Consider an essentially nonbranching metric measure space with the measure contraction property of Ohta and Sturm, or with a Ricci curvature lower bound in the sense of Lott, Sturm and Villani. We prove a sharp upper bound on the inscribed radius of any subset whose boundary has a suitably signed lower bound on its generalized mean curvature. This provides a nonsmooth analog to a result of Kasue (1983) and Li (2014). We prove a stability statement concerning such bounds and - in the Riemannian curvature-dimension (RCD) setting - characterize the cases of equality.
We consider a family of embedded, mean convex hypersurfaces which evolve by the mean curvature flow. It follows from general results of White that the inscribed radius at each point on the surface is at least $\frac{c}{H}$, where $c$ is a constant that depends only on the initial data. Andrews recently gave a new proof of that fact using a direct monotonicity argument. In this paper, we improve this result and show that the inscribed radius is at least $\frac{1}{(1+δ) \, H}$ at each point where the curvature is large.
In a recent paper, Brendle proved that the inscribed radius of closed embedded mean convex hypersurfaces moving by mean curvature flow is at least 1/((1+δ)H) at all points with H > C(δ,M_0). In this note, we give a shorter proof of Brendle's estimate, and of a more general result for alpha-Andrews flows, based on our recent estimates from Haslhofer-Kleiner.
We consider a family of embedded, mean convex hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold which evolve by the mean curvature flow. We show that, given any number $T>0$ and any $δ>0$, we can find a constant $C_0$ with the following property: if $t \in [0,T)$ and $p$ is a point on $M_t$ where the curvature is greater than $C_0$, then the inscribed radius is at least $\frac{1}{(1+δ) \, H}$ at the point $p$. The constant $C_0$ depends only on $δ$, $T$, and the initial data.
We study Riemannian manifolds with boundary under a lower Bakry-E'mery Ricci curvature bound. In our weighted setting, we prove several rigidity theorems for such manifolds with boundary. We conclude a rigidity theorem for the inscribed radii, a volume growth rigidity theorem for the metric neighborhoods of the boundaries, and various splitting theorems. We also obtain rigidity results for the smallest Dirichlet eigenvalues for the weighted p-Laplacians.
We study comparison geometry of manifolds with boundary under a lower $N$-weighted Ricci curvature bound for $N\in ]-\infty,1]\cup [n,+\infty]$ with $\varepsilon$-range introduced by Lu-Minguzzi-Ohta. We will conclude splitting theorems, and also comparison geometric results for inscribed radius, volume around the boundary, and smallest Dirichlet eigenvalue of the weighted $p$-Laplacian. Our results interpolate those for $N\in [n,+\infty[$ and $\varepsilon=1$, and for $N\in ]-\infty,1]$ and $\varepsilon=0$ by the second named author.
In this paper, we study the injectivity radius bound for 3-d Ricci flow. As applications we show the long time existence of the Ricci flow with positive Ricci curvature. We also partially settle a question in page 302 of the book of Chow-Lu-Ni (2006).
In this paper we obtain a simple upper bound for the infimum of the Ricci curvatures of a complete Riemannian manifold with nonzero injectivity radius i(M) depending only on of the i(M). In case of rigidity the Riemannian manifold must be an Euclidean sphere(Euclidean space) conform the injectivity radius be finite(infinite). Furthermore with the additional assumption that the second derivative of the Ricci tensor is null we prove that the same upper bound for the infimum of the Ricci curvatures holds for the supremum of the Ricci curvatures and $M^n$ has, in fact, parallel Ricci tensor.
A lower-bound estimate of injectivity radius for complete Riemannian manifolds is discussed in a pure geometric viewpoint and is applied to study tangent cones at infinity of certain gradient Ricci solitons. We also study the asymptotic volume ratio of gradient Ricci solitons.
We construct a uniform local bound of curvature operator from local bounds of Ricci curvature and injectivity radius among all $n$-dimensional Ricci flows. Thus new compactness theorems for the Ricci flow and Ricci solitons are derived. In particular, we show that every Ricci flow with $|Ric|\leq K$ must satisfy $|Rm|\leq Ct^{-1}$ for all $t\in (0,T]$, where $C$ depends only on the dimension $n$ and $T$ depends on $K$ and the injectivity radius $inj_{g(t)}$. In the second part of this paper, we discuss the behavior of Ricci curvature and its derivative when the injectivity radius is thoroughly…
We prove that for any complete three-manifold with a lower Ricci curvature bound and a lower bound on the volume of balls of radius one, a solution to the Ricci flow exists for short time. Actually our proof also yields a (non-canonical) way to flow and regularize some interior region of a non-complete initial data satisfying the aformentioned bounds.
