We show that the traveling salesman problem (TSP) and its many variants may be modeled as functional optimization problems over a graph. In this formulation, all vertices and arcs of the graph are functionals; i.e., a mapping from a space of measurable functions to the field of real numbers. Many variants of the TSP, such as those with neighborhoods, with forbidden neighborhoods, with time-windows and with profits, can all be framed under this construct. In sharp contrast to their discrete-optimization counterparts, the modeling constructs presented in this paper represent a fundamentally new domain of analysis and computation for TSPs and their variants. Beyond its apparent mathematical unification of a class of problems in graph theory, the main advantage of the new approach is that it facilitates the modeling of certain application-specific problems in their home space of measurable functions. Consequently, certain elements of economic system theory such as dynamical models and continuous-time cost/profit functionals can be directly incorporated in the new optimization problem formulation. Furthermore, subtour elimination constraints, prevalent in discrete optimization formulations, are naturally enforced through continuity requirements. The price for the new modeling framework is nonsmooth functionals. Although a number of theoretical issues remain open in the proposed mathematical framework, we demonstrate the computational viability of the new modeling constructs over a sample set of problems to illustrate the rapid production of end-to-end TSP solutions to extensively-constrained practical problems.

The Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP) is an extension of the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), where the node set is partitioned into clusters, and the objective is to find the shortest cycle visiting each cluster exactly once. In this paper, we present a new hybrid Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm for the symmetric GTSP. The proposed algorithm is a modification of a simple ACS for the TSP improved by an efficient GTSP-specific local search procedure. Our extensive computational experiments show that the use of the local search procedure dramatically improves the perfor…
Generalized traveling salesman problem (GTSP) is an extension of classical traveling salesman problem (TSP), which is a combinatorial optimization problem and an NP-hard problem. In this paper, an efficient discrete state transition algorithm (DSTA) for GTSP is proposed, where a new local search operator named \textit{K-circle}, directed by neighborhood information in space, has been introduced to DSTA to shrink search space and strengthen search ability. A novel robust update mechanism, restore in probability and risk in probability (Double R-Probability), is used in our work to escape from l…
This paper presents a powerful genetic algorithm(GA) to solve the traveling salesman problem (TSP). To construct a powerful GA, I use edge swapping(ES) with a local search procedure to determine good combinations of building blocks of parent solutions for generating even better offspring solutions. Experimental results on well studied TSP benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed GA is competitive in finding very high quality solutions on instances with up to 16,862 cities.

Using an enhanced Self-Organizing Map method, we provided suboptimal solutions to the Traveling Salesman Problem. Besides, we employed hyperparameter tuning to identify the most critical features in the algorithm. All improvements in the benchmark work brought consistent results and may inspire future efforts to improve this algorithm and apply it to different problems.
The efficiency and dynamism of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, present substantial application opportunities in several industries in the last years. Notably, the logistic companies gave close attention to these vehicles envisioning reduce delivery time and operational cost. A variant of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) called Flying Sidekick Traveling Salesman Problem (FSTSP) was introduced involving drone-assisted parcel delivery. The drone is launched from the truck, proceeds to deliver parcels to a customer and then is recovered by the truck in a third location. While the d…

In this paper we present a new population based metaheuristic called the fixed set search (FSS). The proposed approach represents a method of adding a learning mechanism to the greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP). The basic concept of FSS is to avoid focusing on specific high quality solutions but on parts or elements that such solutions have. This is done through fixing a set of elements that exist in such solutions and dedicating computational effort to finding near optimal solutions for the underlying subproblem. The simplicity of implementing the proposed method is illustra…
This paper further defines the class of fragment constructive heuristics used to compute feasible solutions for the Traveling Salesman Problem into arc-greedy and node-greedy subclasses. Since these subclasses of heuristics can create subtours, two known methodologies for subtour elimination on symmetric instances are reviewed and are expanded to cover asymmetric problem instances. This paper introduces a third novel methodology, the Greedy Tracker, and compares it to both known methodologies. Computational results are generated across multiple symmetric and asymmetric instances. The results d…

The Clustered Traveling Salesman Problem (CTSP) is a variant of the popular Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) arising from a number of real-life applications. In this work, we explore a transformation approach that solves the CTSP by converting it to the well-studied TSP. For this purpose, we first investigate a technique to convert a CTSP instance to a TSP and then apply powerful TSP solvers (including exact and heuristic solvers) to solve the resulting TSP instance. We want to answer the following questions: How do state-of-the-art TSP solvers perform on clustered instances converted from the…

