We propose theoretically a reconfigurable two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal sonic crystal with higher-order topology protected by the six-fold, $C_6$, rotation symmetry. The acoustic band gap and band topology can be controlled by rotating the triangular scatterers in each unit-cell. In the nontrivial phase, the sonic crystal realizes the topological spin Hall effect in a higher-order fashion: (i) The edge states emerging in the bulk band gap exhibits partial spin-momentum locking and are gapped due to the reduced spatial symmetry at the edges. (ii) The gapped edge states, on the other hand, stabilize the topological corner states emerging in the edge band gap. The partial spin-momentum locking is manifested as pseudo-spin-polarization of edge states away from the time-reversal invariant momenta, where the pseudospin is emulated by the acoustic orbital angular momentum. We reveal the underlying topological mechanism using a corner topological index based on the symmetry representation of the acoustic Bloch bands.
We show that there is a fundamental difference between spin Hall current and orbital angular momentum Hall current in Rashba- Dresselhaus spin orbit coupling systems. The orbital angular momentum Hall current has a pure topological contribution which is originated from the existence of magnetic flux in momentum space while there is no such topological nature for the spin Hall current. Moreover, we show that the orbital Hall conductance is always larger than the spin Hall conductance in the presence of both couplings. The topological part is expected to be free from the effect of disorder due t…
The superposition of topological phonons and flexoelectronic charge separation in an inhomogeneously strain Si give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonons. The topological electronic magnetism of phonons is also expected to give rise to stationary spin current or spin superfluidity. In this experimental study, we present possible evidence of spin superfluidity in an inhomogeneously strained p-Si thin films samples. The spin superfluidity is uncovered using non-local resistance measurement. A resonance behavior is observed in a non-local resistance measurement at 10 kHz and between…
The intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) originates from the topology of the Bloch bands in momentum space. The duality between real space and momentum space calls for a spin Hall effect induced from a real space topology in analogy to the topological Hall effect (THE) of skyrmions. We theoretically demonstrate the topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) in which a pure transverse spin current is generated from a skyrmion spin texture.
We show how the snowflake phononic crystal structure, which has been realized experimentally recently, can be turned into a topological insulator for sound waves. This idea, based purely on simple geometrical modifications, could be readily implemented on the nanoscale.
Recently, we witnessed a tremendous effort to conquer the realm of acoustics as a possible playground to test with sound waves topologically protected wave propagation. Acoustics differ substantially from photonic and electronic systems since longitudinal sound waves lack intrinsic spin polarization and breaking the time-reversal symmetry requires additional complexities that both are essential in mimicking the quantum effects leading to topologically robust sound propagation. In this article, we review the latest efforts to explore with sound waves topological states of quantum matter in two-…
The chirality associated with broken time reversal symmetry in magnetically doped topological insulators has important implications to the quantum transport phenomena. Here we report the anomalous Hall effect studies in Mn- and Cr-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulators with varied thickness and doping content. By tracing the chirality of the Hall loops, we find that the Mn-type anomalous Hall effect with clockwise chirality is strengthened by the reduction of film thickness, which is opposite to that of the Cr-type anomalous Hall effect with counterclockwise chirality. We provide a phenomen…
Topological insulators are currently of considerable interest due to peculiar electronic properties originating from helical states on their surfaces. Here we demonstrate that the sound excited by helical particles on surfaces of topological insulators has several exotic properties fundamentally different from sound propagating in non-helical or even isotropic helical systems. Specifically, the sound may have strictly forward propagation absent for isotropic helical states. Its dependence on the anisotropy of the realistic surface-states is of distinguished behavior which may be used as an alt…
By breaking the time-reversal-symmetry in three-dimensional topological insulators with introduction of spontaneous magnetization or application of magnetic field, the surface states become gapped, leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect or quantum Hall effect, when the chemical potential locates inside the gap. Further breaking of inversion symmetry is possible by employing magnetic topological insulator heterostructures that host nondegenerate top and bottom surface states. Here, we demonstrate the tailored-material approach for the realization of robust quantum Hall states in the bilayer s…
The phenomenological theory for "topological" Hall effect (THE) is proposed. The theory can be used for qualitative analysis of THE in the medium with arbitrary magnetization distribution. In the paper the cylindrical particle with "vortex" magnetization is considered. The hysteresis loop of THE is qualitatively different comparing to abnormal Hall effect. The estimation of THE magnitude in the "vortex" particle is made. For Co particle with 100 nm diameter the THE exceeds normal and abnormal Hall effects until an external magnetic field less than 200 Oe.
