The paper proposes a polynomial formula for solution quadratic congruences in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. This formula gives the correct answer for quadratic residue and zeroes for quadratic nonresidue. The general form of the formula for $p=3 \;\rm{mod}\,4$, $p=5 \;\rm{mod}\,8$ and for $p=9 \;\rm{mod}\,16$ are suggested.
We investigate the density of integer solutions to certain binary inhomogeneous quadratic congruences and use this information to detect almost primes on a singular del Pezzo surface of degree 6.
The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for a special Weyl linear form. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered a strong estimate for this Weyl linear form when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth established an analogous but weaker bound when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We obtain a stronger estimate for the Weyl linear form for quadratics of positive discriminants.
We consider a system of homogeneous quadratic forms with congruence conditions in $n\geq 3$ variables and prove the existence of two linearly independent integral solutions of bounded height. We also show the existence of small height integral zeros of this system avoiding a given set of hyperplanes.
We estimate the deviation of the number of solutions of the congruence $$ m^2-n^2 \equiv c \pmod q, \qquad 1 \le m \le M, \ 1\le n \le N, $$ from its expected value on average over $c=1, ..., q$. This estimate is motivated by the recently established by D. R. Heath-Brown connection between the distibution of solution to this congruence and the pair correlation problem for the fractional parts of the quadratic function $αk^2$, $k=1,2,...$ with a real $α$.
In this paper, we are interested in the interplay between integral ternary quadratic forms and class numbers. This is partially motivated by a question of Petersson.
We characterize the generating function of the number of representations described in the title in terms of the theory of modular forms. Appealing to this characterization we obtain explicit formulas for the representation numbers as examples.
Let $Q(x,y,z)$ be an integral quadratic form with determinant coprime to some modulus $q$. We show that $q\mid Q$ for some non-zero integer vector $(x,y,z)$ of length $O(q^{5/8+\varepsilon})$, for any fixed $\varepsilon>0$. Without the coprimality condition on the determinant one could not achieve an exponent below $2/3$. The proof uses a bound for short character sums involving binary quadratic forms, which extends a result of Chang.
A classical result in number theory is Dirichlet's theorem on the density of primes in an arithmetic progression. We prove a similar result for numbers with exactly k prime factors for k>1. Building upon a proof by E.M. Wright in 1954, we compute the natural density of such numbers where each prime satisfies a congruence condition. As an application, we obtain the density of squarefree n not greater than x with k prime factors such that a fixed quadratic equation has exactly 2^k solutions modulo n.
In this paper, near-miss identities for the number of representations of some integral ternary quadratic forms with congruence conditions are found and proven. The genus and spinor genus of the corresponding lattice cosets are then classified. Finally, a complete genus and spinor genus classification for all conductor 2 lattice cosets of 2-adically unimodular lattices is given.
We show that for a fixed integer $n \neq \pm2$, the congruence $x^2 + nx \pm 1 \equiv 0 \pmodα$ has the solution $β$ with $0 < β< α$ if and only if $α/β$ has a continued fraction expansion with sequence of quotients having one of a finite number of possible asymmetry types. This generalizes the old theorem that a rational number $α/β> 1$ in lowest terms has a symmetric continued fraction precisely when $β^2 \equiv \pm 1 \pmodα$.
For each positive integer $n$, let $g_Δ(n)$ be the smallest positive integer $g$ such that every complete quadratic polynomial in $n$ variables which can be represented by a sum of odd squares is represented by a sum of at most $g$ odd squares. In this paper, we analyze $g_Δ(n)$ by studying representations of integral quadratic forms by sums of squares with certain congruence condition. We prove that the growth of $g_Δ(n)$ is at most an exponential of $\sqrt{n}$, which is the same as the best known upper bound on the $g$-invariants of the original quadratic Waring's problem. We also determine …
We establish a congruence formula between $p$-adic logarithms of Heegner points for two elliptic curves with the same mod $p$ Galois representation. As a first application, we use the congruence formula when $p=2$ to explicitly construct many quadratic twists of analytic rank zero (resp. one) for a wide class of elliptic curves $E$. We show that the number of twists of $E$ up to twisting discriminant $X$ of analytic rank zero (resp. one) is $\gg X/\log^{5/6}X$, improving the current best general bound towards Goldfeld's conjecture due to Ono--Skinner (resp. Perelli--Pomykala). We also prove th…
Let $N_k(n,r,\boldsymbol{a})$ denote the number of incongruent solutions of the quadratic congruence $a_1x_1^2+\ldots+a_kx_k^2\equiv n$ (mod $r$), where $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1,\ldots,a_k)\in {\Bbb Z}^k$, $n\in {\Bbb Z}$, $r\in {\Bbb N}$. We give short direct proofs for certain less known compact formulas on $N_k(n,r,\boldsymbol{a})$, valid for $r$ odd, which go back to the work of Minkowski, Bachmann and Cohen. We also deduce some other related identities and asymptotic formulas which do not seem to appear in the literature.
