Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected stable magnetization configurations, which are expected to be a promising candidate as information carrier, while defect is inevitable and plays an important role on the stabilization and movement of skyrmion. In this paper, we investigated the influence of a point defect and a ring defect on the stabilization and dynamics of skyrmion in the nanodisk, where the defect are acquired by local modification magnetic material parameters. Considering the combined action of geometry confinement and pinning effect, we demonstrate the preferred skyrmion position as a function of defect type and distance between skyrmion and a point defect. We also show the confinement effect on skyrmion size in the presence of a ring defect due to circular symmetry. Finally, in the application of spin transfer nano-oscillator, we show that the skyrmion can be pinned or rotate in the nanodisk, the oscillator frequency can be modified in a large variation by the ring defect. These findings provide a complete understanding of interaction between skyrmion and defect in the confined geometry and may provide a good strategy for the design of skyrmion oscillators.
A type of vortex spin texture with skyrmionic core and a series of circle spin stripes was obtained in thin nanodisk of the chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and uniaxial anisotropy by means of micromagnetic approach and Monte Carlo simulation. The size of skyrmionic core can be modulated continuously by controlling the disk size. Moreover, in some certain values of the disk size, this vortex state may be spontaneous ground state even without the help of the external magnetic field and thermal fluctuation. In addition, the uniaxial anisotropy is able to stabilize this vorte…
A target skyrmion is a flux-closed spin texture that has two-fold degeneracy and is promising as a binary state in next generation universal memories. Although its formation in nanopatterned chiral magnets has been predicted, its observation has remained challenging. Here, we use off-axis electron holography to record images of target skyrmions in a 160-nm-diameter nanodisk of the chiral magnet FeGe. We compare experimental measurements with numerical simulations, demonstrate switching between two stable degenerate target skyrmion ground states that have opposite polarities and rotation senses…
A skyrmion in a nanosized disk of a chiral magnet can be used as a bit of information. To this end, it is desirable to control the creation and removal of a skyrmion only by currents without using external magnetic fields. Here we propose to create a skyrmion by applying a current pulse to a nanodisk. The skyrmion can be removed from the disk by applying a dc current. We show that the dynamics of the created skyrmion can lead to a rectification effect, in which a dc voltage is generated by the motion of skyrmion in the presence of an ac current.
We employ a self-consistent simulation approach based on quantum physics here to study the magnetism of antiferromagnetic skyrmions formed on manolayer nanodisk planes. We find that if the disk is small and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction is weak, a single magnetic vortex may be formed on the disk plane. In such a case, when uniaxial anisotropy normal to the disk plane is further considered, the magnetic configuration remains unchanged, but the magnetization is enhanced in that direction, and reduced in other two perpendicular orientations. Very similarly, a weak external magnetic fi…
Rare earth Fe B permanent magnets are usually used because of their excellent magnetic performance at room temperature. The high price of these elements pushes some researchers to find new alternatives. From rare earth elements cerium (Ce) is considered as the most abundant and cheap, therefore, the interest was focused to study the properties of alloys based on this element in recent years. In this work, we investigate the magnetization behavior of CeFeB nanodisks in presence of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. We show that topological structures, Neel skyrmions, in particular, could be nuc…

The magnetic field-driven evolution of chiral spin textures in thin helimagnet nanodisk with varied size are investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation. It is demonstrated that the complex spin texture may simply be regarded as the superposition of the edged state with in plane spin orientation perpendicular or parallel to the edge and the bulk state with the features similar to two-dimensional chiral magnetic films. With the increase of the external field, the proportion of the parallel spins of the edge state increases, and the spin textures finally transfers into edged magnetic vortex.…
We give a theoretical study on the magnetic properties of monolayer nanodisks with both Heisenberg exchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. In particular, we survey the magnetic effects caused by anisotropy, external magnetic field, and disk size when DM interaction is present by means of a new quantum simulation method based on mean-field theory. This computational approach finds that uniaxial anisotropy and transverse magnetic field enhances the net magnetization as well as increases the transition temperature of the vortex phase while preserving the chiralities of the nanodisks.…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates for future information technology. Here, we present a micromagnetic study of isolated skyrmions and skyrmion clusters in ferromagnetic nanodisks driven by the spin-polarized current with spatially varied polarization. The current-driven skyrmion clusters can be either dynamic steady or static, depending on the spatially varied polarization profile. For the dynamic steady state, the skyrmion cluster moves in a circle in the nanodisk, while for the static state, the skyrmion cluster is static. The frequency of the circular motion of skyrmion is also st…
