Topological phases have spurred unprecedented abilities for sound, light and matter engineering and recent progress has shown how waves not only confine at the interfaces between topologically distinct insulators, but in the form of zero-dimensional non-propagating states bound to defects or corners. Majorana-like bound states have recently been observed in man-made Kekulé textured lattices. We show here how the acoustic version of the associated Jackiw-Rossi vortex embodies a Thouless pumping process, in which the spectral flow of corner states adiabatically merge with the said Majorana-like state. Moreover, we argue how the chirality of the Kekulé vortex additionally maps into a 2D quantum-Hall system comprising spatially separated sonic hotspots. We foresee that our findings should provide novel exotic tools to enable contemporary control over sound.
Based on the Floquet scattering theory, we analytically investigate the topological spin pumping for an exactly solvable model. Floquet spin Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the periodically time-dependent system. The topological spin pumping remains robust both in the presence and in the absence of the time-reversal symmetry, as long as the pumping frequency is smaller than the band gap, where the electron transport involves only the Floquet evanescent modes in the pump. For the pumping frequency greater than the band gap, where the propagating modes in the pump participate in the…
We propose an experimental scheme to realize adiabatic topological spin and valley pumping by using silicene subject to an in-plane $ac$ electric field with amplitude $E_{y}$ and a vertical electric field consisting of an electrostatic component and an $ac$ component with amplitudes $E_{z}^{0}$ and $E_{z}^{1}$. By tuning $E_{z}^{0}$ and $E_{z}^{1}$, topological valley pumping or spin-valley pumping can be achieved. The noisefree valley and spin currents generated could be useful in valleytronic and spintronic applications. This work demonstrates that bulk topological spin or valley pumping is …
The topological pumping [1-3] is revisited from a view point of the bulk-edge correspondence. Shift of the center of mass (CM) as a pumped charge is explicitly given by the Berry connection in time direction. We show that observed pumping is due to the bulk, but its quantization is guaranteed by singular motion of the CM caused by edge states. This is the bulk-edge correspondence in the topological pumping. A gauge invariant form of the pumped charge is proposed by the temporal gauge and is used to establish this bulk-edge correspondence.
The adiabatic topological pumping is proposed by periodically modulating a semiconductor nanowire double-quantum-dot chain. We demonstrate that the quantized charge transport can be achieved by a nontrivial modulation of the quantum-dot well and barrier potentials. When the quantum-dot well potential is replaced by a time-dependent staggered magnetic field, the topological spin pumping can be realized by periodically modulating the barrier potentials and magnetic field. We also demonstrate that in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the double-quantum-dot chain can be used to implem…
We study the quantized charge pumping of higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) with edge-corner correspondences based on the combination of the rotation of in-plane magnetic field and the quantum spin Hall effect. A picture of a specific charge pumping process is uncovered with the help of the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Significantly, we demonstrate that the quantized charge pumping current is achieved without the participation of bulk states, and the charges move along the boundary of the sample. Furthermore, the effects of external parameters on the pumping current is als…
Quantized charge pumping is a robust adiabatic phenomenon uniquely existing in topologically nontrivial systems. Such topological pumping not only brings fundamental insights to the evolution of states under the protection of topology but also provides a vital approach for the study of higher-dimensional topological phases. In this work, we demonstrate topological pumping in an acoustic waveguide system by showing the successful pumping of topological boundary states (TBSs) across the bulk to the opposite edge. By exploring the finite-size induced mini-gap between two TBS bands, we unveil the …
Topological pumping of edge states in finite crystals or quasicrystals with non-trivial topological phases provides a powerful means for robust excitation transfer. In most schemes of topological pumping, the edge states become delocalized and immersed into the continuum during the adiabatic cycle, requiring extremely slow evolution to avoid nonadiabatic effects. Here a scheme of topological pumping based on adiabatic passage of edge and interface states is proposed, which is more robust against nonadiabatic effects and avoids delocalization of the state over the entire adiabatic cycle. The sc…
We introduce modulational instability in non-Hermitian systems to study state conversion of topological edge states. We show that state conversion in non-Hermitian systems leads to topological pumping, which is a way of transferring topological edge state from one edge to the opposite edge. In contrast to Hermitian systems, topological pumping can occur spontaneously in non-Hermitian systems.
Single electron pumping based on the topological property of Majorana fermions (MFs) is proposed. The setup consists of a quantum dot and four nano topological superconductors (TSs) connected by constriction junctions, with an additional vortex located in the loop of TSs. Operation is performed by gate voltages at constriction junctions. Simulations with Bogloliubov-de Gennes equation demonstrate successfully quantum protection during switching operation.