We investigate the average number of solutions of certain quadratic congruences. As an application, we establish Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface whose singularity type is A_5+A_1.
For any distinct two primes $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }4)$, let $h(-p_1)$, $h(-p_2)$ and $h(p_1p_2)$ be the class numbers of the quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_2})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p_1p_2})$, respectively. Let $ω_{p_1p_2}:=(1+\sqrt{p_1p_2})/2$ and let $Ψ(ω_{p_1p_2})$ be the Hirzebruch sum of $ω_{p_1p_2}$. We show that $h(-p_1)h(-p_2)\equiv h(p_1p_2)Ψ(ω_{p_1p_2})/n$ $(\text{mod }8)$, where $n=6$ (respectively, $n=2$) if $\min\{p_1,p_2\}>3$ (respectively, otherwise). We also consider the real quadratic order with conductor $2$ in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqr…
We investigate the homology of a congruence subgroup Gamma of SL_3(Z) with coefficients in the Steinberg modules St(Q^3) and St(E^3), where E is a real quadratic field and the coefficients are Q. By Borel-Serre duality, H_0(Gamma, St(Q^3)) is isomorphic to H^3(Gamma,Q). Taking the image of the connecting homomorphism H_1(Gamma, St(E^3)/St(Q^3)) \to H_0(Gamma, St(Q^3)), followed by the Borel-Serre isomorphism, we obtain a naturally defined Hecke-stable subspace H(Gamma,E) of H^3(Gamma,Q). We conjecture that H(Gamma,E) is independent of E and consists of the cuspidal cohomology H_cusp^3(Gamma,Q)…
Let $Q(x,y)$ be a quadratic form with discriminant $D\neq 0$. We obtain non trivial upper bound estimates for the number of solutions of the congruence $Q(x,y)\equivλ\pmod{p}$, where $p$ is a prime and $x,y$ lie in certain intervals of length $M$, under the assumption that $Q(x,y)-λ$ is an absolutely irreducible polynomial modulo $p$. In particular we prove that the number of solutions to this congruence is $M^{o(1)}$ when $M\ll p^{1/4}$. These estimates generalize a previous result by Cilleruelo and Garaev on the particular congruence $xy\equiv λ\pmod{p}$.
Consider the linear congruence equation $x_1+\ldots+x_k \equiv b\,(\text{mod } n)$ for $b,n\in\mathbb{Z}$. By $(a,b)_s$, we mean the largest $l^s\in\mathbb{N}$ which divides $a$ and $b$ simultaneously. For each $d_j|n$, define $\mathcal{C}_{j,s} = \{1\leq x\leq n^s | (x,n^s)_s = d^s_j\}$. Bibak et al. gave a formula using Ramanujan sums for the number of solutions of the above congruence equation with some gcd restrictions on $x_i$. We generalize their result with generalized gcd restrictions on $x_i$ by proving that for the above linear congruence, the number of solutions is $$\frac{1}{n^s}\s…
Under relatively mild and natural conditions, we establish an integral period relations for the (real or imaginary) quadratic base change of an elliptic cusp form. This answers a conjecture of Hida regarding the {\it congruence number} controlling the congruences between this base change and other eigenforms which are not base change. As a corollary, we establish the Bloch-Kato conjecture for adjoint modular Galois representations twisted by an even quadratic character. In the odd case, we formulate a conjecture linking the degree two topological period attached to the base change Bianchi modu…
Let F be the imaginary quadratic field of discriminant -3 and OF its ring of integers. Let Gamma be the arithmetic group GL_3 (OF), and for any ideal n subset OF let Gamma_0 (n) be the congruence subgroup of level n consisting of matrices with bottom row (0,0,*) bmod n. In this paper we compute the cohomology spaces H^{nu - 1} (Gamma_0 (n); C) as a Hecke module for various levels n, where nu is the virtual cohomological dimension of Gamma. This represents the first attempt at such computations for GL_3 over an imaginary quadratic field, and complements work of Grunewald--Helling--Mennicke and …
For a congruence subgroup $Γ$, we define the notion of $Γ$-equivalence on binary quadratic forms which is the same as proper equivalence if $Γ= \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. We develop a theory on $Γ$-equivalence such as the finiteness of $Γ$-reduced forms, the isomorphism between $Γ_0(N)$-form class group and the ideal class group, $N$-representation of integers, and $N$-genus of binary quadratic forms. As an application, we deal with representations of integers by binary quadratic forms under certain congruence condition on variables.