We report transport studies of Mn-doped Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) films with accurately controlled thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that films thicker than 5 quintuple-layer (QL) exhibit the usual anomalous Hall effect for magnetic TIs. When the thickness is reduced to 4 QL, however, characteristic features associated with the topological Hall effect (THE) emerge. More surprisingly, the THE vanishes again when the film thickness is further reduced to 3 QL. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the coupling between the top and bottom surface states at the dimension…
We used micromagnetic simulations to investigate the spatial distributions of the effective magnetic fields induced by spin chirality in crossed nanowires with three characteristic magnetic structures: a radiated-shape, an antivortex, and a uniform-like states. Our results indicate that, unlike the anomalous Hall effect, the topological Hall effect (which is related to the spin chirality) depends on both the polarity and the vorticity. Therefore, measuring the topological Hall effect can detect both the polarity and the vorticity simultaneously in crossed nanowires. This approach may be suitab…
The recent synthesis of two-dimensional staggered materials opens up burgeoning opportunities to study optical spin-orbit interactions in semiconducting Dirac-like systems. We unveil topological phase transitions in the photonic spin Hall effect in the graphene family materials. It is shown that an external static electric field and a high frequency circularly polarized laser allow for active on-demand manipulation of electromagnetic beam shifts. The spin Hall effect of light presents a rich dependence with radiation degrees of freedom, material properties, and features non-trivial topological…
The absorption of bulk acoustic phonons in a two-dimensional (2D) GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is studied (in the clean limit) where the 2D electron-gas (2DEG), being in an odd-integer quantum-Hall state, is in fact a spin dielectric. Of the two channels of phonon absorption associated with excitation of spin waves, one, which is due to the spin-orbit (SO) coupling of electrons, involves a change of the spin state of the system and the other does not. We show that the phonon-absorption rate corresponding to the former channel (in the paper designated as the second absorption channel) is finite …
The quantum Hall effect is usually observed in 2D systems. We show that the Fermi arcs can give rise to a distinctive 3D quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals. Because of the topological constraint, the Fermi arc at a single surface has an open Fermi surface, which cannot host the quantum Hall effect. Via a "wormhole" tunneling assisted by the Weyl nodes, the Fermi arcs at opposite surfaces can form a complete Fermi loop and support the quantum Hall effect. The edge states of the Fermi arcs show a unique 3D distribution, giving an example of (d-2)-dimensional boundary states. This is d…
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
We engineer quantum anomalous Hall effect in silicene via doping 3d transition metals. We show that there exists a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect in Vanadium doped silicene using both analytical model and Wannier interpolation. We also predict the quantum valley Hall effect and electrically tunable topological states could be realized in certain transition metal doped silicene where the energy band inversion occurs. Our finding provides new scheme for the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect and platform for electrically controllable topological states.

An electric charge near the surface of a topological insulator induces an image magnetic monopole. Here, we show that if the topological insulator surface has a negative curvature, namely in the case of a semispherical cavity, the induced Hall current reverses its rotation as the electric charge crosses the semisphere geometric focus. Such a reversion is shown to be equivalent of inverting the charge of the image magnetic monopole. We also discuss upon the case of a semicylindrical cavity, where Hall current reversion appears to be feasible of probing in realistic experiments.
The quantum magnetotransport properties of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide are derived using linear response theory. Especially, the effect of topological terms on longitudinal and Hall conductivity is analyzed. The Hall conductivity exhibits fractional steps in the integer quantum Hall regime. Further complete spin and valley polarization of the longitudinal conductivity is seen in presence of these topological terms. Finally, the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are suppressed or enhanced contingent on the sign of these topological terms.
The absorption coefficient for surface acoustic waves in a piezoelectric insulator in contact with a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure (with two-dimensional electron mobility $μ= 1.3\times 10^5 cm^2/V\cdot s)$ at T=4.2K) via a small gap has been investigated experimentally as a function of the frequency of the wave, the width of the vacuum gap, the magnetic field, and the temperature. The magnetic field and frequency dependencies of the high-frequency conductivity (in the region 30-210 MHz) are calculated and analyzed. The experimental results can be explained if it assumed that there exists a fluct…
In topological insulators, spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry combine to form a novel state of matter predicted to have exotic physical properties.