Topological pumping and duality transformations are paradigmatic concepts in condensed matter and statistical mechanics. In this paper, we extend the concept of topological pumping of particles to topological pumping of quantum correlations. We propose a scheme to find pumping protocols for highly-correlated states by mapping them to uncorrelated ones. We show that one way to achieve this is to use dualities, because they are non-local transformations that preserve the topological properties of the system. By using them, we demonstrate that topological pumping of kinks and cluster-like excitat…
We elucidate the mechanism for instability of topological Thouless pumping in strongly interacting systems from a viewpoint of symmetry-protected topological phases. If the protecting symmetries of the underlying topological phases change between noninteracting fermions and a bosonic system in the strong coupling limit, the symmetry protection argument enforces a gap closing and thereby predicts a breakdown of the topological pumping. We also demonstrate that, even in the weakly interacting regime where the bulk topological pumping is still robust, the interaction effects manifest themselves i…
Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter discovered recently, which are characterized by unconventional bulk topological invariants. Proposals for practical applications of the TIs are mostly based upon their metallic surface or edge states. Here, we report the theoretical discovery of a bulk quantum pumping effect in a two-dimensional TI electrically modulated in adiabatic cycles. In each cycle, an amount of spin proportional to the sample width can be pumped into a nonmagnetic electrode, which is attributed to nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}$. Moreover, by using a h…
A one-dimensional quantum charge pump transfers a quantized charge in each pumping cycle. This quantization is topologically robust being analogous to the quantum Hall effect. The charge transferred in a fraction of the pumping period is instead generally unquantized. We show, however, that with specific symmetries in parameter space the charge transferred at well-defined fractions of the pumping period is quantized as integer fractions of the Chern number. We illustrate this in a one-dimensional Harper-Hofstadter model and show that the fractional quantization of the topological charge pumpin…
We study the adiabatic topological charge pumping driven by interlayer sliding in the moiré superlattices. We show that, when we slide a single layer of the twisted bilayer system relatively to the other, a moiré pattern flow and a quantized transport of electrons occurs. When the Fermi energy is in a spectral gap, the number of pumped charges in the interlayer sliding process is quantized to a sliding Chern number, which obeys a Diophantine equation analogous to the quantum Hall effect. We apply the argument to the twisted bilayer graphene, and find that energy gaps above and below the nearly…
Topological Thouless pumping and Aharonov-Bohm effect are both fundamental effects enabled by the topological properties of the system. Here, we study both effects together: topological pumping of interacting particles through Aharonov-Bohm rings. This system can prepare highly entangled many-particle states, transport them via topological pumping and interfere them, revealing a fractional flux quantum. The type of the generated state is revealed by non-trivial Aharonov-Bohm interference patterns that could be used for quantum sensing. The reflections induced by the interference result from tr…
We investigate adiabatic quantum pumping of Dirac fermions on the surface of a strong 3D topological insulator. Two different geometries are studied in detail, a normal metal -- ferromagnetic -- normal metal (NFN) junction and a ferromagnetic -- normal metal -- ferromagnetic (FNF) junction. Using a scattering matrix approach, we first calculate the tunneling conductance and then the adiabatically pumped current using different pumping mechanisms for both types of junctions. We explain the oscillatory behavior of the conductance by studying the condition for resonant transmission in the junctio…
We demonstrate that a quantum spin Hall current, spontaneously generated at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator, acts as a source of spin-pumping for a magnetic impurity with uniaxial anisotropy. One can then manipulate the impurity spin direction by means of an electrical current without using either magnetic electrodes or an external magnetic field. Furthermore we show that the unique properties of the quantum spin Hall topological state have profound effects on the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum of the impurity. For low current densities inelastic spin-flip events do …
We study topological charge pumping in one-dimensional quasiperiodic systems. Since these systems lack periodicity, we cannot use the conventional approach based on the topological Chern number defined in the momentum space. Here, we develop a general formalism based on a real space picture using the so-called Bott index. We extend the Bott index that was previously used to characterize quantum Hall effects in quasiperiodic systems, and apply it to topological charge pumping in quasiperiodic systems. The Bott index allows us to systematically compute topological indices of charge pumping, rega…
The notion of topological (Thouless) pumping in topological phases is traditionally associated with Laughlin's pump argument for the quantization of the Hall conductance in two-dimensional (2D) quantum Hall systems. It relies on magnetic flux variations that thread the system of interest without penetrating its bulk, in the spirit of Aharonov-Bohm effects. Here we explore a different paradigm for topological pumping induced, instead, by magnetic flux variations $δχ$ inserted through the bulk of topological phases. We show that $δχ$ generically controls the analog of a topological pump, accompa…
Quasiperiodic lattices have recently been shown to be a non-trivial topological phase of matter. Charge pumping -- one of the hallmarks of topological states of matter -- was recently realized for photons in a one-dimensional (1D) off-diagonal Harper model implemented in a photonic waveguide array. The topologically nontrivial 1D Fibonacci quasicrystal (QC) is expected to facilitate a similar phenomenon, but its discrete nature and lack of pumping parameter hinder the experimental study of such topological effects. In this work we overcome these obstacles by utilizing a family of topologically…
We study adiabatic pumping at a normal metal/class-D superconductor hybrid interface when superconductivity is induced through the proximity effect in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire in the presence of a tilted Zeeman field. When the induced order parameter in the nanowire is non-uniform, the phase diagram has isolated trivial regions surrounded by topological ones. We show that in this case the pumped charge is quantized in units of the elementary charge $e$ and has a topological nature.
