The properties of neutron matter are integral to the correct description of neutron stars as well as the description of neutron-rich nuclei. One key property of neutron matter is its superfluid behaviour in a range of densities relevant to the inner crust of neutron stars. This work investigates the finite-size effects in the pairing gap of a pure neutron matter superfluid system at densities found in the inner crust of cold neutron stars. The BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) treatment of superfluidity gives rise to the mean-field pairing gap while a projection after variation (PBCS Theory) can provide a beyond-mean-field pairing gap through an odd-even staggering formula. While these two pairing gap results should agree in the thermodynamic limit, in this work we demonstrate that this is the case for systems far from the thermodynamic limit as well. This is a first step towards a model-independent extraction of the pairing gap in neutron matter.
The odd-even staggering of nuclear masses was recognized in the early days of nuclear physics. Recently, a similar effect was discovered in other finite fermion systems, such as ultrasmall metallic grains and metal clusters. It is believed that the staggering in nuclei and grains is primarily due to pairing correlations (superconductivity), while in clusters it is caused by the Jahn-Teller effect. We find that, for light and medium-mass nuclei, the staggering has two components. The first one originates from pairing while the second, comparable in magnitude, has its roots in the deformed mean …
Odd-even staggering of binding energies is studied in finite fermion systems with pairing correlations. We discuss contributions of the pairing and mean-field to the staggering, and we construct the binding-energy filters which measure the magnitude of pairing correlations and the effective single-particle spacings in a given system The analysis is based on studying several exactly-solvable many-body Hamiltonians as well as on the analytical formulas that can be applied in the weak and strong pairing limits.
The odd-even mass staggering in nuclei is analyzed in the context of self-consistent mean-field calculations, for spherical as well as for deformed nuclei. For these nuclei, the respective merits of the energy differences $Δ^{(3)}$ and $Δ^{(5)}$ to extract both the pairing gap and the time-reversal symmetry breaking effect at the same time are extensively discussed. The usual mass formula $Δ^{(3)}$, is shown to contain additional mean-field contributions when realistic pairing is used in the calculation. A simple tool is proposed in order to remove time-reversal symmetry breaking effects from …
We investigate the spatial extension of weakly bound Ne and C isotopes by taking into account the pairing correlation with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method and a 3-body model, respectively. We show that the odd-even staggering in the reaction cross sections of $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{14,15,16}$C are successfully reproduced, and thus the staggering can be attributed to the pairing anti-halo effect. A correlation between a one-neutron separation energy and the anti-halo effect is demonstrated for $s$- and p-waves using the HFB wave functions.
Various properties of single-particle Hartree-Fock ground-state solutions in $N\sim Z$ nuclei are investigated. The emphasis is on a role of single-particle mean-field in odd-even mass staggering. It is shown that, unlike in traditional scenario originating from the Fermi gas or macroscopic models, the symmetry energy contribution to odd-even mass staggering is nearly cancelled by the contribution coming from the average level density. It allows to construct indicators probing both pairing as well as mean-field components to the odd-even mass staggering. The impact of the single-particle Hartr…
We have studied odd-even nuclear mass staggering with the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory by employing isoscalar and isovector contact pairing interactions. By reproducing the empirical odd-even mass differences of the Sn isotopic chain, the strengths of pairing interactions are determined. The optimal strengths adjusted in this work can give better description of odd-even mass differences than that fitted by reproducing the experimental neutron pairing gap of $^{120}$Sn.
Partial dynamical symmetry (PDS) is shown to be relevant for describing the odd-even staggering in the $γ$-band of $^{156}$Gd while retaining solvability and good SU(3) symmetry for the ground and $β$ bands. Several classes of interacting boson model Hamiltonians with SU(3) PDS are surveyed.
