We investigate the properties of a sample of 35 galaxies, detected with ALMA at 1.1 mm in the GOODS-ALMA field (area of 69 arcmin$^2$, resolution = 0.60", RMS $\simeq$ 0.18 mJy beam$^{-1}$). Using the UV-to-radio deep multiwavelength coverage of the GOODS-South field, we fit the spectral energy distributions of these galaxies to derive their key physical properties. The galaxies detected by ALMA are among the most massive at $z$ = 2-4 (M$_{\star,med}$ = 8.5$ \times$ 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$) and are either starburst or located in the upper part of the galaxy star-forming main sequence. A significant portion of our galaxy population ($\sim$ 40%), located at $z\sim$ 2.5-3, exhibits abnormally low gas fractions. The sizes of these galaxies, measured with ALMA, are compatible with the trend between $H$-band size and stellar mass observed for $z\sim2$ elliptical galaxies suggesting that they are building compact bulges. We show that there is a strong link between star formation surface density (at 1.1 mm) and gas depletion time: the more compact a galaxy's star-forming region is, the shorter its lifetime will be (without gas replenishment). The identified compact sources associated with relatively short depletion timescales ($\sim$100 Myr), are the ideal candidates to be the progenitors of compact elliptical galaxies at $z$ $\sim$ 2.
In this paper we study the causes of the reported mass-dependence of the slope of SFR-M* relation, the so-called "Main Sequence" of star-forming galaxies, and discuss its implication on the physical processes that shaped the star formation history of massive galaxies over cosmic time. We use the CANDELS near-IR imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope to perform the bulge-to-disk decomposition of distant galaxies and measure for the first time the slope of the SFR-Mdisk relation at z=1. We find that this relation follows very closely the shape of the SFR-M* correlation, still with a pronounced …
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/ sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of V883 Ori, an FU Ori object. We describe the molecular outflow and envelope of the system based on the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emissions, which together trace a bipolar molecular outflow. The C$^{18}$O emission traces the rotational motion of the circumstellar disk. From the $^{12}$CO blue-shifted emission, we estimate a wide opening angle of $\sim$ 150$^{^{\circ}}$ for the outflow cavities. Also, we find that the outflow is very slow (characteristic velocity of only 0.65 km~s$^{-1}$), which is unique for an FU Ori…
We wish to constrain the possible contribution of a magnetohydrodynamic disk wind (DW) to the HH212 molecular jet. We mapped the flow base with ALMA Cycle 4 at 0.13"$\sim$ 60 au resolution and compared these observations with synthetic DW predictions. We identified, in SO/SO$_2$, a rotating flow that is wider and slower than the axial SiO jet. The broad outflow cavity seen in C$^{34}$S is not carved by a fast wide-angle wind but by this slower agent. Rotation signatures may be fitted by a DW of a moderate lever arm launched out to $\sim$ 40 au with SiO tracing dust-free streamlines from 0.05-0…
We report the discovery of a very dense jet-like fast molecular outflow surrounded by a wide-angle wind in a massive young stellar object (MYSO) G18.88MME (stellar mass $\sim$8 M$_{\odot}$) powering an Extended Green Object G18.89$-$0.47. Four cores MM1-4 are identified in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum map (resolution $\sim$0.$"$8) toward G18.88MME, and are seen at the center of the emission structure (extent $\sim$0.3 pc $\times$ 0.2 pc) detected in the ALMA map. G18.88MME is embedded in the core MM1 (mass $\sim$13-18 M$_{\odot}$), where no radio con…
At redshift $z>5$ the far-infrared (FIR) continuum spectra of main-sequence galaxies are sparsely sampled, often with a single data point. The dust temperature $T_{\rm d, SED}$ thus has to be assumed in the FIR continuum fitting. This introduces large uncertainties regarding the derived dust mass ($M_{\rm d}$), FIR luminosity, and obscured fraction of the star formation rate. These are crucial quantities to quantify the effect of dust obscuration in high-$z$ galaxies. To overcome observations limitations, we introduce a new method that combines dust continuum information with the overlying $\h…
