We provide a complete characterization of the metric Killing bundles (or metric bundles) of the Kerr geometry. Metric bundles, first introduced in [21] can be generally defined for axially symmetric spacetimes with Killing horizons and, for the case of Kerr geometries, are sets of black holes (BHs) or black holes and naked singularities (NSs) geometries. Each metric of a bundle has an equal limiting photon (orbital) frequency, which defines the bundle and coincides with the frequency of a Killing horizon in the extended plane. In this plane each bundle is represented as a curve tangent to the curve that represents the horizons, which thus emerge as the envelope surfaces of the metric bundles. We show that the horizons frequency can be used to establish a connection between BHs and NSs, providing an alternative representation of such spacetimes in the extended plane and an alternative definition of the BH horizons. We introduce the concept of inner horizon confinement and horizons replicas and study the possibility of detecting their frequencies. We study the bundle characteristic frequencies constraining the inner horizon confinement in the outer region of the plane i.e. the possibility of detect frequency related to the inner horizon, and the horizons replicas, structures which may be detectable, for example, from the emission spectra of BHs spacetimes. It is shown that such observations can be performed close to the rotation axis of the Kerr geometry, depending on the BH spin. We argue that these results could be used to further investigate black holes and their thermodynamic properties.
The properties of Kerr black holes (BHs)and naked singularities (NSs) are investigated by using stationary observers and their limiting frequencies. We introduce the concept of NS Killing throats and bottlenecks for slowly spinning NSs to describe the frequency of stationary observers. In particular, we show the frequency on the horizon can be used to point out a connection between BHs and NSs and to interpret the horizon in terms of frequencies. The analysis is performed on the equatorial plane of the ergoregion.
We study the properties of black holes and naked singularities by considering stationary observers and light surfaces in Kerr spacetimes. We reconsider the notion of Killing horizons from a special perspective by exploring the entire family of Kerr metrics. To this end, we introduce the concepts of extended plane, Killing throats and bottlenecks for weak (slowly spinning) naked singularities. Killing bottlenecks (or horizon remnants in analogy with the corresponding definition of throats in black holes) are restrictions of the Killing throats appearing in special classes of slowly spinning nak…
We investigate the implications of the existence of Killing spinors in a spacetime. In particular, we show that in vacuum and electrovacuum a Killing spinor, along with some assumptions on the associated Killing vector in an asymptotic region, guarantees that the spacetime is locally isometric to the Kerr or Kerr-Newman solutions. We show that the characterisation of these spacetimes in terms of Killing spinors is an alternative expression of characterisation results of Mars (Kerr) and Wong (Kerr-Newman) involving restrictions on the Weyl curvature and matter content.
We construct special solutions of the Nambu-Goto equations for stationary strings in a general Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime in any number of dimensions. This construction is based on the existence of explicit and hidden symmetries generated by the principal tensor which exists for these metrics. The characteristic property of these string configurations, which we call "principal Killing strings," is that they are stretched out from "infinity" to the horizon of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS black hole and remain regular at the latter. We also demonstrate that principal Killing strings extract angular momentum…

We present a purely geometric method for constructing a rank two Killing tensor in a spacetime with a codimension one foliation that lifts the trivial Killing tensors from slices to the entire manifold. The resulting Killing tensor can be nontrivial. A deep connection is found between the existence of such a Killing tensor and the presence of generalized photon surfaces in spacetime with two Killing vector fields. This technique generates Killing tensors in a purely algebraic way, without solving differential equations. The use of our method is demonstrated for Kerr, Kerr-Newman-NUT-AdS metric…
We analyse a rotating regular black hole with asymptotically Minkowski core. This Kerr-like geometry possesses the full "Killing tower" of nontrivial Killing tensor, Killing-Yano tensor, and principal tensor. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation, the Klein-Gordon equation, and Maxwell's equations are separable. Energy-condition-violating physics is pushed into an arbitrarily small region in the deep core. The geometry has a very high level of mathematical tractability; extraction of astrophysical observables falsifiable/verifiable by the observational community is straightforward.