Trigonal zigzag graphene nanodisk exhibits magnetism whose spin is proportional to the edge length of the nanodisk. Its spin can be designed from 1/2 to a huge value. The spins form a quasiferromagnet, which has intermediate properties between a single spin and a ferromagnet. In other words, the ferromagnet order has a relatively long life time, and yet the nanodisk spin can be rotated by external field or current. We consider a nanodisk connected with two leads. This system acts as a spin filter just as in a metal-ferromagnet-metal junction. In this way we can generate a spin current. Further…
Merons and skyrmions are classical topological solitons. However, they will become quantum mechanical objects when their sizes are of the order of nanometers. Recently, quantum computation based on nanoscale skyrmions was proposed. Here, we propose to use a nanoscale meron in a magnetic nanodisk as a qubit, where the up and down directions of the core spin are assigned to be the qubit states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$. First, we show numerically that a meron with the radius containing only $7$ spins can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic nanodisk classically. Then, we show theoretically that un…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological spin configurations, which can carry binary information and thus are promising building blocks for future spintronic devices. In this work, we investigate the relationship between the skyrmion dynamics and the characteristics of injected current in a skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillator, where the excitation source is introduced from a point nano-contact at the center of the nanodisk. It is found that the skyrmion will move away from the center of the nanodisk if it is driven by a spin-polarized current; however, it will return to the init…
Skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators are potential next-generation microwave signal generators. However, ferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators cannot reach high oscillation frequencies. In this work, we propose to use the circular motion of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion to create the oscillation signal in order to overcome this obstacle. Micromagnetic simulations demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators can produce high frequencies (tens of GHz). Furthermore, the speed of the circular motion for an antiferromagnetic skyrmion …
Skyrmions have become one of the most visited topics during the last decade in condensed matter physics. In this work, and by means of analytical calculations and micromagnetic simulations, we explore the effect of the magnetostatic field generated by a magnetic tip on the stability of skyrmions. Our results show that the interaction energy between the tip and the skyrmion plays a fundamental role in the stabilization of Néel skyrmions confined in nanodisks, allowing its nucleation and annihilation, and also providing precise control of its size and polarity. Based on our results, we propose a…
We investigate the influence of artificial defects (small holes) inserted into magnetic nanodisks on the vortex core dynamics. One and two holes (antidots) are considered. In general, the core falls into the hole but, in particular, we would like to remark an interesting phenomenon not yet observed, which is the vortex core switching induced by the vortex-hole interactions. It occurs for the case with only one hole and for very special conditions involving the hole size and position as well as the disk size. Any small deformation in the disk geometry such as the presence of a second antidot ch…
With the recent proposition of skyrmion utilization in racetrack memories at room temperature, skyrmionics has become a very attractive field. However, for the stability of skyrmions, it is essential to incorporate the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and the out-of-plane magnetic field into the system. In this work, we explore a system without these interactions. First, we propose a controlled way for the creation of magnetic skyrmions and skyrmioniums imprinted on a ferromagnetic nanotrack via a nanopatterned nanodisk with the magnetic vortex state. Then we investigate the detachment …
Using micromagnetic simulation, we investigate the self-sustained oscillation of magnetic skyrmion in a ferromagnetic circular nanodot, driven by spin-torque which is generated from a reference layer of a circular nanopillar device. We demonstrate, by lowering the value of uniaxial anisotropy constant ($K_u$), the velocity of the skyrmion can be increased and using this property, gyration frequency of the skyrmion oscillator can be enhanced. Annihilation of the skyrmion at higher current densities, limit the gyration frequency of the oscillator, whereas by modifying the $K_u$ value at the edge…
We study the impact of an exchange-reducing defect on a skyrmion for a thin film of finite thickness. Attraction of the skyrmion to a defect is demonstrated in a lattice model by computing the micromagnetic energy accounting for the exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy, and dipole-dipole coupling. The spiraling dynamics of the skyrmion towards the defect is illustrated by solving numerically the full Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations on a lattice and, independently, the Thiele equation, with the two methods in agreement with each other. We find that the skyrmion def…
