We demonstrate that multipartite entanglement, witnessed by the quantum Fisher information (QFI), can characterize topological quantum phase transitions in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ toric code model on a square lattice with external fields. We show that the QFI density of the ground state can be written in terms of the expectation values of gauge-invariant Wilson loops for different sizes of square regions and identify $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order by its scaling behavior. Furthermore, we use this multipartite entanglement witness to investigate thermalization and disorder-assisted stabilization of topological order after a quantum quench. Moreover, with an upper bound of the QFI, we demonstrate the absence of finite-temperature topological order in the 2D toric code model in the thermodynamic limit. Our results provide insights to topological phases, which are robust against external disturbances, and are candidates for topologically protected quantum computation.
In this paper we study the geometrical structures of multi-qubit states based on symplectic toric manifolds. After a short review of symplectic toric manifolds, we discuss the space of a single quantum state in terms of these manifolds. We also investigate entangled multipartite states based on moment map and Delzant's construction of toric manifolds and algebraic toric varieties.
We investigate the geometrical structures of multipartite states based on construction of toric varieties. In particular, we describe pure quantum systems in terms of affine toric varieties and projective embedding of these varieties in complex projective spaces. We show that a quantum system can be corresponds to a toric variety of a fan which is constructed by gluing together affine toric varieties of polytopes. Moreover, we show that the projective toric varieties are the spaces of separable multipartite quantum states. The construction is a generalization of the complex multi-projective Se…
We investigate the geometrical structure of multipartite states based on the construction of toric varieties. We show that the toric variety represents the space of general pure states and projective toric variety defines the space of separable set of multi-qubits states. We also discuss in details the construction of single-, two-, three-, and multi- qubits states. This construction gives a very simple and elegant visual representation of the geometrical structure of multipartite quantum systems.
In this paper I will investigate geometrical structures of multipartite quantum systems based on complex projective varieties. These varieties are important in characterization of quantum entangled states. In particular I will establish relation between multi-projective Segre varieties and multip-qubit quantum states. I also will discuss other geometrical approaches such as toric varieties to visualize complex multipartite quantum systems.
A special feature of the ground state in a topologically ordered phase is the existence of large scale correlations depending only on the topology of the regions. These correlations can be detected by the topological entanglement entropy or by a measure called irreducible correlation. We show that these two measures coincide for states obeying an area law and having zero-correlation length. Moreover, we provide an operational meaning for these measures by proving its equivalence to the optimal rate of a particular class of secret sharing protocols. This establishes an information-theoretical a…
We demonstrate that two toric code layers on the square lattice coupled by an Ising interaction display two distinct phases with intrinsic topological order. The second-order quantum phase transition between the weakly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the strongly-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can be described by the condensation of bosonic quasiparticles from both sides and belongs to the 3d Ising$^*$ universality class. This can be shown by an exact duality transformation to the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice, which builds on the existence of an ext…
The Z_2 topological order in Z_2 spin liquid and in exactly soluble Kitaev toric code model is the simplest topological order for 2+1D bosonic systems. More general 2+1D bosonic topologically ordered states can be constructed via exact soluble string-net models. However, the most important topologically ordered phases of matter are arguably the fermionic fractional quantum Hall states. Topological phases of matter for fermion systems are strictly richer than their bosonic counterparts because locality has different meanings for the two kinds of systems. In this paper, we describe a simple ferm…
We consider the problem of preparing specific encoded resource states for the toric code by local, time-independent interactions with a memoryless environment. We propose a construction of such a dissipative encoder which converts product states to topologically ordered ones while preserving logical information. The corresponding Liouvillian is made up of four-local Lindblad operators. For a qubit lattice of size $L\times L$, we show that this process prepares encoded states in time $O(L)$, which is optimal. This scaling compares favorably with known local unitary encoders for the toric code w…
In this manuscript we study the behaviour of the entanglement measure dubbed negativity in the context of the toric code model. Using a method introduced recently by Calabrese, Cardy and Tonni [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 130502 (2012)], we obtain an exact expression which illustrates how the non-local correlations present in a topologically ordered state reflect in the behaviour of the negativity of the system. We find that the negativity has a leading area-law contribution, if the subsystems are in direct contact with one another (as expected in a zero-range correlated model). We also find a topol…
We propose a scheme to dynamically realize a quantum memory based on the toric code. The code is generated from qubit systems with typical two-body interactions (Ising, XY, Heisenberg) using periodic, NMR-like, pulse sequences. It allows one to encode the logical qubits without measurements and to protect them dynamically against the time evolution of the physical qubits. A weakly coupled cavity mode mediates a long-range attractive interaction between the stabilizer operators of the toric code, thereby suppressing the creation of thermal anyons. This significantly increases the lifetime of th…
We investigate the geometrical and combinatorial structures of multipartite quantum systems based on conifold and toric variety. In particular, we study the relations between resolution of conifold, toric variety, a separable state, and a quantum entangled state for bipartite and multi-qubit states. For example we show that the resolved or deformed conifold is equivalent with the space of a pure entangled two-qubit state. We also generalize this result into multi-qubit states.