We describe the construction of a geometric invariant characterising initial data for the Kerr-Newman spacetime. This geometric invariant vanishes if and only if the initial data set corresponds to exact Kerr-Newman initial data, and so characterises this type of data. We first illustrate the characterisation of the Kerr-Newman spacetime in terms of Killing spinors. The space spinor formalism is then used to obtain a set of four independent conditions on an initial Cauchy hypersurface that guarantee the existence of a Killing spinor on the development of the initial data. Following a similar a…
We study a class of limits of the higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes where particular roots of metric functions degenerate. Namely, we obtain the Taub-NUT-(A)dS and the extreme near-horizon geometries as two examples of our limiting procedure. The symmetries of the resulting spacetimes are enhanced which is manifested by the presence of supplementary Killing vectors and decomposition of Killing tensors into Killing vectors.
We study hidden symmetries, the symmetries associated with the Killing tensors, of the near horizon geometry of odd-dimensional Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in two limits: generic extremal and extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limits. Starting from Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in ellipsoidal coordinates which admits integrable geodesic equations, we obtain the near horizon extremal/EVH geometries and their principal and Killing tensors by taking the near horizon limit. We explicitly demonstrate that geodesic equations are separable and integrable on theses near horizon geometries. We also compute the con…
We obtain a coordinate independent algorithm to determine the class of conformal Killing vectors of a locally conformally flat $n$-metric $γ$ of signature $(r,s)$ modulo conformal transformations of $γ$. This is done in terms of endomorphisms in the pseudo-orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(r+1,s+1)$ up to conjugation of the its group $O(r+1,s+1)$. The explicit classification is worked out in full for the Riemannian $γ$ case ($r = 0, s = n$). As an application of this result, we prove that the set of five dimensional, $(Λ>0)$-vacuum, algebraically special metrics with non-degenerate optical …
We find an explicit solution of the source free Maxwell equations in a generalized Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime in all dimensions. This solution is obtained as a linear combination of the closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor $h_{ab}$, which is present in such a spacetime, and a derivative of the primary Killing vector, associated with $h_{ab}$. For the vanishing cosmological constant the obtained solution reduces to the Wald's electromagnetic field generated from the primary Killing vector.
The Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime in the Kaluza-Klein theory represents a localized stationary and axisymmetric object in four dimensions from the Kaluza-Klein viewpoint. That is, it harbors companion electromagnetic and dilaton fields, thereby showing up the signature of the extra fifth dimension. We explore the separability structure of this spacetime and show that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for geodesics admits the complete separation of variables only for massless geodesics. This implies the existence of the hidden symmetries in the spacetime, which are generated by the conformal Killing tenso…
We revisit the conserved quantities of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew equations describing the motion of spinning particles on a fixed background. Assuming Ricci-flatness and the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor, we demonstrate that besides the two non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities, i.e. conserved at linear order in the spin, found by Rüdiger, non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities are in one-to-one correspondence with non-trivial mixed-symmetry Killing tensors. We prove that no such stationary and axisymmetric mixed-symmetry Killing tensor exists on the Kerr geometry. We discuss th…
We present two complex scalar gauge invariants for perturbations of the Kerr spacetime defined covariantly in terms of the Killing vectors and the conformal Killing-Yano tensor of the background together with the linearized curvature and its first derivatives. These invariants are in particular sensitive to variations of the Kerr parameters. Together with the Teukolsky scalars and the linearized Ricci tensor they form a minimal set that generates all local gauge invariants. We also present curvature invariants that reduce to the gauge invariants in linearized theory.
A characterization of the Kerr-NUT-(A)de Sitter metric among four dimensional Λ-vacuum spacetimes admitting a Killing vector is obtained in terms of the proportionality of the self-dual Weyl tensor and a natural self-dual double two-form constructed from the Killing vector. This result recovers and extends a previous characterization of the Kerr and Kerr-NUT metrics. The method of proof is based on (i) the presence of a second Killing vector field which is built in terms of geometric information arising from the previous Killing vector exclusively, and (ii) the existence of an interesting unde…
We present a highly tractable non-singular modification of the Kerr geometry, dubbed the "eye of the storm" -- a rotating regular black hole with an asymptotically Minkowski core. This is achieved by "exponentially suppressing" the mass parameter in the Kerr spacetime: $m\to m \; e^{-\ell/r}$. The single parameter $\ell$ quantifies the deviation from the usual Kerr spacetime. Some of the classical energy conditions are globally satisfied, whilst certain choices for $\ell$ force any energy-condition-violating physics into the deep core. The geometry possesses the full "Killing tower'" of princi…
We study a limit of the Kerr-(A)dS spacetime in a general dimension where an arbitrary number of its rotational parameters is set equal. The resulting metric after the limit formally splits into two parts - the first part has the form of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric analogous to the metric of the entire spacetime, but only for the directions not subject to the limit, and the second part can be interpreted as the Kähler metrics. However, this separation is not integrable, thus it does not lead to a product of independent manifolds. We also reconstruct the original number of explicit and hidden sym…
We construct an asymptotic conserved charge for a current that has been defined using Killing-Yano tensors. We then calculate the corresponding conserved charges of of the Kerr and AdS-Kerr black holes, and their higher-dimensional generalizations, Myers-Perry and Gibbons-Lü-Page-Pope black holes. The new charges all turn out to be proportional to the angular momenta of their parent black holes.