We use exact techniques to demonstrate theoretically the pumping of fractional charges in a single-level non-interacting quantum dot, when the dot-reservoir coupling is adiabatically driven from weak to strong coupling. The pumped charge averaged over many cycles is quantized at a fraction of an electron per cycle, determined by the ratio of Lamb shift to level-broadening; this ratio is imposed by the reservoir band-structure. For uniform density of states, half an electron is pumped per cycle. We call this "adiabatic almost-topological pumping", because the pumping's Berry curvature is sharpl…
We extend the theory of dipole moments in crystalline insulators to higher multipole moments. In this paper, we expand in great detail the theory presented in Ref. 1, and extend it to cover associated topological pumping phenomena, and a novel class of 3D insulator with chiral hinge states. In quantum-mechanical crystalline insulators, higher multipole bulk moments manifest themselves by the presence of boundary-localized moments of lower dimension, in exact correspondence with the electromagnetic theory of classical continuous dielectrics. In the presence of certain symmetries, these moments …
We study one-dimensional topological models with dimerization and trimerization and show that these models can be generated using interaction or optical superlattice. The topological properties of these models are demonstrated by the appearance of edge states and the mechanism of dimerization and trimerization is analyzed. Then we show that a quantum pumping process can be constructed based on each one-dimensional topological model. The quantum pumping process is explicitly demonstrated by the instantaneous energy spectrum and local current. The result shows that the pumping is assisted by the…
We have established a semiclassical kinetic approach for various spin correlated pumping phenomena incorporating spin rotation in wave functions into transport equations. We employ this technique to study topological pumps and illustrate spin pumping in a few models where various spin configurations or topological motors drive adiabatic pumps. In the Rashba model we find that a topological spin pump is driven by a meron with positive one half skyrmion charge, the size of which can be controlled by external gates or Zeeman fields. In the Dresselhaus model on the other hand, electron spins are p…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators are known for their strong spin-orbit coupling and the existence of spin-textured topological surface states which could be potentially exploited for spintronics. Here, we investigate spin pumping from a metallic ferromagnet (CoFeB) into a 3D topological insulator (Bi2Se3) and demonstrate successful spin injection from CoFeB into Bi2Se3 and the direct detection of the electromotive force generated by the inverse spin Hal effect (ISHE) at room temperature. The spin pumping, driven by the magnetization dynamics of the metallic ferromagnet, introduces…
We study the edge states of twisted bilayer graphene and their topological origin. We show that the twisted bilayer graphene has special edge states associated with the moiré pattern, and the emergence of these moiré edge states is linked with the sliding Chern number, which describes topological charge pumping caused by relative interlayer sliding. When one layer of the twisted bilayer is relatively slid with respect to the other layer, the edge states are transferred from a single band to another across the band gap, and the number of the edge states pumped in a sliding cycle is shown to be …
We show how to implement topological or Thouless pumping of interacting photons in one dimensional nonlinear resonator arrays, by simply modulating the frequency of the resonators periodically in space and time. The interplay between interactions and the adiabatic modulations enables robust transport of Fock states with few photons per site. We analyze the transport mechanism via an effective analytic model and study its topological properties and its protection to noise. We conclude by a detailed study of an implementation with existing circuit QED architectures.