Let $p>5$ be a fixed prime and assume that $α_1,α_2,α_3$ are coprime to $p$. We study the asymptotic behavior of small solutions of congruences of the form $α_1x_1^2+α_2x_2^2+α_3x_3^2\equiv 0\bmod{q}$ with $q=p^n$, where $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_1x_2x_3,p)=1$. (In fact, we consider a smoothed version of this problem.) If $α_1,α_2,α_3$ are fixed and $n\rightarrow \infty$, we establish an asymptotic formula (and thereby the existence of such solutions) under the condition $N\gg q^{1/2+\varepsilon}$. If these coefficients are allowed to vary with $n$, we show that this formula hol…
We study $N$-congruences between quadratic twists of elliptic curves. If $N$ has exactly two distinct prime factors we show that these are parametrised by double covers of certain modular curves. In many, but not all cases, the modular curves in question correspond to the normaliser of a Cartan subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})$. By computing explicit models for these double covers we find all pairs $(N, r)$ such that there exist infinitely many $j$-invariants of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ which are $N$-congruent with power $r$ to a quadratic twist of $E$. We also find an …

Let $F$ be a quadratic form in four variables, let $m\in\mathbb{N}$ and let $\mathbf{k}\in \mathbb{Z}^4$. We count integer solutions to $F(\mathbf{x})=0$ with $\mathbf{x}\equiv \mathbf{k}\:\mathrm{mod}(m)$. One can compare this to the similar problem of counting solutions to $F(\mathbf{x})=0$ without the congruence condition. It turns out that adding the congruence condition sometimes gives a very different main term than the homogeneous case. In particular, there are examples where the number of primitive solutions to the problem is $0$, while the number of unrestricted solutions is nonzero.
Recently, Andrews, Hirschhorn and Sellers have proven congruences modulo 3 for four types of partitions using elementary series manipulations. In this paper, we generalize their congruences using arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.
Let $p>3$ be a prime. In this paper, we obtain the congruences for $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{w(k)\binom{2k}k^3}{(-8)^k},\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{w(k)\binom{2k}k^2\binom{3k}k}{(-192)^k},\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{w(k)\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}}{(-144)^k}\ \text{and} \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{w(k)\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}}{648^k}$$ modulo $p^2$, and partial results for $\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2} \binom{2k}k^3\frac{w(k)}{m^k}$ modulo $p^2$, where $m\in\{1,16,-64,256,-512,4096\}$ and $w(k)\in\{k^2,k^3,\frac 1{k+1},\frac 1{(k+1)^2},\frac 1{(k+1)^3}, \frac 1{2k-1},\frac 1{k+2}\}$.
In a previous work we apply lattice point theorems on hyperbolic spaces obtaining asymptotic formulas for the number of integral representations of negative integers by quadratic and hermitian forms of signature (n,1) lying in Euclidean balls of increasing radius. This formula involves an error term that depends on the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the corresponding congruence hyperbolic manifolds. The aim of this paper is to compare the error term obtained by experimental computations, with the error term mentioned above, for several choices of quadratic and her…
The rank one Gross conjecture for Deligne-Ribet $p$-adic $L$-functions was solved in works of Darmon-Dasgupta-Pollack and Ventullo by the Eisenstein congruence among Hilbert modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to prove an analogue of the Gross conjecture for the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to imaginary quadratic fields via the congruences between CM forms and non-CM forms. The new ingredient is to apply the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg method to construct a non-CM Hida family which is congruent to a Hida family of CM forms at the $1+\varepsilon$ specialization.