Submillimetre and millimetre observations are important in probing the properties of the molecular gas and dust around obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their feedback. With very high-resolution (0."02x0."03 (2x3 pc)) ALMA 345 GHz observations of CO 3-2, HCO$^+$ 4-3, HCN 4-3 $ν_2$=1$f$, and continuum we have studied the molecular outflow and nucleus of the extremely radio-quiet lenticular galaxy NGC1377. The outflow is resolved, revealing a 150 pc long, clumpy, high-velocity, collimated molecular jet. The molecular emission is emerging from the spine of the jet with an average diamete…
We present ALMA ~0.02"-resolution observations of the nucleus of the nearby (~14 Mpc) type-2 AGN NGC 1068 at HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 lines, as well as at their 13C isotopologue and vibrationally excited lines, to scrutinize the morphological/dynamical/chemical/physical properties of dense molecular gas in the putative dusty molecular torus around a mass-accreting supermassive black hole. We confirm almost east-west-oriented dense molecular gas emission both morphologically and dynamically, which we regard as coming from the torus. Bright emission is compact (<3 pc), and low-surface-brightness emiss…
We present a survey of the molecular gas in 61 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected from 870$μ$m continuum surveys of the COSMOS, UDS and ECDFS fields, using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). 46 $^{12}$CO ($J=$2-5) emission lines are detected in 45 of the targets at $z=$1.2-4.8, with redshifts indicating that those which are submillimetre bright and undetected/faint in the optical/near-infrared typically lie at higher redshifts, with a gradient of $Δz/ΔS_{870}=$0.11$\pm$0.04mJy$^{-1}$. We also supplement our data with literature sou…
The disk-outflow connection is thought to play a key role in extracting excess angular momentum from a forming protostar. We present ALMA 0.25" angular resolution observations - in the dust continuum at 1.33 mm and of the molecular line transitions of $^{12}$CO(2-1) and $^{13}$CO(2-1) - of the circumstellar disk and outflow around the T Tauri star HH30, a rare and beautiful example of a pre-main sequence star exhibiting a flared edge-on disk, an optical jet, and a CO molecular outflow. The 1.3 mm continuum emission shows a remarkable elongated morphology along PA=31.2°+/-0.1° that has a consta…
We present 0."5 resolution ALMA detections of the observed 246GHz continuum, [CI]^3P_2-^3P_1 fine structure line ([CI]2-1), CO(7-6) and H2O lines in the z=2.161 radio galaxy MRC1138-262, the 'Spiderweb Galaxy'. We detect strong [CI]2-1 emission both at the position of the radio core, and in a second component ~4kpc away from it. The 1100km/s broad [CI]2-1 line in this latter component, combined with its H2 mass of 1.6x10^10Msun implies this emission must come from a compact region <60pc, possibly containing a second AGN. The combined H2 mass derived for both objects using the [CI]2-1 emission …
Galaxy mergers are thought to be one of the main mechanisms of the mass assembly of galaxies. Recently, many works have suggested a possible increase in the fraction of major mergers in the early Universe, reviving the debate on which processes (e.g., cold accretion, star formation, mergers) most contribute to the mass build-up of galaxies through cosmic time. To estimate the importance of major mergers in this context, we make use of the new data collected by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE), which observed the [CII] 158 $μ$m emission line from a sample of 7…
The outstanding mass growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the Reionisation Epoch and how it is related to the concurrent growth of their host galaxies, poses challenges to theoretical models aimed at explaining how these systems formed in short timescales (<1 Gyr). To trace the average evolutionary paths of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and their host galaxies in the BH mass-host mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) plane, we compare the star formation rate (SFR), derived from the accurate estimate of the dust temperature and the dust mass ($T_{\rm dust}, M_{\rm dust}$), with the BH accretion rate. To…
We present new measurements of the cosmic cold molecular gas evolution out to redshift 6 based on systematic mining of the ALMA public archive in the COSMOS deep field (A3COSMOS). Our A3COSMOS dataset contains ~700 galaxies (0.3 < z < 6) with high-confidence ALMA detections in the (sub-)millimeter continuum and multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Multiple gas mass calibration methods are compared and biases in band conversions (from observed ALMA wavelength to rest-frame Rayleigh-Jeans(RJ)-tail continuum) have been tested. Combining our A3COSMOS sample with ~1,000 CO-observe…