An understanding of the pinning of magnetic skyrmions to defects is crucial for the development of future spintronic applications. While pinning is desirable for a precise positioning of magnetic skyrmions it is detrimental when they are to be moved through a material. We use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the interaction between atomic scale defects and magnetic skyrmions that are only a few nanometers in diameter. The studied pinning centers range from single atom inlayer defects and adatoms to clusters adsorbed on the surface of our model system. We find very different pinning stren…
Direct observation of vortex states in an antiferromagnetic layer have been recently reported [Wu, et al, Nature Phys. 7, 303 (2011)]. In contrast to their analogues in ferromagnetic systems, namely in nanomagnets, the vortex core of antiferromagnets are not expected (and have not been observed) to present gyrotropic or any other remarkable dynamics, even when external fields are applied. Using simulated annealing and spin dynamics techniques we have been able to describe a number of properties of such a vortex state. Besides of being in agreement with reported results, our results also indica…
The novel ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions driven by microwave magnetic fields, with the motion direction and speed tunable by field parameters, provides a promising route to drive magnetic skyrmions in materials with poor conductivity. However, as an indirect motion, skyrmion ratchet motion speed is generally low in comparison with the direct motions driven by current. Toward practical applications, it is important to ask if there are mechanisms to realize ultrafast ratchet motion of magnetic skyrmions and how such novel motion can be integrated into racetrack-type skyrmion devices. In th…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in spintronic devices. The transport of individual skyrmions in a fast and controlled way is a key issue in this field. Here we introduce a novel platform for accelerating, guiding and compressing skyrmions along predefined paths. The guiding mechanism is based on two parallel defect-lines (rails), one attractive and the other repulsive. Numerical simulations, using parameters from state-of-the-art experiments, show that the speed of the skyrmions along the rails is increased up to a factor of ten with respect to the non-defec…
Skyrmions have attracted significant interest due to their topological spin structures and fascinating physical features. The skyrmion phase arises in materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at interfaces or in volume of non-centrosymmetric materials. However, although skyrmions were generated experimentally, one critical intrinsic relationship between fabrication, microstructures, magnetization and the existence of skyrmions remains to be established. Here, two series of CoFeB ultrathin films with controlled atomic scale structures are employed to reveal this relationship. By in…
Magnetic skyrmions are prime candidates for future spintronic devices. However, incorporating them as an entity for information technology hinges on their interaction with defects ubiquitous to any device. Here we map from first-principles, the energy-profile of single skyrmions interacting with single-atom impurities, establishing a generic shape as function of the defect's electron filling. Depending on their chemical nature, foreign 3d and 4d transition metal adatoms or surface-implanted defects can either repel or pin skyrmions in PdFe/Ir(111) thin films, which we relate to the degree of f…
Magnetic skyrmions are prime candidates as information carriers for spintronic devices due to their topological nature and nanometric size. However, unavoidable inhomogeneities inherent to any material leads to pinning or repulsion of skyrmions that, in analogy to biology concepts, define the phenotype of the skyrmion-defect interaction, generating complexity in their motion and challenging their application as future bits of information. Here, we demonstrate that atom-by-atom manufacturing of multi-atomic defects, being antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic, permits the breeding of their energy …
High precision skyrmion pinning by an intentionally created magnetic structure is important in skyrmion manipulation. Here, we consider skyrmion pinning by various types of disks. Among other findings, we clarify that, in terms of pinning position and pinning potential landscape, one needs to distinguish thin-wall skyrmions from thick-wall skyrmions because of fundamental differences. A skyrmion wall prefers areas with a weaker exchange stiffness, a larger DMI constant, or a smaller magnetic anisotropy while a skyrmion core experiences only the magnetic anisotropy, not exchange stiffness and D…
Resting on multi-scale modelling simulations, we explore dynamical aspects characterizing skyrmions driven by spin-transfer-torque towards repulsive and pinning 3d and 4d single atomic defects embedded in a Pd layer deposited on the Fe/Ir(111) surface. The latter is known to host sub-10 nm skyrmions which are of great interest in information technology. The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is parametrized with magnetic exchange interactions extracted from first-principles. Depending on the nature of the defect and the magnitude of the applied magnetic field, the skyrmion deforms by either shri…