We explore, within the framework of an algebraic sp(4) shell model, discrete approximations to various derivatives of the energies of the lowest isovector-paired 0^+ states of atomic nuclei in the 40 <A < 100 mass range. The results show that the symplectic model can be used to successfully interpret fine structure effects driven by the proton-neutron (pn) and like-particle isovector pairing interactions as well as interactions with higher J multipolarity. A finite energy difference technique is used to investigate two-proton and two-neutron separation energies, observed irregularities found a…
A simple superfluid model with an effective four body interaction of monopole pairing type is used to explain the staggering of the charge radii in the isotope chains. The contribution of deformation and of the particle number projection are analyzed for the Sn isotopes. Good results are obtained for the staggering parameters and neutron pairing energies.
We have performed shell-model calculations of binding energies of nuclei around $^{132}$Sn. The main aim of our study has been to find out if the behavior of odd-even staggering across N=82 is explainable in terms of the shell model. In our calculations, we have employed realistic low-momentum two-body effective interactions derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential that have already proved quite successful in describing the spectroscopic properties of nuclei in the $^{132}$Sn region. Comparison shows that our results fully explains the trend of the experimental staggering.

The interaction cross sections of $^{22,23}$O nuclei at 900 MeV/nucleon have been measured recently by Kanungo {\it et al.}. We show that the odd-even staggering parameter of interaction cross sections deduced from these new data agrees well with the theoretical systematics expected for the neutron separation energy of $S_n$=2.74$\pm$0.120 MeV for $^{23}$O. We also discuss briefly the energy dependence of the staggering parameter.
We explore the systematics of odd-even mass staggering with a view to identifying the physical mechanisms responsible. The BCS pairing and mean field contributions have A- and number parity dependencies which can help disentangle the different contributions. This motivates the two-term parametrization c_1 + c_2/A as a theoretically based alternative to the inverse power form traditionally used to fit odd-even mass differences. Assuming that the A-dependence of the BCS pairing is weak, we find that mean-field contributions are dominant below mass number A~40 while BCS pairing dominates in heavi…
In this work, new recursion relations for the number of spin-J states for identical particles in a single-j shell are presented. Such relations are obtained using the generating-function technique, which enables one to exhibit an odd-even staggering in the spin distribution of an even number of fermions in a single-j shell: the number of states with an even value of J is larger than the number of states with an odd value of J. An analytical expression of the excess of states with an even value of J is provided, and its asymptotic behavior for large values of j is discussed.
We have done systematic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations in coordinate space on the one-quasi-particle energies and binding energy odd-even staggering (OES) in semi-magic nuclei with the zero-range volume, mixed and surface pairing forces in order to explore the influence of their density dependence. The odd-$N$ isotopes are calculated within the blocking scheme. The strengths for the pairing forces are determined in two schemes by fitting locally to reproduce pairing gap in $^{120}$Sn and globally to all available data on the OES of semi-magic nuclei with $Z\geq8$. In the former calculati…
We discuss the role of pairing anti-halo effect in the observed odd-even staggering in reaction cross sections for $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{36,37,38}$Mg isotopes by taking into account the ground state deformation of these nuclei. To this end, we construct the ground state density for the $^{30,31}$Ne and $^{36,37}$Mg nuclei based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential, while for the $^{32}$Ne and $^{38}$Mg nuclei we also take into account the pairing correlation using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. We demonstrate that, when the one-neutron separation energy is small for the odd-mass nuclei, a…
It is proposed that the odd-even staggering (OES) in the $γ$- bands of heavy deformed nuclei can be reasonably characterized by a discrete approximation of the fourth derivative of the odd-even energy difference as a function of angular momentum $L$. This quantity exhibits a well developed staggering pattern (zigzagging behavior with alternating signs) in rare earth nuclei and actinides with long $γ$- bands ($L\geq 10$). It is shown that the OES can be interpreted reasonably as the result of the interaction of the $γ$ band with the ground band in the framework of a Vector Boson Model with SU(3…
The fragmentation of thermalized sources is studied using a version of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model which employs state densities that take the pairing gap in the nuclear levels into account. Attention is focused on the properties of the charge distributions observed in the breakup of the source. Since the microcanonical version of the model used in this study provides the primary fragment excitation energy distribution, one may correlate the reduction of the odd-even staggering in the charge distribution with the increasing occupation of high energy states. Thus, in the frame- wor…
