Multipartite entanglement, such as witnessed through the quantum Fisher information (QFI), is a crucial resource for quantum technologies, but its experimental certification is highly challenging. Here, we propose an experimentally friendly protocol to measure the QFI. It relies on recording the short-time dynamics of simple observables after a quench from a thermal state, works for spins, bosons, and fermions, and can be implemented in standard cold-atom experiments and other platforms with temporal control over the system Hamiltonian. To showcase the protocol, we simulate it for the one-dimensional Fermi--Hubbard model. Further, we establish a family of bounds connecting the QFI to multipartite mode entanglement for fermionic systems, which enable the detection of multipartite entanglement at sizable temperatures. Our work paves a way to experimentally accessing entanglement for quantum enhanced metrology.
We consider the problem of demonstrating non-Bell-local correlations by performing local measurements in randomly chosen triads, i.e., three mutually unbiased bases, on a multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. Our main interest lies on investigating the feasibility of using these correlations to certify multipartite entanglement in a device-independent setting. In contrast to previous works, our numerical results up to the eight-partite scenario suggest that if each triad is randomly but uniformly chosen according to the Haar measure, one always (except possibly for a set of measure z…
Techniques developed for device-independent characterizations allow one to certify certain physical properties of quantum systems without assuming any knowledge of their internal workings. Such a certification, however, often relies on the employment of device-independent witnesses catered for the particular property of interest. In this work, we consider a one-parameter family of multipartite, two-setting, two-outcome Bell inequalities and demonstrate the extent to which they are suited for the device-independent certification of genuine many-body entanglement (and hence the entanglement dept…
Genuine multipartite entanglement represents the strongest type of entanglement, which is an essential resource for quantum information processing. Standard methods to detect genuine multipartite entanglement, e.g., entanglement witnesses, state tomography, or quantum state verification, require full knowledge of the Hilbert space dimension and precise calibration of measurement devices, which are usually difficult to acquire in an experiment. The most radical way to overcome these problems is to detect entanglement solely based on the Bell-like correlations of measurement outcomes collected i…
Recently [Cavalcanti \textit{et al.} Nat Commun \textbf{6}, 7941 (2015)] proposed a method to certify the presence of entanglement in asymmetric networks, where some users do not have control over the measurements they are performing. Such asymmetry naturally emerges in realistic situtations, such as in cryptographic protocols over quantum networks. Here we implement such "semi-device independent" techniques to experimentally witness all types of entanglement on a three-qubit photonic W state. Furthermore we analise the amount of genuine randomness that can be certified in this scenario from a…
Device independent certification schemes have gained a lot of interest lately, not only for their applications in quantum information tasks but also their implications towards foundations of quantum theory. The strongest form of device independent certification, known as self-testing, often requires for a Bell inequality to be maximally violated by specific quantum states and measurements. In this work, using the techniques developed recently in [S. Sarkar et al., npj Quantum Inf. 7, 151 (2021)], we provide the first self-testing scheme for the multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) st…
Ensuring the correct functioning of quantum error correction (QEC) circuits is crucial to achieve fault tolerance in realistic quantum processors subjected to noise. The first checkpoint for a fully operational QEC circuit is to create genuine multipartite entanglement across all subsystems of physical qubits. We introduce a conditional witnessing technique to certify genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) that is efficient in the number of subsystems and, importantly, robust against experimental noise and imperfections. Specifically, we prove that the detection of entanglement in a linear nu…
Graph states -- one of the most representative families of multipartite entangled states, are important resources for multiparty quantum communication, quantum error correction, and quantum computation. Device-independent certification of highly entangled graph states plays a prominent role in the quantum information processing tasks. Here we have experimentally demonstrated device-independent certification for multipartite graph states, by adopting the robust self-testing scheme based on scalable Bell inequalities. Specifically, the prepared multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state…

We study the multipartite entanglement of a quantum many-body system undergoing a quantum quench. We quantify multipartite entanglement through the quantum Fisher information (QFI) density and we are able to express it after a quench in terms of a generalized response function. For pure state initial conditions and in the thermodynamic limit, we can express the QFI as the fluctuations of an observable computed in the so-called diagonal ensemble. We apply the formalism to the dynamics of a quantum Ising chain after a quench in the transverse field. In this model the asymptotic state is, in almo…
We report dynamical quantum phase transition portrait in the alternating field transverse XY spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by investigating singularities in the Loschmidt echo and the corresponding rate function after a sudden quench of system parameters. Unlike the Ising model, the analysis of Loschmidt echo yields non-uniformly spaced transition times in this model. Comparative study between the equilibrium and the dynamical quantum phase transitions in this case reveals that there are quenches where one occurs without the other, and the regimes where they co-exist. Howev…