We have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of graphene nanodisks (nanosize triangular graphene) as well as electromechanical properties of graphene nanojunctions. Nanodisks are nanomagnets made of graphene, which are robust against perturbation such as impurities and lattice defects, where the ferromagnetic order is assured by Lieb's theorem. We can generate a spin current by spin filter, and manipulate it by a spin valve, a spin switch and other spintronic devices made of graphene nanodisks. We have analyzed nanodisk arrays, which have multi-degenerate perfect flat bands and are …
Magnetic phase transitions are a test bed for exploring the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, which become even more complex when topological constraints are involved. In particular, the investigation of skyrmions and skyrmion lattices offers insight into fundamental processes of topological-charge creation and annihilation upon changing the magnetic state. Nonetheless, the exact physical mechanisms behind these phase transitions remain unresolved. Here, we have systematically compared ultra-thin films with isotropic and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (D…
Magnetic skyrmions are spin swirling solitonic defects that can play a major role in information technology. Their future in applications and devices hinges on their efficient manipulation and detection. Here, we explore from ab-initio their nature as magnetic inhomongeities in an otherwise unperturbed magnetic material, Fe layer covered by a thin Pd film and deposited on top of Ir(111) surface. The presence of skyrmions triggers scattering processes, from which Friedel oscillations emerge. The latter mediate interactions among skyrmions or between skyrmions and other potential surrounding def…
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations in ferromagnets, which have the topological number $Q=\pm 1$, and hence show the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) due to the Magnus force effect originating from the topology. Here, we propose the counterpart of the magnetic skyrmion in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) system, that is, the AFM skyrmion, which is topologically protected but without showing the SkHE. Two approaches for creating the AFM skyrmion have been described based on micromagnetic lattice simulations: (i) by injecting a vertical spin-polarized current to a nanodisk with th…
Magnetic skyrmions are the self-organized topological spin textures behaving like particles. Because of their fast creation and typically long lifetime, experimental verification of skyrmion's creation/annihilation processes has been challenging. Here we successfully track skyrmions dynamics in defect-introduced Co9Zn9Mn2, by using pump-probe Lorentz transmission electron microscope. Following the nanosecond-photothermal excitation, we resolve 160-nm-skyrmion's proliferation at <1 ns, contraction at 5 ns, drift from 10 ns to 4 microsecond and coalescence at 5 microsecond. These motions relay t…
A theoretical study on the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmion is indispensable for revealing the underlying physics and understanding the numerical and experimental observations. In this work, we present a reliable theoretical treatment of the spin current induced motion of an AFM skyrmion in the absence and presence of pinning defect. For an ideal AFM system free of defect, the skyrmion motion velocity as a function of the intrinsic parameters can be derived, based on the concept that the skyrmion profile agrees well with the 360 domain wall formula, leading to an explicit descri…
The chiral magnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ hosts a skyrmion lattice, that may be equivalently described as a superposition of plane waves or lattice of particle-like topological objects. A thermal gradient may break up the skyrmion lattice and induce rotating domains raising the question which of these scenarios better describes the violent dynamics at the domain boundaries. Here we show that in an inhomogeneous temperature gradient caused by illumination in a Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscope different parts of the skyrmion lattice can be set into motion with different angular velocities. Tr…
A microscopic description of (baby)skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets is derived from a scattering theory of collective (neutral) spin modes by a bare quasiparticle. We start by mapping the low lying spectrum of spin waves in the uniform ferromagnet onto that of free moving spin excitons, and then we study their scattering by the defect of charge. In the presence of this disturbance, the local spin stiffness varies in space, and we translate it into an inhomogeneus metric in the Hilbert space supporting the excitons. An attractive potencial is then required to preserve the symmetry under g…

Magnetic skyrmions are intriguing topological spin textures that promise future high-density spintronic devices. The creation of magnetic skyrmions has been understood based on the energetics of skyrmions, but the detailed dynamic process of the skyrmion creation remains unclear. Here topological evolution in conversion from uneven domains to Néel-skyrmions is investigated using micromagnetic simulations. We find that, rather than the overall topological charge, annihilation of novel topological defects, i.e., recently suggested domain wall skyrmions, dominantly govern the skyrmion creation pr…
