\mathrm{peak}}$ between $-14$ and $-18.2$, show IR colors between $0.2 < ([3.6]{-}[4.5]) < 3.0$, and fade on timescales between $55$ days $< t_{\mathrm{fade}} < 480$ days. The two reddest events ($A_V > 12$) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several…
Wide-field optical surveys have begun to uncover large samples of fast (t_rise < 5d), luminous (M_peak < -18), blue transients. While commonly attributed to the breakout of a supernova shock into a dense wind, the great distances to the transients of this class found so far have hampered detailed investigation of their properties. We present photometry and spectroscopy from a comprehensive worldwide campaign to observe AT2018cow (ATLAS18qqn), the first fast-luminous optical transient to be found in real time at low redshift. Our first spectra (<2 days after discovery) are entirely featureless.…
To determine the epoch of reionization precisely and to reveal the property of inhomogeneous reionization are some of the most important topics of modern cosmology. Existing methods to investigate reionization which use cosmic microwave background, Ly$α$ emitters, quasars, or gamma ray bursts, have difficulties in terms of accuracy or event rate. We propose that recently discovered fast luminous blue transients (FLBTs) have a potential as a novel probe of reionization. We study the detectability of FLBTs at the epoch of reionization with upcoming WFIRST Wide-Field Instruments (WFI), using a st…
A class of optical transients known as Luminous Red Novae (LRNe) have recently been associated with mass ejections from binary stars undergoing common-envelope evolution. We use the population synthesis code COMPAS to explore the impact of a range of assumptions about the physics of common-envelope evolution on the properties of LRNe. In particular, we investigate the influence of various models for the energetics of LRNe on the expected event rate and light curve characteristics, and compare with the existing sample. We find that the Galactic rate of LRNe is $\sim 0.2$ yr$^{-1}$, in agreement…
For decades optical time-domain searches have been tuned to find ordinary supernovae, which rise and fall in brightness over a period of weeks. Recently, supernova searches have improved their cadences and a handful of fast-evolving luminous transients (FELTs) have been identified. FELTs have peak luminosities comparable to Type Ia supernovae, but rise to maximum in $<10$ days and fade from view in $<$month. Here we present the most extreme example of this class thus far, KSN2015K, with a rise time of only 2.2 days and a time above half-maximum ($t_{1/2}$) of only 6.8 days. Here we show that, …

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SNIc-BL) PTF10qts, which was discovered as part of the Palomar Transient Factory. The supernova was located in a dwarf galaxy of magnitude $r=21.1$ at a redshift $z=0.0907$. We find that the $R$-band light curve is a poor proxy for bolometric data and use photometric and spectroscopic data to construct and constrain the bolometric light curve. The derived bolometric magnitude at maximum light is $M_{\rm bol} = -18.51\pm0.2$ mag, comparable to that of SN 1998bw ($M_{\rm bol} = -18.7$ mag) which was associated w…

We report the appearance of a new radio source at a projected offset of 460 pc from the nucleus of Cygnus A. The flux density of the source (which we designate Cygnus A-2) rose from an upper limit of <0.5 mJy in 1989 to 4 mJy in 2016 (nu=8.5 GHz), but is currently not varying by more than a few percent per year. The radio luminosity of the source is comparable to the most luminous known supernovae, it is compact in VLBA observations down to a scale of 4 pc, and it is coincident with a near-infrared point source seen in pre-existing adaptive optics and HST observations. The most likely interpre…
We performed a wide-area (2000 deg$^{2}$) g and I band experiment as part of a two month extension to the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory. We discovered 36 extragalactic transients including iPTF17lf, a highly reddened local SN Ia, iPTF17bkj, a new member of the rare class of transitional Ibn/IIn supernovae, and iPTF17be, a candidate luminous blue variable outburst. We do not detect any luminous red novae and place an upper limit on their rate. We show that adding a slow-cadence I band component to upcoming surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility will improve the photometric selec…
Progenitor models for the "luminous" subclass of Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs; prototype: AT2018cow) are challenged to simultaneously explain all of their observed properties: fast optical rise times < days; peak luminosities >1e44 erg/s; low yields <0.1 Msun of 56Ni; aspherical ejecta with a wide velocity range (<3000 km/s to > 0.1-0.5 c with increasing polar latitude); presence of hydrogen-depleted-but-not-free dense circumstellar material (CSM) on radial scales from ~1e14 cm to ~3e16 cm; embedded variable source of non-thermal X-ray/gamma-rays, suggestive of a compact object. We sho…
We present follow-up observations of an optical transient (OT) discovered by ROTSE on Jan. 21, 2009. Photometric monitoring was carried out with ROTSE-IIIb in the optical and Swift in the UV up to +70 days after discovery. The light curve showed a fast rise time of ~10 days followed by a steep decline over the next 60 days, which was much faster than that implied by 56Ni - 56Co radioactive decay. The SDSS DR10 database contains a faint, red object at the position of the OT, which appears slightly extended. This and other lines of evidence suggest that the OT is of extragalactic origin, and thi…
We present the discovery of ASASSN-18jd (AT 2018bcb), a luminous optical/UV/X-ray transient located in the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX J22434289--1659083 at $z=0.1192$. Over the year after discovery, Swift UVOT photometry shows the UV SED of the transient to be well modeled by a slowly shrinking blackbody with temperature $T \sim 2.5 \times 10^{4} \rm ~K$, a maximum observed luminosity of $L_\text{max} = 4.5^{+0.6}_{-0.3} \times 10^{44} \rm ~erg ~s^{-1}$, and a radiated energy of $E = 9.6^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{51} \rm ~erg$. X-ray data from Swift XRT and XMM-Newton show a transient, variabl…
We present detailed submillimeter- through centimeter-wave observations of the extraordinary extragalactic transient AT2018cow. The apparent characteristics -- the high radio luminosity, the long-lived emission plateau at millimeter bands, and the sub-relativistic velocity -- have no precedent. A basic interpretation of the data suggests $E_k \gtrsim 10^{48}$ erg coupled to a fast but sub-relativistic ($v \approx 0.13c$) shock in a dense ($n_e \approx 3 \times 10^{5}\,$cm$^{-3}$) medium. We find that the X-ray emission is not naturally explained by an extension of the radio-submm synchrotron s…
The evolution of different types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the coupled radiative/physical changes in the accretion disk are still poorly understood. In a few black hole binaries it was found that fast evolution of QPOs is associated with spectral variations. Such studies in other black hole binaries are important to understand the QPO phenomenon. For the black hole transient XTE J1817-330, we study fast QPO transitions and accompanying spectral variations to investigate what causes the spectral variation during the QPO transition. Roy et al. (2011) found QPOs in ten RXTE observ…
We present the observation of an extraordinary luminous soft X-ray transient, MAXI J0158-744, by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 2011 November 11. This transient is characterized by a soft X-ray spectrum, a short duration (1.3 x 10^3 s < ΔT_d < 1.10 x 10^4 s), a very rapid rise (< 5.5 x 10^3 s), and a huge peak luminosity of 2 x 10^40 erg s^-1 in 0.7-7.0 keV band. With Swift observations and optical spectroscopy from the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS), we confirmed that the transient is a nova explosion, on a white dwarf in a binary with a Be star, …