The self-consistent continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated with Green's function technique in the coordinate space is developed to investigate odd-$A$ nuclei by incorporating the blocking effect. In a calculation performed with the SLy4 parameter for the neutron-rich Mg isotopes with $A=36-42$ around the neutron shell closure N=28, the odd-even staggering in the neutron rms radius, i.e., a larger value in $^{39}$Mg than those in $^{38}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg, is found. The large neutron radius in $^{39}$Mg is due to the blocking effect on the pair correlation energy, for which th…
We examine the general nature of nuclear odd-even mass differences by employing neutron and proton mass relations that emphasize these effects. The most recent mass tables are used. The possibility of a neutron excess dependence of the staggering is examined in detail in separate regions defined by the main nuclear shells, and a clear change in this dependency is found at $Z=50$ for both neutrons and protons. A further separation into odd and even neutron (proton) number produces very accurate local descriptions of the mass differences for each type of nucleons. These odd-even effects are comb…

We investigate the odd-even staggering (OES) in reaction cross sections of weakly bound nuclei with a Glauber theory, taking into account the pairing correlation with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method. We first discuss the pairing gap in extremely weakly bound nuclei and show that the pairing gap persists in the limit of zero separation energy limit even for single-particle orbits with the orbital angular momenta $l=0$ and $l=1$. We then introduce the OES parameter defined as the second derivative of reaction cross sections with respect to the mass number, and clarify the relation betwe…
The existing nuclear masses formula and nuclear masses model has undoubtedly achieved very good results, but it is still not satisfactory for some nuclear masses. Although there are many studies in Odd-Even staggering (OES) of nuclear masses, but the research on nuclear masses by using the systematicness of OES is indeed very few. Our purpose in this paper is to describe an empirical formula for Odd-Even staggering of nuclear masses that can be useful in describing and predicting nuclear masses. We empirically obtained the formula of odd-Z (odd-N) nuclei and even-Z (even-N) nuclei based on stu…
The odd-even staggerings (OES) on nuclear binding energies are studied systematically within the covariant density functional (CDF) theories, specifically the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) and the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theories. Taking the finite-range Gogny force D1S as an effective pairing interaction, both CDF models can provide appropriate descriptions on the OESs of nuclear binding energies for C, O, Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn, Ce, Gd and Pb isotopes as well as for N=50 and 82 isotones. However, due to the inconsistence between the non-relativistic pairing interaction an…
It was recently suggested that the odd-even staggering of reaction cross sections is an evidence of the pair- ing anti-halo effect on projectile radii. We define the dimensionless staggering parameters, Γrds and ΓR, for projectile radii and reaction cross sections, respectively, and analyze the relation between Γrds and ΓR for the scattering of 14,15,16C from a 12C target at 83 MeV/A by taking account of projectile-breakup and nuclear- medium effects newly with the microscopic version of the continuum discretized coupled-channels method. The value of ΓR is deviated from that of Γrds by the pro…
The trends with mass number are examined for the odd-even-staggering (OES) in nuclear binding of neutrons and protons through the conventional measures $Δ^{(3)}$. The large differences previously observed between these trends for even and odd values of these measures is found to arise, in part, from the slow variation of binding energies with mass and charge which provides a background contribution. This background is estimated with the liquid-drop model, and accounts for the greater difference found in proton removal relative to neutron removal. The differences which persist after backgrounds…
``Beat'' patterns are shown to appear in the octupole bands of several actinides and rare earths, their appearance being independent from the formula used in order to isolate and demonstrate them. It is shown that the recent formalism, making use of discrete approximations to derivatives of the transition energies (or of the energy levels) gives results consistent with the traditional formulae. In both regions it is seen that the first vanishing of the staggering occurs at higher values of the angular momentum I in nuclei exhibiting higher staggering at low I. Since these nuclei happen to be g…
We propose a collective Hamiltonian which incorporates the standard quadrupole terms, octupole terms classified according to the irreducible representations of the octahedron group, a quadrupole-octupole interaction, as well as a term for the bandhead energy linear in K (the projection of angular momentum on the body-fixed z-axis). The energy is subsequently minimized with respect to K for each given value of the angular momentum I, resulting in K values increasing with I within each band, even in the case in which K is restricted to a set of microscopically plausible values. We demonstrate th…
