Using the deepest 1.2 mm continuum map to date in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) large program, we measure the cosmic density of dust and implied gas (H$_{2}+$H I) mass in galaxies as a function of look-back time. We do so by stacking the contribution from all $H$-band selected galaxies above a given stellar mass in distinct redshift bins, $ρ_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $ρ_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$. At all redshifts, $ρ_{\rm dust}(M_\ast>M,z)$ and $ρ_{\rm gas}(M_\ast>M,z)$ grow rapidly as $M$ decreases down to $10^{10}\,M_\odot$, but this growth slows down towards lower stellar masses. This flattening implies that at our stellar mass-completeness limits ($10^8\,M_\odot$ and $10^{8.9}\,M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.4$ and $z\sim3$), both quantities converge towards the total cosmic dust and gas mass densities in galaxies. The cosmic dust and gas mass densities increase at early cosmic time, peak around $z\sim2$, and decrease by a factor $\sim4$ and 7, compared to the density of dust and molecular gas in the local universe, respectively. The contribution of quiescent galaxies -- i.e., with little on-going star-formation -- to the cosmic dust and gas mass densities is minor ($\lesssim10\%$). The redshift evolution of the cosmic gas mass density resembles that of the star-formation rate density, as previously found by CO-based measurements. This confirms that galaxies have relatively constant star-formation efficiencies (within a factor $\sim2$) across cosmic time. Our results also imply that by $z\sim0$, a large fraction ($\sim90\%$) of dust formed in galaxies across cosmic time has been destroyed or ejected to the intergalactic medium.
We discuss the nature and physical properties of gas-mass selected galaxies in the ALMA spectroscopic survey (ASPECS) of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We capitalize on the deep optical integral-field spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey and multi-wavelength data to uniquely associate all 16 line-emitters, detected in the ALMA data without preselection, with rotational transitions of carbon monoxide (CO). We identify ten as CO(2-1) at $1 < z < 2$, five as CO(3-2) at $2 < z < 3$ and one as CO(4-3) at $z = 3.6$. Using the MUSE data as a prior, we identify two additional CO(2-1)-emitters, …
Mapping the molecular gas content of the universe is key to our understanding of the build-up of galaxies over cosmic time. Spectral line scans in deep fields, such as the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), provide a unique view on the cold gas content out to high redshift. By conducting `spectroscopy-of-everything', these flux-limited observations are sensitive to the molecular gas in galaxies without preselection, revealing the cold gas content of galaxies that would not be selected in traditional studies. In order to capitalize on the molecular gas observations, knowledge about the physical co…
We report molecular gas mass estimates obtained from a stacking analysis of CO line emission in the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) using the spectroscopic redshifts from the optical integral field spectroscopic survey by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) of the {\it Hubble} Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Stacking was performed on subsets of the sample of galaxies classified by their stellar mass and position relative to the main-sequence relation (on, above, below). Among all the CO emission lines, from \cotwoone to CO(6-5), with redshifts accessible via the ASPECS Band~3 and the MUSE…
The ALMA SPECtroscopic Survey in the {\it Hubble} Ultra Deep Field is an ALMA large program that obtained a frequency scan in the 3\,mm band to detect emission lines from the molecular gas in distant galaxies. We here present our search strategy for emission lines and continuum sources in the HUDF. We compare several line search algorithms used in the literature, and critically account for the line-widths of the emission line candidates when assessing significance. We identify sixteen emission lines at high fidelity in our search. Comparing these sources to multi-wavelength data we find that a…
We use the results from the ALMA large program ASPECS, the spectroscopic survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), to constrain CO luminosity functions of galaxies and the resulting redshift evolution of $ρ$(H$_2$). The broad frequency range covered enables us to identify CO emission lines of different rotational transitions in the HUDF at $z>1$. We find strong evidence that the CO luminosity function evolves with redshift, with the knee of the CO luminosity function decreasing in luminosity by an order of magnitude from $\sim$2 to the local universe. Based on Schechter fits, we estimate t…
