We investigate lattice effects on wave functions that are lattice analogues of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin wave functions with number of particles per flux $ν=1/q$ in the Landau levels. These wave functions are defined analytically on lattices with $μ$ particles per lattice site, where $μ$ may be different than $ν$. We give numerical evidence that these states have the same topological properties as the corresponding continuum Laughlin states for different values of $q$ and for different fillings $μ$. These states define, in particular, particle-hole symmetric lattice Fractional Quantum Hall states when the lattice is half-filled. On the square lattice it is observed that for $q\leq 4$ this particle-hole symmetric state displays the topological properties of the continuum Laughlin state at filling fraction $ν=1/q$, while for larger $q$ there is a transition towards long-range ordered anti-ferromagnets. This effect does not persist if the lattice is deformed from a square to a triangular lattice, or on the Kagome lattice, in which case the topological properties of the state are recovered. We then show that changing the number of particles while keeping the expression of these wave functions identical gives rise to edge states that have the same correlations in the bulk as the reference lattice Laughlin states but a different density at the edge. We derive an exact parent Hamiltonian for which all these edge states are ground states with different number of particles. In addition this Hamiltonian admits the reference lattice Laughlin state as its unique ground state of filling factor $1/q$. Parent Hamiltonians are also derived for the lattice Laughlin states at other fillings of the lattice, when $μ\leq 1/q$ or $μ\geq 1-1/q$ and when $q=4$ also at half-filling.
We propose a set of spin system wavefunctions that are very similar to lattice versions of the Laughlin states. The wavefunction are conformal blocks of conformal field theories, and for filling factor ν=1/2 we provide a parent Hamiltonian, which is valid for any even number of spins and is at the same time a 2D generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model. We also demonstrate that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state is reproduced as a particular case of this model. Finally, we discuss various properties of the spin states and point out several analogies to known results for the Laughlin states.
We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the family of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids proposed recently by two of us [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)], which includes the Abelian chiral spin liquid proposed by Kalmeyer and Laughlin, as the special case S=1/2. As we use a circular disk geometry with an open boundary, both the annihilation operators we identify and the Hamiltonians we construct from these are exact only in the thermodynamic limit.
There has been a significant interest in the last years in finding fractional quantum Hall physics in lattice models, but it is not always clear how these models connect to the corresponding models in continuum systems. Here we introduce a family of models that is able to interpolate between a recently proposed set of lattice models with Laughlin-like ground states constructed from conformal field theory and models with ground states that are practically the usual bosonic/fermionic Laughlin states in the continuum. Both the ground state and the Hamiltonian are known analytically, and we find t…
We study the change of the Laughlin states under large deformations of the geometry of the sphere and the plane, associated with Mabuchi geodesics on the space of metrics with Hamiltonian $S^1$-symmetry. For geodesics associated with the square of the symmetry generator, as the geodesic time goes to infinity, the geometry of the sphere becomes that of a thin cigar collapsing to a line and the Laughlin states become concentrated on a discrete set of $S^1$--orbits, corresponding to Bohr-Sommerfeld orbits of geometric quantization. The lifting of the Mabuchi geodesics to the bundle of quantum sta…
We study frustration-free Hamiltonians of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the point of view of the matrix product state (MPS) representation of their ground and excited states. There is a wealth of solvable models relating to FQH physics, which, however, is mostly derived and analyzed from the vantage point of first-quantized "analytic clustering properties". In contrast, one obtains long-ranged frustration-free lattice models when these Hamiltonians are studied in an orbital basis, which is the natural basis for the MPS representation of FQH states. The connection between MPS-like s…
We introduce a two-parameter family of strongly-correlated wave functions for bosons and fermions in lattices. One parameter, $q$, is connected to the filling fraction. The other one, $η$, allows us to interpolate between the lattice limit ($η=1$) and the continuum limit ($η\to 0^+$) of families of states appearing in the context of the fractional quantum Hall effect or the Calogero-Sutherland model. We give evidence that the main physical properties along the interpolation remain the same. Finally, in the lattice limit, we derive parent Hamiltonians for those wave functions and in 1D, we dete…
We study lattice wave functions obtained from the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. Following Moore and Read's construction, the Kalmeyer-Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state is defined as a correlation function of primary fields. By an additional insertion of Kac-Moody currents, we associate a wave function to each state of the conformal field theory. These wave functions span the complete Hilbert space of the lattice system. On the cylinder, we study global properties of the lattice states analytically and correlation functions numerically using a Metropolis Monte Carlo …