Superfluidity in the cold atomic two-species Fermi gas system in the unitary limit of infinite scattering length remains incompletely understood. In particular, a pseudogap phase has been proposed to exist above the superfluid critical temperature. Here we apply the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method to perform the first ab initio calculations of the temperature dependence of three quantities -- the energy-staggering pairing gap, the condensate fraction and the heat capacity -- in a trapped finite-size cold atom system. As the calculations of the energy-staggering pairing gap require t…
Systematic odd-even binding energy differences in finite metallic particles are usually attributed to mean-field orbital energy effects or to a coherent pairing interaction. We show analytically and numerically that a purely random two-body Hamiltonian can also give rise to an odd-even staggering. We explore the characteristics of this chaotic mechanism and discuss distinguishing features with respect to the other causes of staggering. In particular, randomness-induced staggering is found to be a smooth function of particle number, and the mechanism is seen to be largely insensitive to the pre…
It is noted that the staggering parameters used to describe even-odd effects for isotope shifts can in some cases exhibit very rapidly varying behavior as a function of neutron number. On the other hand a three parameter formula (3P) with fixed coefficients can explain the same behaviour.
The FRS-ESR facility at GSI provides unique conditions for precision measurements of large areas on the nuclear mass surface in a single experiment. Values for masses of 604 neutron-deficient nuclides (30<=Z<=92) were obtained with a typical uncertainty of 30 microunits. The masses of 114 nuclides were determined for the first time. The odd-even staggering (OES) of nuclear masses was systematically investigated for isotopic chains between the proton shell closures at Z=50 and Z=82. The results were compared with predictions of modern nuclear models. The comparison revealed that the measured tr…
The phenomenological adjustment of the nuclear pairing strength is usually performed with respect to the odd-even staggering of the binding energies. We find that the results strongly depend on the way in which the ground states of the odd nuclei are computed. A thorough calculation including all time-even and time-odd polarisation effects induced by the odd nucleon produces about 30% reduced odd-even staggering as compared to the standard spherical calculations in the relativistic mean-field model. The pairing strength must be enhanced by about 20% to compensate for that effect. The enhanced …
A unified theoretical model reproducing charge radii of known atomic nuclei plays an essential role in making extrapolations for unknown nuclei. Recently developed new ansatz which phenomenologically takes into account the neutron-proton short-range correlations ($np$-SRCs) can describe the discontinuity properties and odd-even staggering (OES) effect of charge radii along isotopic chains remarkably well. In this work, we further review the modified root-mean-square (rms) charge radii formula in the framework of relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. The charge radii are calculated along variou…
The mean-square charge radii of $^{207,208}$Hg ($Z=80, N=127,128$) have been studied for the first time and those of $^{202,203,206}$Hg ($N=122,123,126$) remeasured by the application of in-source resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE (CERN). The characteristic \textit{kink} in the charge radii at the $N=126$ neutron shell closure has been revealed, providing the first information on its behavior below the $Z=82$ proton shell closure. A theoretical analysis has been performed within relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov and non-relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approaches, considering…
The BCS and HFB theories which can accommodate the pairing correlations in the ground states of atomic nuclei are presented. As an application of the pairing theories, we investigate the spatial extension of weakly bound Ne and C isotopes by taking into account the pairing correlation with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method and a 3-body model, respectively. We show that the odd-even staggering in the reaction cross sections of $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{14,15,16}$C are successfully reproduced, and thus the staggering can be attributed to the unique role of pairing correlations in nuclei far …
In this paper, we present some results of a particle-rotor model study of 176Lu. In particular, we consider the two lowest K=1+ balds, which present a rather large odd-even staggering. This effect, which may be traced to direct Coriolis coupling with Newby-shifted K=0+ bands, is of great interest since it gives information on the proton-neutron interaction. We use both zero-range and finite-range interactions with particular attention focused on the role of the tensor force. Comparison of the calculated results with experimental data evidences the importance of the tensor-force effects in the …