In this paper, with the help of Hermitian/non-Hermitian dynamic strings, the theory of non-Hermitian topological order is developed based on a non-Hermitian Wen-plaquette model. The effective models for bosonic topological excitations (e-particle and m-particle) are Hermitian tight-binding lattice model; the effective model for fermionic topological excitation (f-particle) becomes a non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model. In addition, the effective pseudo-spin model for topologically degenerate ground states is derived by calculating the expectation values of Hermitian/non-Hermitian topolog…
Topologically ordered systems exhibit large-scale correlation in their ground states, which may be characterized by quantities such as topological entanglement entropy. We propose that the concept of irreducible many-body correlation, the correlation that cannot be implied by all local correlations, may also be used as a signature of topological order. In a topologically ordered system, we demonstrate that for a part of the system with holes, the reduced density matrix exhibits irreducible many-body correlation which becomes reducible when the holes are removed. The appearance of these irreduc…

It is well known that the topological entanglement entropy ($S_{topo}$) of a topologically ordered ground state in 2 spatial dimensions can be captured efficiently by measuring the tripartite quantum information ($I^{3}$) of a specific annular arrangement of three subsystems. However, the nature of the general N-partite information ($I^{N}$) and quantum correlation of a topologically ordered ground state remains unknown. In this work, we study such $I^N$ measure and its nontrivial dependence on the arrangement of $N$ subsystems. For the collection of subsystems (CSS) forming a closed annular s…

It is well known that magnons, elementary excitations in a magnetic material, behave as bosons when their density is low. We study how the bosonic character of magnons is governed by the amount of a multipartite entanglement in the vacuum state on which magnons are excited. We show that if the multipartite entanglement is strong, magnons cease to be bosons. We also consider some examples, such as ground states of the Heisenberg ferromagnet and the transverse Ising model, the condensation of magnons, the one-way quantum computer, and Kitaev's toric code. Our result provides insights into the qu…
We study the preparation of topologically ordered states by interpolating between an initial Hamiltonian with a unique product ground state and a Hamiltonian with a topologically degenerate ground state space. By simulating the dynamics for small systems, we numerically observe a certain stability of the prepared state as a function of the initial Hamiltonian. For small systems or long interpolation times, we argue that the resulting state can be identified by computing suitable effective Hamiltonians. For effective anyon models, this analysis singles out the relevant physical processes and ex…
We give a topological simulation for tensor networks that we call the two-string model. In this approach we give a new way to design protocols, and we discover a new multipartite quantum communication protocol. We introduce the notion of topologically-compressed transformations. Our new protocol can implement multiple, non-local compressed transformations among multi-parties using one multipartite resource state.