In this note we provide several lower bounds for the volume of a geodesic ball within the injectivity radius in a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold assuming only upper bounds for the Ricci curvature.
Let (M,d) be a metric space. For 0<r<R, and p in M let G(p,r,R) be the group obtained by considering all loops based at p whose image is contained in the closed ball of radius r and identifying two loops if there is a homotopy betweeen them that is contained in the open ball of radius R. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the G(p,r,R) groups of complete open manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also find relationships between the G(p,r,R) groups and tangent cones at infinity of a metric space and show that any tangent cone at infinity of a complete open manifold of nonne…
We give an optimal estimate for the norm of any submanifold's second fundamental form in terms of its focal radius and the lower sectional curvature bound of the ambient manifold. This is a special case of a similar theorem for intermediate Ricci curvature, and leads to a $C^{1,α}$ compactness result for submanifolds, as well as a "soul-type" structure theorem for manifolds with nonnegative $k^{th}$--intermediate Ricci curvature that have a closed submanifold with dimension $\geq k$ and infinite focal radius. To prove these results, we use the comparison lemma for Jacobi fields from arXiv:1603…
Consider a sequence of pointed n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifolds {(M_i,g_i(t), O_i)} such that t in [0,T] are solutions to the Ricci flow and g_i(t) have uniformly bounded curvatures and derivatives of curvatures. Richard Hamilton showed that if the initial injectivity radii are uniformly bounded below then there is a subsequence which converges to an n-dimensional solution to the Ricci flow. We prove a generalization of this theorem where the initial metrics may collapse. Without injectivity radius bounds we must allow for convergence in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a space which i…
We define a notion of mean curvature flow with surgery for two-dimensional surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with positive mean curvature. Our construction relies on the earlier work of Huisken and Sinestrari in the higher dimensional case. One of the main ingredients in the proof is a new estimate for the inscribed radius established by the first author.
We consider smooth complete solutions to Ricci flow with bounded curvature on manifolds without boundary in dimension three. Assuming an open ball at time zero of radius one has curvature bounded from below by -1, then we prove estimates which show that compactly contained subregions of this ball will be smoothed out by the Ricci flow for a short but well defined time interval. The estimates we obtain depend only on the initial volume of the ball and the distance from the compact region to the boundary of the initial ball. Versions of these estimates for balls of radius r follow using scaling …
We draw elliptic regularity results for 4-manifolds with an elliptic system, without Sobolev constant control. Direct use of analysis is circumvented; the results come mainly through geometric and topological arguments. In contrast to our previous paper, which worked predominantly on the scale of the curvature radius, the results here provide curvature controls on a fixed scale.
We study critical Riemannian 4-manifolds with a lower bound on Ricci curvature, but no a priori analytic constraints such as on Sobolev constants. We derive elliptic-type estimates for the local curvature radius, which itself controls sectional curvature. The primary method is construction of blow-ups of degenerating metrics, followed by a geometric/topological triviality result from a previous work.
Let $(M^3,g_0)$ be a complete noncompact Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. Suppose that the scalar curvature $R(x)\to 0$ as $x\to \infty$. Then the Ricci flow with initial data $(M^3,g_0)$ has a long time solution. This extends a recent result of Ma and Zhu. We also have a higher dimensional version, and we reprove a K$\ddot{a}$hler analogy due to Chau, Tam and Yu.
We announce a new proof of the uniform estimate on the curvature of solutions to the Ricci flow on a compact Kähler manifold $M^n$ with positive bisectional curvature. In contrast to the recent work of X. Chen and G. Tian, our proof of the uniform estimate does not rely on the exsitence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on $M^n$, but instead on the first author's Harnack inequality for the Kähler-Ricc flow, and a very recent local injectivity radius estimate of Perelman for the Ricci flow.