The Clustered Traveling Salesman Problem with a Prespecified Order on the Clusters, a variant of the well-known traveling salesman problem is studied in literature. In this problem, delivery locations are divided into clusters with different urgency levels and more urgent locations must be visited before less urgent ones. However, this could lead to an inefficient route in terms of traveling cost. This priority-oriented constraint can be relaxed by a rule called d-relaxed priority that provides a trade-off between transportation cost and emergency level. Our research proposes two approaches to…
We present a self-learning approach that combines deep reinforcement learning and Monte Carlo tree search to solve the traveling salesman problem. The proposed approach has two advantages. First, it adopts deep reinforcement learning to compute the value functions for decision, which removes the need of hand-crafted features and labelled data. Second, it uses Monte Carlo tree search to select the best policy by comparing different value functions, which increases its generalization ability. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs favorably against other methods in small-to-…

Traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a well-known in computing field. There are many researches to improve the genetic algorithm for solving TSP. In this paper, we propose two new crossover operators and new mechanism of combination crossover operators in genetic algorithm for solving TSP. We experimented on TSP instances from TSP-Lib and compared the results of proposed algorithm with genetic algorithm (GA), which used MSCX. Experimental results show that, our proposed algorithm is better than the GA using MSCX on the min, mean cost values.
The Traveling Salesman Problem is one of the most intensively studied combinatorial optimization problems due both to its range of real-world applications and its computational complexity. When combined with the Set Covering Problem, it raises even more issues related to tractability and scalability. We study a combined Set Covering and Traveling Salesman problem and provide a mixed integer programming formulation to solve the problem. Motivated by applications where the optimal policy needs to be updated on a regular basis and repetitively solving this via MIP can be computationally expensive…

We address the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a famous NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. And we propose a variable strategy reinforced approach, denoted as VSR-LKH, which combines three reinforcement learning methods (Q-learning, Sarsa and Monte Carlo) with the well-known TSP algorithm, called Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH). VSR-LKH replaces the inflexible traversal operation in LKH, and lets the program learn to make choice at each search step by reinforcement learning. Experimental results on 111 TSP benchmarks from the TSPLIB with up to 85,900 cities demonstrate the excellent per…

A well known N P-hard problem called the Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP) is considered. In GTSP the nodes of a complete undirected graph are partitioned into clusters. The objective is to find a minimum cost tour passing through exactly one node from each cluster. An exact exponential time algorithm and an effective meta-heuristic algorithm for the problem are presented. The meta-heuristic proposed is a modified Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm called Reinforcing Ant Colony System (RACS) which introduces new correction rules in the ACS algorithm. Computational results are report…

In recent years, there have been a plethora of novel approaches for approximate solutions ranging from simplistic greedy to cooperative distributed algorithms derived from artificial intelligence. In this paper, we perform an evaluation and analysis of cornerstone algorithms for the Euclidean TSP. We evaluate greedy, 2-opt, and genetic algorithms.…
The cutting plane method is an augmentative constrained optimization procedure that is often used with continuous-domain optimization techniques such as linear and convex programs. We investigate the viability of a similar idea within message passing -- which produces integral solutions -- in the context of two combinatorial problems: 1) For Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), we propose a factor-graph based on Held-Karp formulation, with an exponential number of constraint factors, each of which has an exponential but sparse tabular form. 2) For graph-partitioning (a.k.a., community mining) usi…
Word embeddings are one of the most fundamental technologies used in natural language processing. Existing word embeddings are high-dimensional and consume considerable computational resources. In this study, we propose WordTour, unsupervised one-dimensional word embeddings. To achieve the challenging goal, we propose a decomposition of the desiderata of word embeddings into two parts, completeness and soundness, and focus on soundness in this paper. Owing to the single dimensionality, WordTour is extremely efficient and provides a minimal means to handle word embeddings. We experimentally con…

We present NeuroLKH, a novel algorithm that combines deep learning with the strong traditional heuristic Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH) for solving Traveling Salesman Problem. Specifically, we train a Sparse Graph Network (SGN) with supervised learning for edge scores and unsupervised learning for node penalties, both of which are critical for improving the performance of LKH. Based on the output of SGN, NeuroLKH creates the edge candidate set and transforms edge distances to guide the searching process of LKH. Extensive experiments firmly demonstrate that, by training one model on a wide range …
This article presents a new algorithm which is a modified version of the elite ant system (EAS) algorithm. The new version utilizes an effective criterion for escaping from the local optimum points. In contrast to the classical EAC algorithms, the proposed algorithm uses only a global updating, which will increase pheromone on the edges of the best (i.e. the shortest) route and will at the same time decrease the amount of pheromone on the edges of the worst (i.e. the longest) route. In order to assess the efficiency of the new algorithm, some standard traveling salesman problems (TSPs) were st…

