Suppose A is a unital subhomogeneous C*-algebra. We show that every central sequence in A is hypercentral if and only if every pointwise limit of a sequence of irreducible representations is multiplicity free. We also show that every central sequence in A is trivial if and only if every pointwise limit of irreducible representations is irreducible. We also give a nice repesentation of the latter algebras.
A unital $C^*$-algebra is called $N$-subhomogeneous if its irreducible representations are finite dimensional with dimension at most $N$. We extend this notion to operator systems, replacing irreducible representations by boundary representations. This is done by considering the matrix state space associated with an operator system and identifying the boundary representations as absolute matrix extreme points. We show that two $N$-subhomogeneous operator systems are completely order equivalent if and only if they are $N$-order equivalent. Moreover, we show that a unital $N$-positive map into a…
A new category of topological spaces with additional structures, called m-towers, is introduced. It is shown that there is a covariant functor which establishes a one-to-one correspondences between unital (resp. arbitrary) subhomogeneous C*-algebras and proper (resp. proper pointed) m-towers of finite height, and between all *-homomorphisms between two such algebras and morphisms between m-towers corresponding to these algebras.
We show that finitely generated subhomogeneous C*-algebras have finite decomposition rank. As a consequence, any separable ASH C*-algebra can be written as an inductive limit of subhomogeneous C*-algebras each of which has finite decomposition rank. It then follows from work of H. Lin and of the second named author that the class of simple unital ASH algebras which have real rank zero and absorb the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially satisfies the Elliott conjecture.
We consider unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop C*-algebras They are so-called ASH-algebras and include all unital simple AH-algebras and all dimension drop $C^*$-algebras. Suppose that $A$ is one of these C*-algebras. We show that $A\otimes Q$ has tracial rank no more than one, where $Q$ is the rational UHF-algebra. As a consequence, we obtain the following classification result: Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop algebras with no dimension growth. Then $A\cong B$ if and only if they have the same Elliott invariant.
Let A be a unital simple direct limit of recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras with no dimension growth. We give criteria which specify exactly when A has real rank zero, and exactly when A has the Property (SP): every nonzero hereditary subalgebra of A contains a nonzero projection. Specifically, A has real rank zero if and only if the natural map from K_0 (A) to the continuous affine functions on the tracial state space has dense range, A has the Property (SP) if and only if the range of this map contains strictly positive functions with arbitrarily small norm. By comparison with results for …
We introduce and characterize a particularly tractable class of unital type 1 C*-algebras with bounded dimension of irreducible representations. Algebras in this class are called recursive subhomogeneous algebras, and they have an inductive description (through iterated pullbacks) which allows one to carry over from algebras of the form C (X, M_n) many of the constructions relevant in the study of the stable rank and K-theory of simple direct limits of homogeneous C*-algebras. Our characterization implies in particular that if A is a separable C*-algebra whose irreducible representations all h…
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
This paper explores the following regularity properties and their relationships for simple, not-necessarily-unital C*-algebras: (i) Jiang-Su stability, (ii) Unperforation in the Cuntz semigroup, and (iii) slow dimension growth (applying only in the case that the C*-algebra is approximately subhomogeneous). An example is given of a simple, separable, nuclear, stably projectionless C*-algebra whose Cuntz semigroup is not almost unperforated. This example is in fact approximately subhomogeneous. It is also shown that, in contrast to this example, when an approximately subhomogeneous simple C*-alg…
We prove the following results for a unital simple direct limit $A$ of recursive subhomogeneous algebras with no dimension growth: (1) A has stable rank 1. (2) The projections in $M_{\infty} (A)$ satisfy cancellation: if $e \oplus q \sim f \oplus q$, then $e \sim f$. (3) $A$ satisfies Blackadar's Second Fundamental Comparability Question: if $p, q \in M_{\infty} (A)$ are projections such that $τ(p) < τ(q)$ for all normalized traces $τ$ on $A$, then $p$ is equivalent to a subprojection of $q$. (4) $K_0 (A)$ is unperforated for the strict order: if $η\in K_0 (A)$ and there is $n > 0$ such that $…
We prove that the infinite tensor power of a unital separable C*-algebra absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially if and only if it contains, unitally, a subhomogeneous algebra without characters. This yields a succinct universal property for Z in a category so large that there are no unital separable C*-algebras without characters known to lie outside it. This category moreover contains the vast majority of our stock-in-trade separable amenable C*-algebras, and is closed under passage to separable superalgebras and quotients, and hence to unital tensor products, unital direct limits, and cr…
Let $A$ be a separable, unital, simple C*-algebra with stable rank one. We show that every strictly positive, lower semicontinuous, affine function on the simplex of normalized quasitraces of $A$ is realized as the rank of an operator in the stabilization of $A$. Assuming moreover that $A$ has locally finite nuclear dimension, we deduce that $A$ is $\mathcal{Z}$-stable if and only if it has strict comparison of positive elements. In particular, the Toms-Winter conjecture holds for separable, unital, simple, approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebras with stable rank one.