Solids with topologically robust electronic states exhibit unusual electronic and optical transport properties that do not exist in other materials. A particularly interesting example is chiral charge pumping, the so-called chiral anomaly, in recently discovered topological Weyl semimetals, where simultaneous application of parallel DC electric and magnetic fields creates an imbalance in the number of carriers of opposite topological charge (chirality). Here, using time-resolved terahertz measurements on the Weyl semimetal TaAs in a magnetic field, we optically interrogate the chiral anomaly b…
Based on a quasi-one-dimensional limit of quantum Hall states on a thin torus, we construct a model of interaction-induced topological pumping which mimics the Hall response of the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. The quasi-one-dimensional counterpart of the BIQH state is identified as the Haldane phase composed of two-component bosons which form effective spin-$1$ degrees of freedom. An adiabatic change between the Haldane phase and trivial Mott insulators constitute {\it off-diagonal} topological pumping in which the translation of the lattice potential for one component induces a …
The transport of energy through 1-dimensional (1D) waveguiding channels can be affected by sub-wavelength disorder, resulting in undesirable localization and backscattering phenomena. However, quantized disorder-resilient transport is observable in the edge currents of 2-dimensional (2D) topological band insulators with broken time-reversal symmetry. Topological pumps are able to reduce this higher-dimensional topological insulator phenomena to lower dimensionality by utilizing a pumping parameter (either space or time) as an artificial dimension. Here we demonstrate the first temporal topolog…
We investigate the spin-pumping-induced electric current on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator hybridized with a ferromagnet, namely, ferromagnetic topological insulator. In order to do this, we establish the microscopic formalism and construct the perturbation theory using a Keldysh Green's function approach. We analyze how this electric current is generated by an exchange interaction and an external ac magnetic field, which is the driving force of ferromagnetic resonance as well as the spin pumping. The mechanism is as follows. First, the ferromagnetic resonance is driv…
We show that a sliding motion between the two layers of a \moire superlattice induces an electric current and realizes a two-dimensional version of the topological Thouless pump when the Fermi energy lies in one of the minigaps. Interestingly, a chiral charge pump, namely, a transverse current induced by the sliding motion, is possible in twisted homobilayers. This result is confirmed by a concrete calculation of the adiabatic current in twisted bilayer graphene. Our work reveals an interesting link between mechanical motion and electricity unique to \moire superlattices, and may find applicat…
A Thouless pump can be regarded as a dynamical version of the integer quantum Hall effect. In a finite-size configuration, such topological pump displays edge modes that emerge dynamically from one bulk-band and dive into the opposite bulk-band, an effect that can be reproduced with both quantum and classical systems. Here, we report the first un-assisted dynamic energy transfer across a metamaterial, via pumping of such topological edge modes. The system is a topological aperiodic acoustic crystal, with a phason that can be fast and periodically driven in adiabatic cycles. When one edge of th…
In this article, we develop a description of topological pumps as slow classical dynamical variables coupled by a quantum system. We discuss the cases of quantum Hall pumps, Thouless pumps, and the more recent Floquet pumps based frequency converters. This last case corresponds to a quantum topological coupling between classical modes described by action-angle variables on which we focus. We propose a realization of such a topological coupler based on a superconducting qutrit suitably driven by three modulated drives. A detailed experimental protocol allowing to measure the quantized topologic…
The topological property in one dimension (1D) is protected by symmetry. Based on a concrete model, we show that since a 1D topological model usually contain two of the three Pauli matrix, the left one automatically become the protecting symmetry. We study the effect of disorder preserving or breaking the symmetry and show the nature of symmetry protecting in the 1D topological phase. Based on the 1D topological model, a stable quantum pumping can be constructed, which is topologically nontrivial and can be characterized by the Chern number. By calculating the instantaneous local current we sh…
Thouless pumping is a mechanism to perform topologically protected transport of particles by adiabatically modulating the Hamiltonian. The transported current is a topological invariant that is intimately related to the integer quantum Hall effect. Most of the previous works focus on topological pumping in linear and square lattices. In this work, we theoretically propose a mechanism to perform topological pumping in arrays of spin chains with complex geometries. To achieve this, we consider an array where the spin chains are coupled through their edges, which allows to split the populations t…
The discovery of the quantization of particle transport in adiabatic pumping cycles of periodic structures by Thouless [Phys. Rev. B 27, 6083 (1983)] linked the Chern number, a topological invariant characterizing the quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional electron gases, with the topology of dynamical periodic systems in one dimension. Here, we demonstrate its counterpart for higher-order topology. Specifically, we show that adiabatic cycles in two-dimensional crystals with vanishing dipole moments (and therefore zero overall particle transport) can nevertheless be topologically nontrivial. T…