In this work we theoretically study pairing in two-dimensional Fermi gases, a system which is experimentally accessible using cold atoms. We start by deriving the mean-field pairing gap equation for a coordinate-space potential with a finite interaction range, and proceed to solve this numerically. We find that for sufficiently short effective ranges the answer is identical to the zero-range one. We then use Diffusion Monte Carlo to evaluate the total energy for many distinct particle numbers; we employ several variational parameters to produce a good ground-state energy and then use these res…
We implement a high order discrete derivative analysis of the low lying collective energies of even-even nuclei with respect to the total number of valence nucleon pairs N in the framework of F- spin multiplets appearing in a symplectic sp(4,R) classification scheme. We find that for the nuclei of any given F- multiplet the respective experimental energies exhibit a Delta N=2 staggering behavior and for the nuclei of two united neighboring F- multiplets well pronounced Delta N=1 staggering patterns are observed. Those effects have been reproduced successfully through a generalized sp(4,R) mode…
Two fits of the pairing residual interaction in the rare-earth region are independently performed. One is made on the odd-even staggering of masses by comparing measured and explicitly calculated three-point binding-energy differences centered on odd-even nuclei. Another deals with the moments of inertia of the first 2+ states of well deformed even-even nuclei upon comparing experimental data with the results of Inglis-Belyaev moments (supplemented by a crude estimate of the so-called Thouless-Valatin corrections). The sample includes 24 even-even and 31 odd-mass nuclei selected according to t…
The mesoscopic nature of the atomic nucleus gives rise to a wide array of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. The size of the nucleus is a window into this duality: while the charge radii globally scale as $A^{1/3}$, their evolution across isotopic chains reveals unanticipated structural phenomena [1-3]. The most ubiquitous of these is perhaps the Odd-Even Staggering (OES) [4]: isotopes with an odd number of neutrons are usually smaller in size than the trend of their even-neutron neighbours suggests. This OES effect varies with the number of protons and neutrons and poses a significant cha…
The foundation of the local energy-density functional method to describe the nuclear ground-state properties is given. The method is used to investigate differential observables such as the odd-even mass differences and odd-even effects in charge radii. For a few isotope chains of spherical nuclei, the calculations are performed with an exact treatment of the Gor'kov equations in the coordinate-space representation. A zero-range cutoff density-dependent pairing interaction with a density-gradient term is used. The evolution of charge radii and nucleon separation energies is reproduced reasonab…
The positive-parity states of even-even Xe nuclei are investigated within the framework of modified O(6) limit of the interacting boson model (IBM1). The effective three-body interaction [QQQ] where Q is the IBM O(6) quadrupole operator is introduced to exhibit the triaxiality nature. The shape of nuclear surface is described by the deformation parameters beta, gamma by using the intrinsic coherent state. The potential energy surfaces (PES) of the transition U(5)-Triaxiality-O(6) are calculated and analyzed and the critical phase transition points are identified. For each nucleus a fitting pro…
We present the mass excesses of 52-57Sc, obtained from recent time-of-flight nuclear mass measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The masses of 56Sc and 57Sc were determined for the first time with atomic mass excesses of -24.85(59)(+0 -54) MeV and -21.0(1.3) MeV, respectively, where the asymmetric uncertainty for 56Sc was included due to possible contamination from a long-lived isomer. The 56Sc mass indicates a small odd-even mass staggering in the A = 56 mass-chain towards the neutron drip line, significantly deviating from trends predi…
A systematic study of $γ$-bands observed in atomic nuclei is performed using the triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. The staggering phase between the even and odd spin members of the $γ$-band for most the nuclei investigated in the present work is found to have even-I-below-odd-I, which in the framework of the collective model is considered as a signature of $γ$-softness. It is observed that out of twenty-three systems studied, only four nuclei, namely, $^{76}$Ge, $^{112}$Ru, $^{170}$Er and $^{232}$Th depict staggering phase with odd-I-below-even-I, which is regarded as an indicati…
In the two-component Fermi gas with a contact interaction, a pseudogap regime can exist at temperatures between the superfluid critical temperature $T_c$ and a temperature $T^* > T_c$. This regime is characterized by pairing correlations without superfluidity. However, in the unitary limit of infinite scattering length, the existence of this regime is still debated. To help address this, we have applied finite-temperature auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFMC) to study the thermodynamics of the superfluid phase transition and signatures of the pseudogap in the spin-balanced homogeneous uni…
The odd-even mass staggering (OES) of nuclei is analyzed in the context of self-consistent mean-field calculations. The procedure developed allows to understand the OES for spherical as well as for deformed nuclei. Comparison with results at the Hartree-Fock level shows the non-perturbative effect on this observable of the inclusion of pairing correlations.