The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Band 6 scan (212-272 GHz) covers potential [CII] emission in galaxies at $6\leq z \leq8$ throughout a 2.9 arcmin$^2$ area. By selecting on known Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) and photometric dropout galaxies in the field, we perform targeted searches down to a 5$σ$ [CII] luminosity depth $L_{\mathrm{[CII]}}\sim2.0\times10^8$ L$_{\odot}$, corresponding roughly to star formation rates (SFRs) of $10$-$20$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ when applying a locally calibrated conversion for star-forming galaxies, yielding zero detections. While t…
We present the results from the 1.2 mm continuum image obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). The 1.2 mm continuum image has a size of 2.9 (4.2) arcmin$^2$ within a primary beam response of 50% (10%) and a rms value of $9.3\thinspace{\rmμJy\thinspace beam^{-1}}$. We detect 35 sources at high significance (Fidelity $\geq0.5$), 32 of these have well characterized near-infrared HST counterparts. We estimate the 1.2 mm number counts to flux levels of $<30\thinspace{\rmμJy}$ in two different ways: we first use the detected sources to constrain the…
We present a power spectrum analysis of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey Large Program (ASPECS LP) data from 84 to 115 GHz. These data predominantly probe small-scale fluctuations ($k=10$-$100$ h Mpc$^{-1}$) in the aggregate CO emission in galaxies at $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 4$. We place an integral constraint on CO luminosity functions (LFs) in this redshift range via a direct measurement of their second moments in the three-dimensional (3D) auto-power spectrum, finding a total CO shot noise power $P_{\textrm{CO,CO}}(k_{\textrm{CO(2-1)}}) \leq 1.9\times10^2$ $μ$K$^2$ (Mpc h$^{-1}$)$^3$. This uppe…
We present a CO and atomic fine-structure line luminosity function analysis using the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). ASPECS consists of two spatially-overlapping mosaics that cover the entire ALMA 3mm and 1.2mm bands. We combine the results of a line candidate search of the 1.2mm data cube with those previously obtained from the 3mm cube. Our analysis shows that $\sim$80% of the line flux observed at 3mm arises from CO(2-1) or CO(3-2) emitters at $z$=1-3 (`cosmic noon'). At 1.2mm, more than half of the line flux arises from intermediate-J CO transitions ($J_…
We present a new semi-empirical model for the dust continuum number counts of galaxies at 1.1 millimeter and 850 \micron. Our approach couples an observationally motivated model for the stellar mass and SFR distribution of galaxies with empirical scaling relations to predict the dust continuum flux density of these galaxies. Without a need to tweak the IMF, the model reproduces the currently available observations of the 1.1 millimeter and 850 \micron number counts, including the observed flattening in the 1.1 millimeter number counts below 0.3 mJy \citep{Gonzalez2019numbercounts} and the numb…
The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) provides new constraints for galaxy formation models on the molecular gas properties of galaxies. We compare results from ASPECS to predictions from two cosmological galaxy formation models: the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and the Santa Cruz semi-analytic model (SC SAM). We explore several recipes to model the H$_2$ content of galaxies, finding them to be consistent with one another, and take into account the sensitivity limits and survey area of ASPECS. For a canonical CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of $α_{\rm CO…
We investigate the CO excitation and interstellar medium (ISM) conditions in a cold gas mass-selected sample of 22 star-forming galaxies at $z=0.46-3.60$, observed as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). Combined with VLA follow-up observations, we detect a total of 34 CO $J \rightarrow J-1$ transitions with $J=1$ up to $8$ (and an additional 21 upper limits, up to $J=10$) and six [C I] ${^3P}_1 \rightarrow {^3P}_0$ and ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3P}_1$ transitions (and 12 upper limits). The CO(2-1) and CO(3-2)-selected galaxies, at $z=1.2$ and $2.5$, resp…