Quantum theory predicts that entanglement can also persist in macroscopic physical systems, albeit difficulties to demonstrate it experimentally remain. Recently, significant progress has been achieved and genuine entanglement between up to 2900 atoms was reported. Here we demonstrate 16 million genuinely entangled atoms in a solid-state quantum memory prepared by the heralded absorption of a single photon. We develop an entanglement witness for quantifying the number of genuinely entangled particles based on the collective effect of directed emission combined with the nonclassical nature of t…
The future of quantum communication relies on quantum networks composed by observers sharing multipartite quantum states. The certification of multipartite entanglement will be crucial to the usefulness of these networks. In many real situations it is natural to assume that some observers are more trusted than others in the sense that they have more knowledge of their measurement apparatuses. Here we propose a general method to certify all kinds of multipartite entanglement in this asymmetric scenario and experimentally demonstrate it in an optical experiment. Our results, which can be seen as…
Multipartite entanglement is the key resource allowing quantum devices to outperform their classical counterparts, and entanglement certification is fundamental to assess any quantum advantage. The only scalable certification scheme relies on entanglement witnessing, typically effective only for special entangled states. Here we focus on finite sets of measurements on quantum states (hereafter called quantum data); and we propose an approach which, given a particular spatial partitioning of the system of interest, can effectively ascertain whether or not the data set is compatible with a separ…

The celebrated Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen quantum steering has a complex structure in the multipartite scenario. We show that a naively defined criterion for multipartite steering allows, like in Bell nonlocality, for a contradictory effect whereby local operations could create steering seemingly from scratch. Nevertheless, neither in steering nor in Bell nonlocality has this effect been experimentally confirmed. Operational consistency is reestablished by presenting a suitable redefinition: there is a subtle form of steering already present at the start, and it is only exposed -- as opposed to c…
It is well known that the notions of spatial locality are often lost in quantum systems with long-range interactions, as exhibited by the emergence of phases with exotic long-range order and faster propagation of quantum correlations. We demonstrate here that such induced ``quasinonlocal" effects do not necessarily translate to growth of global entanglement in the quantum system. By investigating the ground and quenched states of the variable-range, spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we observe that the genuine multiparty entanglement in the system can either increase or counterintuitively dimin…
We demonstrate that multipartite entanglement, witnessed by the quantum Fisher information (QFI), can characterize topological quantum phase transitions in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ toric code model on a square lattice with external fields. We show that the QFI density of the ground state can be written in terms of the expectation values of gauge-invariant Wilson loops for different sizes of square regions and identify $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order by its scaling behavior. Furthermore, we use this multipartite entanglement witness to investigate thermalization and disorder-assisted stabilizati…

In a non-equilibrium many-body system, the quantum information dynamics between non-complementary regions is a crucial feature to understand the local relaxation towards statistical ensembles. Unfortunately, its characterization is a formidable task, as non-complementary parts are generally in a mixed state. We show that for integrable systems, this quantum information dynamics can be quantitatively understood within the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading. Precisely, we provide an exact prediction for the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a quench. In the spa…
We compute concurrence and negativity as measures of two-site entanglement generated by a power-law quench (characterized by a rate 1/tau and an exponent alpha) which takes an anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field through a quantum critical point (QCP). We show that only the even-neighbor pairs of sites get entangled in such a process. Moreover, there is a critical rate of quench, 1/tau_c, above which no two-site entanglement is generated; the entire entanglement is multipartite. The ratio of the two-site entanglements between consecutive even neighbors can be tuned by changing the quench…
Recent experimental observation of weak ergodicity breaking in Rydberg atom quantum simulators has sparked interest in quantum many-body scars - eigenstates which evade thermalisation at finite energy densities due to novel mechanisms that do not rely on integrability or protection by a global symmetry. A salient feature of some quantum many-body scars is their sub-volume bipartite entanglement entropy. In this work we demonstrate that such exact many-body scars also possess extensive multipartite entanglement structure if they stem from an su(2) spectrum generating algebra. We show this analy…

We study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) and, thus, the multipartite entanglement structure of thermal pure states in the context of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). In both the canonical ensemble and the ETH, the quantum Fisher information may be explicitly calculated from the response functions. In the case of ETH, we find that the expression of the QFI bounds the corresponding canonical expression from above. This implies that although average values and fluctuations of local observables are indistinguishable from their canonical counterpart, the entanglement structure o…