The cosmic star formation rate density first increases with time towards a pronounced peak 10 Gyrs ago (or z=1-2) and then slows down, dropping by more than a factor 10 since z=1. The processes at the origin of the star formation quenching are not yet well identified, either the gas is expelled by supernovae and AGN feedback, or prevented to inflow. Morphological transformation or environment effects are also invoked. Recent IRAM/NOEMA and ALMA results are reviewed about the molecular content of galaxies and its dynamics, as a function of redshift. Along the main sequence of massive star formi…
We investigate the nature of star-forming galaxies with reduced specific star formation rate (sSFR) and high stellar masses, those `green valley' objects that seemingly cause a reported bending, or flattening, of the star-forming main sequence. The fact that such objects host large bulges recently led some to suggest that the internal formation of bulges was a late event that induced the sSFRs of massive galaxies to drop in a slow downfall, and thus the main sequence to bend. We have studied in detail a sample of 10 galaxies at $0.45<z<1$ with secure SFR from Herschel, deep Keck optical spectr…

The "ATOMS," standing for {\it ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions}, survey has observed 146 active star forming regions with ALMA Band 3, aiming to systematically investigate the spatial distribution of various dense gas tracers in a large sample of Galactic massive clumps, to study the roles of stellar feedback in star formation, and to characterize filamentary structures inside massive clumps. In this work, the observations, data analysis, and example science of the "ATOMS" survey are presented, using a case study for the G9.62+0.19 complex. Toward this source…
We consider the capabilities of ALMA and the ngVLA to detect and image the[CII] 158\,$μ$m line from galaxies into the cosmic `dark ages' ($z \sim 10$ to 20). The [CII] line may prove to be a powerful tool in determining spectroscopic redshifts, and galaxy dynamics, for the first galaxies. In 40\,hr, ALMA has the sensitivity to detect the integrated [CII] line emission from a moderate metallicity, active star-forming galaxy [$Z_A = 0.2\,Z_{\odot}$; star formation rate (SFR)= 5\,$M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$], at $z = 10$ at a significance of 6$σ$. The ngVLA will detect the integrated [CII] line emission…
We study deuterium fractionation in two massive starless/early-stage cores C1-N and C1-S in Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G028.37+00.07, first identified by Tan et al. (2013) with ALMA. Line emission from multiple transitions of $\rm N_2H^+$ and $\rm N_2D^+$ were observed with the ALMA, CARMA, SMA, JCMT, NRO 45m and IRAM 30m telescopes. By simultaneously fitting the spectra, we estimate the excitation conditions and deuterium fraction, $D_{\rm frac}^{\rm N_2H^+} \equiv [\rm N_2D^+]/[N_2H^+]$, with values of $D_{\rm frac}^{\rm N_2H^+} \simeq 0.2$--$0.7$, several orders of magnitude above the cosmi…
We have observed the mass-losing carbon star V Hya that is apparently transitioning from an AGB star to a bipolar planetary nebula, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~0".4-0".6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Wave Array (ALMA). Our 13CO and 12CO (J=3-2 and J=2-1) images have led to the discovery of a remarkable set of six expanding rings within a flared, warped Disk structure Undergoing Dynamical Expansion (DUDE) that lies in the system's equatorial plane. We also find, for the first time, several bipolar, high-velocity outflows, some of which have parabolic morphologie…
The ngVLA will obtain breakthrough observations of the cold phases (molecular and atomic) of galactic outflows. These observations will be key to study the driving mechanisms of cold winds, the fate of the gas, the mass-loss rates, the conditions that trigger cold outflows, the fraction of gas that escapes galaxies, the effects of winds on suppressing star formation and slowing black hole growth, the statistical properties of outflows, and the relation between large scale outflows and UFOs and BAL outflows. Finally, we highlight the ngVLA complementarity with existing and planned facilities, s…
We use high-resolution zoom-in cosmological simulations of galaxies of Romano-Diaz et al., post-processing them with a panchromatic three-dimensional radiation transfer code to obtain the galaxy UV luminosity function (LF) at z ~ 6-12. The galaxies are followed in a rare, heavily overdense region within a ~ 5-sigma density peak, which can host high-z quasars, and in an average density region, down to the stellar mass of M_star ~ 4* 10^7 Msun. We find that the overdense regions evolve at a substantially accelerated pace --- the most massive galaxy has grown to M_star ~ 8.4*10^10 Msun by z = 6.3…