We study fixed points of isometries of the higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes that form generalizations of symmetry axes. It turns out that, in the presence of nonzero NUT charges, some parts of the symmetry axes are necessarily singular and their intersections are surrounded by regions with closed timelike curves. Motivated by similarities with the spacetime of a spinning cosmic string, we introduce geometric quantities that characterize various types of singularities on symmetry axes. Expanding the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes around candidates for possible fixed points, we find the K…
We provide a classification of $Λ>0$-vacuum spacetimes which admit a Killing vector field with respect to which the associated "Mars-Simon tensor" (MST) vanishes and having a conformally flat $\mathcal{J}^-$ (or $\mathcal{J}^+$). To that end, we also give a complete classification of conformal Killing vector fields on the $3$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ up to Möbius transformations shedding light on the two fundamental constants that characterize the family of Kerr-de Sitter-like spacetimes, which turn out to be well-defined geometrical invariants. The topology of $\mathcal{J}$ is determined in ever…
It is believed that in any number of dimensions the off-shell Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric represents a unique geometry admitting the principal (rank 2, non-degenerate, closed conformal Killing-Yano) tensor. The original proof relied on the Euclidean signature and therein natural assumption that the eigenvalues of the principal tensor have gradients of spacelike character. In this paper we evade this common wisdom and construct new classes of Lorentzian (and other signature) off-shell metrics admitting the principal tensor with null eigenvalues, uncovering so a much richer structure of spacetimes wit…
Given the recent development of rotating black-bounce-Kerr spacetimes, for both theoretical and observational purposes it becomes interesting to see whether it might be possible to construct black-bounce variants of the entire Kerr-Newman family. Specifically, herein we shall consider black-bounce-Reissner-Nordström and black-bounce-Kerr-Newman spacetimes as particularly simple and clean everywhere-regular black hole "mimickers" that deviate from the Kerr-Newman family in a precisely controlled and minimal manner, and smoothly interpolate between regular black holes and traversable wormholes. …
In 1963 Ezra Ted Newman and his two students Louis A. Tamburino, and Theodore W. J. Unti, proposed a deformation of the Shwarzschild spacetime that made it twisting. In the cosmological context, an equivalent solution had been found earlier, in 1951, by Abraham Haskel Taub. The problem that these solutions have is a conical singularity along the symmetry axis at all distances from the origin. In 1969 Misner proposed a non-singular interpretation of Taub-NUT spacetimes. We extend and refine his method to include a broader family of solutions and completely solve the outstanding issue of a non-s…
The Kerr solution in coordinates corotating with the horizon is studied as a testbed for a spacetime with a helical Killing vector in the Ernst picture. The solution is numerically constructed by solving the Ernst equation with a spectral method and a Newton iteration. We discuss convergence of the iteration for several initial iterates and different values of the Kerr parameters.
We study Killing horizons and their neighbourhoods in the Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter and the accelerated Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. The geometries of the horizons have an irremovable singularity at one of the poles, unless the parameters characterising the spacetimes satisfy the constraint we derive and solve in the current paper. In the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter case, the constraint relates the cosmological constant of spacetime and the horizon area, leaving 3 parameters free. In the accelerated case the acceleration becomes a 4th parameter that allows the cosmological constant to take arb…
We make use of the black hole holograph construction of [I. Rácz, Stationary black holes as holographs, Class. Quantum Grav. 31, 035006 (2014)] to analyse the existence of Killing spinors in the domain of dependence of the horizons of distorted black holes. In particular, we provide conditions on the bifurcation sphere ensuring the existence of a Killing spinor. These conditions can be understood as restrictions on the curvature of the bifurcation sphere and ensure the existence of an axial Killing vector on the 2-surface. We obtain the most general 2-dimensional metric on the bifurcation sphe…