We present high-fidelity, 30 milliarcsecond (200-pc) resolution ALMA rest-frame 240 $μ$m observations of cold dust emission in three typical main-sequence star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z \sim 3$ in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF). The cold dust is distributed within the smooth disk-like central regions of star formation $1 - 3$ kpc in diameter, despite their complex and disturbed rest-frame UV and optical morphologies. No dust substructures or clumps are seen down to $\simeq 1- 3$ $M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ (1$σ$) per 200-pc beam. No dust emission is observed at the locations of UV-emitting clum…
We present the results of the first, deep ALMA imaging covering the full 4.5 sq arcmin of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) as previously imaged with WFC3/IR on HST. Using a mosaic of 45 pointings, we have obtained a homogeneous 1.3mm image of the HUDF, achieving an rms sensitivity of 35 microJy, at a resolution of 0.7 arcsec. From an initial list of ~50 >3.5sigma peaks, a rigorous analysis confirms 16 sources with flux densities S(1.3) > 120 microJy. All of these have secure galaxy counterparts with robust redshifts (<z> = 2.15), and 12 are also detected at 6GHz in new deep JVLA imaging. Due…
We investigate the potential use of nebular emission lines in the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) for determining spectroscopic redshift of z>8 galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). After making a line emissivity model as a function of metallicity, especially for the [O III] 88 micron line which is likely to be the strongest FIR line from H II regions, we predict the line fluxes from high-z galaxies based on a cosmological hydrodynamics simulation of galaxy formation. Since the metallicity of galaxies reaches at ~0.2 Zsun even at z>8 in our simulation, we expect…
We present the discovery of two galaxy overdensities in the Hubble Space Telescope UDF: a proto-cluster, HUDFJ0332.4-2746.6 at $z = 1.84 \pm 0.01$, and a group, HUDFJ0332.5-2747.3 at $z =1.90 \pm 0.01$. Assuming viralization, the velocity dispersion of HUDFJ0332.4-2746.6 implies a mass of $M_{200}= (2.2 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{14} M_{\odot}$, consistent with the lack of extended X-ray emission. Neither overdensity shows evidence of a red sequence. About $50\%$ of their members show interactions and/or disturbed morphologies, which are signatures of merger remnants or disk instability. Most of thei…
We introduce an ALMA band 3 spectroscopic survey, targeting the brightest submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS field. Here we present the first results based on the 18 primary SMGs that have 870 $μ$m flux densities of $S_{870}=12.4-19.3$ mJy and are drawn from a parent sample of 260 ALMA-detected SMGs from the AS2COSMOS survey. We detect emission lines in 17 and determine their redshifts to be in the range of $z=2-5$ with a median of ${3.3\pm0.3}$. We confirm that SMGs with brighter $S_{870}$ are located at higher redshifts. The data additionally cover five fainter companion SMGs, and w…
We present a characterization of the physical properties of a sample of 35 securely-detected, dusty galaxies in the deep ALMA 1.2-mm image obtained as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the {\it Hubble} Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Large Program. This sample is complemented by 26 additional sources identified via an optical/infrared source positional prior. Using their well-characterized spectral energy distributions, we derive median stellar masses and star formation rates (SFR) of $4.8\times10^{10}~M_\odot$ and 30 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and interquartile ranges of $(2.4-11.7)\times10^{10}~M…
We present spectroscopic redshifts of S(870)>2mJy submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) which have been identified from the ALMA follow-up observations of 870um detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (the ALMA-LESS survey). We derive spectroscopic redshifts for 52 SMGs, with a median of z=2.4+/-0.1. However, the distribution features a high redshift tail, with ~25% of the SMGs at z>3. Spectral diagnostics suggest that the SMGs are young starbursts, and the velocity offsets between the nebular emission and UV ISM absorption lines suggest that many are driving winds, with velocity off…
The advent of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has enabled a new era for studies of the formation and assembly of distant galaxies. Cosmological deep field surveys with ALMA and other interferometers have flourished in the last few years covering wide ranges of galaxy properties and redshift, and allowing us to gain critical insights into the physical mechanisms behind the galaxy growth. Here, we present a brief review of recent studies that aim to characterize the interstellar medium properties of galaxies at high redshift ($z>1$), focusing on blank-field ALMA surveys o…
The galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at high-z provides key information on star-formation history and mass assembly in the young Universe. We aimed to use the unique combination of deep optical/NIR/MIR imaging provided by HST, Spitzer and the VLT in the CANDELS-UDS, GOODS-South, and HUDF fields to determine the GSMF over the redshift range 3.5<z<7.5. We utilised the HST WFC3/IR NIR imaging from CANDELS and HUDF09, reaching H~27-28.5 over a total area of 369 arcmin2, in combination with associated deep HST ACS optical data, deep Spitzer IRAC imaging from the SEDS programme, and deep Y and K-…
At z>1, the distinction between merging and 'normal' star-forming galaxies based on single band morphology is often hampered by the presence of large clumps which result in a disturbed, merger-like appearance even in rotationally supported disks. In this paper we discuss how a classification based on canonical, non-parametric structural indices measured on resolved stellar mass maps, rather than on single-band images, reduces the misclassification of clumpy but not merging galaxies. We calibrate the mass-based selection of mergers using the MIRAGE hydrodynamical numerical simulations of isolat…
We have conducted a two-layered spectroscopic survey (1'x1' ultra deep and 3'x3' deep regions) in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). The combination of a large field of view, high sensitivity, and wide wavelength coverage provides an order of magnitude improvement in spectroscopically confirmed redshifts in the HUDF; i.e., 1206 secure spectroscopic redshifts for HST continuum selected objects, which corresponds to 15% of the total (7904). The redshift distribution extends well beyond z>3 and to HST/F775W magnitudes as faint as ~30 mag (AB, 1-s…
We present rest-optical spectroscopic properties of a sample of four galaxies in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ALMA HUDF). These galaxies span the redshift range $1.41 \leq z \leq 2.54$ and the stellar mass range $10.36\leq\log(M_*/{\rm M}_{\odot})\leq10.91$. They have existing far-infrared and radio measurements of dust-continuum and molecular gas emission from which bolometric star-formation rates (SFRs), dust masses, and molecular gas masses have been estimated. We use new $H$- and $K$-band near-infrared spectra from the Keck/MOSFIRE spectrograph …
We present the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) Survey, a deep slitless spectroscopic and imaging Cycle 1 JWST treasury survey designed to constrain feedback mechanisms in low-mass galaxies across cosmic time. NGDEEP targets the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) with NIRISS slitless spectroscopy (f~1.2e-18 erg/s/cm^2, 5sigma) to measure metallicities and star-formation rates (SFRs) for low-mass galaxies through the peak of the cosmic SFR density (0.5<z<4). In parallel, NGDEEP targets the HUDF-Par2 parallel field with NIRCam (m=30.6-30.9, 5sigma) to discover galaxies …
We present deep ALMA CO(5-4) observations of a main sequence, clumpy galaxy at z=1.5 in the HUDF. Thanks to the ~0.5" resolution of the ALMA data, we can link stellar population properties to the CO(5-4) emission on scales of a few kpc. We detect strong CO(5-4) emission from the nuclear region of the galaxy, consistent with the observed $L_{\rm IR}$-$L^{\prime}_{\rm CO(5-4)}$ correlation and indicating on-going nuclear star formation. The CO(5-4) gas component appears more concentrated than other star formation tracers or the dust distribution in this galaxy. We discuss possible implications o…
The catalog section of the Cologne Database for Molecular Spectroscopy, CDMS, contains mostly rotational transition frequencies, with auxiliary information, of molecules observable in space. The frequency lists are generated mostly from critically evaluated laboratory data employing established Hamiltonian models. The CDMS has been online publicly for more than 12 years, e.g., via the short-cut http://www.cdms.de. Initially constructed as ascii tables, its inclusion into a database environment within the Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC, http://www.vamdc.eu) has begun in June 20…

An ALMA Spectroscopic Survey of the Brightest Submillimeter Galaxies in the SCUBA-2-COSMOS Field (AS2COSPEC): Physical Properties of z=2-5 Ultra- and Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present the results of ALMA spectroscopic follow-up of a $z=6.765$ Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxy behind the cluster RXJ1347-1145. We report the detection of [CII]158$μ$m line fully consistent with the Lyman-$α$ redshift and with the peak of the optical emission. Given the magnification of $μ=5.0 \pm 0.3$ the intrinsic (corrected for lensing) luminosity of the [CII] line is $L_{[CII]} =1.4^{+0.2}_{-0.3} \times 10^7L_{\odot}$, which is ${\sim}5$ times fainter than other detections of $z\sim 7$ galaxies. The result indicates that low $L_{[CII]}$ in $z\sim 7$ galaxies compared to the local counterp…