We demonstrate that modulations of the stiffness properties of an elastic plate along a spatial dimension induce edge states spanning non-trivial gaps characterized by integer valued Chern numbers. We also show that topological pumping is induced by smooth variations of the phase of the modulation profile along one spatial dimension, which results in adiabatic edge-to-edge transitions of the edge states. The concept is first illustrated numerically for sinusoidal stiffness modulations, and then experimentally demonstrated in a plate with square-wave thickness profile. The presented numerical a…
Constructing new topological materials is of vital interest for the development of robust quantum applications. However, engineering such materials often causes technological overhead, such as large magnetic fields, specific lattice geometries, strong spin-orbit coupling, synthetic dimensions, or dynamical superlattice potentials. Simplifying the experimental requirements has been addressed on a conceptual level - by proposing to combine simple lattice structures with Floquet engineering - but there has been no experimental implementation. Here, we demonstrate topological pumping in a Floquet-…
We show that in excitonic insulators with $s$-wave electron-hole pairing, an applied electric field (either pulsed or static) can induce a $p$-wave component to the order parameter, and further drive it to rotate in the $s+ip$ plane, realizing a Thouless charge pump. In one dimension, each cycle of rotation pumps exactly two electrons across the sample. Higher dimensional systems can be viewed as a stack of one dimensional chains in momentum space in which each chain crossing the fermi surface contributes a channel of charge pumping. Physics beyond the adiabatic limit, including in particular …
Lowering of the thickness of a thin-film three-dimensional topological insulator down to a few nanometers results in the gap opening in the spectrum of topologically protected two-dimensional surface states. This phenomenon, which is referred to as the anomalous finite-size effect, originates from hybridization between the states propagating along the opposite boundaries. In this work, we consider a bismuth-based topological insulator and show how the coupling to an intense high-frequency linearly polarized pumping can further be used to manipulate the value of a gap. We address this effect wi…
Recent studies indicated that helical organic molecules, such as DNA and $α$-helical protein, can behave as Thouless quantum pumps when a rotating electric field is applied perpendicularly to their helical axes. Here we investigate the influence of long-range hoppings on this topological pumping of electrons in single-helical organic molecules. Under variation of the long-range hoppings governed by a decay exponent $μ$, we find an energy gap in the molecular band structure closes at a critical value $μ_c$ of the decay exponent and reopens for $μ$ deviating from $μ_c$. The relevant bulk bands i…
Topological spintronics aims to exploit the spin-momentum locking in the helical surface states of topological insulators for spin-orbit torque devices. We address a fundamental question that still remains unresolved in this context: does the topological surface state alone produce the largest values of spin-charge conversion efficiency or can the strongly spin-orbit coupled bulk states also contribute significantly? By studying the Fermi level dependence of spin pumping in topological insulator/ferrimagnetic insulator bilayers, we show that the spin Hall conductivity is constant when the Ferm…
We study topological features of interacting spin- 1 2 particles in one-dimensional state-dependent optical lattices. Due to the co-translational symmetry, we introduce the center-of-mass Zak phase with the help of center-of-mass momentum. There appear topological bound states composed by two particles in different spin states via tuning hopping and interaction strengths. Under symmetric open boundary conditions, topological edge bound-states appear as a result of the non-trivial center-ofmass Zak phase of bound-state band, which is protected by the center-of-mass inversion symmetry. The inter…
We establish a general formulation for spin current pumped by magnons at the interface between a normal metal and a magnetic insulator, valid for any non-collinear magnetic configuration in the linear spin wave regime. This current is generated by driving the system in a non-equilibrium state, covering setups such as thermal spin injection (spin Seebeck effect) or spin voltage by irradiation of the insulator (spin pumping). We illustrate the formula in the special case of a honeycomb topological ferromagnet, for simplicity, and cover both the spin Seebeck and spin-pumping setups. We show how t…

The Edelstein effect caused by the pristine surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators is investigated by means of a semiclassical approach. The combined effect of random impurity scattering and the spin-momentum locking of the gapless Dirac cone yields a current-induced surface spin accumulation independent from chemical potential and temperature. In a nearby ferromagnet that does not make direct contact with the topological insulator, the bound state nature of the pristine surface state causes a spin-transfer torque that is entirely field-like, whose magnitude is highly influ…
Pure spin currents are shown to be generated by an electrically controlled quantum pump applied at the edges of a topological insulator. The electric rather than the more conventional magnetic control offers several advantages and avoids, in particular, the necessity of delicate control of magnetization dynamics over tiny regions. The pump is implemented by pinching the sample at two quantum point contacts and phase modulating two external gate voltages between them. The spin current is generated for the full range of parameters. On the other hand, pumping via amplitude modulation of the inter…