We construct a general wave function with the topological order by introducing the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge degrees of freedom, characterizing both the toric code state and double semion state. Via calculating the correlation length defined from the one-dimensional quantum transfer operator of the wave function norm, we can map out the complete phase diagram in terms of the parameter $λ$ and identify three different quantum critical points (QCPs) at $λ=0$, $\pm 1.73$. The first one separates the toric code phase and double semion phase, while later two describe the topological phase transitions …
We propose a definition for topological order at nonzero temperature in analogy to the usual zero temperature definition that a state is topologically ordered, or "nontrivial", if it cannot be transformed into a product state (or a state close to a product state) using a local (or approximately local) quantum circuit. We prove that any two dimensional Hamiltonian which is a sum of commuting local terms is not topologically ordered at $T>0$. We show that such trivial states cannot be used to store quantum information using certain stringlike operators. This definition is not too restrictive, ho…
We study topological order in a toric code in three spatial dimensions, or a 3+1D Z_2 gauge theory, at finite temperature. We compute exactly the topological entropy of the system, and show that it drops, for any infinitesimal temperature, to half its value at zero temperature. The remaining half of the entropy stays constant up to a critical temperature Tc, dropping to zero above Tc. These results show that topologically ordered phases exist at finite temperatures, and we give a simple interpretation of the order in terms of fluctuating strings and membranes, and how thermally induced point d…
At zero temperature, a two dimensional lattice of Majorana zero modes on mesoscopic superconducting islands has a topologically ordered toric code phase. Recently, a Landau field theory has been proposed for the system that captures its different phases and the associated phase-transitions. It was shown that with the increase of Josephson tunneling between the islands, a continuous symmetry-breaking 3D-XY transition gets transformed into a discrete symmetry-breaking 3D-Ising transition through a couple of tricritical points and first order transitions. Using the proposed field theory, we analy…
Defects in topologically ordered models have interesting properties that are reminiscent of the anyonic excitations of the models themselves. For example, dislocations in the toric code model are known as twists and possess properties that are analogous to Ising anyons. We strengthen this analogy by using the topological entanglement entropy as a diagnostic tool to identify properties of both defects and excitations in the toric code. Specifically, we show, through explicit calculation, that the toric code model including twists and dyon excitations has the same quantum dimensions, the same to…
We consider the problem of preparing topologically ordered states using unitary and non-unitary circuits, as well as local time-dependent Hamiltonian and Liouvillian evolutions. We prove that for any topological code in $D$ dimensions, the time required to encode logical information into the ground space is at least $Ω(d^{1/(D-1)})$, where $d$ is the code distance. This result is tight for the toric code, giving a scaling with the linear system size. More generally, we show that the linear scaling is necessary even when dropping the requirement of encoding: preparing any state close to the gro…
Quantum systems with short range interactions are known to respect an area law for the entanglement entropy: the von Neumann entropy $S$ associated to a bipartition scales with the boundary $p$ between the two parts. Here we study the case in which the boundary is a fractal. We consider the topologically ordered phase of the toric code with a magnetic field. When the field vanishes it is possible to analytically compute the entanglement entropy for both regular and fractal bipartitions $(A,B)$ of the system, and this yields an upper bound for the entire topological phase. When the $A$-$B$ boun…
At zero temperature, a two-dimensional lattice of Majorana zero modes on mesoscopic superconducting islands exhibits a topologically-ordered toric code phase. Recently, a Landau field theory was used to describe the different phases of the aforementioned system and the phase-transitions separating them. While the field theory provides details on the properties of the system close to the phase-transitions, signatures of topological ordering in the different phases have not been computed. This is the primary goal of the current work. We describe a lattice gauge theory of the Majorana toric code …
A useful approach to characterize and identify quantum phase transitions lies in the concept of multipartite entanglement. In this paper, we consider well-known measures of multipartite (global) entanglement, i.e., average linear entropy of one-qubit and two-qubit reduced density matrices, in order to study topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) in the Kitaev Toric code Hamiltonian with a nonlinear perturbation. We provide an $exact$ mapping from aforementioned measures in the above model to internal energy and energy-energy correlations in the classical Ising model. Accordingly, we find …
We present an approach to identify topological order based on unbiased infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) simulations, i.e. where we do not impose a virtual symmetry on the tensors during the optimization of the tensor network ansatz. As an example we consider the ground state of the toric code model in a magnetic field exhibiting $Z_2$ topological order. The optimization is done by an efficient energy minimization approach based on a summation of tensor environments to compute the gradient. We show that the optimized tensors, when brought into the right gauge, are approximately …
Distinguishing different topologically ordered phases and characterizing phase transitions between them is a difficult task due to the absence of local order parameters. In this paper, we use a combination of analytical and numerical approaches to distinguish two such phases and characterize a phase transition between them. The "toric code" and "double semion" models are simple lattice models exhibiting Z2 topological order. Although both models express the same topological ground state degeneracies and entanglement entropies, they are distinct phases of matter because their emergent quasi-par…