Novel types of barrel-shaped chiral skyrmions can exist as isolated topological defects or as bound states in magnetic nanolayers with intrinsic and surface/interface induced chirality. The equilibrium parameters of chiral modulations calculated as functions of applied fields, layer thicknesses, and values of surface and volume uniaxial anisotropies allow to find optimal parameters for skyrmionic states in magnetic nanolayers. Our findings also show that in cholesteric cells with homeotropic anchoring smooth skyrmionic textures can be induced as an intriguing alternative to common disclination…
Controlling electric and magnetic properties of matter by laser beams is actively explored in the broad region of condensed matter physics, including spintronics and magneto-optics. Here we theoretically propose an application of optical and electron vortex beams carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum to chiral ferro- and antiferro- magnets. We analyze the time evolution of spins in chiral magnets under irradiation of vortex beams, by using the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We show that beam-driven nonuniform temperature lead to a class of ring-shaped magnetic defects, what…
Magnetic skyrmions hold promise for spintronic devices. To explore the dynamical properties of skyrmions in devices, a nanoscale method to image spin textures in response to a stimulus is essential. Here, we apply a technique for operando electrical current pulsing of chiral magnetic devices in a Lorentz transmission electron microscope. In ferromagnetic multilayers with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), we study the creation and annihilation of skyrmions localized by point-like pinning sites due to defects. Using a combination of experimental and micromagnetic techniques, w…
We propose that topological spin currents flowing in topologically non-trivial magnetic textures, such as magnetic skyrmions and vortices, produce an intrinsic non-adiabatic torque of the form ${\bf T}_t\sim [(\partial_x{\bf m}\times\partial_y{\bf m})\cdot{\bf m}]\partial_y{\bf m}$. We show that this torque, which is absent in one-dimensional domain walls and/or non-topological textures, is responsible for the enhanced non-adiabaticity parameter observed in magnetic vortices compared to one-dimensional textures. The impact of this torque on the motion of magnetic skyrmions is expected to be cr…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial nanoscale objects. Their topology, which originates in their chiral domain wall winding, governs their unique response to a motion-inducing force. When subjected to an electrical current, the chiral winding of the spin texture leads to a deflection of the skyrmion trajectory, characterized by an angle with respect to the applied force direction. This skyrmion Hall angle was believed to be skyrmion diameter-dependent. In contrast, our experimental study finds that within the plastic flow regime the skyrmion Hall angle is diameter-independent. At …
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like chiral spin textures found in a magnetic film with out-of-planeanisotropy and are considered to be potential candidates as information carriers in next generationdata storage devices. Despite intense research into the nature of skyrmions and their dynamic prop-erties, there are several key challenges that still need to be addressed. In particular, the outstandingissues are the reproducible generation, stabilization and confinement of skyrmions at room tempera-ture. Here, we present a method for the capture of nanometer sized magnetic skyrmions in an arrayof…
We formulate a theory of skyrmion and antiskyrmion generation using magnetic field and charge current pulses. We show that the topological defect can be created at an edge of a system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) as well as at a boundary between regions with different DMI. We consider both perpendicular and in-plane (also known as magnetic bimerons) versions of skyrmions and antiskyrmions. We show that the magnetization twist in the vicinity of an edge or a boundary is described by a kink solution, the presence of which can instigate the generation of topological defects. We st…
We compute annihilation rates of metastable magnetic skyrmions using a form of Langer's theory in the intermediate-to-high damping (IHD) regime. For a Néel skyrmion, a Bloch skyrmion, and an antiskyrmion, we look at two possible paths to annihilation: collapse and escape through a boundary. We also study the effects of a curved vs. a flat boundary, a second skyrmion and a non-magnetic defect. We find that the skyrmion's internal modes play a dominant role in the thermally activated transitions compared to the spin-wave excitations and that the relative contribution of internal modes depends on…
Curvature effects are important for a proper description of the properties of magnetic systems. In this paper the exchange and dipolar energy of vortices on a paraboloidal shell is studied. Using analytical calculations it is shown that the in-plane component of vortices has larger energy on a paraboloidal shell than in a planar disk with same thickness. On the other hand, the dipolar energy associated to the vortex core diminishes if the vortex core is on a paraboloidal surface. This reduction in the dipolar energy may cause a vortex pinning mechanism by a paraboloidal shaped defect in a plan…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters such as disorder, defects or external stimuli, on the long-range spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the skyrmion lattice. Here, using a large (7.3x7.3μm$^{2}$) single crystal nano-slice of Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, we image up to 70,000 skyrmions, by means of cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy as a function of the applied magne…