We construct parent Hamiltonians involving only local 2-body interactions for a broad class of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Making use of perturbation gadget techniques, we define a perturbative Hamiltonian acting on the virtual PEPS space with a finite order low energy effective Hamiltonian that is a gapped, frustration-free parent Hamiltonian for an encoded version of a desired PEPS. For topologically ordered PEPS, the ground space of the low energy effective Hamiltonian is shown to be in the same phase as the desired state to all orders of perturbation theory. An encoded parent H…
We introduce a method for the search of parent Hamiltonians of input wave-functions based on the structure of their reduced density matrix. The two key elements of our recipe are an ansatz on the relation between reduced density matrix and parent Hamiltonian that is exact at the field theory level, and a minimization procedure on the space of relative entropies, which is particularly convenient due to its convexity. As examples, we show how our method correctly reconstructs the parent Hamiltonian correspondent to several non-trivial ground state wave functions, including conformal and symmetry…
Tensor Network states form a powerful framework for both the analytical and numerical study of strongly correlated phases. Vital to their analytical utility is that they appear as the exact ground states of associated parent Hamiltonians, where canonical proof techniques guarantee a controlled ground space structure. Yet, while those Hamiltonians are local by construction, the known techniques often yield complex Hamiltonians which act on a rather large number of spins. In this paper, we present an algorithm to systematically simplify parent Hamiltonians, breaking them down into any given basi…
Number of zeros seen by a particle around small clusters of other particles is encoded in the root partition, and partly characterizes the correlations in fractional quantum Hall trial wavefunctions. We explore a generalization wherein we consider the counting of zeros seen by a cluster of particles on another cluster. Numbers of such zeros between clusters in the Laughlin wavefunctions are fully determined by the root partition. However, such a counting is unclear for general Jain states where a polynomial expansion is difficult. Here we consider the simplest state beyond the Laughlin wavefun…
We introduce a "second-quantized" representation of the ring of symmetric functions to further develop a purely second-quantized -- or "lattice" -- approach to the study of zero modes of frustration free Haldane-pseudo-potential-type Hamiltonians, which in particular stabilize Laughlin ground states. We present three applications of this formalism. We start demonstrating how to systematically construct all zero-modes of Laughlin-type parent Hamiltonians in a framework that is free of first-quantized polynomial wave functions, and show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with dominance p…
We introduce a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally invariant valence bond solid states with a built-in Lie group $G$ and derive their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence bond solid states are their unique ground states. For quantum integer spin-$S$ chains, we discuss two topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states: One consists of two virtual SU(2) spin-$J$ variables in each site and another is formed by using two $SO(2S+1)$ spinors. Among them, a new spin-1 fermionic v…
We introduce one-dimensional lattice models with exact matrix-product ground states describing the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in Laughlin series (given by filling factors $ν=1/q$) on torus geometry. Surprisingly, the exactly solvable Hamiltonian has the same mathematical structure as that of the pseudopotential for the Laughlin wave function, and naturally derives the general properties of the Laughlin wave function such as the $Z_2$ properties of the FQH states and the fermion-boson relation. The obtained exact ground states have high overlaps with the Laughlin states and well descr…
We analyze general zero mode properties of the parent Hamiltonian of the unprojected Jain-2/5 state. We characterize the zero mode condition associated to this Hamiltonian via projection onto a four-dimensional two-particle subspace for given pair angular momentum, for the disk and similarly for the spherical geometry. Earlier numerical claims in the literature about ground state uniqueness on the sphere are substantiated on analytic grounds, and related results are derived. Preference is given to second quantized methods, where zero mode properties are derived not from given analytic wave fun…
This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with…
We describe a general method to identify exact, local parent Hamiltonians for trial states like quantum Hall or spin liquid states, which we have used extensively during the past decade. It can be used to identify exact parent Hamiltonians, either directly or via the construction of simpler annihilation operators from which a parent Hamiltonian respecting all the required symmetries can be constructed. Most remarkably, however, the method provides approximate parent Hamiltonians whenever an exact solution is not available within the space of presumed interaction terms.