We present an analysis of the relaxation dynamics of finite-size topological qubits in contact with a thermal bath. Using a continuous-time Monte Carlo method, we explicitly compute the low-temperature nonequilibrium dynamics of the toric code on finite lattices. In contrast to the size-independent bound predicted for the toric code in the thermodynamic limit, we identify a low-temperature regime on finite lattices below a size-dependent crossover temperature with nontrivial finite-size and temperature scaling of the relaxation time. We demonstrate how this nontrivial finite-size scaling is go…
We study the robustness of a generalized Kitaev's toric code with Z_N degrees of freedom in the presence of local perturbations. For N=2, this model reduces to the conventional toric code in a uniform magnetic field. A quantitative analysis is performed for the perturbed Z_3 toric code by applying a combination of high-order series expansions and variational techniques. We provide strong evidences for first- and second-order phase transitions between topologically-ordered and polarized phases. Most interestingly, our results also indicate the existence of topological multi-critical points in t…
The toric code based on Majorana fermions on mesoscopic superconducting islands is a promising candidate for quantum information processing. In the limit of vanishing Cooper-pair tunneling, it has been argued that the phase transition separating the topologically ordered phase of the toric code from the trivial one is in the universality class of (2+1)D-XY. On the other hand, in the limit of infinitely large Cooper-pair tunneling, the phase transition is in the universality class of (2+1)D-Ising. In this work, we treat the case of finite Cooper-pair tunneling and address the question of how th…
Many-body localized (MBL) systems are often described using their local integrals of motion, which, for spin systems, are commonly assumed to be a local unitary transform of the set of on-site spin-z operators. We show that this assumption cannot hold for topologically ordered MBL systems. Using a suitable definition to capture such systems in any spatial dimension, we demonstrate a number of features, including that MBL topological order, if present: (i) is the same for all eigenstates; (ii) is robust in character against any perturbation preserving MBL; (iii) implies that on topologically no…
We show that multipartite mixed bipartite CC and CQ states are geometrically and topologically distinguished in the space of states. They are characterized by non-vanishing Euler-Poincaré characteristics on the topological side and by the existence of symplectic structure on the geometric side.
One of the important characteristics of topological phases of matter is the topology of the underlying manifold on which they are defined. In this paper, we present the sensitivity of such phases of matter to the underlying topology, by studying the phase transitions induced due to the change in the boundary conditions. We claim that these phase transitions are accompanied by broken symmetries in the excitation space and to gain further insight we analyze various signatures like the ground state degeneracy, topological entanglement entropy while introducing the open-loop operator whose expecta…
Here we investigate the connection between topological order and the geometric entanglement, as measured by the logarithm of the overlap between a given state and its closest product state of blocks. We do this for a variety of topologically-ordered systems such as the toric code, double semion, color code, and quantum double models. As happens for the entanglement entropy, we find that for sufficiently large block sizes the geometric entanglement is, up to possible sub-leading corrections, the sum of two contributions: a bulk contribution obeying a boundary law times the number of blocks, and…
Kitaev's toric code is an exactly solvable model with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological order, which has potential applications in quantum computation and error correction. However, a direct experimental realization remains an open challenge. Here, we propose a building block for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories coupled to dynamical matter and demonstrate how it allows for an implementation of the toric-code ground state and its topological excitations. This is achieved by introducing separate matter excitations on individual plaquettes, whose motion induce the required plaquette terms. The prop…
We analyze the toric code model in the presence of quenched disorder, which is introduced via different types of random magnetic fields. In general, close to a quantum phase transition between a spin polarized phase and a topologically ordered one, we find that increasing the amount of disorder favors the topological phase. For some realizations of disorder, topological order can be robust against arbitrarily strong magnetic fields. In the case of the toric code in a random \pm h field, we show that the system exhibits a quantum phase transition to a spin glass phase in an appropriate dual var…
We prove a nontrivial circuit-depth lower bound for preparing a low-energy state of a locally interacting quantum many-body system in two dimensions, assuming the circuit is geometrically local. For preparing any state which has an energy density of at most $ε$ with respect to Kitaev's toric code Hamiltonian on a two dimensional lattice $Λ$, we prove a lower bound of $Ω\left(\min\left(1/ε^{\frac{1-α}{2}}, \sqrt{|Λ|}\right)\right)$ for any $α>0$. We discuss two implications. First, our bound implies that the lowest energy density obtainable from a large class of existing variational circuits (e…
Topological order is now being established as a central criterion for characterizing and classifying ground states of condensed matter systems and complements categorizations based on symmetries. Fractional quantum Hall systems and quantum spin liquids are receiving substantial interest because of their intriguing quantum correlations, their exotic excitations and prospects for protecting stored quantum information against errors. Here we show that the Hamiltonian of the central model of this class of systems, the Toric Code, can be directly implemented as an analog quantum simulator in lattic…