We give a new and complete proof of Hamilton's injectivity radius estimate for sequences with bounded and almost nonnegative curvature operators, unbounded diameters, and bump-like origins. Such sequences arise in particular from dilations about a singularity of the Ricci flow on a 3-manifold.
Consider the standard action of $SO(2)\times SO(3)$ on $\mathbb{R}^5=\mathbb{R}^2\oplus \mathbb{R}^3$. We establish the existence of a uniform constant $\mathcal{C}>0$ so that any $SO(2)\times SO(3)$-invariant Ricci soliton on $\mathbb{S}^4\subset \mathbb{R}^5$ with Einstein constant $1$ must have Riemann curvature and volume bounded by $\mathcal{C}$, and injectivity radius bounded below by $\frac{1}{\mathcal{C}}$. This observation, coupled with basic numerics, gives strong evidence to suggest that the only $SO(2)\times SO(3)$-invariant Ricci solitons on $\mathbb{S}^4$ are round. We also encou…
Under the usual condition that the volume of a geodesic ball is close to the Euclidean one or the injectivity radii is bounded from below, we prove a lower bound of the $C^α W^{1, q}$ harmonic radius for manifolds with bounded Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature when the gradient of the potential is bounded. Under these conditions, the regularity that can be imposed on the metrics under harmonic coordinates is only $C^αW^{1,q}$, where $q>2n$ and $n$ is the dimension of the manifolds. This is almost 1 order lower than that in the classical $C^{1,α} W^{2, p}$ harmonic coordinates under bounded Ricci cur…
We present numerical visualizations of Ricci Flow of surfaces and 3-dimensional manifolds of revolution. Ricci_rot is an educational tool which visualizes surfaces of revolution moving under Ricci flow. That these surfaces tend to remain embedded in R3 is what makes direct visualization possible. The numerical lessons gained in developing this tool may be applicable to numerical simulation of Ricci flow of other surfaces. Similarly for simple 3-dimensional manifolds like the 3-sphere, with a metric which is invariant under the action of SO(3) with 2-sphere orbits, the metric can be represented…
We classify totally geodesic submanifolds of Damek-Ricci spaces and show that they are either homogeneous (such submanifolds are known to be "smaller" Damek-Ricci spaces) or isometric to rank-one symmetric spaces of negative curvature. As a by-product, we obtain that a totally geodesic submanifold of any known harmonic manifold is by itself harmonic. We prove that the Cayley hyperbolic plane admits no Einstein hypersurfaces and that the only Einstein hypersurfaces in the Cayley projective plane are geodesic spheres of a particular radius; this completes the classification of Einstein hypersurf…
We prove that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a conjugate radius bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. Using this we derive a number of results about structures of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounds.
In this work, using the method by He, we prove a short time existence for Ricci flow on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with the following properties: (i) there is $r_0>0$ such that the volume of any geodesic balls of radius $r\le r_0$ is close to the volume of the geodesic ball in the Euclidean space with the same radius; (ii) the Ricci curvature is bounded below; (iii) the sectional curvature is bounded below by $-Cd^2(x,x_0)$ where $d(x,x_0)$ is the distance from a fixed point. An application to the uniformization for complete noncompact Kahler manifolds with nonnegative bisection…
We present a monotonic expression for the Ricci flow, valid in all dimensions and without curvature assumptions. It is interpreted as an entropy for a certain canonical ensemble. Several geometric applications are given. In particular, (1) Ricci flow, considered on the space of riemannian metrics modulo diffeomorphism and scaling, has no nontrivial periodic orbits (that is, other than fixed points); (2) In a region, where singularity is forming in finite time, the injectivity radius is controlled by the curvature; (3) Ricci flow can not quickly turn an almost euclidean region into a very curve…
We show that the focal radius of any submanifold $N$ of positive dimension in a manifold $M$ with sectional curvature greater than or equal to $1$ does not exceed $\frac{π}{2}.$ In the case of equality, we show that $N$ is totally geodesic in $M$ and the universal cover of $M$ is isometric to a sphere or a projective space with their standard metrics, provided $N$ is closed. Our results also hold for $k^{th}$--intermediate Ricci curvature, provided the submanifold has dimension $\geq k.$ Thus in a manifold with Ricci curvature $\geq n-1,$ all hypersurfaces have focal radius $\leq \frac{π}{2},$…
