The preparation and certification of quantum states is a fundamental challenge across quantum information technology. We introduce a tomography-free state certification method that lower-bounds the fidelity by estimating expectation values of engineered parent-Hamiltonian terms from local measurement data. We apply this framework to construct a parent Hamiltonian that enables certification and variational optimization across the Dicke-state family, which includes the single-excitation $W_n$ state. We experimentally validate the framework on IBM quantum hardware, certifying genuine multipartite entanglement for $W_n$ states up to six qubits and establishing positive lower bounds on the state fidelity up to thirteen qubits. For Dicke states with two- and three-excitations, we certify genuine multipartite entanglement up to seven qubits. Within this stringent certification framework, these results constitute among the largest witness-certified demonstrations of such states on a programmable quantum processor.
We discuss efficient simulation and certification of the dynamics induced by a quantum many-body Hamiltonian with short-ranged interactions, extending prior results for one-dimensional systems [Osborne, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 157202 (2006) and Lanyon, Maier et al, Nat. Phys. 13, 1158 (2017)] to lattices in arbitrary spatial dimensions.
In recent years quantum simulation has made great strides culminating in experiments that operate in a regime that existing supercomputers cannot easily simulate. Although this raises the possibility that special purpose analog quantum simulators may be able to perform computational tasks that existing computers cannot, it also introduces a major challenge: certifying that the quantum simulator is in fact simulating the correct quantum dynamics. We provide an algorithm that, under relatively weak assumptions, can be used to efficiently infer the Hamiltonian of a large but untrusted quantum sim…
We investigate the relative volume of parent Hamiltonians having a target ground state up to some fixed error $ε$, a quantity which sets a benchmark on the performance of quantum simulators. For vanishing error, this relative volume is of measure zero, whereas for a generic $ε$ we show that it increases with the dimension of the Hilbert space. We also address the volume of parent Hamiltonians when they are restricted to be local. For translationally invariant Hamiltonians, we provide an upper bound to their relative volume. Finally, we estimate numerically the relative volume of parent Hamilto…
Given a generic time-dependent many-body quantum state, we determine the associated parent Hamiltonian. This procedure may require, in general, interactions of any sort. Enforcing the requirement of a fixed set of engineerable Hamiltonians, we find the optimal Hamiltonian once a set of realistic elementary interactions is defined. We provide three examples of this approach. We first apply the optimization protocol to the ground states of the one-dimensional Ising model and a ferromagnetic $p$-spin model but with time-dependent coefficients. We also consider a time-dependent state that interpol…

One of the main challenges in the field of quantum simulation and computation is to identify ways to certify the correct functioning of a device when a classical efficient simulation is not available. Important cases are situations in which one cannot classically calculate local expectation values of state preparations efficiently. In this work, we develop weak-membership formulations of the certification of ground state preparations. We provide a non-interactive protocol for certifying ground states of frustration-free Hamiltonians based on simple energy measurements of local Hamiltonian term…

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), which attracts attention as a promising application of noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, finds a ground state of a given Hamiltonian by variationally optimizing the parameters of quantum circuits called ansatz. Since the difficulty of the optimization depends on the complexity of the problem Hamiltonian and the structure of the ansatz, it has been difficult to analyze the performance of optimizers for the VQE systematically. To resolve this problem, we propose a technique to construct a benchmark problem whose ground state is guaranteed to be achi…
We construct parent Hamiltonians involving only local 2-body interactions for a broad class of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Making use of perturbation gadget techniques, we define a perturbative Hamiltonian acting on the virtual PEPS space with a finite order low energy effective Hamiltonian that is a gapped, frustration-free parent Hamiltonian for an encoded version of a desired PEPS. For topologically ordered PEPS, the ground space of the low energy effective Hamiltonian is shown to be in the same phase as the desired state to all orders of perturbation theory. An encoded parent H…
We introduce a method for the search of parent Hamiltonians of input wave-functions based on the structure of their reduced density matrix. The two key elements of our recipe are an ansatz on the relation between reduced density matrix and parent Hamiltonian that is exact at the field theory level, and a minimization procedure on the space of relative entropies, which is particularly convenient due to its convexity. As examples, we show how our method correctly reconstructs the parent Hamiltonian correspondent to several non-trivial ground state wave functions, including conformal and symmetry…
Tensor Network states form a powerful framework for both the analytical and numerical study of strongly correlated phases. Vital to their analytical utility is that they appear as the exact ground states of associated parent Hamiltonians, where canonical proof techniques guarantee a controlled ground space structure. Yet, while those Hamiltonians are local by construction, the known techniques often yield complex Hamiltonians which act on a rather large number of spins. In this paper, we present an algorithm to systematically simplify parent Hamiltonians, breaking them down into any given basi…
We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the family of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids proposed recently by two of us [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)], which includes the Abelian chiral spin liquid proposed by Kalmeyer and Laughlin, as the special case S=1/2. As we use a circular disk geometry with an open boundary, both the annihilation operators we identify and the Hamiltonians we construct from these are exact only in the thermodynamic limit.
We prove that every injective Matrix Product State is the unique ground state of a simple hopping theory. We start by studying the low energy spectrum of parent Hamiltonians of injective Matrix Product States in a particular long range and system size limit under the validity of an asymptotic regime with low particle density. We show that in this limit a natural first quantization arises. This allows us to compute a specific type of low energy spectrum. This spectrum depends solely on the properties of a quantum channel, i.e. transfer matrix of the ground state, and not on any other details of…
Variational wave functions have been a successful tool to investigate the properties of quantum spin liquids. Finding their parent Hamiltonians is of primary interest for the experimental simulation of these strongly correlated phases, and for gathering additional insights on their stability. In this work, we systematically reconstruct approximate spin-chain parent Hamiltonians for Jastrow-Gutzwiller wave functions, which share several features with quantum spin liquid wave-functions in two dimensions. Firstly, we determine the different phases encoded in the parameter space through their corr…
We introduce a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally invariant valence bond solid states with a built-in Lie group $G$ and derive their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence bond solid states are their unique ground states. For quantum integer spin-$S$ chains, we discuss two topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states: One consists of two virtual SU(2) spin-$J$ variables in each site and another is formed by using two $SO(2S+1)$ spinors. Among them, a new spin-1 fermionic v…
This article investigates the stability of the ground state subspace of a canonical parent Hamiltonian of a Matrix product state against local perturbations. We prove that the spectral gap of such a Hamiltonian remains stable under weak local perturbations even in the thermodynamic limit, where the entire perturbation might not be bounded. Our discussion is based on preceding work by D.A. Yarotsky that develops a perturbation theory for relatively bounded quantum perturbation of classical Hamiltonians. We exploit a renormalization procedure, which on large scale transforms the parent Hamiltoni…
We consider the $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [Fannes-Nachtergaele-Werner, Nachtergaele] as parents Hamiltonians of translation invariant finitely correlated states. Within this family, we show that the number of edge modes, which is equal at the left and right edge, is the complete invariant. The construction proves that translation invariance of the `bulk' ground state does not need to be broken to establish $C^1$-equivalence, namely that the spin chain does not need to be blocked.
We analyze general zero mode properties of the parent Hamiltonian of the unprojected Jain-2/5 state. We characterize the zero mode condition associated to this Hamiltonian via projection onto a four-dimensional two-particle subspace for given pair angular momentum, for the disk and similarly for the spherical geometry. Earlier numerical claims in the literature about ground state uniqueness on the sphere are substantiated on analytic grounds, and related results are derived. Preference is given to second quantized methods, where zero mode properties are derived not from given analytic wave fun…
We study the inverse problem of constructing an appropriate Hamiltonian from a physically reasonable set of orthogonal wave functions for a quantum spin system. Usually, we are given a local Hamiltonian and try to characterize the relevant wave functions and energies (the spectrum) of the system. Here, we take the opposite approach; starting from a collection of orthogonal wave functions, our goal is to characterize the associated parent Hamiltonian, to see how the wave functions and the energy values determine the structure of the parent Hamiltonian. Specifically, we obtain (quasi) local Hami…
This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with…