We have performed a spectral line survey called EMoCA toward Sagittarius B2(N) between 84 and 114 GHz with ALMA. Line intensities of the main isotopic species of ethyl cyanide and its singly 13C-substituted isotopomers observed toward the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N2) suggest that the doubly 13C-substituted isotopomers should be detectable also. We want to determine the spectroscopic parameters of all three doubly 13C-substituted isotopologues of ethyl cyanide to search for them in our ALMA data. We investigated the laboratory rotational spectra of the three species between 150 and 990 GHz. We…
Hydrides represent the first steps of interstellar chemistry. Sulfanylium (SH$^+$), in particular, is a key tracer of energetic processes. We used ALMA and the IRAM 30 m telescope to search for the lowest frequency rotational lines of SH$^+$ toward the Orion Bar, the prototypical photo-dissociation region illuminated by a strong UV radiation field. On the basis of previous $Herschel$/HIFI observations of SH$^+$, we expected to detect emission of the two SH$^+$ hyperfine structure (HFS) components of the $N_J = 1_0 - 0_1$ fine structure (FS) component near 346 GHz. While we did not observe any …
Using the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), we report six detections of CO(J=1-0) emission and one upper limit in z=2-3 galaxies originally detected in higher-J CO emission in the Atacama Large submillimeter/Millimeter Array (ALMA) Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). From the CO(J=1-0) line strengths, we measure total cold molecular gas masses of M_gas = 2.4-11.6 x 10^10 (alpha_CO/3.6) Msun. We also measure a median CO(J=3-2) to CO(J=1-0) line brightness temperature ratio of r_31 = 0.84 +/- 0.26, and a CO(J=7-6) to CO(J=1-0) ratio range of r_71 <0.05 to 0.1…
We present results from a deep 2'x3' (comoving scale of 3.7 Mpc x 5.5 Mpc at z=3) survey at 1.1 mm taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the SSA22 field. We observe the core region of a z = 3.09 protocluster, achieving a typical rms sensitivity of 60 micro-Jy/beam at a spatial resolution of 0".7. We detect 18 robust ALMA sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 5. Comparison between the ALMA map and a 1.1 mm map taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) indicates that three submillimeter sources discovered by the AzTE…
We present the rationale for and the observational description of ASPECS: The ALMA SPECtroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF), the cosmological deep field that has the deepest multi-wavelength data available. Our overarching goal is to obtain an unbiased census of molecular gas and dust continuum emission in high-redshift (z$>$0.5) galaxies. The $\sim$1$'$ region covered within the UDF was chosen to overlap with the deepest available imaging from HST. Our ALMA observations consist of full frequency scans in band 3 (84-115 GHz) and band 6 (212-272 GHz) at approximately uniform li…
In this paper we use ASPECS, the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the {\em Hubble} Ultra Deep Field (UDF) in band 3 and band 6, to place blind constraints on the CO luminosity function and the evolution of the cosmic molecular gas density as a function of redshift up to $z\sim 4.5$. This study is based on galaxies that have been solely selected through their CO emission and not through any other property. In all of the redshift bins the ASPECS measurements reach the predicted `knee' of the CO luminosity function (around $5\times10^{9}$ K km/s pc$^2$). We find clear evidence of an evolution in the …
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS$^{3}$), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [CII], [OI], [NII], and [OIII] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7m-array maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ with coverage overlapping four of the five HS$^{3}$ regions. We detect [CII] and [OI] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photo…