The Lya line in the UV and the [CII] line in the FIR are widely used tools to identify galaxies and to obtain insights into ISM properties in the early Universe. By combining data obtained with ALMA in band 7 at ~ 320 GHz as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE) with spectroscopic data from DEIMOS at Keck, VIMOS and FORS2 at the VLT, we assembled a unique sample of 53 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 4.4 < z < 6 in which we detect both the Lya line and the [CII]. We used [CII], observed with ALMA, as a tracer of the systemic velocity of the galaxies,…
The S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star $π^{1}$ Gruis has a known companion at a separation of $\approx$400 AU. The envelope structure, including an equatorial torus and a fast bipolar outflow, is rarely seen in the AGB phase and is particularly unexpected in such a wide binary system. Therefore a second, closer companion has been suggested, but the evidence is not conclusive. The new ALMA $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=3-2 data, together with previously published $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA), and the $^{12}$CO $J$=5-4 and $J$=9-8 lines observed with Herschel/He…
We present a detailed analysis of the disk and circumstellar environment of the forming O-type star AFGL 4176 mm1, placing results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) into context with multiwavelength data. With ALMA, we detect seventeen 1.2 mm continuum sources within 5$''$ (21,000 au) of AFGL 4176 mm1. We find that mm1 has a spectral index of 3.4$\pm$0.2 across the ALMA band, with $>$87% of its 1.2 mm continuum emission from dust. The source mm2, projected 4200 au from mm1, may be a companion or a blueshifted knot in a jet. We also explore the morphological differenc…
Using the deepest 1.2 mm continuum map to date in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) large program, we measure the cosmic density of dust and implied gas (H$_{2}+$H I) mass in galaxies as a function of look-back time. We do so by stacking the contribution from all $H$-band selected galaxies above a given stellar mass in distinct redshift bins, $ρ_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $ρ_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$. At all redshifts, $ρ_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $ρ_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$ grow rapidly as $M$ decreases down to $10^{10}\,M_\odot$, but this gr…
This overview paper presents ATOMIUM, a Large Programme in Cycle 6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA). The goal of ATOMIUM is to understand the dynamics and the gas phase and dust formation chemistry in the winds of evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars. A more general aim is to identify chemical processes applicable to other astrophysical environments. 17 oxygen-rich AGB and RSG stars spanning a range in (circum)stellar parameters and evolutionary phases were observed in a homogeneous observing strategy allowing for an unambiguous compa…
Star formation in the Galactic disc is primarily controlled by gravity, turbulence, and magnetic fields. It is not clear that this also applies to star formation near the Galactic Centre. Here we determine the turbulence and star formation in the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016. Using maps of 3mm dust emission and HNCO intensity-weighted velocity obtained with ALMA, we measure the volume-density variance $σ_{ρ/ρ_0} = 1.3 \pm 0.5$ and turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M} = 11 \pm 3$. Combining these with turbulence simulations to constrain the plasma $β= 0.34 \pm 0.35$, we reconstruct the turbulence drivi…

We analyse ALMA observations of the SO($J_K=6_5-5_4$) emission of the circumstellar envelope of oxygen-rich AGB star R Dor, probing distances between 20 and 100 au from the star where the nascent wind is building up. We give evidence for the slow wind to host, in addition to a previously observed rotating disc, a radial outflow covering very large solid angles and displaying strong inhomogeneity both in direction and radially: the former takes the form of multiple cores and the latter displays a radial dependence suggesting an episode of enhanced mass loss having occurred a century or so ago.