Based on a combination of $k \cdot p$ theory, band topology analysis and electronic structure calculations, we predict the (111) thin films of the SnTe class of three-dimensional (3D) topological crystalline insulators realize the quantum spin Hall phase in a wide range of thickness. The nontrivial topology originates from the inter-surface coupling of the topological surface states of TCI in the 3D limit. The inter-surface coupling changes sign and gives rise to topological phase transitions as a function of film thickness. Furthermore, this coupling can be strongly affected by an external el…
We report a new class of large-gap quantum spin Hall insulators in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, namely, MX$_2$ with M=(Mo, W) and X=(S, Se, and Te), whose topological electronic properties are highly tunable by external electric field. We propose a novel topological field effect transistor made of these atomic layer materials and their van der Waals heterostructures. Our device exhibits parametrically enhanced charge-spin conductance through topologically protected transport channels, and can be rapidly switched off by electric field through topological phase transition in…
Valley pseudospin, labeling quantum states of energy extrema in momentum space, is attracting tremendous attention1-13 because of its potential in constructing new carrier of information. Compared with the non-topological bulk valley transport realized soon after predictions1-5, the topological valley transport in domain walls6-13 is extremely challenging owing to the inter-valley scattering inevitably induced by atomic scale imperfectness, until the recent electronic signature observed in bilayer graphene12,13. Here we report the first experimental observation of topological valley transport …
We carry out a throughout study of the topological Hall and topological spin Hall effects in disordered skyrmionic systems: the dimensionless (spin) Hall angles are evaluated across the energy band structure in the multiprobe Landauer-Büttiker formalism and their link to the effective magnetic field emerging from the real space topology of the spin texture is highlighted. We discuss these results for an optimal skyrmion size and for various sizes of the sample and found that the adiabatic approximation still holds for large skyrmions as well as for few atomic size-nanoskyrmions. Finally, we te…
The magneto-transport and magnetization measurements of Sb1.90Cu0.10Te3 were performed at different temperatures and different fields. Magneto-transport measurement at high field indicates the coexistence of both bulk and surface states. The magnetization shows the induced antiferromagnetic ordering with Cu doping and the observed quantum oscillation in it indicates that magnetization in Sb1.90Cu0.10Te3 is the bulk property. The non linearity in Hall data suggests the existence of anomalous and topological Hall effect. The anomalous and topological Hall effect (THE) from measured hall data of …
We propose an unconventional type of Hall effect in a topological Dirac semimetal with ferromagnetic electrodes. The topological Dirac semimetal itself has time-reversal symmetry, whereas attached ferromagnetic electrodes break it, causing the large Hall response. This induced Hall effect is a characteristic of the helical surface/edge states that arise in topological materials, such as topological Dirac semimetals or quantum spin Hall insulators. We compute the Hall conductance/resistance and the Hall angle by using a lattice model with four-terminal geometry. For topological Dirac semimetals…
We use magnetotransport in dual-gated magnetic topological insulator heterostructures to map out a phase diagram of the topological Hall and quantum anomalous Hall effects as a function of the chemical potential (primarily determined by the back gate voltage) and the asymmetric potential (primarily determined by the top gate voltage). A theoretical model that includes both surface states and valence band quantum well states allows the evaluation of the variation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and carrier density with gate voltages. The qualitative agreement between experiment and the…
Photonic topological systems, the electromagnetic analog of the topological materials in condensed matter physics, create many opportunities to design optical devices with novel properties. We present an experimental realization of the bi-anisotropic meta waveguide photonic system replicating both quantum Hall (QH) and quantum spin-Hall (QSH) topological insulating phases. With careful design, a composite QH-QSH photonic topological material is created and experimentally shown to support reflection-free edgemodes, a heterogeneous topological structure that is unprecedented in condensed matter …
Hall viscosity is a dissipationless transport coefficient whose value is quantized in units of the density in some topological phases and may be used as a measure of topological order. I give an overview of the Hall viscosity, its relation to Hall conductivity in Galilean invariant theories and its realization in effective theories.
Two kinds of topological excitations, vortices and skyrmions, are studied in the frame of Ginzburg-Landau theory. We obtain the rigorous relation between the topological excitation and the order parameters in the fractional quantum Hall systems. We also discuss the evolution of the vortices in fractional quantum Hall systems.