Variational wave functions have been a successful tool to investigate the properties of quantum spin liquids. Finding their parent Hamiltonians is of primary interest for the experimental simulation of these strongly correlated phases, and for gathering additional insights on their stability. In this work, we systematically reconstruct approximate spin-chain parent Hamiltonians for Jastrow-Gutzwiller wave functions, which share several features with quantum spin liquid wave-functions in two dimensions. Firstly, we determine the different phases encoded in the parameter space through their corr…
Anderson's idea of a (short-ranged) resonating valence bond (RVB) spin liquid has been the first ever proposal of what we now call a topologically ordered phase. Since then, a wealth of exactly solvable lattice models have been constructed that have topologically ordered ground states. For a long time, however, it has been difficult to realize Anderson's original vision in such solvable models, according to which the ground state has an unbroken SU(2) spin rotational symmetry and is dominated by fluctuation of singlet bonds. The kagome lattice is the simplest lattice geometry for which parent …
For every Matrix Product State (MPS) one can always construct a so-called parent Hamiltonian. This is a local, frustration free, Hamiltonian which has the MPS as ground state and is gapped. Whenever that parent Hamiltonian has a degenerate ground state (the so-called non-injective case), we construct another 'uncle' Hamiltonian which is local and frustration free but gapless, and its spectrum is $\R^+$. The construction is obtained by linearly perturbing the matrices building up the state in a random direction, and then taking the limit where the perturbation goes to zero. For MPS where the pa…
We present a method for constructing parent Hamiltonians for the chiral spin liquid. We find two distinct Hamiltonians for which the chiral spin liquid on a square lattice is an exact zero-energy ground state. We diagonalize both Hamiltonians numerically for 16-site lattices, and find that the chiral spin liquid, modulo its two-fold topological degeneracy, is indeed the unique ground state for one Hamiltonian, while it is not unique for the other.
We consider a thought experiment where two distinct species of 2D particles in a perpendicular magnetic field interact via repulsive potentials. If the magnetic field and the interactions are strong enough, one type of particles forms a Laughlin state and the other ones couple to Laughlin quasi-holes. We show that in this situation, the motion of the second type of particles is described by an effective Hamiltonian, corresponding to the magnetic gauge picture for non-interacting anyons. The argument is in accord with, but distinct from, the Berry phase calculation of Arovas-Schrieffer-Wilczek.…
We develop a method to efficiently calculate trial wave functions for quantum Hall systems which involve projection onto the lowest Landau level. The method essentially replaces lowest Landau level projection by projection onto the $M$ lowest eigenstates of a suitably chosen hamiltonian acting within the lowest Landau level. The resulting "energy projection" is a controlled approximation to the exact lowest Landau level projection which improves with increasing $M$. It allows us to study projected trial wave functions for system sizes close to the maximal sizes that can be reached by exact dia…
We introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and…
We introduce a family of strongly-correlated spin wave functions on arbitrary spin-1/2 and spin-1 lattices in one and two dimensions. These states are lattice analogues of Moore-Read states of particles at filling fraction 1/q, which are non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall states in 2D. One parameter enables us to perform an interpolation between the continuum limit, where the states become continuum Moore-Read states of bosons (odd q) and fermions (even q), and the lattice limit. We show numerical evidence that the topological entanglement entropy stays the same along the interpolation for so…
We present a general method to construct translation-invariant and SU(2) symmetric antiferromagnetic parent Hamiltonians of valence bond crystals (VBC). The method is based on a canonical mapping transforming S=1/2 spin operators into a bilinear form of a new set of dimer fermion operators. We construct parent Hamltonians of the columnar- and the staggered-VBC on the square lattice, for which the VBC is an eigenstate in all regimes and the exact ground state in some region of the phase diagram. We study the depart from the exact VBC regime upon tuning the anisotropy by means of the hierarchica…
Using an algebra of second quantized operators, we develop local two-body parent Hamiltonians for all unprojected Jain states at filling factor $n/(2n{\sf p}+1)$, with integer $n$, and (half-)integer ${\sf p}$. We rigorously establish that these states are uniquely stabilized and that zero mode counting reproduces mode counting in the associated edge conformal field theory. We further establish an associated "entangled Pauli principle" describing these states and associated zero mode spaces, as well as an emergent SU($n$) symmetry.