We use the arithmetic of ideals in orders to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$ of the polynomial congruence $F(μ) \equiv 0 \pmod m$, $F(X) \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ monic, irreducible and degree $d$. Our parameterization generalizes Gauss's classic parameterization of the roots of quadratic congruences using binary quadratic forms, which had previously only been extended to the cubic polynomial $F(X) = X^3 - 2$. We show that only a special class of ideals are needed to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$, and that in the cubic setting, $d = 3$, general ideals correspond to pairs of roots $μ_1 \pmod{m_1…
Let $p>3$ be a prime and $m,n\in\Bbb Z$ with $p\nmid mn$. Built on the work of Morton, in the paper we prove the uniform congruence: $$&\sum_{x=0}^{p-1}\Big(\frac{x^3+mx+n}p\Big) \equiv {-(-3m)^{\frac{p-1}4} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{-\frac 1{12}}k\binom{-\frac 5{12}}k (\frac{4m^3+27n^2}{4m^3})^k\pmod p&\t{if $4\mid p-1$,} \frac{2m}{9n}(\frac{-3m}p)(-3m)^{\frac{p+1}4} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{-\frac 1{12}}k\binom{-\frac 5{12}}k (\frac{4m^3+27n^2}{4m^3})^k\pmod p&\text{if $4\mid p-3$,}$$ where $(\frac ap)$ is the Legendre symbol. We also establish many congruences for $x\pmod p$, where $x$ is given …
For any positive integer $n$ and variables $a$ and $x$ we define the generalized Legendre polynomial $P_n(a,x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\b ak\b{-1-a}k(\frac{1-x}2)^k$. Let $p$ be an odd prime. In the paper we prove many congruences modulo $p^2$ related to $P_{p-1}(a,x)$. For example, we show that $P_{p-1}(a,x)\e (-1)^{<a>_p}P_{p-1}(a,-x)\mod {p^2}$, where $<a>_p$ is the least nonnegative residue of $a$ modulo $p$. We also generalize some congruences of Zhi-Wei Sun, and determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}k\binom{3k}k{54^{-k}}$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom ak\binom{b-a}k\mod {p^2}$, where $[x]$ is the great…
We define a new congruence relation on the set of integers, leading to a group similar to the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n$. It makes use of a symmetry almost omnipresent in modular multiplications and halves the number of residue classes. Using it, we are able to give an elegant description of some results due to Carl Schick, others are reduced to well-known theorems from algebra and number theory. Many concepts from number theory such as quadratic residues and primitive roots are equally applicable. It brings noticeable advantages in studying powers of odd primes, and in partic…
Sarnak obtained the asymptotic formula of the sum of the class numbers of indefinite binary quadratic forms from the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group. In the present paper, we show several asymptotic formulas of partial sums of the class numbers by using the prime geodesic theorems for the congruence subgroups of the modular group.
In this paper we study a geometric coding algorithm for indefinite binary quadratic forms Q for the congruence subgroup Γ^0(N), with respect to the usual fundamental domain FN, where N is assumed prime. The cycles Q_1, . . ., Q_n that this algorithm produces are such that the the corresponding paths γ_1, . . ., γ_n in the Riemann surface X0(N)(C) have a nice behavior around the elliptic points of order 2.
In the article The third homology of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q})$, Hutchinson determined the structure of $H_{3}\left(\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}),\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{1}{2}\right]\right)$ by expressing it in terms of $K_{3}^{\mathrm{ind}}(\mathbb{Q})\cong \mathbb{Z}/24$ and the scissor congruence group of the residue field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $p$ a prime number. In this paper, we develop further the properties of the refined scissors congruence group in order to extend this result to the case of imaginary quadratic number fields whose ring of integers is a Euclidean domain with respect to the norm.
For a prime $p\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }4)$, let $h(-8p)$ and $h(8p)$ be the class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2p})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2p})$, respectively. Let $Ψ(ξ)$ be the Hirzebruch sum of a quadratic irrational $ξ$. We show that $h(-8p)\equiv h(8p)\Big(Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3-Ψ\big((1+\sqrt{2p})/2\big)/3\Big)$ $(\text{mod }16)$. Also, we show that $h(-8p)\equiv 2h(8p)Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3$ $(\text{mod }8)$ if $p\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }8)$, and $h(-8p)\equiv \big(2h(8p)Ψ(2\sqrt{2p})/3\big)+4$ $(\text{mod }8)$ if $p\equiv 7$ $(\text{mod }8)$.

We construct almost holomorphic and holomorphic modular forms by considering theta series for quadratic forms of signature $(n-1,1)$. We include homogeneous and spherical polynomials in the definition of the theta series (generalizing a construction of the second author) to obtain holomorphic, almost holomorphic and modular theta series. We give a criterion for these series to coincide, enabling us to construct almost holomorphic and holomorphic cusp forms on congruence subgroups of the modular group. Further, we provide numerous explicit examples.
Motivated by a desire to understand the distribution of roots of cubic congruences, we re-derive a parametrization of roots $ν\pmod m$ of $X^3 \equiv 2 \pmod m$ found by Hooley. Although this parametrization does not lead us here to anything towards proving equidistribution of the sequence $\fracν{m} \pmod 1$, we are able to prove spacing results, and then a large sieve type inequality, which we view as analogous to the large sieve inequality for roots of quadratic congruences found by Fouvry and Iwaniec in their proof that there are infinitely many primes of the form $n^2 + p^2$. The parametr…