We have investigated the topological Hall effect (THE) in MnGa/Pt and MnGa/Ta bilayers induced by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The most evident THE signals have been found based on the MnGa films with small critical DMI energy constant Dc. The large topological portion of the Hall signal from the total Hall signal has been extracted in the whole temperature range from 5 to 300 K. These results open up the exploration of the DMI induced magnetic behavior based on the bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy materials for fundamental physics and magnetic storage technologie…
Topological states of matter are particularly robust, since they exploit global features insensitive to local perturbations. In this work, we describe how to create a Chern insulator of phonons in the solid state. The proposed implementation is based on a simple setting, a dielectric slab with a suitable pattern of holes. Its topological properties can be wholly tuned in-situ by adjusting the amplitude and frequency of a driving laser that controls the optomechanical interaction between light and sound. The resulting chiral, topologically protected phonon transport along the edges can be probe…
Topological phases have spurred unprecedented abilities for sound, light and matter engineering and recent progress has shown how waves not only confine at the interfaces between topologically distinct insulators, but in the form of zero-dimensional non-propagating states bound to defects or corners. Majorana-like bound states have recently been observed in man-made Kekulé textured lattices. We show here how the acoustic version of the associated Jackiw-Rossi vortex embodies a Thouless pumping process, in which the spectral flow of corner states adiabatically merge with the said Majorana-like …
We study responses to metric perturbation in topological insulator models. In this paper we introduce a novel quantity, Hall viscosity to particle density ratio, which is analogous to the viscosity to entropy ratio suggested by AdS/CFT correspondence. This quantity corresponds to the filling fraction which characterizes the quantum Hall states, and hence it could be discussed in Haldane's zero-field quantum Hall system. We also consider dissipationless viscosity in the time reversal invariant quantum spin Hall system, which is related to a spin current.
It is widely accepted that topological quantities are useful to describe quantum liquids in low dimensions. The (spin) Hall conductances are typical examples. They are expressed by the Chern numbers, which are topological invariants given by the Berry connections of the ground states. We present a topological description for the (spin) Hall conductances on a discretized Brillouin Zone. At the same time, it is quite efficient in practical numerical calculations for concrete models. We demonstrate its validity in a model with quantum phase transitions. Topological changes supplemented with the t…
Electron transport coupled with magnetism has attracted attention over the years as exemplified in anomalous Hall effect due to a Berry phase in momentum space. Another type of unconventional Hall effect -- topological Hall effect, originating from the real-space Berry phase, has recently become of great importance in the context of magnetic skyrmions. We have observed topological Hall effect in bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ and paramagnetic SrIrO$_3$ over a wide region of both temperature and magnetic field. The topological term rapidly decreases with the thickness of SrRuO$_…
Geometric Berry phase can be induced either by spin-orbit coupling, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic materials, or by chiral spin texture, such as skyrmions, leading to the topological Hall effect. Recent experiments have revealed that both phenomena can occur in topological insulator films with magnetic doping, thus providing us with an intriguing platform to study the interplay between these two phenomena. In this work, we numerically study the anomalous Hall and topological Hall effects in a four-band model that can properly describe the quantum well states in the m…
We investigate the role of quantum fluctuations in topological quantum phase transitions of quantum spin Hall insulators and quantum anomalous Hall insulators. Employing the variational cluster approximation to obtain the single-particle Green's function of the interacting many-body system, we characterize different phases by direct calculation of the recently proposed topological order parameter for interacting systems. We pinpoint the influence of quantum fluctuations on the quantum spin Hall to Mott insulator transition in several models. Furthermore, we propose a general mechanism by which…
We provide a topological understanding on phonon Hall effect in dielectrics with Raman spinphonon coupling. A general expression for phonon Hall conductivity is obtained in terms of the Berry curvature of band structures. We find a nonmonotonic behavior of phonon Hall conductivity as a function of magnetic field. Moreover, we observe a phase transition in phonon Hall effect, which corresponds to the sudden change of band topology, characterized by the altering of integer Chern numbers. This can be explained by touching and splitting of phonon bands.
We experimentally demonstrate topological edge states arising from the valley-Hall effect in twodimensional honeycomb photonic lattices with broken inversion symmetry. We break inversion symmetry by detuning the refractive indices of the two honeycomb sublattices, giving rise to a boron nitride-like band structure. The edge states therefore exist along the domain walls between regions of opposite valley Chern numbers. We probe both the armchair and zig-zag domain walls and show that the former become gapped for any detuning, whereas the latter remain ungapped until a cutoff is reached. The val…
The object of the present work is to study the quantum Hall effect through its symmetries and topological aspects. We consider the model of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of applied in-plain electric field and perpendicular magnetic field. We refer to this as the two dimensional electric-magnetic Bloch problem (EMB). The Hall conductivity quatizations beyond the linear response approximation is analyzed.