We present an analysis of new and archival ALMA observations of molecular gas in twelve central cluster galaxies. We examine emerging trends in molecular filament morphology and gas velocities to understand their origins. Molecular gas masses in these systems span $10^9-10^{11}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, far more than most gas-rich galaxies. ALMA images reveal a distribution of morphologies from filamentary to disk-dominated structures. Circumnuclear disks on kiloparsec scales appear rare. In most systems, half to nearly all of the molecular gas lies in filamentary structures with masses of a few $\t…
ALMA observations in the CO 1 - 0 line of the interacting galaxies IC 2163 and NGC 2207 at 2" x 1.5" resolution reveal how the encounter drives gas to pile up in narrow, ~ 1 kpc wide, "eyelids" in IC 2163. IC 2163 and NGC 2207 are involved in a grazing encounter, which has led to development in IC 2163 of an eye-shaped (ocular) structure at mid-radius and two tidal arms. The CO data show that there are large velocity gradients across the width of each eyelid, with a mixture of radial and azimuthal streaming of gas at the outer edge of the eyelid relative to its inner edge. The sense of the rad…
The fastest molecular component to the protostellar outflows -- extremely high-velocity (EHV) molecular jets -- are still puzzling since they are seen only rarely. The first aim is to analyze the interaction between the EHV jet and the slow outflow by comparing their outflow force content. The second aim is to analyze the chemical composition of the different outflow velocity components and to reveal the spatial location of molecules. ALMA 3 mm and 1.3 mm observations of five outflow sources at 130 -- 260 au resolution in the Serpens Main cloud are presented. Observations of CO, SiO, H$_2$CO a…

We consider the capabilities of current and future large facilities operating at 2\,mm to 3\,mm wavelength to detect and image the [CII] 158\,$μ$m line from galaxies into the cosmic "dark ages" ($z \sim 10$ to 20). The [CII] line may prove to be a powerful tool in determining spectroscopic redshifts, and galaxy dynamics, for the first galaxies. We emphasize that the nature, and even existence, of such extreme redshift galaxies, remains at the frontier of open questions in galaxy formation. In 40\,hr, ALMA has the sensitivity to detect the integrated [CII] line emission from a moderate metallic…
High-resolution (0."03 - 0."09) (9 - 26 pc)) ALMA (100 - 350 GHz (3 - 0.8 mm)) and VLA 45 GHz measurements have been used to image continuum and spectral line emission from the inner region of the nearby infrared luminous galaxy IC 860. We detect compact (r=8-10 pc), luminous, mm continuum emission in the core of IC 860, with brightness temperatures $T_{\rm B}>$ 280 K. The 45 GHz continuum is equally compact, but fainter in flux. We suggest that the 3 to 0.8 mm continuum is opaque at mm-wavelengths, implying a very large H$_2$ column density $N$(H$_2$) of 1e26 cm-2, and that it emerges from ho…
Using analytic modeling and simulations, we address the origin of an abundance of star-forming, clumpy, extended gas rings about massive central bodies in massive galaxies at $z \!<\! 4$. Rings form by high-angular-momentum streams and survive in galaxies of $M_{\rm star} \!>\! 10^{9.5-10} M_\odot$ where merger-driven spin flips and supernova feedback are ineffective. The rings survive after events of compaction to central nuggets. Ring longevity was unexpected based on inward mass transport driven by torques from violent disc instability. However, evaluating the torques from a tightly wound s…
The burst mode of accretion in massive star formation is a scenario linking the initial gravitational collapse of parent pre-stellar cores to the properties of their gravitationally unstable discs and of their accretion-driven bursts. In this study, we present a series of high-resolution 3D radiation-hydrodynamics numerical simulations for young massive stars formed out of collapsing 100 Mo molecular cores spinning with several values of the ratio of rotational-to-gravitational energies beta=5%-9%. The models include the indirect gravitational potential caused by disc asymmetries. We find that…
Expanding X-ray cavities observed in hot gas atmospheres of many galaxy groups and clusters generate shock waves and turbulence that are primary heating mechanisms required to avoid uninhibited radiatively cooling flows which are not observed. However, we show here that the evolution of buoyant cavities also stimulates radiative cooling of observable masses of low-temperature gas. During their early evolution, radiative cooling occurs in the wakes of buoyant cavities in two locations: in thin radial filaments parallel to the buoyant velocity and more broadly in gas compressed beneath rising ca…
We measure the dust and gas content of the three sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the GN20 proto-cluster at $z=4.05$ using new IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI) CO(4-3) and 1.2-3.3 mm continuum observations. All these three SMGs are heavily dust obscured, with UV-based star formation rate (SFR) estimates significantly smaller than the ones derived from the bolometric infrared (IR), consistent with the spatial offsets revealed by HST and CO imaging. Based also on evaluations of the specific SFR, CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and gas depletion timescale, we classify all the three galax…