In this paper we establish the existence of extremals for the Log Sobolev functional on complete non-compact manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and strictly positive injectivity radius, under a condition near infinity. When Ricci curvature is also bounded from above we get exponential decay at infinity of the extremals. As a consequence of these analytical results we establish, under the same assumptions, that non-trivial shrinking Ricci solitons support a gradient Ricci soliton structure. On the way, we prove two results of independent interest: the existence of a distance-like…
Let $π:\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}(0)\oplus \mathcal{O}(k))\to \mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ be a projective bundle over $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ with $1\leq k \leq n-1$. In this paper, we show that lens space $L(k\, ;1)(r)$ with radius $r$ embedded in $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}(0)\oplus \mathcal{O}(k))$ is a self-similar solution, where $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}(0)\oplus \mathcal{O}(k))$ is endowed with the $U(n)$-invariant gradient shrinking Ricci soliton structure. We also prove that there exists a pair of critical radii $r_{1}<r_{2}$ which satisfies the following. The lens space $L(k\, ;1)(r)$ is a self-shrinker if $…
We prove a completely new integral criterion for the existence and completeness of the wave operators $W_{\pm}(-Δ_h,-Δ_g, I_{g,h})$ corresponding to the (unique self-adjoint realizations of) the Laplace-Beltrami operators $-Δ_j$, $j=1,2$, that are induced by two quasi-isometric complete Riemannian metrics $g$ and $h$ on an open manifold $M$. In particular, this result provides a criterion for the absolutely continuous spectra of $-Δ_g$ and $-Δ_h$ to coincide. Our proof relies on estimates that are obtained using a probabilistic Bismut type formula for the gradient of a heat semigroup. Unlike a…
We show that a complete Riemannian manifold has finite topological type (i.e., homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary), provided its Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor has a positive lower bound, and either of the following conditions: (i) the Ricci curvature is bounded from above; (ii) the Ricci curvature is bounded from below and injectivity radius is bounded away from zero. Moreover, a complete shrinking Ricci soliton has finite topological type if its scalar curvature is bounded.
We investigate regularization of riemannian metrics by mollification. Assuming both-sided bounds on the Ricci tensor and a lower injectivity radius bound we obtain a uniform estimate on the change of the sectional curvature. Actually, our result holds for any metric with a uniform bound on the $W^{2,p}$-harmonic radius.
We derive a uniform bound for the total betti number of a closed manifold in terms of a Ricci curvature lower bound, a conjugate radius lower bound and a diameter upper bound. The result is based on an angle version of Toponogov comparison estimate for small triangles in a complete manifold with a Ricci curvature lower bound. We also give a uniform estimate on the generators of the fundamental group and prove a fibration theorem in this setting.
Given a closed manifold $M$ and a vector bundle $ξ$ of rank $n$ over $M$, by gluing two copies of the disc bundle of $ξ$, we can obtain a closed manifold $D(ξ, M)$, the so-called double manifold. In this paper, we firstly prove that each sphere bundle $S_r(ξ)$ of radius $r>0$ is an isoparametric hypersurface in the total space of $ξ$ equipped with a connection metric, and for $r>0$ small enough, the induced metric of $S_r(ξ)$ has positive Ricci curvature under the additional assumptions that $M$ has a metric with positive Ricci curvature and $n\geq3$. As an application, if $M$ admits a metric …
A fundamental tool in the analysis of Ricci flow is a compactness result of Hamilton in the spirit of the work of Cheeger, Gromov and others. Roughly speaking it allows one to take a sequence of Ricci flows with uniformly bounded curvature and uniformly controlled injectivity radius, and extract a subsequence that converges to a complete limiting Ricci flow. A widely quoted extension of this result allows the curvature to be bounded uniformly only in a local sense. However, in this note we give a counterexample.
We investigate the effect of the average scalar curvature on the conjugate radius, average area of the geodesic spheres, average volume of the metric balls and the total volume of a closed Riemannian manifold $N$ (or more generally $N$ with finite volume whose negative Ricci curvature integral on $SN$ is finite). For example, we prove that if the average scalar curvature is larger than the lower bound of the normalized Ricci curvature, then we can improve the Bishop-Gromov estimate on the average volume of the metric balls of any size. We also prove the monotone decreasing property of a certai…