The effective isospin-density dependent pairing interaction (P1) [S. S. Zhang, U. Lombardo and E. G. Zhao, Sci. Chin. Phys. Mech. Astro. {\bf 54}, 236 (2011)] extracted from neutron pairing gaps for $^1$S$_0$ in asymmetric nuclear matter calculations [S. S. Zhang, L. G. Cao, U. Lombardo, et al. Phys. Rev. C {\bf 81}, 044313 (2010)] is employed to study the bulk properties of Ca, Ni, Zr and Sn isotopes. The odd-even mass (OEM) staggering is calculated by the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS method (SHF + BCS) with the SkP interaction. For comparison, we study two other types of isovector effective …
Neutron-deficient $^{177-185}$Hg isotopes were studied using in-source laser resonance-ionization spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam facility, in an experiment combining different detection methods tailored to the studied isotopes. These include either alpha-decay tagging or Multi-reflection Time-of-Flight gating to identify the isotopes of interest. The endpoint of the odd-even nuclear shape staggering in mercury was observed directly by measuring for the first time the isotope shifts and hyperfine structures of $^{177-180}$Hg. Changes in the mean-square charge radii for all…
First, we briefly outline some aspects of the starting project to design non-empirical energy functionals based on low-momentum vacuum interactions and many-body perturbation theory. Second, we present results obtained within an approximation of such a scheme where the pairing part of the energy density functional is constructed at first order in the nuclear plus Coulomb two-body interaction. We discuss in detail the physics of the odd-even mass staggering and the necessity to compute actual odd-even mass differences to analyze it meaningfully.
From the experimental data on odd-even staggering of masses, we have shown that variation of pairing as a function of neutron number plays an important role in many distinctive features like occurrence of new shell closures, shell erosion, anomalous reduction of the energy of the first 2+ state and slower increase in the B(E2, 2_{+}^{1} \rightarrow 0_{+}^{1}) in the neutron-rich even-even nuclei in different mass regions. New predictions have been made in a model independent way. Results of theoretical calculations support the phenomenological findings.
This work aims at a global assessment of the effect of the density dependence of the zero-range pairing interaction. Systematic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with the volume, surface and mixed pairing forces are carried out to study the pairing gaps in even-even nuclei over the whole nuclear chart. Calculations are also done in coordinate representation for unstable semi-magic even-even nuclei. The calculated pairing gaps are compared with empirical values from four different odd-even staggering formulae. Calculations with the three pairing interactions are comparable for most nu…
We perform Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations for semi-magic Calcium, Nickel, Tin and Lead isotopes and $N$=20, 28, 50 and 82 isotones using density-dependent pairing interactions recently derived from a microscopic nucleon-nucleon interaction. These interactions have an isovector component so that the pairing gaps in symmetric and neutron matter are reproduced. Our calculations well account for the experimental data for the neutron number dependence of binding energy, two neutrons separation energy, and odd-even mass staggering of these isotopes. This result suggests that by introduci…
Charge radii of Sn, Ba, Yb, and Pb isotopes are calculated within Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with a Skyrme force and a density-dependent delta-force pairing. We investigate mean field effects of the pairing upon odd-even staggering of isotope shifts. HFB equations are solved in the canonical basis. Odd nuclei are treated in the blocking approximation.