Nonlinear anomalous Hall effect is the Berry curvature dipole induced second-order Hall voltage or temperature difference in response to a longitudinal electric field or temperature gradient. These are the prominent Hall responses in time reversal symmetric systems. Here, we investigate the family of second-order nonlinear anomalous Hall effects, the electrical, thermoelectric and thermal nonlinear Hall effects in the moiré system of twisted double bilayer graphene. We demonstrate that the nonlinear anomalous Hall signals can be used to probe the topological phase-transitions in moiré systems,…
The original motivation of great interest to topological insulators was the hope to observe the quantum spin Hall effect. Therefore if a material is in the topological insulator state they frequently call it the quantum spin Hall state. However, despite impressive experimental results confirming the existence of the quantum spin Hall state, the quantum spin Hall effect has not yet been detected. After a short overview of what was originally suggested as the quantum spin Hall effect (quantum spin conductance determined by the topological Chern number) the paper analyzes the crucial role of the …
The unique conduction properties of condensed matter systems with topological order have recently inspired a quest for similar effects in classical wave phenomena. Acoustic topological insulators, in particular, hold the promise to revolutionize our ability to control sound, allowing for large isolation in the bulk and broadband one-way transport on their edges, with topological immunity against structural defects and disorder. So far these fascinating properties have been obtained relying on moving media, which inherently introduce noise and absorption losses, hindering the practical applicab…
We study anisotropic lattice strips in the presence of a magnetic field in the quantum Hall effect regime. At specific magnetic fields, causing resonant Umklapp scattering, the system is gapped in the bulk and supports chiral edge states in close analogy to topological insulators. These gaps result in plateaus for the Hall conductivity exactly at the known fillings n/m (both positive integers and m odd) for the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect. For double strips we find topological phase transitions with phases that support midgap edge states with flat dispersion. The topological eff…
The discovery of topological states of matter has profoundly augmented our understanding of phase transitions in physical systems. Instead of local order parameters, topological phases are described by global topological invariants and are therefore robust against perturbations. A prominent example thereof is the two-dimensional integer quantum Hall effect. It is characterized by the first Chern number which manifests in the quantized Hall response induced by an external electric field. Generalizing the quantum Hall effect to four-dimensional systems leads to the appearance of a novel non-line…
We investigate the topological phase derived by time-reversal breaking fields in a nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected two-dimensional Dirac semimetal. When the nonsymmorphic symmetry is preserved even in the presence of the field, the two-dimensional electronic states change into two distinct topological phases with the insulating gap. One phase is well-known as quantum Hall states with chiral edge modes accompanying the Hall current, but the other one is an unconventional topological phase with helical edge modes in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.
Skyrmions with the topological number $Q$ equal an integer larger than 1 are called high-topological-number skyrmions or high-$Q$ skyrmions. In this work, we theoretically study the topological Hall effect in square-lattice high-$Q$ skyrmion crystals (SkX) with $Q=2$ and $Q=3$. As a result of the emergent magnetic field, Landau-level-like electronic band structure gives rise to quantized Hall conductivity when the Fermi energy is within the gaps between adjacent single band or multiple bands intertwined. We found that different from conventional ($Q=1$) SkX the Hall quantization number increas…
We propose models of two dimensional paramagnetic semiconductors where the intrinsic spin Hall effect is exactly quantized in integer units of a topological charge. The model describes a topological insulator in the bulk, and a "holographic metal" at the edge, where the number of extended edge states crossing the Fermi level is dictated by (exactly equal to) the bulk topological charge. We also demonstrate the spin Hall effect explicitly in terms of the spin accumulation caused by the adiabatic flux insertion.
We present a theoretical realization of quantum spin and quantum valley Hall effects in silicene. We show that combination of an electric field and intrinsic spin-orbit interaction leads to quantum phase transitions at the charge neutrality point. This phase transition from a two dimensional topological insulator to a trivial insulating state is accompanied by a quenching of the quantum spin Hall effect and the onset of a quantum valley Hall effect, providing a tool to experimentally tune the topological state of silicene. In contrast to graphene and other conventional topological insulators, …
We study the quantum Hall effect of Dirac fermions on the surface of a Wilson-Dirac type topological insulator thin film in the strong topological insulating phase. Although a magnetic field breaks time reversal symmetry of the bulk, the surface states can survive even in a strong field regime. We examine how the Landau levels of the surface states are affected by symmetry breaking perturbations.
We propose a new theory of the topological Hall effect (THE) in systems with chiral magnetization vortices such as magnetic skyrmions. We solve the problem of electron scattering on a magnetic skyrmion exactly, for an arbitrary strength of exchange interaction and the skyrmion size. We report the existence of different regimes of THE and resolve the apparent contradiction between the adiabatic Berry phase theoretical approach and the perturbation theory for THE. We traced how the topological charge Hall effect transforms into the spin Hall effect upon varying the exchange interaction strength …