We study the molecular gas properties of high-$z$ galaxies observed in the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey (ASPECS) that targets a $\sim1$ arcmin$^2$ region in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF), a blind survey of CO emission (tracing molecular gas) in the 3mm and 1mm bands. Of a total of 1302 galaxies in the field, 56 have spectroscopic redshifts and correspondingly well-defined physical properties. Among these, 11 have infrared luminosities $L_{\rm{}IR}>10^{11}$ L$_\odot$, i.e. a detection in CO emission was expected. Out these, 7 are detected at various significance in CO, and 4 are undetected in …
We analyze the interstellar medium properties of a sample of sixteen bright CO line emitting galaxies identified in the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) Large Program. This CO$-$selected galaxy sample is complemented by a couple of additional CO line emitters in the UDF that are identified based on their MUSE optical spectroscopic redshifts. The ASPECS CO$-$selected galaxies cover a larger range of star-formation rates and stellar masses compared to literature CO emitting galaxies at $z>1$ for which scaling relations have been established previously. Most of AS…

We make use of sensitive (9.3 microJy/beam RMS) 1.2mm-continuum observations from the ASPECS ALMA large program of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) to probe dust-enshrouded star formation from 1362 Lyman-break galaxies spanning the redshift range z=1.5-10 (to ~7-28 Msolar/yr at 4 sigma over the entire range). We find that the fraction of ALMA-detected galaxies in our z=1.5-10 samples increases steeply with stellar mass, with the detection fraction rising from 0% at 10^9 Msolar to 85(-18)(+9)% at >10^{10} Msolar. Moreover, stacking all 1253 low-mass (<10^{9.25} Msolar) galaxies over the ASPEC…
We present an analysis of a deep (1$σ$=13 $μ$Jy) cosmological 1.2-mm continuum map based on ASPECS, the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. In the 1 arcmin$^2$ covered by ASPECS we detect nine sources at $>3.5σ$ significance at 1.2-mm. Our ALMA--selected sample has a median redshift of $z=1.6\pm0.4$, with only one galaxy detected at z$>$2 within the survey area. This value is significantly lower than that found in millimeter samples selected at a higher flux density cut-off and similar frequencies. Most galaxies have specific star formation rates similar to that of main s…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has discovered a surprising abundance of bright galaxy candidates in the very early Universe ($< 500$ Myrs after the Big Bang), calling into question current galaxy formation models. Spectroscopy is needed to confirm the primeval nature of these candidates, as well as to understand how the first galaxies form stars and grow. Here we present deep spectroscopic and continuum ALMA observations towards GHZ2/GLASS-z12, one of the brightest and most robust candidates at $z > 10$ identified in the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. We detect a $5.8 σ$ line…
We performed a spectral line survey called Exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA (EMoCA) toward Sagittarius~B2(N) between 84.1 and 114.4 GHz with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in its Cycles 0 and 1. We determined line intensities of n-propyl cyanide in the ground vibrational states of its gauche and anti conformers toward the hot molecular core Sagittarius B2(N2) which suggest that we should also be able to detect transitions pertaining to excited vibrational states. We wanted to determine spectroscopic parameters of low-lying vibrational states of both conformers …
We present a long-term, multi-wavelength project to understand the epoch of fastest growth of the most massive black holes by using a sample of 40 luminous quasars at z~4.8. These quasars have rather uniform properties, with typical accretion rates and black hole masses of L/L_Edd~0.7 and M_BH~10^9 M_sol. The sample consists of "FIR-bright" sources with a previous Herschel/SPIRE detection, suggesting SFR > 1000 M_sol/yr, as well as of "FIR-faint" sources for which Herschel stacking analysis implies a typical SFR of ~400 M_sol/yr. Six of the quasars have been observed by ALMA in [CII]λ157.74 mi…
We present direct estimates of the mean sky brightness temperature in observing bands around 99GHz and 242GHz due to line emission from distant galaxies. These values are calculated from the summed line emission observed in a blind, deep survey for specrtal line emission from high redshift galaxies using ALMA (the 'ASPECS' survey). In the 99 GHz band, the mean brightness will be dominated by rotational transitions of CO from intermediate and high redshift galaxies. In the 242GHz band, the emission could be a combination of higher order CO lines, and possibly [CII] 158$μ$m line emission from ve…