We investigate a many-body wave function for particles on a cylinder known as Laughlin's function. It is the power of a Vandermonde determinant times a Gaussian. Our main result is: in a many-particle limit, at fixed radius, all correlation functions have a unique limit, and the limit state has a non-trivial period in the axial direction. The result holds regardless how large the radius is, for fermions as well as bosons. In addition, we explain how the algebraic structure used in proofs relates to a ground state perturbation series and to quasi-state decompositions, and we show that the monom…
I present a family of one-dimensional time reversal lattice Hamiltonians whose exact ground states are bosonic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids with well defined total chiral momentum. These Hamiltonians describe k-hard-core bosons and involve long-range tunneling and interaction processes with an amplitude decaying with the chord distance. For k=2 the ground state is a p-wave paired phase corresponding to the Pfaffian quantum Hall state. This family of non-Abelian liquids is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with a family of non-Abelian spin-k/2 liquids exhibiting hidden non…
Traditional computational methods for studying quantum many-body systems are "forward methods," which take quantum models, i.e., Hamiltonians, as input and produce ground states as output. However, such forward methods often limit one's perspective to a small fraction of the space of possible Hamiltonians. We introduce an alternative computational "inverse method," the Eigenstate-to-Hamiltonian Construction (EHC), that allows us to better understand the vast space of quantum models describing strongly correlated systems. EHC takes as input a wave function $|ψ_T\rangle$ and produces as output H…
Conformal field theory has turned out to be a powerful tool to derive interesting lattice models with analytical ground states. Here, we investigate a class of critical, one-dimensional lattice models of fermions and hardcore bosons related to the Laughlin states. The Hamiltonians of the exact models involve interactions over long distances that are difficult to realize experimentally. This motivates us to study the properties of models with the same type of interactions, but now only between nearest and possibly next-nearest neighbor sites. Based on computations of wavefunction overlaps, enta…
We find the complete family of many-body quantum Hamiltonians with ground-state of Jastrow form involving the pairwise product of a pair function in an arbitrary spatial dimension. The parent Hamiltonian generally includes a two-body pairwise potential as well as a three-body potential. We thus generalize the Calogero-Marchioro construction for the three-dimensional case to arbitrary spatial dimensions. The resulting family of models is further extended to include a one-body term representing an external potential, which gives rise to an additional long-range two-body interaction. Using this f…

This monograph introduces an exact model for a critical spin chain with arbitrary spin S, which includes the Haldane--Shastry model as the special case S=1/2. While spinons in the Haldane--Shastry model obey abelian half-fermi statistics, the spinons in the general model introduced here obey non-abelian statistics. This manifests itself through topological choices for the fractional momentum spacings. The general model is derived by mapping exact models of quantized Hall states onto spin chains. The book begins with pedagogical review of all the relevant models including the non-abelian statis…
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect is one of the most striking phenomena in condensed matter physics. It is described by a simple Laughlin wavefunction and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. In lattice systems, however, such an effect has not been observed, there are few simple models displaying it, and only few mechanisms leading to it are known. Here we propose a new way of constructing lattice Hamiltonians with local interactions and FQH like ground states. In particular, we obtain a spin 1/2 model with a bosonic Laughlin like ground state, displaying a…
Standard bosonization techniques lead to phonon-like excitations in a Luttinger liquid (LL), reflecting the absence of Landau quasiparticles in these systems. Yet in addition to the above excitations some LL are known to possess solitonic states carrying fractional quantum numbers (e.g. the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain). We have reconsidered the zero modes in the low-energy spectrum of the gaussian boson LL hamiltonian both for fermionic and bosonic LL: in the spinless case we find that two elementary excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers allow to generate all the charge and current exc…
We motivate a close look on the usefulness of the Gaffnian and Haffnian quasihole manifold (null spaces of the respective model Hamiltonians) for well-known gapped fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases. The conformal invariance of these subspaces are derived explicitly from microscopic many-body states. The resultant CFT description leads to an intriguing emergent primary field with $h=2,c=0$, and we argue the quasihole manifolds are quantum mechanically well-defined and well-behaved. Focusing on the incompressible phases at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/5$, we show the low-lying excitations of the Laughlin…
We introduce a family of many-body quantum states that describe interacting spin one-half hard-core particles with bosonic or fermionic statistics on arbitrary one- and two-dimensional lattices. The wave functions at lattice filling fraction $ν=2/(2m+1)$ are derived from deformations of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model $\mathfrak{su}(3)_1$ and are related to the $(m+1,m+1,m)$ Halperin fractional quantum Hall states. We derive long-range SU(2) invariant parent Hamiltonians for these states which in two dimensions are chiral $t$-$J$-$V$ models with additional three-body interaction terms. In one dim…