In this short communication, we observe that the Graphical Traveling Salesman Polyhedron is the intersection of the positive orthant with the Minkowski sum of the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope and the polar of the metric cone. This follows almost trivially from known facts. There are two reasons why we find this observation worth communicating none-the-less: It is very surprising; it helps to understand the relationship between these two important families of polyhedra.
The Steiner Traveling Salesman Problem (STSP) is a variant of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) that is particularly suitable when dealing with sparse networks, such as road networks. The standard integer programming formulation of the STSP has an exponential number of constraints, just like the standard formulation of the TSP. On the other hand, there exist several known {\em compact} formulations of the TSP, i.e., formulations with a polynomial number of both variables and constraints. In this paper, we show that some of these compact formulations can be adapted to the STSP. We also brief…

This paper presents a new method for integrated time-optimal routing and trajectory optimization of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Our approach extends the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem by accounting for the limited maneuverability of the UAVs due to their kinematic properties. To this end, we allow each waypoint to be traversed with a discretized velocity as well as a discretized flight direction and compute time-optimal trajectories to determine the travel time costs for each edge. We refer to this novel optimization problem as the Trajectory-based Traveling Salesman Pro…
The Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope $S_n$ for a fixed number $n$ of cities is a face of the corresponding Graphical Traveling Salesman Polyhedron $P_n$. This has been used to study facets of $S_n$ using $P_n$ as a tool. In this paper, we study the operation of "rotating" (or "lifting") valid inequalities for $S_n$ to obtain a valid inequalities for $P_n$. As an application, we describe a surprising relationship between (a) the parsimonious property of relaxations of the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope and (b) a connectivity property of the ridge graph of the Graphical Traveling Sal…
In this paper, we present an approach to optimizing the last-mile delivery route of a truck using coordination with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). First, a traveling salesman problem is formulated to determine the truck's route. Then, a scheduling problem is formulated to determined the routes for the UAVs. A genetic algorithm is used to solve these problems, and simulated results are presented.
One of the most fundamental results in combinatorial optimization is the polynomial-time 3/2-approximation algorithm for the metric traveling salesman problem. It was presented by Christofides in 1976 and is well known as "the Christofides algorithm". Recently, some authors started calling it "Christofides-Serdyukov algorithm", pointing out that it was published independently in the USSR in 1978. We provide some historic background on Serdyukov's findings and a translation of his article from Russian into English.

The Dubins Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) has generated significant interest over the last decade due to its occurrence in several civil and military surveillance applications. Currently, there is no algorithm that can find an optimal solution to the problem. In addition, relaxing the motion constraints and solving the resulting Euclidean TSP (ETSP) provides the only lower bound available for the problem. However, in many problem instances, the lower bound computed by solving the ETSP is far below the cost of the feasible solutions obtained by some well-known algorithms for the DTSP. This a…
We develop an asymptotic approximation and bounds for the traveling salesman problem with time slots, i.e. when the time windows of points to visit are a partition of a given time horizon. Although this problem is relevant in several delivery applications, operational research researchers did not pay close attention to it, contrary to the extensively studied general formulation with time windows. Exploiting the specificity of this problem allows to solve more efficiently instances which may be hard to solve by specifically designed algorithms for the traveling salesman problem with time window…
We consider a new semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation of the symmetric traveling salesman problem (TSP) that may be obtained via an SDP relaxation of the more general quadratic assignment problem (QAP). We show that the new relaxation dominates the one in [D. Cvetkovic, M. Cangalovic, and V. Kovacevic-Vujcic, Semidefinite programming methods for the symmetric traveling salesman problem, in Proc. 7th Int. IPCO Conference, Springer, London, 1999, pp. 126--136]. Unlike the bound of Cvetkovic et al., the new SDP bound is not dominated by the Held-Karp linear programming bound, or vice versa.