Let A be an approximately subhomogeneous (ASH) C*-algebra with slow dimension growth. We prove that if A is unital and simple, then the Cuntz semigroup of A agrees with that of its tensor product with the Jiang-Su algebra Z. In tandem with a result of W. Winter, this yields the equivalence of Z-stability and slow dimension growth for unital simple ASH algebras. This equivalence has several consequences, including the following classification theorem: unital ASH algebras which are simple, have slow dimension growth, and in which projections separate traces are determined up to isomorphism by th…
In this article I study a number of topological and algebraic dimension type properties of simple C*-algebras and their interplay. In particular, a simple C*-algebra is defined to be (tracially) (m,\bar{m})-pure, if it has (strong tracial) m-comparison and is (tracially) \bar{m}-almost divisible. These notions are related to each other, and to nuclear dimension. The main result says that if a separable, simple, nonelementary, unital C*-algebra A with locally finite nuclear dimension is (m,\bar{m})-pure, then it absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. It follows that A is Z-stable if and on…
We show that unital simple C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero which are locally approximated by subhomogeneous C^-algebras can be classified by their ordered $K$-theory. We apply this classification result to show that certain simple crossed products are isomorphic if they have the same ordered $K$-theory. In particular, irrational higher dimensional non-commutative tori of the form $C({\mathbb T}^k)\times_θ{\mathbb Z}$ are in fact inductive limits of circle algebras.
We investigate C*-algebras whose central sequence algebra has no characters, and we raise the question if such C*-algebras necessarily must absorb the Jiang-Su algebra (provided that they also are separable). We relate this question to a question of Dadarlat and Toms if the Jiang-Su algebra always embeds into the infinite tensor power of any unital C*-algebra without characters. We show that absence of characters of the central sequence algebra implies that the C*-algebra has the so-called strong Corona Factorization Property, and we use this result to exhibit simple nuclear separable unital C…

We study variants of the Dixmier property that apply to elements of a unital C*-algebra, rather than to the C*-algebra itself. By a Dixmier element in a C*-algebra we understand one that can be averaged into a central element by means of a sequence of unitary mixing operators. Examples include all self-commutators and all quasinilpotent elements. We do a parallel study of an element-wise version of weak centrality, where the averaging to the centre is done using unital completely positive elementary operators (as in Magajna's characterization of weak centrality). We also obtain complete descri…
Let A be a unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear C*-algebra with at least one tracial state. We prove that if the trace space of A has compact finite-dimensional extreme boundary then there exist unital embeddings of matrix algebras into a certain central sequence algebra of A which is determined by the uniform topology on the trace space. As an application, it is shown that if furthermore A has strict comparison then A absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially.
We study properties of the central sequence algebra of a C*-algebra, and we present an alternative approach to a recent result of Matui and Sato. They prove that every unital separable simple nuclear C*-algebra, whose trace simplex is finite dimensional, tensorially absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra if and only if it has the strict comparison property. We extend their result to the case where the extreme boundary of the trace simplex is closed and of finite topological dimension. We are also able to relax the assumption on the C*-algebra of having the strict comparison property to a weaker property…
In this paper, we introduce some classes of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. Consider the class of unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebras which are tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (or have tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, or have the property $\rm SP$, or are $m$-almost divisible). Then $A$ is tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (respectively, has tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, has the property $\rm SP$, is weakly ($n, m$)-almost divisible) for any simple unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebra $A$ in the corresponding class of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebra…
It is shown that a unital C*-algebra A has the Dixmier property if and only if it is weakly central and satisfies certain tracial conditions. This generalises the Haagerup-Zsido theorem for simple C*-algebras. We also study a uniform version of the Dixmier property, as satisfied for example by von Neumann algebras and the reduced C*-algebras of Powers groups, but not by all C*-algebras with the Dixmier property, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a simple unital C*-algebra with unique tracial state to have this uniform property. We give further examples of C*-algebras with t…
Let $M$ and $N$ be unital Jordan-Banach algebras, and let $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$ denote the sets of invertible elements in $M$ and $N$, respectively. Suppose that $\mathfrak{M}\subseteq M^{-1}$ and $\mathfrak{N}\subseteq N^{-1}$ are clopen subsets of $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$, respectively, which are closed for powers, inverses and products of the form $U_{a} (b)$. In this paper we prove that for each surjective isometry $Δ: \mathfrak{M}\to \mathfrak{N}$ there exists a surjective real-linear isometry $T_0: M\to N$ and an element $u_0$ in the McCrimmon radical of $N$ such that $Δ(a) = T_0(a) +u_0$ f…
We answer the title question for sigma-unital C*-algebras. The answer is that the algebra must be the direct sum of a dual C*-algebra and a C*-algebra satisfying a certain local unitality condition. We also discuss similar problems in the context of Hilbert C*-bimodules and imprimitivity bimodules and in the context of centralizers of Pedersen's ideal.