We present a search for [CII] line and dust continuum emission from optical dropout galaxies at $z>6$ using ASPECS, our ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF). Our observations, which cover the frequency range $212-272$ GHz, encompass approximately the range $6<z<8$ for [CII] line emission and reach a limiting luminosity of L$_{\rm [CII]}\sim$(1.6-2.5)$\times$10$^{8}$ L$_{\odot}$. We identify fourteen [CII] line emitting candidates in this redshift range with significances $>$4.5 $σ$, two of which correspond to blind detections with no optical counterparts. At this sign…
An ALMA survey of submillimetre galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South: an unbiased study of SMG environments measured with narrowband imaging
We present the results of a new study of the relationship between infrared excess (IRX), UV spectral slope (beta) and stellar mass at redshifts 2<z<3, based on a deep Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3-mm continuum mosaic of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Excluding the most heavily-obscured sources, we use a stacking analysis to show that z~2.5 star-forming galaxies in the mass range 9.25 <= log(M/Msun) <= 10.75 are fully consistent with the IRX-beta relation expected for a relatively grey attenuation curve, similar to the commonly adopted Calzetti law. Based on a large, mass compl…
The gas cycling in the circumgalactic regions of galaxies is known to be multi-phase. The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey gathers a large multi-wavelength observational sample of absorption and emission data with the goal to significantly advance our understanding of the physical properties of such CGM gas. A key component of the MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey is the multi-facility observational campaign conducted with VLT/MUSE, ALMA and HST. MUSE-ALMA Haloes targets comprise 19 VLT/MUSE IFS quasar fields, including 32 $z_{\rm abs}<$0.85 strong absorbers with measured N$_{HI}$ $\geq 10^{18}$ cm$^{\rm -2}$ fr…
JWST, ALMA, and Keck Spectroscopic Constraints on the UV Luminosity Functions at z~7-14: Clumpiness and Compactness of the Brightest Galaxies in the Early Universe
The ALMA-ALPINE [CII] survey is aimed at characterizing the properties of a sample of normal star-forming galaxies (SFGs). The ALMA Large Program to INvestigate (ALPINE) features 118 galaxies observed in the [CII]-158$μ$m line and far infrared (FIR) continuum emission during the period of rapid mass assembly, right after the end of the HI reionization, at redshifts of 4<z<6. We present the survey science goals, the observational strategy, and the sample selection of the 118 galaxies observed with ALMA, with an average beam minor axis of about 0.85 arcsec, or $\sim$5 kpc at the median redshift …
We report new deep ALMA observations aimed at investigating the [CII]158um line and continuum emission in three spectroscopically confirmed Lyman Break Galaxies at 6.8<z<7.1, i.e. well within the re-ionization epoch. With Star Formation Rates of SFR ~ 5-15 Msun/yr these systems are much more representative of the high-z galaxy population than other systems targeted in the past by millimeter observations. For the galaxy with the deepest observation we detect [CII] emission at redshift z=7.107, fully consistent with the Lyalpha redshift, but spatially offset by 0.7" (4 kpc) from the optical emis…
We carried out targeted ALMA observations of 129 fields in the COSMOS region at 1.25 mm, detecting 152 galaxies at S/N$\geq$5 with an average continuum RMS of 150 $μ$Jy. These fields represent a S/N-limited sample of AzTEC / ASTE sources with 1.1 mm S/N$\geq$4 over an area of 0.72 square degrees. Given ALMA's fine resolution and the exceptional spectroscopic and multiwavelength photometric data available in COSMOS, this survey allows us unprecedented power in identifying submillimeter galaxy counterparts and determining their redshifts through spectroscopic or photometric means. In addition to…
The [CII]$_{158μm}$ line has long been proposed as a promising line to spectroscopically confirm galaxies in the epoch of reionization. In this paper we present the results of new ALMA observations spectral scanning for [CII] in six particularly luminous Lyman Break Galaxies at $z\sim7$. The six sources were drawn from a sample of bright $z\sim7$ galaxies identified using the wide-area optical, near-IR, and Spitzer/IRAC data over the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field and were targeted on the basis of tight constraints on their redshifts from their IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] colors. We detect significant ($>9σ$) […
We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4σ$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $μ$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magn…