We study a semidefinite programming relaxation of the traveling salesman problem introduced by de Klerk, Pasechnik, and Sotirov [8] and show that their relaxation has an unbounded integrality gap. In particular, we give a family of instances such that the gap increases linearly with $n$. To obtain this result, we search for feasible solutions within a highly structured class of matrices; the problem of finding such solutions reduces to finding feasible solutions for a related linear program, which we do analytically. The solutions we find imply the unbounded integrality gap. Further, they impl…
Let $X_1, X_2, \dots, X_n$ be independent and uniformly distributed random variables in the unit square $[0,1]^2$ and let $L(X_1, \dots, X_n)$ be the length of the shortest traveling salesman path through these points. In 1959, Beardwood, Halton $\&$ Hammersley proved the existence of a universal constant $β$ such that $$ \lim_{n \rightarrow \infty}{n^{-1/2}L(X_1, \dots, X_n)} = β\qquad \mbox{almost surely.}$$ The best bounds for $β$ are still the ones originally established by Beardwood, Halton $\&$ Hammersley $0.625 \leq β\leq 0.922$. We slightly improve both upper and lower bounds.
This study investigates the problem of traveling salesman problem with circular neighborhood (TSPCN). Instead of cities there are circles and each point on circle can be a potential visiting node. The problem is to find the minimum length Hamiltonian cycle connecting the circles. Among the various real life applications of the problem, this paper concentrates on robot path planning for the laser welding robot, and data collection in a wireless sensor network by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The TSPCN is formulated as a nonlinear model, the objective function is linearized, and as a solution…
In this paper we consider the Recoverable Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Here the task is to find two tours simultaneously, such that the intersection between the tours is at least a given minimum size, while the sum of travel distances with respect to two different distance metrics is minimized. Building upon the classic double-tree method, we derive a 4-approximation algorithm for the RecoverableTSP. We also show that if the required size of the intersection between the tours is constant, a 2-approximation guarantee can be achieved, even if more than two tours need to be constructed. We d…
This paper presents a set of new formulations for the Flying Sidekick Traveling Salesman Problem, where a truck and a drone cooperate to delivery parcels to customers minimizing the completion time. The new formulations improve the results of the literature by solving to optimality several benchmark instances for which an optimal solution was previously unknown. A matheuristic algorithm, strongly based on the new models, is also discussed. Experimental results show that this method is able to provide good quality solutions in short time even for the larger instances, on which the mathematical …
The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a fundamental problem in combinatorial optimization. Several semidefinite programming relaxations have been proposed recently that exploit a variety of mathematical structures including, e.g., algebraic connectivity, permutation matrices, and association schemes. The main results of this paper are twofold. First, de Klerk and Sotirov [9] present an SDP based on permutation matrices and symmetry reduction; they show that it is incomparable to the subtour elimination linear program, but generally dominates it on small instances. We provide a family of \emp…

Experiments are carried out to test the performance of the strategy, and comparisons with simulated annealing and ant colony optimization have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed al…
In this paper we consider a problem related to deliveries assisted by an unmanned aerial vehicle, so-called drone. In particular we consider the Flying Sidekick Traveling Salesman Problem, where a truck and a drone cooperate to delivery parcels to customers minimizing the completion time. We propose three-indexed and two-indexed formulations and a set of inequalities that can be implemented in a branch-and-cut fashion. We could find the optimal solutions for most of the literature instances. Moreover, we consider two …
The maximum traveling salesman problem (Max TSP) consists of finding a Hamiltonian cycle with the maximum total weight of the edges in a given complete weighted graph. This problem is APX-hard in the general metric case but admits polynomial-time approximation schemes in the geometric setting, when the edge weights are induced by a vector norm in fixed-dimensional real space. We propose the first approximation scheme for Max TSP in an arbitrary metric space of fixed doubling dimension. The proposed algorithm implements an efficient PTAS which, for any fixed $\varepsilon\in(0,1)$, computes a $(…
In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a list of cities and the distances between them are given. The goal is to find the shortest possible route that visits each city exactly once and returns to the original city. The TSP has a wide range of applications in many different industries including, but not limited to, optimizing mail and shipping routes, guiding industrial machines, mapping genomes, and improving autonomous vehicles. For centuries, traveling salesmen, politicians, and circuit preachers have tackled their own versions of the problem. Within the last century, the TSP has become on…
Neighborhood search is a cornerstone of state-of-the-art traveling salesman and vehicle routing metaheuristics. While neighborhood exploration procedures are well developed for problems with individual services, their counterparts for one-to-one pickup-and-delivery problems have been more scarcely studied. A direct extension of classic neighborhoods is often inefficient or complex due to the necessity of jointly considering service pairs. To circumvent these issues, we introduce major improvements to existing neighborhood searches for the pickup-and-delivery traveling salesman problem and new …

We present a set of matheuristic methods for the problem. The new approaches are validated via an experimental campaign on two sets of benchmarks available in the literature. It is shown that the approaches we propose perform very well…
We consider the time-dependent traveling salesman problem (TDTSP), a generalization of the asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP) to incorporate time-dependent cost functions. In our model, the costs of an arc can change arbitrarily over time (and do not only dependent on the position in the tour). The TDTSP turns out to be structurally more difficult than the TSP. We prove it is NP-hard and APX-hard even if a generalized version of the triangle inequality is satisfied. In particular, we show that even the computation of one-trees becomes intractable in the case of time-dependent costs. …
We propose a combination of a bounding procedure and gradient descent method for solving the Dubins traveling salesman problem, that is, the problem of finding a shortest curvature-constrained tour through a finite number of points in the euclidean plane. In this paper, we focus on the case where any two points are separated by at least four times the minimum turning radius, which is most interesting from a practical sta…