Anderson's idea of a (short-ranged) resonating valence bond (RVB) spin liquid has been the first ever proposal of what we now call a topologically ordered phase. Since then, a wealth of exactly solvable lattice models have been constructed that have topologically ordered ground states. For a long time, however, it has been difficult to realize Anderson's original vision in such solvable models, according to which the ground state has an unbroken SU(2) spin rotational symmetry and is dominated by fluctuation of singlet bonds. The kagome lattice is the simplest lattice geometry for which parent …
We introduce a family of strongly-correlated spin wave functions on arbitrary spin-1/2 and spin-1 lattices in one and two dimensions. These states are lattice analogues of Moore-Read states of particles at filling fraction 1/q, which are non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall states in 2D. One parameter enables us to perform an interpolation between the continuum limit, where the states become continuum Moore-Read states of bosons (odd q) and fermions (even q), and the lattice limit. We show numerical evidence that the topological entanglement entropy stays the same along the interpolation for so…

For every Matrix Product State (MPS) one can always construct a so-called parent Hamiltonian. This is a local, frustration free, Hamiltonian which has the MPS as ground state and is gapped. Whenever that parent Hamiltonian has a degenerate ground state (the so-called non-injective case), we construct another 'uncle' Hamiltonian which is local and frustration free but gapless, and its spectrum is $\R^+$. The construction is obtained by linearly perturbing the matrices building up the state in a random direction, and then taking the limit where the perturbation goes to zero. For MPS where the pa…

Multipartite entanglement, such as witnessed through the quantum Fisher information (QFI), is a crucial resource for quantum technologies, but its experimental certification is highly challenging. Here, we propose an experimentally friendly protocol to measure the QFI. It relies on recording the short-time dynamics of simple observables after a quench from a thermal state, works for spins, bosons, and fermions, and can be implemented in standard cold-atom experiments and other platforms with temporal control over the system Hamiltonian. To showcase the protocol, we simulate it for the one-dime…
We investigate lattice effects on wave functions that are lattice analogues of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin wave functions with number of particles per flux $ν=1/q$ in the Landau levels. These wave functions are defined analytically on lattices with $μ$ particles per lattice site, where $μ$ may be different than $ν$. We give numerical evidence that these states have the same topological properties as the corresponding continuum Laughlin states for different values of $q$ and for different fillings $μ$. These states define, in particular, particle-hole symmetric lattice Fractional Quantum Hal…
Quantum simulators are engineered devices controllably designed to emulate complex and classically intractable quantum systems. A key challenge is to certify whether the simulator truly mimics the Hamiltonian of interest. This certification step requires the comparison of a simulator's output to a known answer, which is usually limited to small systems due to the exponential scaling of the Hilbert space. Here, in the context of Fermi-Hubbard spin-based analogue simulators, we propose a modular many-body spin to charge conversion scheme that scales linearly with both the system size and the num…

We find the complete family of many-body quantum Hamiltonians with ground-state of Jastrow form involving the pairwise product of a pair function in an arbitrary spatial dimension. The parent Hamiltonian generally includes a two-body pairwise potential as well as a three-body potential. We thus generalize the Calogero-Marchioro construction for the three-dimensional case to arbitrary spatial dimensions. The resulting family of models is further extended to include a one-body term representing an external potential, which gives rise to an additional long-range two-body interaction. Using this f…