We give a number of equivalent conditions (including weak centrality) for a general $C^*$-algebra to have the centre-quotient property. We show that every $C^*$-algebra $A$ has a largest weakly central ideal $J_{wc}(A)$. For an ideal $I$ of a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a central element of $A/I$ to lift to a central element of $A$. This leads to a characterisation of the set $V_A$ of elements of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra $A$ which prevent $A$ from having the centre-quotient property. The complement $\mathrm{CQ}(A):= A \setminus V_A$ always conta…
We show that a simple separable unital nuclear nonelementary $C^*$-algebra whose tracial state space has a compact extreme boundary with finite covering dimension admits uniformly tracially large order zero maps from matrix algebras into its central sequence algebra. As a consequence, strict comparison implies $\Z$-stability for these algebras.
Let $A$ be a unital AF-algebra whose Murray-von Neumann order of projections is a lattice. For any two equivalence classes $[p]$ and $[q]$ of projections we write $[p]\sqsubseteq [q]$ iff for every primitive ideal $\mathfrak p$ of $A$ either $p/\mathfrak p\preceq q/\mathfrak p\preceq (1- q)/\mathfrak p$ or $p/\mathfrak p\succeq q/\mathfrak p \succeq (1-q)/\mathfrak p.$ We prove that $p$ is central iff $[p]$ is $\sqsubseteq$-minimal iff $[p]$ is a characteristic element in $K_0(A)$. If, in addition, $A$ is liminary, then each extremal state of $K_0(A)$ is discrete, $K_0(A)$ has general comparab…
We show that if A is a simple Villadsen algebra of either the first type with seed space a finite dimensional CW complex, or of the second type, then $A$ absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially if and only if the central sequence algebra of A does not admit characters. Additionally, in a joint appendix with Joan Bosa, we show that the Villadsen algebra of the second type with infinite stable rank fails the Corona Factorization Property, thus providing the first example of a unital, simple, separable and nuclear $C^\ast$-algebra with a unique tracial state which fails to have this property.
Let $\mathcal {A}$ be a unital $\ast$-algebra. For $A, B\in\mathcal{A}$, define by $[A, B]_{*}=AB-BA^{\ast}$ and $A\bullet B=AB+BA^{\ast}$ the new products of $A$ and $B$. In this paper, under some mild conditions on $\mathcal {A}$, it is shown that a map $Φ:\mathcal {A}\rightarrow \mathcal {A}$ satisfies $Φ([A\bullet B, C]_{*})=[Φ(A)\bullet B, C]_{*}+[A\bullet Φ(B), C]_{*}+[A\bullet B, Φ(C)]_{*}$ for all $A, B,C\in\mathcal {A}$ if and only if $Φ$ is an additive $*-$derivation. In particular, we apply the above result to prime $\ast$-algebras, von Neumann algebras with no central summands of t…

Given a unital $*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ together with a suitable positive filtration of its set of irreducible bounded representations, one can construct a C$^*$-algebra $A_0$ with a dense two-sided ideal $A_c$ such that $\mathscr{A}$ maps into the multiplier algebra of $A_c$. When the filtration is induced from a central element in $\mathscr{A}$, we say that $\mathscr{A}$ is an s$^*$-algebra. We also introduce the notion of $\mathscr{R}$-algebra relative to a commutative s$^*$-algebra $\mathscr{R}$, and of Hopf $\mathscr{R}$-algebra. We formulate conditions such that the completion of a Hopf…
